Step 1: Get Qualified to Become a Les Mills Instructor

Get Qualified to Become a Les Mills Instructor

If you want to become a Les Mills instructor in the UK you will need to undergo training and earn specific qualifications. This section will detail this educational process, covering courses that can help you find employment in this job role:

#1 – Level 2 Fitness Instructor Certification

How do I become a Les Mills instructor Level 2

Before you can begin working for Les Mills you will first need to complete a Level 2 fitness instructor qualification.

This qualification is the minimum requirement to teach fitness classes in the UK, meaning that you can’t get employed in a gym without it. Once enrolled, you will develop a strong foundation of knowledge that will help you become a fitness instructor.

For example, one module will teach you how to motivate groups and individuals during their exercise classes. This will be important for your future success, as you will be able to ensure your class attendees remain engaged and have a positive experience with the Les Mills brand.

The necessity of earning the Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification can be seen in the following job advertisement, in which it is listed as a requirement to teach Les Mills’ BODYCOMBAT classes:

How to Become a Les Mills Instructor

For reference, CIMSPA refers to ‘The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity’, which endorses vocational training providers (including OriGym) to ensure everyone is working to the same standard.

When deciding on a training provider you should always look for CIMSPA’s stamp of approval. This will ensure that you’re being trained to the correct industry standard, and will be regarded as fully qualified when applying for jobs.

Once you’ve obtained a Level 2 certification you will be able to teach fitness classes and move on with learning how to become a group fitness instructor.

#2 – Become a Les Mills Instructor With Branded Training

Les Mills instructor jobs UK logo

For immediate clarity, there is no such thing as a holistic ‘Les Mills instructor’, the job title simply refers to working for the overarching brand.

So, if you’re questioning ‘how do I become a Les Mills instructor?’, you will first need to decide which branded classes you wish to teach. The company itself has a wide range of courses to choose from, encouraging aspiring instructors to ‘teach what you love’

How to become a Les Mills Instructor UK

In order to ensure you choose the right course for you, you’ll need to do your own research into various Les Mills’ training programmes. In doing so, you can determine what classes are best suited for your specific skill set and personal preferences.

Keep in mind that every Les Mills qualification is different, and just because you have one does not mean you are eligible to teach every branded class – e.g. if you’re certified in BODYPUMP, you’ll only be qualified to teach BODYPUMP classes specifically!

This is evident in the following job description for David Lloyd’s Gyms, which lists the specific qualification as a necessary requirement for a BODYPUMP instructor position:

How do I become a Les Mills instructor

With that being said, you aren’t limited to enrolling on just one Les Mills course either. Instead, you can become a Les Mills instructor who is qualified to teach multiple different classes, but you will need to enrol and pay for each course separately.

When Becoming a Les Mills Instructor, How Do These Courses Differ?

When Becoming a Les Mills Instructor How Do These Courses Differ

To understand how these courses vary, here is a brief description of some of the most popular Les Mills training programmes:

  • BODYPUMP – Is described as the original barbell course and is perfect for instructors who prefer full body workouts.
  • BODYCOMBAT – Is a high-energy martial arts inspired class that requires no physical contact.
  • BODYJAM – A dance inspired workout class that focuses on body movement and music.

Naturally, the contents of the training course will vary depending on what Les Mills classes you decide to specialise in – For example, the skills and knowledge you learn on the BODYPUMP course will differ from those acquired through the BODYJAM qualification.

In addition to this, whilst every Les Mills training programme typically lasts 2 days, the overall delivery of the course can also vary depending on your choice. BODYPUMP for instance can be taught in-person, whereas BODYCOMBAT is based entirely online:

Becoming a Les Mills Instructor BODYPUMP

Becoming a Les Mills Instructor BODYCOMBAT

In addition to affecting the content and delivery of the course, your chosen Les Mills training programme may vary in price depending on when you sign up. This is evident from the following screenshot below, which shows how early applicants pay less:

Les Mills become an instructor payment

Keep in mind that all of the aforementioned information refers to the initial Les Mills training process. In order to officially become a Les Mills instructor in the UK you may also have to complete further training.

This is only a requirement on specific courses such as BODYCOMBAT, and will need to be completed 12 months following your initial qualification.

If this is a requirement for your chosen Les Mills qualification, information regarding further training will be discussed during the course itself. You will also be able to find further information on the corresponding ‘More Info’ page:

How do I become a Les Mills instructor details

From all of this information, it should be apparent that each Les Mills qualification has its own process for assessing and qualifying potential instructors.

For example, in order to become a Les Mills instructor teaching BODYPUMP classes, you will need to complete 3 presentations and teach a practice class. During this assessment tutors will be focusing on 3 main components:

  • Choreography
  • Technique
  • Coaching

In addition to this, you will also have to submit a video evaluation within 60 days following the completion of your chosen course.

The assessment process for each Les Mills course can be somewhat complex. For this reason, you should conduct further research into your chosen course to ensure that you’re prepared.

To help with this process, check out this list of curated OriGym articles that hone in on the requirements of individual Les Mills courses:

Each article will offer an in-depth look at the specific Les Mills course, detailing aspects such as what you’ll study and how you will be assessed.

Step 2: Getting Insured Following Les Mills Instructor Training

Getting Insured Following Les Mills Instructor Training

Once you’re officially qualified the next step in becoming a Les Mills instructor is to legally protect yourself with the correct insurance.

For reference, insurance can offer financial protection in the event something goes wrong during your classes, and can even save you from jail time should a client severely injure themselves.

When operating as a Les Mills instructor you’ll want to ensure that you’re covered in the following areas:

  • Public Liability Insurance – This legally protects you in the event one of your class attendees is injured or falls ill while under your supervision. For example, they could claim that a faulty piece of equipment caused their injury.
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance – Somewhat similar to the coverage above, this will legally protect you in the event a client calls your teaching style/advice into question. For example, they could claim an injury they suffered was the direct result of your guidance,
  • Loss of Earnings – In the event that you are personally injured and can’t work for a prolonged period of time, loss of earnings insurance will help to ensure you’re financially compensated for this time.
  • Equipment Insurance – If your personal equipment is damaged, lost, or stolen, you can claim financial compensation in order to buy a replacement.

Les Mills instructor jobs UK Insurance

When learning how to become a Les Mills instructor you can either purchase insurance from the brand itself, or through a third-party provider.

Les Mills insurance is specifically designed for self-employed instructors who teach the popular branded classes. For this reason, this may be the ideal option if you only intend to teach Les Mills classes and nothing else.

For reference, the minimum payment for Les Mills insurance is £51.88 a month, which will provide you with £10,000,000 worth of insurance coverage. This will legally cover you in all of the aforementioned areas, in addition to protecting you from libel and slander accusations.

To get a quote of your own, head over to the Les Mills Insurance website and fill out their application form with your own information:

Les Mills become an instructor Insurance

Alternatively, you could instead opt for a third party provider such as Insure4Sport also provide coverage for a variety of Les Mills classes, including:

In addition to this, it may be worth investing in insurance for fitness instructors. This will be the better option if you intend on teaching classes outside of the Les Mills umbrella.

Note – Purchasing your own insurance isn’t always a necessity, if you’re in any form of contracted employment (part/full-time) then an employer may provide this coverage.

Step 3: Finding Les Mills Instructor Jobs in The UK

Finding Les Mills instructor jobs in the UK

Once you have learned how to become a Les Mills instructor you can then use the companies’ ‘find-a-class’ feature to see which facilities in your local area offer these branded classes.

This will help you determine which locations are more likely to hire you to teach classes. For example, the screenshot below highlights the gyms and fitness centres in Liverpool that offer these services to their customers:

Les Mills instructor jobs UK example

Popular fitness chains across the UK host regular Les Mills classes, meaning that you could find stable employment in sites such as:

  • JD Gyms
  • David Lloyd
  • Total Fitness
  • 24/7 Fitness
  • Village Hotels & Leisure
  • Virgin Active

If you’re questioning ‘how do you become a Les Mills instructor at these facilities?’, the simple answer is to apply as you would for any other job.

For example, employers will regularly use sites such as Indeed or Glassdoor to post Les Mills instructor job ads. The application process for these roles may differ from one vacancy to another, but typically you will be asked to provide a CV and cover letter at a minimum!

An example of one of these job ads can be seen below from Virgin Active:

How do you become a Les Mills instructor at Virgin Active

Be aware that not every employer will specifically hire Les Mills instructors. Instead, they may opt for a general fitness instructor who can teach a variety of classes, including Les Mills.

For example, the following job advertisement is for a holistic gym instructor position, where the employer lists that a successful candidate must be able to teach BODYPUMP among a variety of other classes.

How to become a Les Mills Instructor highlight

As you can see from the highlighted section, the importance of getting a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification is again stressed if you wish to work in this holistic position.

Note, when working as a holistic fitness instructor in these locations you will be expected to fulfil other responsibilities associated with the position, beyond teaching classes. This can include:

  • Hosting gym inductions
  • Working on the gym floor offering help and feedback to customers
  • Cleaning equipment at the end of a shift

Now that you understand how to become a Les Mills instructor, you should always read job descriptions diligently in order to determine whether the vacancy is appropriate for you.

The Average Salary for Les Mills Instructor Jobs in the UK

The Average Salary for Les Mills Instructor Jobs in the UK

One of the largest deciding factors in whether you pursue a role or not, will undoubtedly be the proposed salary!

According to recent stats collected by Glassdoor, if you choose to become a Les Mills instructor in the UK you can expect to earn a lucrative salary of £30,819 per year:

How to become a Les Mills Instructor with a good salary

Whilst this may seem like a highly lucrative salary, keep in mind that this data is not entirely founded. This is due to the fact that the final figure is an average made up of stats submitted specifically by site users – Thus not reflective of the entire industry.

In addition to this, numerous factors could influence the statistics submitted by users. For example, some instructors may be qualified to teach more than 1 Les Mills class, and will thus be able to earn a higher salary.

Other factors which could influence the overall salary of a Les Mills instructor include:

  • Location, i.e. you can expect to earn more when becoming a Les Mills instructor in London compared to smaller towns.
  • The type of employment, i.e. whether you are self-employed or contracted by a gym.
  • Experience level – e.g. those who have just become a Les Mills instructor will earn less than those who have been in the industry for longer periods of time

In short, once you have learned how to become a Les Mills instructor you should treat each job application separately. Be sure to read the proposed salary, before determining whether it’s suitable for your specific needs and skill-set.

Progress Your Career After Becoming a Les Mills Instructor

Now that you know how to become a Les Mills instructor in the UK, keep in mind that you don’t have to stay in this position permanently. Instead, you can look for progression opportunities and expand into different areas including:

#1 – Continue Working With Les Mills After You Become an Instructor

How do you become a Les Mills instructor advance

One option is to continue working with the Les Mills brand in different capacities. This is even encouraged by the organisation and is referred to as ‘ongoing development‘.

By following this process you can pursue higher roles within the company, in positions such as an assessor or presenter – These are just two examples, all other vacancies can be found within the website’s career section.

Become a Les Mills Presenter

Become a Les Mills Instructor and Presenter

Once you have learned how to become a Les Mills instructor, you can then advance your career and become a presenter for the brand.

For reference, a presenter’s main responsibility is to teach instructors new routines every quarter. Due to the popularity of this position, Les Mills does not hire for this role frequently, meaning you should apply as and when you see a vacancy.

The process of doing so can be found below, as advised by the brand’s recruitment section!

  • Step 1: Instructors must submit a grade review to ensure they’re qualified for the position. To ensure this information is as accurate as possible, be sure to keep your Les Mills profile updated!
  • Step 2: Submit a video speaking directly to the camera about why you’re passionate about the company and why you wish to become a presenter. You will also be asked to complete a video assessment, but this process will vary from one applicant to another.

Become a Les Mills Instructor UK

  • Step 3: You will then be invited to an audition day. Here you can meet other qualified Les Mills instructors, attend upskill workshops, and listen to insightful presentations.
  • Step 4: Successful applications will be invited back for a second day, which will work as a bootcamp event.

If successful, Les Mills contact you further about your future role within the company! Be aware that whilst you may apply for a presenter role, the organisation may feel that you’re better suited for other positions, such as an instructor.

Becoming a Les Mills Assessor:

Les Mills become an instructor and exam

Those who are researching ‘how do you become a Les Mills instructor?’ will undoubtedly have a passion for fitness and helping others achieve their goals. You can use this same dedication to pursue a career as a Les Mills assessor.

In this role you will be responsible for evaluating and marking the assessments of aspiring instructors on the training course. This provides a great opportunity to shape the future leaders of the brand, passing along any knowledge and experience you have gained.

The application process is the same as that of a presenter, with the key difference being that in your video submission you will stress your desire to become an assessor.

Become a Les Mills Instructor UK

Qualified assessor Cris Tourinho shed some light on key traits Les Mills looks for when hiring for this position –

  • What programmes are needed for the business – e.g. what Les Mills training qualifications you hold
  • The commitment shown by the instructor to the Les Mills brand
  • Living the Les Mills values
  • Using the teachings acquired in advanced training

Earning a Fitness Teaching and Assessing qualification could also increase the chances of becoming employed in this role. You can mention this certification during your video submission or audition, in order to demonstrate that you have valuable prior experience as an assessor.

Note: Due to the fact that these roles are filled internally, little information is made available about the salary associated with these positions. However, one thing can be guaranteed, is that they’ll earn more than instructors as they are higher up in the company.

#2 – Teach Other Fitness Classes After Becoming a Les Mills Instructor

Continue Working With Les Mills After You Become an Instructor

If you enjoy teaching group fitness classes and wish to expand beyond your Les Mills bubble, you could look for job opportunities as a general fitness instructor.

You won’t even have to obtain any additional qualifications either, as most employers will ask applicants to hold a Level 2 fitness instructor qualification –  which you should already have!

The best part about becoming a fitness instructor is that you don’t have to give up teaching Les Mills classes. For example, you could teach Les Mills classes at one location, and general fitness classes at another, potentially doubling your income as a freelancer.

Alternatively, if you wish to stay in one location you could look for opportunities that allow you to teach both classes. In the example below for instance, Les Mills sessions are listed among several holistic classes such as aerobics and indoor cycling.

Teach Other Fitness Classes After Becoming a Les Mills Instructor

The average salary of a fitness instructor is estimated to be around £26,325 every year, according to stats collected by Indeed.

Become a Les Mills instructor UK Salary Indeed

Whilst this is technically less than that of a Les Mills instructor, if you worked both positions on a freelance basis you have the opportunity to earn a significantly higher salary. This is because you aren’t restricting yourself to one mode of employment, and will instead be working in a variety of different positions.

#3 – Qualify as a Personal Trainer After You’ve Become a Les Mills Instructor

Become a Les Mills Instructor With a PT Certificate

By becoming a personal trainer you will be able to work with clients on a one-to-one basis, alongside teaching your Les Mills classes.

You could even plug your PT services at the end of your weekly classes. This will help you attract a dedicated base of clients, who are already invested in your approach to training.

In order to qualify for this position you will first need to obtain a Level 3 personal training qualification.Throughout this course you will learn valuable skills, such as how to plan and deliver bespoke workout programmes to  individual clients.

Once qualified you can work as a PT in a variety of ways, for example, you could start your own business or seek employment in a gym or fitness centre. The latter of which can be seen below in an example from Nuffield Health:

How to become a Les Mills Instructor PT

As evident from this example, you can expect to earn a decent wage when working in this role. But be aware that your overall salary as a personal trainer can vary depending on a range of factors, such as:

  • How often you work
  • The number of clients you have
  • Your location – On average trainers located in like London earn more than others across the country
  • The services you offer – if you have a specialism you will be able to charge even more due to being an expert

With that being said, you can expect to earn a higher salary when working as a PT. This is supported by Glassdoor, which states that on averager trainers can earn up to £86k every year!

Les Mills instructor jobs UK salary for pT

Ultimately, the earning potential for personal trainers is far greater than that of Les Mills instructors. This is especially true if you decide to operate your own business, as you will have direct control over how much you charge!

#4 – Become a Yoga Instructor Following Les Mills Training

Become a Les Mills Instructor and Yoga

Alternatively, if you want to specialise in another group exercise class you could pursue a Level 3 yoga instructor qualification. Throughout the duration of this course you will learn how to plan and deliver yoga classes for students with varied skill sets and needs.

Once obtained, you will be able to teach these classes in addition to your regular Les Mills sessions. For example, if you’re employed on a contracted basis you could inform your employer of this additional qualification and begin teaching these classes.

Alternatively, those that work freelance could look for yoga instructor jobs that can be held alongside their Les Mills responsibilities. For example, this Virgin Active advertisement is for a zero hour contract position

Become a Yoga Instructor Following Les Mills Training

Pursuing a role can also prove to be financially rewarding, with Talent estimating that yoga instructors can earn anywhere between £34k-£66k every year:

Yoga instrcutor salary Become a Les Mills Instructor

Whilst these stats can be influenced by a variety of factors, the final results show that even inexperienced instructors can earn a decent salary teaching yoga.

If you wish to progress your career for financial purposes, you should therefore consider obtaining a Level 3 yoga qualification.

#5 – Progress Onto Becoming a Gym Manager Alongside Your Les Mills Instructor Jobs

How to become a Les Mills instructor UK GYM

After learning how to become a Les Mills instructor, you will naturally spend a lot of your time working in gyms and fitness centres. With this in mind, one natural route of progression is to pursue a career as a gym manager.

In this role you will be responsible for the daily maintenance and upkeep of the gym, overseeing both employees and customers alike. This can include leading classes, so you won’t have to give up your Les Mills sessions, instead you’ll just take on more responsibilities.

Typically, employers will prefer to hire candidates who have prior experience working in gyms. This can be seen below, where the job advertisement clearly states candidates must have prior experience working in a gym environment:

Become a Les Mills Instructor and Gym manager

In order to initially find employment at a gym you will naturally need to hold both a Level 2 fitness instructor and Level 3 personal training qualification – which is also listed among the requirements for this job role.

As a boutique fitness brand that has revolutionised group exercise classes, one of the most common questions about Barry’s is ‘how much do Barry’s instructors make?’

Whether you’re an aspiring Barry’s instructor looking for information on earnings, or are curious how you can earn more, we‘ll answer this question for you.

What Is The Average Barry’s Instructor Salary?

When it comes to answering the question ‘how much does a Barry’s instructor make?’, there is unfortunately no conclusive answer.

This is because Barry’s does not advertise its salaries publicly.

Although Glassdoor doesn’t have the figures for a Barry’s Bootcamp salary in the UK, the site suggests that a front-of-house team member earns between £22,309 and £23,847 per year.

barrys instructor salary

According to Salary.com, the average Barry instructor salary is $57,933 in the US, which is equivalent to £47,742.59

However, this figure can range from £34,558.63 to £60,926.54, depending on several factors.

For example, no figure is given in job advertisements for Barry’s instructors because it is a self-employed role, so their salary will depend on how many classes each instructor runs.

barrys instructor salary 2

We can see from the Barry’s class timetable above that Joe Davies instructs the most classes. He is therefore likely to have a higher salary than an instructor like Olivia Mercer, who teaches only one class.

The average Barry’s trainer salary also depends on other roles that their instructors may take on.

For example, as shown in the class timetable, there are a variety of different instructors at Barry’s in Liverpool. This means that each instructor can only run a limited number of classes per day, and will therefore have spare time to take on other employment opportunities.

This is the case for Barry’s instructor Matt Spooner, who is also an instructor at Ride Republic.

barrys instructor salary 4

In terms of ‘how much do Barry’s instructors make?’, instructors like Matt will therefore have a higher salary than those who only run Barry’s classes.

What Is A Typical Barry’s Bootcamp Instructor Salary Per Class?

barrys instructor salary 8

As well as the average salary per year, you may also be wondering ‘how much do Barry’s instructors make per class?’

With each class lasting from 45 minutes to an hour, the average hourly wage for a Barry’s instructor is $28 according to salary.com, which is the equivalent of £23.02 in the UK.

However, this can range from £16.44 to £29.60, depending on factors which we’ll discuss later in this article.

What Is The Average Salary Of A Fitness Class Instructor Compared To A Barry’s Trainer Salary?

barrys trainer salary

If you’re already a fitness instructor or wanting to get into the industry, you may be wondering how a Barry’s instructor salary compares to that of a standard fitness instructor.

According to Indeed, the average salary of a fitness class instructor is currently £13.77 per hour or £25,827 per year.

The figure will vary depending on factors such as location, with the average salary for a fitness instructor in London being £16.03 per hour. This is 18% higher than the national average salary.

However, estimates for the average fitness instructor salary from sites such as Indeed are typically not completely reflective of the reality.

barrys trainer salary 3

This is because they only have data from fitness instructors who are employed on a full-time basis by gyms and health clubs.

They therefore do not consider the salaries of freelance or self-employed instructors, who typically earn more than those in employment.

Freelance instructors have a higher earning potential, as they can run as many classes as they wish, and are not limited to just one venue.

This means that whilst fitness class instructors who are employed by one gym are limited by the number of classes on the gym’s class timetable, freelance instructors are not. Their earnings are therefore unlimited.

For example, this job advertisement for a freelance group class instructor shows that instructors running classes at Anytime Fitness can expect to earn from £20 to £25 per hour, or per class.

barrys instructor salary 5

The number of classes that they choose to teach here and for other gyms will therefore determine their average salary.

Why Is The Average Barry’s Instructor Salary Different from that Of Other Fitness Class Instructors?

barrys trainer salary 2

To provide some context for this question, here are the average salaries for three different fitness class instructor careers:

  • Barry’s instructor – £47,742.59
  • Fitness class instructor at a gym – £25,827
  • Self-employed fitness class instructor – £20 – £25 per hour

When it comes to the question ‘how much do Barry’s bootcamp instructors make?’, it’s important to consider that Barry’s instructors have many of the same roles and responsibilities as a fitness class instructor, as you can see from the job description below:

barrys instructor salary 6

For example, we can see from this job advert on Barry’s website that they ask for candidates to be qualified as a Level 2 Fitness Instructor at minimum. This is a requirement for all fitness class instructors, no matter where they work.

Barry’s instructors are also required to be friendly, positive, and have a passion for helping clients reach their goals- all of which are key roles of any fitness class instructor.

However, the difference between the two roles, and the reason that Barry’s Bootcamp instructor pay in the UK is higher, is that most general fitness class instructors tend to work at:

  • Commercial gyms, such as Pure Gym or JD Gyms
  • Small independent gyms
  • Local council-run leisure centres

In contrast, Barry’s instructors work for a high-end fitness brand whose classes are trademarked.

The boutique fitness brand offers world-famous workouts that are even popular with celebrities such as David Beckham and Naomi Campbell.

It costs £20 to take part in a Barry’s workout, which is a much higher price point than a general fitness class at a high-street gym. In fact, the price of these classes is often included in the price of a monthly membership.

This means that instructors need to act as an “Ambassador”, upholding the reputation of the luxury brand that they are representing, as shown by the ‘key responsibilities’ section of a Barry’s job advert.

barrys instructor salary 7

For their efforts of maintaining Barry’s values and providing the best experience possible for their clients, Barry’s instructors are therefore rewarded with a higher salary than general fitness instructors.

This is highlighted by this review of the company culture at a Barry’s studio, where all employees go above and beyond to uphold the highest of standards.

barrys trainer salary 4

Plus, since they are a boutique fitness brand, Barry’s studios are based in big city centre locations such as London in the UK.

Central locations such as London have a much higher demand for luxury fitness classes like Barry’s and it is unlikely that this demand would be so high if they were located in more suburban areas.

The average salary in London and inner cities where Barry’s classes are based is higher than in other areas of the UK as the cost of living is higher.

For instance, according to Statista, the average salary for someone working in London in 2022 was £41,866, whereas in the North East it was only £29,521.

This highlights why there is such a difference between a Barry’s Bootcamp salary in the UK and the salary of someone who has become a group fitness class instructor!

You will also need to have completed a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Course to purchase insurance that will cover you to run fitness classes, which we’ll discuss later in this article.

Consider Getting A Personal Trainer Qualification To Become A PILOXING Instructor

Consider PT Qualification To Become A PILOXING Instructor

As well as gaining a Level 2 qualification, you may also want to become a personal trainer.

Although this is not compulsory for becoming a PILOXING instructor, gaining a Level 3 qualification can be hugely beneficial in terms of your career prospects.

This is because gyms looking for new employees often prefer applicants who can train their clients one-on-one, whereas fitness instructors aren’t qualified to offer this additional service.

For example, the group fitness instructor role below specifies those with a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification are preferred:

Group Fitness Instructor Ad For Piloxing Instructor

Gaining a Level 3 qualification will also give you the opportunity to advance your career once you’ve become a PILOXING instructor.

For instance, you could consider teaching one-to-one PILOXING sessions alongside your classes, which would allow you to add an additional revenue stream to your role.

If you’re not already a qualified fitness instructor, you can take a Personal Trainer Diploma to gain both Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications at once.

Step 2: Get A PILOXING Certification

Becoming A PILOXING Instructor Involves Getting Certified

Once you’ve gained the essential foundation qualifications to work in a gym, you’ll next need to complete a specific PILOXING course.

There are two types of instructor training courses taught by PILOXING’s master trainers worldwide. You can either attend a live virtual online training session, or an in-person 3 to 9-hour workshop at a facility near you.

PILOXING also offers an on-demand training service, allowing you to complete the workshop in your own time from the comfort of your own home.

From those focused on the gentle Pilates side of PILOXING, to more fast-paced cardio classes, there’s a range of different PILOXING programmes for you to choose from.

Piloxing class instructor

These include:

  • PILOXING SSP, the original PILOXING workout
  • PILOXING Barre
  • PILOXING Knockout
  • The Mix by PILOXING
  • PILOXING Booty & Booty+
  • Pilates Flow by PILOXING

Each programme has a different training workshop to ensure instructors are experts in their chosen programme.

This means that, when booking your instructor training online, it’s important you choose the correct workshop for the programme you’re most interested in.

Although there is a unique workshop for each programme, all instructors will learn about the PILOXING brand.

As PILOXING is a registered trademark, this is particularly important. It means you must gain their specific qualification to ensure you can uphold the brand’s standards while teaching classes.

It also ensures clients will get the same PILOXING experience with all instructors, wherever in the world they attend a class.

Becoming a piloxing instructor

Once completed, you will receive a one-year licence to teach your PILOXING programme, as well as a set of weighted PILOXING gloves for the SSP, Barre, and Knockout programmes.

If you choose the Booty or Booty+ programme, you’ll receive 2 Power Bands with a Grip Pad.

You’ll also be given the necessary PILOXING music, training choreography, and a how-to manual to get you started, as well as a certificate declaring your qualified status.

As part of the PILOXING continued education programme, you will then need to sign up for the PILOXING Instructor Association (PIA). This has several benefits, including:

  • Additional full classes and choreography
  • Access to the PowerMusic1 music app
  • Frequent PILOXING album releases straight to your phone
  • The option to organise charity events and block parties
  • Discounts on PILOXING-sponsored events and workshops
  • Wholesale pricing on accessories for you to sell to class members
  • In-house continuing education, such as podcasts, business tools, and research on the fitness industry
  • Help to develop your fitness class business

Step 3: Get Insured When Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

Get Insured After Becoming A Piloxing Instructor

As we previously mentioned, it’s essential you gain the correct qualifications to become a PILOXING instructor to ensure you can get insured.

This is evident if we take a look at the policy wording for fitness instructor insurance from Insure4Sport, which suggests their policy only covers those who have the relevant qualification for their sport or activity.

Piloxing Instructor Insure4Sport

Getting insurance for your classes is vital in case things go wrong during a session.

For instance, a class member may become injured during your classes, which gives them the right to bring a compensation claim against you, even if the accident wasn’t your fault.

A good insurance policy will cover you for any legal costs you may incur. The main types of insurance required to run PILOXING classes are:

  • Public LiabilityThis is the main type of insurance offered by most sports insurance policies. It provides cover in case of injury to a class member or if fitness centre property becomes damaged while you’re teaching classes.
  • Personal Accident Insurance – As a PILOXING instructor leading several classes a week, you’re also at risk of injury. From broken bones to permanent disablement, Personal Accident insurance protects you financially in case you get injured on the job.
  • Loss of Earnings – Whether you’re a self-employed PILOXING instructor or are working in a gym that may not cover sick pay, Loss of Earnings is an important type of insurance to have. If an injury you’ve sustained leaves you unable to teach, this type of insurance provides financial support if you’re out of work for more than 14 days.
  • Equipment Protection Necessary in case you’re PILOXING equipment becomes damaged, lost, or stolen and will cover the cost of replacing it.

When choosing your insurance policy, be sure to check the level of coverage it offers. For example, Insure4Sport provides cover for up to £50,000 worth of equipment, whereas other policies may cover less.

Ultimately, getting the right policy comes down to thorough research and understanding what you need!

Step 4: Find A Job Role To Become A PILOXING Instructor

Find a Job Role to Become a PILOXING Instructor

After getting certified and purchasing the right insurance, the next step is to find your job role if you’re wondering how to become a PILOXING instructor.

We’d suggest starting by searching for PILOXING instructor job roles on online job boards such as Indeed or Glassdoor.

Most employers are likely to be looking for fitness instructors who are available to teach a variety of popular group exercise classes, such as the role below:

Group exercise classes ad piloxing instructor skills

Many commercial gyms do not yet offer PILOXING classes as part of their class timetable, and so both of these factors mean you may not find a specific PILOXING instructor role.

This means one of the best ways of finding your role is by looking for local gyms, fitness centres, and venues that host PILOXING classes who may be looking for an instructor.

To find venues near you, use the Find a Class search tool on the PILOXING website:

Become a piloxing instructor by finding classes

This allows you to specify:

  • Your location
  • Class type – In-person, hybrid, or virtual
  • Class day
  • The programme you’re qualified to instruct

You could then approach companies such as UpFit who run PILOXING and other fitness classes in the community, using church and school halls.

Become piloxing instructor with Upfit

If you do find a role as a general fitness instructor for a gym that doesn’t yet offer PILOXING classes, you could refer your gym manager to the PILOXING website where they can enquire about bringing it to their class timetable.

One of the benefits of offering PILOXING classes is it allows your employer to create an additional gym revenue stream, by retailing PILOXING tools and merchandise to members.

Piloxing instructor equipmet

Another option for becoming a PILOXING instructor is to set up your own classes.

There are two different ways you may choose to run your PILOXING classes: in-person or online classes.

#1 – Teach PILOXING Classes In Your Local Community

Teach PILOXING Classes In Your Local Community

The first thing you need to consider when setting up your own in-person PILOXING classes is where you’d like to teach them.

As previously mentioned, PILOXING classes are often delivered in local community spaces, including schools, community centres, and church halls.

Whether you choose to hold weekly classes or would like to run several per week, we’d recommend hiring out one of these spaces on a recurring basis.

#2 – Teach Online Classes If You’re Wondering How to Become a PILOXING Instructor from Home

Become Online Piloxing Instructor

Hosting online classes is a great option for those who would prefer to work from the comfort of their own home.

As well as lowering the overhead expenses you’d usually spend on a space to hold your classes, you’ll also be able to reach a wider audience, as class members won’t be limited to instructors who are local to them.

Our first tip is to choose a space large enough to accommodate the movements of a PILOXING CLASS. It should also have enough room to store your equipment and should be distraction-free.

Speaking of equipment, you will need a laptop or desktop PC that won’t lag when you’re using software such as Zoom or Uscreen to host classes.

Become Piloxing Instructor Online

You will also need a camera with good picture quality so class members can see the exercises you’re demonstrating, as it may negatively impact client retention if the quality is low. The lighting in your space should be even, with no harsh shadows impacting the quality of your image.

Along with picture quality, you should also invest in a microphone to ensure good sound quality. Headsets typically work best for PILOXING instructors as they leave your hands free for instructing and demonstrating exercises.

Teaching Online Piloxing Instructor

For both in-person and online classes, you’ll need to invest in essential exercise equipment for your PILOXING classes. Depending on the programme you specialise in, you’ll need different types of equipment.

For example, the main piece of equipment you’ll need to provide for all classes is a pair of weighted gloves for every participant.

For PILOXING Barre classes, you will need to purchase ballet barres for balance and stability.

Piloxing Instructor Equipment Ballet Barre

When it comes to PILOXING Booty, you’ll need the signature PILOXING Booty (PB) power bands and a unique grip pad.

These pieces of equipment are all available to purchase once you join the PILOXING Instructor Association after becoming qualified.

Finally, and most importantly, you will need to market your PILOXING classes to begin building a loyal client base.

To do this, you may consider creating a fitness website to share all of the key information about your classes.

Become a piloxing instructor with website

You can also create a booking page on your website so visitors can quickly and easily see your timetable and book classes.

This streamlines the booking process and allows them to book whenever is convenient for them, meaning they’re more likely to keep booking sessions with you.

Using booking software such as SimplyBook.me also means you won’t always need to be on hand at the end of the phone or email to accept bookings, making the process much more efficient for you too.

If you’re looking to become a PILOXING instructor with a large client base, you can use your website to display client testimonials, as UpFit does:

UpFit Piloxing Instructor Testimonials

These positive testimonials from happy clients will act as a form of word-of-mouth marketing, helping to show you’re experienced and trustworthy as a PILOXING instructor, as well as someone who can produce results for their clients.

We’d also recommend creating fitness social media pages on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Here, you can advertise yourself as a PILOXING instructor and market your classes.

Listing your PILOXING qualifications in your fitness instructor bio will help show you’re a PILOXING expert for those who may be looking for classes to attend.

You can also use your platforms to connect and engage with class members to ensure they keep coming back to your classes.

Engage with members when becoming a piloxing instructor

Once created, you should link your social media pages with your website so those who may be considering taking PILOXING classes can discover the information they need to book classes.

Alongside online marketing, you should also create printed advertising materials, such as:

  • Business Cards
  • Leaflets
  • Posters

These can be displayed in local community spaces where your target demographic is likely to see them, such as

  • Where you’re running classes from (church hall, community centre, etc.)
  • Local supermarkets
  • GP surgeries
  • Community centres

You can also keep your business cards on hand for whenever you’re out and see a chance to advertise your classes.

An example of a PILOXING instructor who has successfully launched their own classes is Amy Lamont:

Piloxing instructor group classes amy lamont

Amy runs both in-person and live Zoom classes to expand the reach of her services, as well as on-demand PILOXING for those who struggle to attend classes at the set time.

She also uses Instagram and Facebook effectively to promote her classes and engage with class members:

Amy Lamont Piloxing Instructor Instagram

Choosing to run your own PILOXING classes also offers much greater scope for how you price your classes, and the schedule you create for yourself, meaning it can be as lucrative as you want it to be!

Step 5: Progress In Your Career Beyond Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

Once you have built up some experience as a PILOXING instructor, you may be wondering how to progress your career.

Here are four options you should consider to improve your skills and increase your earning potential:

#1 – Expand The Styles Of PILOXING You Teach After Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

Expand The Styles Of PILOXING You Teach After Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

Once you’ve started teaching PILOXING, you may want to become qualified in additional PILOXING programmes.

This will allow you to run more classes, which will make being a PILOXING instructor a much more lucrative fitness career option

You will also be able to teach a wider variety of classes and appeal to a wider target audience.

For example, if you currently run faster-paced programmes such as SSP or knockout, then getting certified to teach Pilates Flow will allow you to reach those who prefer a gentler workout style.

Pilates flow instructor

To do this, you’ll need to take additional PILOXING training workshops and gain qualifications in your chosen programme.

Expanding your skills as a PILOXING instructor is made easier thanks to a 20% discount for any additional programmes you take.

PILOXING also supports the continuing education of their instructors, offering a 65% discount to refresh your skills in a programme you’re already certified in.

#2 – Offer PT Services If You Want To Become A PILOXING Instructor Who Trains Individual Clients

Offer PT Services If You Want To Become A PILOXING Instructor Who Trains Individual Clients

Another way of expanding your career once you’ve become a PILOXING instructor is to work one-to-one with clients as a personal trainer.

This means you will need to gain a Level 3 Personal Training qualification if you haven’t already.

Personal training is a lucrative service to add to your PILOXING repertoire. You’ll not only be able to teach classes, but will also be qualified to design and deliver tailored training programmes to suit individual client needs.

Become a piloxing instructor and PT

This will appeal to those who are looking for expert help to meet their fitness goals through PILOXING, whether they’re looking to lose weight, build muscle, or simply enjoy exercise.

As you’re offering a more bespoke service, you’ll also be able to charge a higher price point for your personal training sessions than your group classes.

For example, Amy Lamont’s group classes cost £10 per person, or £8 for a Zoom class:

Amy Lamont Piloxing Instructor Prices

In contrast, personal trainers can charge anywhere from £25 to £65 per session, depending on factors such as:

  • Location – PTs based in London will charge more than those in Liverpool.
  • Level of experience as a personal trainer
  • The specialist skills a PT has
  • Level of demand for their sessions

If you’re looking for a job role in a gym, having a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification will also make your CV more appealing to employers, as this signals you have a higher level of skills and knowledge to offer.

Also, many employers are now advertising joint personal trainer and fitness instructor roles, as demonstrated below.

Become a piloxing instructor offering PT services

Having both qualifications will increase the likelihood of you finding a role as a PILOXING instructor.

Personal trainers also earn a higher salary on average than fitness instructors, simply because they have more knowledge and can offer more services.

According to Indeed, the average salary for a personal trainer in the UK is £28,000. However, you can expect to earn up to £42,000 as you gain more experience, which is significantly higher than the £23,000 average for a fitness instructor.

#3 – Begin Offering Boxing Fitness Classes After Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

Offer Boxing Fitness Classes After Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

If you find yourself enjoying the boxing side of PILOXING, you could expand your skill set to begin offering boxing classes.

Boxing is a highly popular sport, with over 493,400 people participating in the sport in 2021. This could be a highly lucrative career progression option for a PILOXING instructor!

OriGym’s course takes just one day to complete and will teach you everything you need to know, from the history of boxing, to how to deliver a range of different drills.

Many gyms, including larger chains like Virgin Active, offer a variety of boxing classes. Becoming qualified to lead them will also help you stand out amongst applicants applying for fitness instructor jobs.

For example, this job role from Achieve Lifestyle asks for candidates who have specialist qualifications alongside their Level 2 Fitness Instructor certification.

Become piloxing instructor with specialised qualifications

This CPD qualification combined with your PILOXING knowledge and experience will help you to stand out as a fitness instructor and may increase your earning potential!

#4 – Teach Pilates Alongside Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

Teach Pilates Alongside Becoming A PILOXING Instructor

On the other hand, if you feel the Pilates side of PILOXING is more up your street, you could become a Pilates instructor

Alternatively, you may want to teach both Pilates and boxing classes to appeal to an even wider range of clients!

Leading Pilates classes can be a highly rewarding career option, as you’ll be able to help those struggling with muscle weakness, injury, or lower back pain to improve their flexibility and fitness.

You will also spend plenty of time helping your clients work on their technique, which is great if you enjoy guiding and motivating individuals to meet their SMART fitness goals

As a qualified fitness instructor, all you need to begin offering Pilates classes is a Pilates instructor qualification.

Piloxing instructor pilates qualification

Many Pilates courses allow you to specialise in a niche area, including:

  • Older adults
  • Lower back pain
  • Pre and postnatal

Having one of these advanced qualifications will allow you to offer services for those with specific needs, meaning you’ll be able to charge a higher price for each session.

Being able to put an advanced Pilates qualification on your CV will also show potential clients and employers you’re an expert in your field.

This will help you be seen as a more trustworthy instructor, which will increase your earning potential. In fact, the average salary for a Pilates instructor is an impressive £30,000

If you want to become a Gymbox instructor, our comprehensive guide will provide you with insight on how to pursue this job role. We’ll break it down into these easy-to-follow steps:

Earning a personal training diploma will be a great first step in this process. You can learn about OriGym’s qualifications by downloading our FREE course prospectus here.

Step 1: Get Qualified to Become a Gymbox Instructor

Get Qualified to become Gymbox Instructor

Gymbox offers many different services to their customers, ranging from general fitness classes to yoga sessions. With this in mind, you will need to ensure that you’re actually qualified for the position you’re applying for.

For example, to apply for a yoga position at Gymbox, you’ll need a Level 3 yoga teaching diploma.

To become a Gymbox instructor who leads fitness classes, you will need one of the following qualifications:

The necessity of these qualifications are evident from the example job advertisement below, for a Strength and Sweat instructor:

Gymbox personal trainer salary Strength and Sweat

These qualifications are a necessity, as they are the entry-level qualifications to work in the fitness industry. To put it simply, you won’t be able to work at any gym without holding one of these qualifications.

This is largely due to the fact that the qualification provides you with a basic understanding of how to plan and teach a fitness class.

Without this knowledge, you’ll be regarded as unqualified for the position, and won’t be considered by the employer.

In addition to this, without earning one of these entry-level qualifications, you will not be able to get insurance. As a result, you could be found legally liable should a customer injure themselves in your class.

becoming a Gymbox trainer for classes

We will discuss the importance of insurance when becoming a Gymbox trainer later in this article, but keep in mind that not getting properly insured could result in serious legal consequences.

Now that you know what kind of qualifications are needed for this position, let’s move on to discuss what experience is required.

Step 2: Gain Experience In A Similar Role Prior to Becoming a Gymbox Instructor

Gaining Experience In A Similar Role Prior to Becoming a Gymbox Instructor

Gymbox upholds high standards for their employees, and for this reason you’ll be expected to hold some experience working as a fitness instructor prior to being considered for the role.

This is supported by this advertisement for the Strength and Sweat instructor role. Gymbox requires applicants to hold a minimum of a Level 2 fitness qualification, as well as at least 1 year worth of experience working in a similar role:

become a gymbox instructor Job Ad

This experience is a standard requirement for all instructing jobs at Gymbox studios, and can be seen in other advertisements for classes such as an Aerial Instructor:

Gymbox personal trainer salary Ariel instructor

If you want to become a Gymbox instructor, it’s clear you’ll need experience teaching a similar class to the role you’re applying for.

If you’re a newly qualified instructor, you’ll need to look for an entry level position before applying for a job at Gymbox. An example of a beginner-appropriate role can be found below:

How to become a gymbox instructor Fitness Instructor job

This is an example of an entry level position as you only need your qualification as a prerequisite. To find roles like this one, you should use sites such as:

Once you have been employed in this position for a year, you will then hold the appropriate amount of experience to pursue your dream role.

This is because Gymbox will then deem you to be appropriately qualified for their facilities, holding transferable skills such as:

  • The ability to plan and deliver successful fitness classes
  • Knowledge relating how to properly communicate with customers
  • Experience providing modifications for customers who struggle with certain aspects of the class

In achieving this, you can become a well-rounded confident instructor who is ready to take on the challenges of working with a successful fitness brand.

Step 3: Get Insured To Be A Gymbox Instructor

Get Insured To Be A Gymbox Instructor

As discussed earlier in the article, when learning how to become a Gymbox instructor, you will need to purchase appropriate insurance.

One thing to keep in mind is that Gymbox only hires instructors on a freelance basis, and does not provide insurance for instructors. This means that if you fail to protect yourself, you run the risk of facing legal repercussions.

Providers such as Insure4Sport offer the relevant coverage for fitness professionals. The essential policies needed for this role are:

  • Public Liability Insurance – If a client injures themselves after you demonstrate an exercise, they may make a claim against you. This insurance covers you against these sorts of claims made against you by students or contractors. Accidents can always occur, so it’s best to be protected.
  • Personal Accident Insurance – It’s not just your student who can get hurt – you might injure yourself during classes, too. Whether it’s a broken bone or something more serious, this insurance covers you if you get hurt on the job.
  • Loss Of Earnings Insurance – Bad injuries may leave you unable to work for many weeks or even months. This insurance provides financial support when you’re unable to work for longer than 14 days due to severe injury. Typical policies provide you with around 70% of your earnings before tax.
  • Equipment Insurance – You’ll have a wide range of equipment at your fingertips to provide clients with high-quality workouts. If this equipment is broken, damaged or stolen without insurance, you’ll have to pay out of pocket to replace it.

If you wish to learn how to become a Gymbox instructor, then securing the right insurance cannot be overlooked.

Whilst insurance may seem inconsequential to some, failure to legally protect yourself can result in serious consequences, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Now that you have all this vital information, let’s specifically look into how to become a Gymbox instructor through applying for jobs with the company.

Step 4: Find A Job As A Gymbox Instructor

Get Experience In A Similar Role Prior to Becoming a Gymbox Instructor

If you’re interested in becoming a Gymbox instructor, the best place to look is the company site itself.

Through their careers section, you will be able to find a list of all the current available vacancies throughout the company.

To ensure you know exactly how to apply for these roles, let’s break the process down:

First, whilst on the careers section of the Gymbox website, scroll towards the bottom of the page where you will find the section dedicated to ‘studio instructors’. Then, select the ‘Find Out More’ option at the bottom of the section:

Gymbox personal trainer salary section

Once selected you will be redirected to a Harri page which lists all the available positions that fall under the ‘Studio Instructors’ job description. For reference, this will look like this:

How to become a gymbox instructor jobs

Let’s take a closer look at the process of applying for these jobs, using the RHYTHM instructor position as an example.

All Gymbox jobs require at least 1 years experience. This is standard across all roles at Gymbox.

Once you have found the position you wish to apply for, the application is fairly straightforward. You will only need the following:

  • Your CV
  • A Photo of Yourself
  • A Phone Number for Contact
  • Your Eligibility to Work in the UK

Becoming a gymbox instructor application

Alternatively, another method of becoming a Gymbox instructor is to visit their studios, and enquire about a job in-person. In this instance, make sure to bring along your fitness instructor CV, and provide them with a means of contacting you.

If you’re interested in becoming a Gymbox instructor, then it’s fair to assume that you will want to know about the salary for the position.

According to Glassdoor the average salary of a Gymbox instructor ranges between £49,054 – £52,364/yr.

Gymbox personal trainer salary Glassdoor

For reference those who earn on the higher end of this scale will likely have more experience as a fitness instructor.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these figures are created as an average, accumulated from collecting the data of existing employees.

Therefore, the actual salary you are offered may differ from the proposed figure generated above. If you’d like further information on this matter, you could ask during your fitness instructor interview.

Step 5: Progress in Your Career After Becoming a Gymbox Instructor

How to Progress Your Career After Becoming a Gymbox Instructor

Once you’ve become a Gymbox Instructor, you don’t have to remain in the position for the rest of your career. You could choose to progress into other roles, either as part of Gymbox, or externally.

Let’s discuss the many career progression routes you could consider.

Progress Onto Becoming A Personal Trainer After Becoming A Gymbox Instructor

Progress Onto Becoming A Personal Trainer After Becoming A Gymbox Instructor

Another progression route you can choose to take is to become a personal trainer at Gymbox. Much like the role of an instructor, you will operate on a freelance basis, and need to pay rent for the studio.

In order to apply for these roles you will need to return to the Gymbox career section, but this time select the option specifically for personal trainers.

Gymbox personal trainer salary job section

You will then be redirected to the Harri job page, where you will be able to view all of the available personal trainer job roles within the organisation.

Much like the Gymbox fitness instructor positions, in order to become a personal trainer within the organisation you will have to meet specific requirements. This includes:

These prerequisites are unavoidable, as the Level 3 personal trainer qualification ensures you learn how to plan and deliver bespoke workout plans for individual clients.

Without taking the time to earn this qualification, you will lack this experience and won’t know how to create these programmes.

These necessities are echoed below in the advertisement for a PT role with Gymbox:

Becoming a gymbox instructor Ad for PT

You should also make note of the fact that Gymbox also allows personal trainers to teach group exercise classes. This means that you won’t have to give up your regular classes, and can still maintain your previous position as an instructor.

Becoming an employed personal trainer within Gymbox can provide a plethora of professional benefits to your career. For the most part this is facilitated by their in-house PT Academy, which is an internal process designed to aid your development within the organisation.

Gymbox’s PT Academy includes:

  • Attending a PT business course tailored to building a successful business within a Gymbox gym
  • Guidance on delivering a great product and service to your client with courses on client assessment, consultations, programming, exercise selection and correct exercise instruction/execution
  • Workshops and seminars throughout the year delivered by the in house experts and external reputable providers to ensure that you have access to the best, up to date and relevant information in the industry

Becoming a gymbox instructor study

In terms of discussing Gymbox personal trainer salary, the advertisement on the company site states that these rates are ‘up for discussion’.

This again may be influenced by how much experience you have prior to taking on the role, as those with more expertise can negotiate a higher pay.

With this in mind, Glassdoor reports that the Gymbox personal trainer salary ranges between £23k – £35k every year:

become a gymbox instructor PT Glassdoor

With this in mind, you can see just how lucrative progressing onto this role can be. Even better yet, this still isn’t the peak of your potential within Gymbox.

Increase The Range of Classes You Can Instruct At Gymbox

become a gymbox instructor teach different classes

Once you have learned how to become a Gymbox instructor, your professional development doesn’t need to stop, as you can build upon existing skills by expanding the range of classes you teach.

In order to apply for these roles you will need to acquire additional experience and qualifications. For example, if you wish to teach yoga classes then you will need to enrol on a Level 3 Yoga teaching course.

In doing so, you can learn valuable skills that will inform how you teach yoga classes within Gymbox studios.

For example, whilst enrolled on the course you will learn how to offer alterations for students that may struggle with specific poses and asanas.

One benefit of taking on these additional classes is an increased salary. Remember, Gymbox hires their instructors on a freelance basis, meaning the more hours you work and classes you teach, the more money you’ll make.

Take a look at the average salary of a Gymbox yoga instructor as reported by Glassdoor:

become a gymbox instructor Yoga Ad

From this screenshot alone, you can see just how beneficial it is taking on additional responsibilities at Gymbox. But this isn’t the only role you can progress onto within the organisation.

Progress To Master Training After Becoming A Gymbox Instructor

Progress To Master Training After Becoming A Gymbox Instructor

Another option available to you once you have become a Gymbox instructor is to advance onto the Master Trainer career within the organisation.

Think of this position as a form of higher management, in which you will be expected to meet the following requirements:

become a gymbox instructor Master Trainer

Compared to becoming a Gymbox instructor, you need much more experience to become a Master Trainer. This includes:

  • Minimum 200 hrs or equivalent yoga teaching qualification
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching in more than 3 yoga/holistic disciplines
  • Extensive experience teaching in studio/gym environment
  • Experience leading training
  • A Pilates qualification

how to become a bungee fitness instructor

First and foremost, before you can become a bungee fitness instructor, you will need to attend classes as a member. This step is invaluable, providing you with practical experience in this highly unique workout.

For example, bungee fitness may be a low-impact form of HIIT cardio, but it’s still an intense workout, especially on your core and back as your body works hard to maintain stability.

This experience will then inform how the movements affect your own body, which will allow you to make adequate preparations for your future class members.

Another advantage to attending classes before becoming a bungee fitness instructor is that you can experience different teaching styles, and better understand what makes a good fitness instructor, as well as what works well and what doesn’t when interacting with the class.

You’ll be better equipped to understand your future students, as you’ve been in their position and learnt from a variety of teachers to offer them the best class experience possible.

In short, attending classes prior to committing to bungee fitness instructor training will allow you to determine whether this career is right for you.

Step 2: Secure The Right Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

Step 2: Secure The Right Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

Now that you’re set on learning how to become a bungee fitness instructor, it’s time to get into the practicalities, which means discussing the necessary qualifications required for the role.

Within this section you will be provided with a brief overview of all the necessary qualifications required to perform the role of a bungee fitness instructor.

#2a – Complete A Level 2 Fitness Instructor Course

become a bungee fitness instructor by Complete A Level 2 Fitness Instructor Course

First things first, if you’re looking to teach any kind of fitness class, you will need to hold a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification

This is the absolute minimum qualification that gyms look for when hiring new applicants. Once achieved, it certifies the holder to teach and lead a variety of fitness classes.

During this qualification, you’ll learn fundamental skills and information to help you safely lead fitness classes. This helps prepare you for leading sessions with the public, as you’ll be more aware of what to expect and how to resolve any issues that may arise.

You’ll also learn vital theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will help to inform your performance in this role. This includes developing an understanding of the following areas:

  • Anatomy and physiology – How the participants body will respond to the bungee movements
  • How to motivate your students – This will inform your teaching style, ensuring you know how to get the optimum results from every class member
  • The wider fitness industry – You will learn important tactics such as how to market your fitness business to your target demographic

Become A Bungee Fitness Instructor with Level 2

These are all vital skills for establishing yourself within the fitness industry, allowing you to build a solid foundation of experience that can be built on with further qualifications.

Another thing to note is that this qualification will ensure that you can purchase fitness instructor insurance

This cannot be obtained by unqualified individuals, and can provide public liability protection, should a class attendee make a legal claim against you.

#2b – Do You Need A Specialist Bungee Fitness Instructor Training Qualification?

Do You Need A Specialist Bungee Fitness Instructor Training Qualification

When learning how to become a bungee workout instructor, it’s important to note that you will need to complete a specialist training qualification.

This is due to the fact that the practice is highly specialised and, without experience, instructors may struggle to perform the bungee related activities.

For this reason, bungee fitness instructor training courses will prioritise learning with a support harness and other rigging tools.

This is essential, job-specific knowledge that you can’t cut corners with if you want to teach classes safely. Therefore, committing to a bungee fitness instructor training course will prepare you for:

  • Managing your own equipment in the future
  • Informing students how they should use the equipment during class
  • Creating variations for movements that students struggle with

You simply could not learn all of the vital information necessary without a specific course, which is why specialist bungee fitness instructor training is so important.

Think of it this way, without an in-depth knowledge of suspension cords and harnesses, you will be putting your own safety and that of your students at risk.

In addition to this, the majority of employers who hire bungee instructors will ask them to already hold a specialist fitness qualification. Some may offer to financially support you through this process, but this is not a guarantee!

An example of specialist bungee fitness training courses in the UK can be found in BungeeFit, who provide a reputable education with a hands-on learning experience that will prepare you for your future career role.

When learning how to become a bungee workout instructor you should choose your qualification provider carefully. Be sure to conduct research in order to ensure the facility is right for your specific needs.

#2c – Completing A Level 3 Personal Training Qualification Will Boost Your Bungee Fitness Employment Prospects

bungee fitness instructor training uk personal training

When learning how to become a bungee fitness instructor you may wish to consider completing an additional Level 3 personal training qualification

Whilst not a necessity, this certification can present you as a more desirable applicant in the eyes of employers.

Once you’ve earned this qualification you will be able to lead 1-to-1 sessions and provide the students with detailed guidance on a variety of fitness related topics.

For example, during this course you will learn how to plan and deliver bespoke workout programmes, designed to suit a client’s specific lifestyle and goals.

This can be integrated into bungee fitness, as you will now be able to offer the class’ students private sessions, tailored to them.

Step 3: Get The Right Insurance For A Bungee Fitness Instructor

Step 3: Get The Right Insurance For A Bungee Fitness Instructor

Once you have learned how to become a bungee fitness instructor the next step is to find insurance that will protect you during these exercise sessions.

Through purchasing fitness instructor insurance with providers such as Insure4Sport you will be able to protect yourself in case of unexpected accidents occur during your class.

Be aware that, whilst the term ‘bungee’ is not listed among the list of Insure4Sport list of covered sports and activities, the class will likely fall under other categories such as ‘acrobatics and circus skills’.

For clarity, we’d recommend directly contacting the providers, who will be able to provide you with a suitable solution.

These insurance policies will be as comprehensive covering you in the 4 main areas that legal claims often arise. Let’s break these down.

#3a – Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance Is Necessary to Become a Bungee Instructor

#1 - Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance Is Necessary to Become a Bungee Instructor

Public liability insurance is there to cover you from expenses that can arise from claims made by members of the public concerning incidents that happened as a result of your bungee fitness classes – e.g. an injury, or loss of/damage to their property.

For example, if you’re renting in a commercial space, you’re responsible for specific business insurance that covers you in case of damages within that space.

Some policies will also match the amount assigned to this area with professional indemnity insurance. This is covered in cases where people claim injury or property damage due to negligent services or advice.

These types of insurance are important once you’ve become a bungee fitness instructor because accidents can easily happen. Should one occur without this form of insurance, you could face fines and even jail time if the claim is successful.

#3b – Get Personal Accident Insurance After Your Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

#2 - Get Personal Accident Insurance After Your Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

This is one of the more popular policies for fitness professionals, as even though you’ve completed your bungee fitness instructor training, accidents can still happen at any given moment.

Personal accident insurance, as the name suggests, is there to help you cover any related expenses from an accident; for example, you may need extensive physiotherapy or other medical treatments to get back in shape after a serious injury.

This insurance will also cover you for loss of earnings during your recovery period, which is important if you find yourself unable to work for an extended amount of time.

#3c – Loss Of Earnings Insurance Can Protect You Once YouBecome a Bungee Instructor

#3 - Loss Of Earnings Insurance Can Protect You Once YouBecome a Bungee Instructor

Loss of earnings insurance is similar to personal accident insurance in that it helps you cover your expenses whilst you’re unable to work.

However, unlike the above, loss of earnings is applicable in cases of illness or unemployment/redundancy. This is all dependent on the terms and conditions of your specific policy, so be sure to read each section diligently.

In recent times, this type of insurance has seen several changes, so make sure you read your policy properly to understand your limits.

#3d – Become a Bungee Instructor With Equipment Insurance

#4 - Become a Bungee Instructor With Equipment Insurance

As you’ll learn from your bungee fitness instructor training, a lot of equipment is involved in this exercise class – which adds up to a fair amount of money.

So, having equipment insurance is just good business sense because this will protect you against unexpected expenses if/when you need to replace lost or damaged equipment.

In addition to offering you protection, insurance lends you credibility. Gyms are unlikely to hire you or rent their available spaces without it, and it’s desirable to customers because it means they can feel safe with you as their bungee fitness instructor.

Why You Should Create A Waiver After Your Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

They may not be fun, but understanding waivers is an essential part of learning how to become a bungee workout instructor.

A waiver is a legal document in which participants of an activity ‘waive’ their right to claim against the instructor/leader of said activity. Their use is particularly common for exercise sessions because of the potential risks involved with different sports.

For example, bungee fitness falls into this category because of the equipment involved. Harnesses and suspension rigging present an increased risk, so your students must be informed of this beforehand.

In short, the content of these forms states that a client understands the risks they’re taking by participating in the activity and that it’s not the fault of the instructor if accidents occur.

how to become a bungee fitness instructor

Even with bungee fitness instructor training under your belt, accidents can happen at any time, regardless of the amount of experience a student has.

Using waivers as part of your business practice protects you whilst reminding customers of the risks involved and encouraging them to exercise safely and listen to instructions.

Landing Your First Role After Your Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

Once you have completed bungee fitness instructor training in the UK, you will no doubt be eager to land your first job in the role.

Pursuing this career can be somewhat difficult, and for this reason there are a number of things that you should take into consideration when applying for these roles.

For starters, whilst this is an exciting professional opportunity, the bungee scene in the UK is still emerging, which can make finding employment opportunities harder to come across.

This is why we recommended having additional certifications, such as the Level 3 personal training qualification, as this will help you stand out among other candidates.

how to become a bungee workout instructor example

If you’re looking to become a bungee fitness instructor, you must also consider the practicality of the facilities in your local area.

In order to conduct these classes you will need a location that is high and sturdy, as this will allow you to securely attract the suspension lines.

Bungee equipment isn’t cheap either, which may mean that some gyms and studios simply don’t have the budget to facilitate the class.

For this reason, if you’re questioning how to become a bungee fitness instructor, you should look at more high end fitness establishments.

All of this isn’t to say that finding employment is impossible, but keep in mind these opportunities will typically be in private/bespoke studios, which either exclusively run bungee fitness sessions, or specialise in aerial exercise classes.

For example, both Hype Fitness in London and The Circle Gym Club in Glasgow are privately owned studios that offer bungee fitness to their members.

You can also reach out to gyms or studios directly in order to enquire about employment opportunities. This action shows that you’re proactive and passionate about becoming a bungee fitness instructor.

As evident from the screenshot provided below, there are a number of studios across the country that specialise in specifically delivering bungee fitness classes:

When it comes to finding a job, name recognition can be incredibly helpful in the fitness industry. This is why we strongly recommend gaining as much experience as possible before seeking out bungee fitness instructor jobs.

Open Your Own Studio That Specialises In Bungee Fitness

Open Your Own Studio That Specialises In Bungee Fitness

As we have stated, due to the somewhat niche nature of bungee fitness instructor training in the UK, there aren’t a lot of studios available to the general public.

This is something that you can capitalise on, through opening your own bungie fitness business.

Not only will this provide you with benefits such as an increased earning potential, but it will also expand the existing job market. As a result, you will be able to create more jobs for individuals who are looking to become bungee fitness instructors.

To learn more about how you can make this aspiration a reality, let’s break down the process step by step.

The Basics Of Owning Your Own Bungee Fitness Studio

The Basics Of Owning Your Own Bungee Fitness Studio

Opening your own bungee fitness studio will take a lot of work, and should only be approached by those looking to put in the time and dedication.

In order to ensure your business is a success, you will need to consider the following factors:

  • Experience – You’re better off opening a studio after gaining experience in a similar role, as this will prepare you for the demands of the position. For example, you could pursue a gym manager job role in order to learn about the administrative duties.
  • BudgetRunning a business requires money, so you will need to take time to forecast your outgoing and incoming finances. This will provide you with clarity on what your monthly budget will be.
  • Qualifications Of course you’ll already have your bungee fitness instructor training, but you should explore if there are any other certifications that will make your business more successful. For example, a personal training diploma means you will be able to offer private sessions to your clients.
  • Legalities – You will have to register your business with the UK.Gov, this step cannot be skipped and is therefore a vital necessity.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Bungee Fitness Business

Become a Bungee Fitness Instructor Location

Choosing the right location for your bungee fitness studio is essential, when deciding on a site you will need to consider factors such as:

  • Size of the premises
  • The facilities on offer – e.g. changing rooms
  • Accessibility points – e.g. wheelchair access

With each of these factors you will need to question whether your equipment will work in the location, and whether clients will be able to work safely. For example, you will need strong ceilings suitable for attaching suspension cables to.

Another factor to consider is whether you wish to rent or buy a location. This will largely be determined by your own desires and budget, with the final decision being subjective to your own business.

Those who are looking to own their own bungee fitness studios have a variety of options available to them. For example you could contact your local council and enquire about spaces to rent.

Possible locations for your business can be found on the UK Government website, which lets you search properties to let in your local area:

Gov Bungee Fitness Instructor Training UK

You can even get in contact with the council to see if you can change the denomination of a listing if you can prove it will add value to your local area. This could be an old sports hall or community centre.

In this instance, you can cite that as a fitness business you are looking to improve the overall quality of your clients’ lives.

On the other hand, using websites like Rightbiz (pictured below), VenueScanner, or 4Prop will help you sift through commercial properties in your area that are available for rent or purchase.

RightBiz Become a Bungee Fitness Instructor

We advise that you always do your research before entering into a contract, as this will ensure you find a property that is right for your business.

Managing Your Own Bungee Fitness Studio

Managing Your Own Bungee Fitness Studio

  • Managing Your Equipment
  • Managing The Budget
  • Creating A Schedule
  • Creating Business Strategies
  • Designing your gym’s business plan

This may seem like a daunting task, but with the correct experience you should be able to develop a strategy for tackling each of these responsibilities.

As previously mentioned, we recommend looking for employment as a gym manager prior to owning your own business. Through this role you will be ankle to gain experience each of the aforementioned responsibilities, as evident from this ad for Elite, Stockton:

The gym manager role will provide you with invaluable insight into what it takes to run a fitness business. You can then transfer this knowledge and experience and apply it to your own business to ensure its success.

Expand To Include Other Aerial Exercises Alongside Bungee Fitness

If you’re not content with just learning how to become a bungee workout instructor, you could choose to incorporate additional aerial exercise into your repertoire.

This section will expand on possible services that you can pursue in addition to bungee fitness, but be aware that each of these examples will require you to earn additional qualifications.

Upon completing bungee fitness instructor training, you may find that several of these exercises are easier to understand and pursue. This is largely because you will have prior experience to pull from, such as knowing regarding safety measures when using aerial equipment.

With all of this in mind, let’s break down some aerial additional services:

In an aerial yoga class, students perform their poses with the added support of a silk hammock that has been suspended from the ceiling. This is said to hold benefits such as an increased sense of flexibility and bodily strength.

To teach aerial yoga as an instructor you will need to hold a Level 3 Yoga diploma at minimum. You do not need a specialist qualification in this instance, as finding an accredited provider of aerial yoga courses is incredibly rare.

In most cases, employers will consider applicants based on their holistic experience with yoga. This is evident from the following job ad for an aerial yoga instructor at Gymbox:

Using Pole Fitness After Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

Pole fitness has become increasingly popular over the last decade because it’s a great alternative core and strength workout for all abilities.

To lead classes, you will naturally have to complete a Level 2 fitness instructor course, but this qualification will also need to be accompanied by specialist training.

There are several providers across the UK that offer pole instructor training. For example Xpert Fitness has courses for Pole Fitness 1-2 and 3-4, Spinning Pole and specific training to teach children’s or pre/post-natal classes.

This specialist information will be invaluable when it comes to conducting your classes in a safe and informative manner.

  • Strength
  • Flexibility
  • Balance

To lead these courses you will again need to hold a Level 2 fitness instructor qualification along with specialist training.

Whilst each of these entities can be taught separately, providers such as Flying Fantastic will give you a solid grounding in all three and you can decide to specialise further from there.

The Benefits of Expanding into Other Aerial Practices After Your Initial Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

The Benefits of Expanding into Other Aerial Practices After Your Initial Bungee Fitness Instructor Training

Outside of offering these exercise classes as part of your larger portfolio, learning new aerial disciplines can help you become a better bungee fitness instructor.

As you gain experience, you may find it possible to include the various skills and poses into your already existing bungee fitness sessions, creating a more well-rounded experience for your students.

For example, learning aerial yoga will help you develop a better understanding of posture and how this can be applied to any elevated exercises within the bungee harness.

On the other hand, some of the inversions from aerial hoops or silks could be adapted to work with the suspension rigging, which allows you to create harder practices for more advanced students.

Pole Perfect Fitness is a perfect example of how bungee fitness can be incorporated into an existing aerial fitness studio.

Before we start, if you’re not already qualified, check out OriGym’s Personal Trainer Diploma which will give you all of the skills and expertise you’ll need to become a Boxercise instructor!

You can find out more information about all of our courses by downloading our free course prospectus here!

Step 1: Get Qualified to Become a Boxercise Instructor

certificate become a boxercise instructor graphic

If you’re wondering how to become a Boxercise instructor, the first thing that you need to do is to get qualified.

There’s a few different stages to getting qualified so we’ll explore each of these in detail now.

You Need to Complete a Level 2 Course Before Undergoing Boxercise Instructor Training

Before you can get a specific qualification to become a Boxercise instructor, you’ll need to complete a Level 2 fitness instructor course.

As well as being the minimum requirement to complete a Boxercise course, it’s one of the qualifications you need to work in any gym or health club.

For instance, this job advert for a group exercise instructor below states that a Level 2 qualification is required for all applicants:

Level 2 become a boxercise instructor image

As well as being a necessity for getting a job, gaining this qualification is also a great way of preparing you for the Boxercise instructor course and means you can become a group fitness instructor.

This is because an Ofqual regulated course will equip you with all of the fundamental skills and knowledge you’ll need to make a fitness class successful

The Ofqual regulation means that the course has met the industry standards of education, teaching, and assessment, so will prepare you for a successful career!

Option One: Undertake a Boxercise Instructor Course

If you want to teach an official Boxercise class, you must have a qualification from Boxercise.

As we mentioned earlier, you must have already become a fitness instructor in order to complete this course, as shown below in the Boxercise course specification:

course become a boxercise instructor image

As Boxercise classes are trademarked under their brand name, they require you to complete one of their specific courses in order to teach one of their classes and get a job as an official Boxercise instructor.

However, if you’re applying for a general fitness instructor role instead of a specific Boxercise instructor job, employers will be less likely to expect you to have this qualification.

Option Two: Complete a Boxing CPD Course

Another option if you want to become a Boxercise instructor is to take a coaching course specifically in boxing.

You can do this through specific courses, such as CPD courses. These courses cover techniques and expertise needed to boost your fitness instructing skills.

They will usually go alongside a Level 2 or 3 personal trainer course and can be used to enhance and develop a specific niche in fitness.

Completing specialised courses like this opens up the amount of places you can work in, such as in this job advertisement below which highlights how they’re seeking those with boxing qualifications or skills:

job CPD become a boxercise instructor image

Most general boxing and padwork courses will cover a lot of the same material as a Boxercise class, meaning you’ll be more than qualified to apply for jobs such as the one above.

Option 3: Get Experience Teaching Classes Working as a Fitness Instructor

Aside from studying for a formal qualification, while working as a fitness instructor, you can gain experience in this area by simply teaching classes dedicated to boxing.

If working at a gym, you might shadow another fitness instructor who already has experience providing this type of fitness, allowing you to understand the basics so you can begin offering these yourself.

For example, you may hold a range of group fitness classes for different types of exercise. One of these can include boxing. The more of these classes you offer, the more you’ll gain experience in this area.

Although you may not have a specific qualification for boxing, you can still advertise this service to attract more clients who want to engage in a beginner’s class of this kind.

Get Qualified as a Personal Trainer to Become a Boxercise Instructor

Though it’s not explicitly a necessity to have a Level 3 personal trainer qualification to be a Boxercise instructor, there’s plenty of benefits for your career prospects and teaching technique!

You’ll build on everything you learn at Level 2 to help you develop your skills and knowledge which will inform your classes.

For example, you’ll cover techniques such as learning business skills to help you market yourself and your classes.

This will help your classes grow and ultimately help you to make more money!

Building on everything you learn at Level 2 you’ll also acquire new and significant skills that will enhance your earning prospects and allow you to apply for more roles.

It’s a way of setting yourself apart from the competition when you’re applying for jobs. In fact, plenty of gyms will now say they prefer applicants to have a Level 3.

For instance, this role explicitly says that they would prefer applicants be Level 3 qualified:

level 3 become a boxercise instructor image

So, as you can see, completing a Level 3 PT course will boost your career prospects and income, as PT instructor roles are generally higher paid.

What Does a Boxercise Instructor Course Consist Of?

The official Boxercise instructor course is designed to help you gain the fundamental knowledge and techniques from boxing for fitness and coaching.

You’ll learn all the techniques needed to become a Boxercise instructor teaching classes or working one-to-one with clients.

You’ll cover topics such as:

  • The 8 punches, and how to safely teach them to others
  • The importance of correct footwork, including drills 1-18 from the Boxercise Footwork Training System
  • Different class styles, including aerobics, circuits, coached pads, beasting sessions and bootcamp-style formats
  • Putting punches together to create exciting routines, with different class formats and designs
  • How to choose and use boxing equipment correctly
  • Hand wrapping for the beginner

All options are £149 so you can decide which method is most convenient for you, whether you want to work face-to-face or distance learning.

As we mentioned earlier you can choose from 1 of 3 course formats:

  • Face to face which is completed over 8 hours in just one day, at one of their training venues in the locations we showed earlier
  • Zoom which is equally completed in a day but over Zoom, lasting 8.5 hours
  • Distance learning where you complete the course in your own time, to fit your own schedule, with 6 hours of video tutorials and a minimum of 5.5 hours of practice

Both the Zoom and face to face options have a practical assessment whereas the distance option has a multiple choice theory-based assessment.

You’ll also have to submit a practical video assessment.

You can also think about how you want to work when you’re choosing which option works for you.

For example, if you want to teach Zoom fitness classes, learning over Zoom may provide you with some of the skills you can use later when presenting a class in this way!

Like our own courses, if you don’t achieve the required standard and pass, you’ll be encouraged to retake the assessment at another time free of charge!

What Happens After You Complete Your Boxercise Instructor Course?

qualified become a boxercise instructor graphic

Once you’re qualified and you’ve become a Boxercise instructor, you’ll be required to pay an annual registration fee of £40 if you want to be on the International Register of Boxercise Instructors.

This enables you to utilise the Boxercise trademark and access resources such as:

  • Publicity materials including posters, logos, and loyalty cards
  • Online certificate access
  • A series of post-course videos to help get your started
  • Discounts on Boxercise equipment
  • Ongoing telephone or email support from Boxercise head office
  • The Boxercise Footwork Training System

On completion of the Boxercise instructor training, registered instructors can also gain access to the course for refresher purposes, free of charge.

If you’d like to expand your Boxercise knowledge even further, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake further Boxercise courses.

However, these are not necessary for securing a job as a Boxercise instructor.

The Boxercise Course Pathway below highlights the courses that qualified Boxercise instructors may choose to take in order to further develop their expertise:

We’ll discuss these further in the career progression section of this article.

Tips on Passing Your Boxercise Training Course

We know that the thought of being assessed can seem daunting. That’s why we’ve got some tips on remaining calm and making sure you pass your Boxercise instructor course!

#1 Attend a Few Boxercise Classes as a Student Before You Become a Boxercise Instructor

One of the most important things to do before you begin your Boxercise instructor training course is to attend regular classes yourself.

Although Boxercise stipulates that you don’t need any previous boxing experience to access the course, the more you know about classes beforehand, the easier you’ll find the training.

This means that you’re much more likely to pass the course the first time around.

You’re also likely to be a better instructor yourself, as you’ll be able to learn through observing other instructors.

You can pick up tips on class structure and delivery for when you’re being assessed yourself.

By seeing how other people deliver a class and the kind of tone and instruction they give to class members, you can see what works well and what you want to emulate in your own delivery!

#2 Focus on Your Abilities as a Boxercise Instructor Rather Than Your Boxing Technique

When it comes to taking your practical assessment on the face to face or Zoom course, you’ll find that it is only based upon what you’ve been taught on the day.

Although on the course you’ll learn about the different Boxercise styles and all 8 punches, the focus won’t be on perfecting your technique. This is impossible to learn in one day!

Instead, the course focuses on how you can safely coach and teach these elements to others.

teaching become a boxercise instructor graphic

This means that when it comes to the practical assessment, your assessors will be judging you on your demonstrating, coaching, and instructing quality.

Boxercise emphasises the fact that no marks will be awarded for demonstrating extra speed or power during your assessment, so it’s important not to focus too closely on your own boxing technique.

This will allow you to demonstrate your ability to teach safe, informative, and fun classes for your future clients!

#3 Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions During Your Boxercise Instructor Training

Unless you’ve chosen the distance learning option, you’ll be completing your Boxercise course all in one day.

This is quite an intense format, meaning you’ll have taken in a lot of information at once, focusing on remembering as much as you can and applying it practically at the end.

Therefore, if you’re unsure of anything when it comes to taking your practical assessment, be sure to ask your trainer before completing your exam.

questions become a boxercise instructor graphic

The trainers teaching you will have excelled on the same course that you’re taking and are experienced individuals who want you to pass and succeed!

So, even if nobody else does, don’t be afraid to ask for help, as you’ll be much more prepared for your assessment and for running your own classes in the future!

Step 2: Secure the Right Insurance for a Boxercise Instructor

insurance become a boxercise instructor graphic

Once you’re qualified as a Boxercise instructor, the next thing that you need to do is get yourself insured.

This is just as important as gaining a Boxercise qualification, as a good insurance policy will cover you both financially and legally in case things go wrong during a session.

Personal trainer insurance is a legal requirement for anybody working in a fitness facility or working with individuals in independent classes.

You’re protecting yourself legally if anybody should sustain an injury during class and makes a claim against you, a Boxercise insurance policy will cover any legal costs and compensation claims that you may have to pay.

The four main types of holistic insurance that you’ll need as a Boxercise instructor are:

  • Public Liability InsuranceThis provides cover if a class member sustains an injury during a session, as well as any third-party damage that may be caused to their property.
  • Personal Accident InsuranceThis covers you if you’re unable to teach for a period of time due to injury.
  • Loss of EarningsAlso known as Income Protection Insurance, this covers you if illness is preventing you from teaching and earning a regular income.
  • Equipment InsuranceAny equipment used during your Boxercise classes is covered by this insurance, particularly if it is lost, stolen, or gets damaged.

Although Boxercise doesn’t offer insurance themselves, there are a number of external companies who can provide cover for Boxercise instructors.

A great example of such a provider is Protectivity, who provide a full Boxercise Instructor Insurance package starting at just £4.29 per month.

protectivity become a boxercise instructor image

The standard package comes with Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance, and you can add on the other policies at an extra cost.

Starting at just £4.20 per month, you can get your own personal quote from Protectivity to suit your needs as a Boxercise instructor by filling out a simple form on their website.

insurance become a boxercise instructor image

The exact cost of a Boxercise instructor insurance policy will vary, depending on the level of coverage that you select.

However, here’s an example of the price that you’re likely to be quoted if you take out a policy from Protectivity, which includes all of the main types of insurance we’ve discussed above:

Step 3: How You Can Find Boxercise Instructor Jobs

laptop become a boxercise instructor graphic

After gaining your qualification and choosing the right insurance, you should then be ready to find a role as a Boxercise instructor.

One of the most popular ways of finding Boxercise instructor jobs is by applying to teach within a gym or fitness centre.

As we mentioned earlier, Boxercise is a trademarked brand and so there’s a licensing fee to teach under their name.

This can be an unwanted expense if you’re just starting up as a Boxercise instructor, so by choosing to work at a large-scale commercial gym, they will cover the cost for you.

There are a few gym chains within the UK that run Boxercise classes, and as a result may be looking for a Boxercise instructor. These include Village Gym and Fitness First.

Alongside commercial gyms, you may find that smaller, independent gyms also run Boxercise classes, such as this independent fitness centre in Sutton Coldfield:

find job become a boxercise instructor image

You can also use the search tool on the Boxercise website to find gyms, fitness centres, and health clubs that offer classes near you.

The best way of finding Boxercise instructor jobs is by looking on general job boards such as

You could also use Leisure Jobs, which is a fitness-specific job site.

You may be able to find an employer looking for a specific Boxercise instructor, such as the role below:

job 2 become a boxercise instructor image

More often than not these positions are advertised on job boards as holistic fitness class instructor positions.

This is because they’ll want to hire a fitness instructor who can teach multiple group exercise classes, or are at least qualified to cover several different classes.

For example, this job from JD Gyms one of the qualifications they’re asking for from prospective employees is Boxercise, but amongst others and falling under a generalised fitness instructor role:

The Average Salary When You Become a Boxercise Instructor

salary become a boxercise instructor graphic

If you’re wanting to become a Boxercise instructor, we’re sure that you’d like to know what the average salary is for this role.

It can be difficult to establish an average because these are often based on salaries people have explicitly declared.

Since there’s technically no limit to what you could earn if you were independent, running classes online or out of your own studio or gym, it’s difficult to calculate an average.

When you’re starting out it can be hard to find a specific Boxercise instructor role, so you can get a better idea by looking at the average fitness instructor salary in the UK.

According to Indeed, Glassdoor, and Totaljobs, the average salary for a fitness instructor is between £18,000-£26,000 per year:

glassdoor average become a boxercise instructor image

However, this figure can vary, based upon:

  • Location
  • Whether your gym is commercial or independent
  • Level of experience

Step 4: Career Progression Options After You’ve Become a Boxercise Instructor

class become a boxercise instructor image

Once you’ve become a Boxercise instructor you may be looking for progression routes that you can take to further develop your career.

Here are three potential career progression options that you might consider as a qualified Boxercise instructor.

#1 Train Clients in 1-on-1 Personal Training Sessions as a Boxercise Instructor

Once you’ve established yourself as a Boxercise instructor, you may want to work with clients one-to-one as a personal trainer.

As previously mentioned in step 1, you’ll need a Level 3 Personal Training qualification to do this.

You can then use this qualification to progress your career into tailored training for individual clients, which can often be more lucrative.

This is because alongside working as a group fitness Boxercise instructor, you’ll be able to increase your client base by delivering bespoke exercise plans.

one to one become a boxercise instructor image

Because these plans are individualised too, you’re able to charge slightly more and have several different revenue streams!

Your services will therefore appeal to those clients who may be looking for more specific help to allow them to meet their fitness goals.

As we’ve discussed, employers are also much more likely to take on those with a Level 3 qualification over a Level 2, as you’ll have more skills, knowledge, and experience to offer to their members.

Due to the fact that you’re able to provide more services, a personal trainer salary also tends to be a lot higher than a fitness instructor.

For example, according to Totaljobs, the average salary for a personal trainer can range from £23,000 to £42,000, with the average being £27,000:

av salary PT become a boxercise instructor image

Once you’ve completed your Level 3 qualification, you’re also able to take advanced Level 4 courses to develop a niche and become an elite fitness professional.

Some examples of advanced Level 4 courses you can take are:

This will increase your earning potential even further, as you’ll be able to develop a niche and work with clients who have more specific needs than the average gym goer.

You’ll also have more services to offer, so your CV will be more attractive to potential employers!

#2 Expand Your Skills to Teach Further Classes Alongside Being a Boxercise Instructor

learn become a boxercise instructor graphic

As well as working as a Boxercise instructor, you may want to expand your skills and learn how to teach other classes.

Although as a qualified fitness instructor you’ll know how to lead group classes, taking a Continuing Professional Development Course (CPD) will allow you to gain more in-depth knowledge of a specific area of fitness.

Some of the most popular CPD courses include:

These courses can be completed at your own pace, making them an easy and efficient way of expanding your skillset.

For example, after completing a kettlebell course, you’ll know how to incorporate kettlebells into your training sessions to deliver effective and creative workouts.

You’ll also be aware of how to effectively plan and deliver these types of workouts for groups and clients.

Having additional CPD qualifications such as this also looks great on your CV, as you’ll have more skills and knowledge that will attract employers and help you to stand out from the crowd.

This is because, as we mentioned earlier, employers are often looking for fitness instructors who have further qualifications and knowledge to lead multiple classes, as illustrated below:

job advert become a boxercise instructor image

#3 Take an Advanced Boxercise Instructor Course to Improve Your Knowledge

As previously mentioned, if you’d like to develop your knowledge and experience as a Boxercise instructor, you can choose to take 1 of 4 developmental courses, which are:

  • Boxercise Advanced Skills
  • Kick Boxercise
  • Speed Pads and Combinations
  • Boxercise for Kids

Offered by Boxercise themselves, each course allows instructors to learn a new skill, meaning that they’re able to offer more to clients within their Boxercise sessions.

If you’re looking for a role as a Boxercise instructor, these further developmental courses can make your CV more attractive to potential employers and increase your earning prospects.

These are mostly for informing classes and allowing you to teach a wider variety of Boxercise classes. However, you’ll learn plenty of new skills you can use in a different context.

become a boxercise instructor 2 image

For instance, on the Boxercise Advanced Skills course, you’ll be taught 32 new defensive moves, including Duck, Slip, and Swayback.

Kick Boxercise adds value to classes by teaching Boxercise instructors how to use elbows, knees, and kicks to include different skills and variations in their sessions.

This means you can potentially branch out and offer classes based around mixed martial arts, combining techniques from:

  • Muay Thai
  • Kung Fu
  • Karate
  • Kickboxing

All developmental courses cost £99 and are available with both face-to-face and online distance learning options.

To find and enrol on a course near you, simply select the further developmental course page of your chosen course, and you should see a list of upcoming courses across the UK.

Step 1 – Getting Your Barre Instructor Certification

Getting Your Barre Instructor Certification

For those who are unfamiliar with the practice, Barre is a ballet-inspired class designed to test agility and strength, whilst offering the added benefits of shaping and toning participants’ bodies.

The first step to becoming a Barre instructor is getting the right certifications under your belt!

Whilst this specific section will explore 3 different qualifications that can increase your employability, it’s worth noting that every employer will have their own prerequisites in place.

For this reason, when applying for Barre instructor job roles you must always read the requirements diligently.

#1 – How To Get Barre Instructor Jobs With A Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification

How to Get Barre Instructor Jobs with a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification

Those who are researching how to become a Barre fitness instructor will first need to complete a Level 2 Fitness Instructor course. This qualification is essential, as without it you will not be able to teach fitness classes.

The necessity of this qualification can be seen in the following advertisement for a Barre instructor job vacancy with Virgin Active:

Barre instructor job vacancy

As you can see, without first earning a Level 2 Fitness Qualification, you will not be able to pursue this Barre instructor job role.

This certification is considered a necessity as it will also make you feel more confident in preparing for and leading the class at hand.

You’ll gain a solid foundation of knowledge relating to fitness, through the study of areas such as:

  • Fitness class teaching techniques
  • How to motivate groups
  • How to design and deliver a fitness class
  • Health and safety
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • The business side of the fitness industry

In addition to gaining the confidence to lead classes, earning a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification can be viewed as a necessity, as it is the only way you can acquire Barre instructor liability insurance.

Failure to provide evidence of this qualification can result in a lack of legal protection should a client ever claim a lawsuit against you. We’ll cover more on how to obtain this later in the article.

#2 – Complete A Specialist Barre Class Instructor Training

Les Mills become a cardio BARRE instructor

When learning how to become a Barre instructor, you will absolutely need a specialist qualification to teach the classes. There are plenty of accredited course providers that you can study under, including:

For this section, we’re going to specifically look at the Les Mills Barre qualification, as this is one of the most popular examples.

Les Mills Barre instructor courses are trademarked, meaning that you’ll need to hold a certified qualification with the company itself to lead their classes. This means that you won’t be able to teach Les Mills’ classes if you hold a qualification from another provider, such as The Barre Collective.

The difference between these qualifications will become evident when you begin to apply for Barre instructor jobs.

For example, this post from Exeter City Council specifies a trademarked Les Mills qualification is needed to be considered for the position:

Les Mills BARRE Instructor Jobs

When employers are specifically looking for a Les Mills Barre instructor they will make it apparent in the application. If the brand is not mentioned, you can assume that the employer will consider applicants who hold any form of certifications.

Les Mills is a well established fitness brand known across the entire world. Therefore by completing their Barre instructor course you’re guaranteed to earn a qualification that is upheld to a high standard in society.

This can also do wonders for your reputation in the industry, as other professionals and customers alike will hold you to the same high standards.

So, if you’re interested in learning more about how to become a Barre fitness instructor with Les Mills, the first thing you need to do is head over to their official website.

After selecting the Instructors tab on the drop down menu, you will be met with a series of options. You want to select the ‘Book Training’ text as seen in the graphic below:

This action will take you to a webpage where you will need to select the specific option of Barre class instructor training (it will appear at the bottom right hand corner). This will look like the image found below:

You will then be sent to a separate webpage that will allow you to book yourself onto any available Barre instructor courses in the UK.

how to become a barre instructor uk Online Training course

From the screenshot provided above, you can see that the next available course (as of writing this article) will begin on the 10th of December 2022.

Every course provider will have their own methods for enrolling students – this section merely used Les Mills as an example.

Once you’ve chosen your course provider, be sure to read the course requirements to ensure you have an understanding of how to apply.

But if this section has sparked your interest, check out these articles below:

#3 – Get Qualified As A Personal Trainer To Become An Ideal Candidate For Barre Instructor Jobs Roles

Become a cardio BARRE instructor PT

A Level 3 Personal Training course is technically an optional qualification, but it can greatly increase your chances of becoming employed as a Barre instructor.

Alongside helping you to further develop your knowledge relating to health and fitness, this qualification will also allow you to work with clients on a 1-to-1 basis.

This can come in handy as a Barre instructor as your students may approach you for personal training sessions that help to facilitate improvement within classes.

Essentially, completing a personal training course provides you with more professional opportunities, allowing you to earn money as a PT whilst simultaneously working for Les Mills.

This experience can also help you stand out in the eyes of employers, presenting yourself as a more qualified individual compared to your competitors. The importance of this qualification can be seen below in the advertisement for Ragdale Hall Spa.

Here you can see that Level 3 personal trainers are viewed as ideal candidates to lead holistic fitness programmes that include teachings similar to Barre.

How to become a BARRE instructor PT Level 3

Therefore, this could be the ideal option for candidates who wish to teach Barre alongside other fitness classes, rather than just specialising in the specific area.

What Does A Barre Instructor Course Consist Of?

What Does A Barre Instructor Course Consist Of?

Whilst most Barre instructor courses will teach a similar syllabus they won’t be identical to each other.

This is due to the fact that different course providers will have their own unique way of teaching – for example, Les Mills courses will exclusively teach the brand’s chosen choreography, that will not be available anywhere else.

With this in mind, you should always be sure to read a course’s content page to get an understanding of how the providers teach their students.

To keep this article consistent with the previous section, we’re going to be using Les Mills as an example again here.

The first thing you need to know about the Les Mills course is that it requires you to do prework:

PreWork Barre Instructor Job role

Once this pre-work has been completed, you will be able to attend the actual Zoom webinars, where your official training will commence.

To understand what these Les Mills Zoom classes consist of you should click the ‘More Info’ option on their Barre page. In doing so, you will be taken to the following webpage which provides you with further course details:

Details of Less Mills become a cardio BARRE instructor

From this breakdown you can see that the Les Mills Barre instructor training consists of 2 days of initial training, and a further 2 days of advanced training to be completed within 12 months of passing the initial section.

Throughout this training you will need to learn the essence of the Barre programme, and how it relates to the five principles of Les Mills:

  • Choreography
  • Technique
  • Coaching
  • Connecting
  • Performance

Adhering to these principles is particularly important, as when working with Les Mills you cannot create your own routines. Instead, you must adhere to the material that the company provides throughout the year.

This isn’t true for every qualification, as other providers will allow you to have creative freedom in the creation of your classes.

The only downside is that a lot of competitive courses lack the name recognition that comes along with a Les Mills qualification.

how to become a BARRE instructor

As of writing this article, Les Mills’ BARRE instructor training in the UK only takes place online. Other providers such as Barre Collective offer in-person training sessions, so if this is something you wish to pursue the options are out there.

This means that if you’re intent on earning a Les Mills certification you will need access to a computer and the internet. This will allow you to download training materials and send recorded proof for your assessments.

How Much Does A Barre Instructor Training Course Cost?

How Much Does a Barre Instructor Training Course Cost?

Just as there is no universal curriculum for a Barre instructor course, there is no set price either.

For this reason, we’d always recommend conducting some price comparison research, in order to find a qualification provider within your specific budget.

For example, the cost of enrolling on a Les Mills Barre course can range from:

  • £380 for an early bird registration
  • £425 for standard registration
  • £470 for the full-price registration

These price changes all depend on how far in advance you book your place on the BARRE instructor courses. If you wish to avoid increased fees, you should make it a priority to register early!

In addition to this, Les Mills instructors will also need to pay a set fee to attend quarterly updates throughout the year. In doing so, you will be provided with 2 new BARRE routines that you can teach to your class.

Failure to attend these quarterly classes will result in you teaching outdated BARRE choreography that does not reflect the brand’s current teachings.

Quaterlt how to become a BARRE instructor UK Updates

This isn’t to say that every provider will require you to attend quarterly updates.

Qualification providers such as The Barre Collective will see you pay one flat fee, in order to become qualified under them. This can be seen below, for the price of £600:

BARRE collective become a cardio BARRE instructor

This can be an example of conducting price comparison research – whilst the Barre collective will see you pay more upfront, the cost of being a Les Mills instructor will always be higher as a result of their quarterly updates.

Tips For Passing Barre Instructor Courses

Tips For Passing Barre Instructor Courses

The way in which you’re assessed during your Barre instructor course will differ from one provider to another.

For example, when studying with Les Mills’ once you’ve completed the initial 2-day Barre class instructor training, you’ll need to submit a video recording as part of your final assessment.

This assessment will consist of you leading a class of a minimum of 5 participants in a licensed venue. The recorded assessment is to show that you have taken the course on-board and can effectively teach a safe and effective class, in line with the Les Mills standard.

Submitting the video does not guarantee you will pass the course. Instead, in order to obtain this qualification a Les Mills instructor will have to deem you to hold a suitable amount of knowledge and experience in order to lead their classes.

Recording Barre instructor certification

Similarly, the Barre Collective requires its students to:

  • Submit a video assessment with a buddy from the course, in which they demonstrate that they are capable of leading a class
  • Pass a One-Hour Theory exam
  • Attend a final group session in which they will all lead a specific section of the class

With both of these providers in mind, we’re going to provide you with some holistic advice that can be applied to passing any Barre instructor certification:

#1 – Personally Attending Sessions Will Strengthen Your Barre Class Instructor Training

Become a cardio BARRE instructor tips

When learning how to become a Barre instructor, one of the best things you can do is personally attend as many classes as possible.

This is a great way of getting acquainted with the Barre teaching style, through the observation of a qualified instructor’s behaviour and approach to choreography.

For example, from attending these classes you can consider what attributes of the instructor you appreciate the most. You can then embed these characteristics into your own teaching style, in order to come across as an effective teacher.

In addition to this, if possible we’d recommend attending a course that is led by an instructor who holds the same qualification that you wish to earn. For example, if you wish to learn under Les Mills, then you should attend Les Mills Barre classes.

In doing so, you can get better acquainted with the course provider’s approach to learning, a factor which could potentially better your chances of passing.

#2 – Always Ask Questions During Your Barre Instructor Courses

Always Ask Questions During Your Barre Instructor Courses

We cannot state this enough, but never be afraid to ask questions. In doing so, you will only improve your education and chances of success when it comes to passing your assessments.

Qualification providers will typically always encourage their students to engage with the course and ask as many questions as possible.

For example, when completing online Barre instructor training in the UK, Les Mills will have a section of their zoom meetings dedicated to Q&As.

The answers that your instructors provide can help to shape your overall performance for the better. This can increase the likelihood of you passing, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

If you’re not comfortable asking these questions in a group environment you can always contact your instructor and ask them privately.

#3 – If You Want To Become a Cardio Barre Instructor, You’ll Need To Practise

If You Want to Become a Cardio Barre Instructor You’ll Need to Practise

As the old saying goes, ‘practice makes perfect’ and that is especially true for physical challenges like leading barre classes. During these sessions you will have to recall complex choreography from memory, so prior rehearsals will ensure things run smoothly.

You should get into a habit of diligently practising routines during your initial training. This can involve:

  • Asking your instructor for feedback on form
  • Recording yourself to observe areas for improvement
  • Asking friends and family members to act as a mock class

Essentially, this comes down to the more work you put in from the beginning, the better you’ll feel when it comes to recording your assessment.

#4 – Submit The Best Version Of Your Video Assessment To Obtain Your Barre Instructor Certification

become a cardio BARRE instructor

As previously stated in the article, many Barre course providers will require you to record and submit a video as part of your assessment.

You should not submit your first attempt at recording, as these drafts can be riddled with errors and basic mistakes. Instead, we’d recommend leading multiple rehearsals to ensure a polished final result.

Whilst a rehearsal may not entirely rid you of any potential nerves, it will help you to feel more confident in your ability to deliver a BARRE class.

It’s best to record multiple takes, as whilst this will be time consuming it provides you with more footage to work with. You can then determine which recording presents you in the best possible light and submit that for your assessment.

Step Two: Obtaining Barre Instructor Liability Insurance

Obtaining Barre Instructor Liability Insurance

Once you’re fully qualified you should make it an immediate priority to obtain a BARRE instructor liability insurance quote.

Being insured is essential for a variety of different reasons, for example it can provide legal protection when you’re planning on working:

  • With members of the general public
  • In public settings
  • With different pieces of equipment

Essentially, getting Barre instructor liability insurance will protect you from unexpected legal claims made against your practice. Providers such as Insure4Sport offer coverage from as little as £32.99 a month for £1 million in coverage.

Insurance example become a cardio BARRE instructor

Ultimately, when you’re looking to invest in Barre instructor liability insurance you need to make a subjective decision as to what provider and quote will work best for your business.

Whilst some providers may differ in their approach, generally Barre instructor liability insurance will typically cover:

#1 – Barre Instructors Must Have Public Liability Protection

Barre Instructors Must Have Public Liability Protection

Public liability insurance is essential for any business owner who regularly interacts directly with the public – whether they’re customers or private citizens.

As a qualified Barre instructor this is an insurance policy that cannot be avoided. This is because it will offer you legal protection should a client ever make a claim against you, following an injury or damage to their personal property.

In this instance, your insurance will cover your legal fees should a client state that you were personally responsible for said incident.

#2 – Personal Accident Insurance For Barre Instructors

Personal Accident Insurance for Barre Instructors

Personal accident insurance is designed to protect you should unforeseen events lead to a decline in your personal quality of life – e.g. through injuries.

This is a long-term policy that can provide you with money for your future, should the injury be so severe that it permanently prevents you from teaching another BARRE class.

#3 – Loss Of Earnings Insurance For Barre Instructors

Loss Of Earnings Insurance for Barre Instructors

Also known as income protection insurance, loss of earnings insurance is there to help you cover your expenses in the instance that an  injury or illness prevents you from being able to work.

This type of insurance comes in 3 main forms:

  • Accident
  • Sickness
  • Unemployment Insurance

As the name suggests, this is a short-term policy that tends to pay out for up to 12 months in the case of long-term sickness or recovery after an accident.

These premiums vary in how long and how much they pay out, as well as differing from one provider to another, so always read each policy diligently.

#4 – Barre Instructors Must Also Have Equipment Insurance

Become a BARRE instructor UK example

Equipment insurance is vital for business owners who rely on certain pieces of kit to do their job – for example, the free weights you’ll be using as a BARRE instructor.

This type of policy should cover you in case of accidental damage, theft, or loss of the property you use for your business, so you won’t have to constantly lose money replacing your equipment

Step Three: How To Find Barre Instructor Jobs

Step Three: How to Find Barre Instructor Jobs

To ensure that a full scope of careers is presented, we will discuss employers who take different qualifications into consideration:

As we have used Les Mills as an example throughout this article, let’s look at how you can specifically obtain a job with a Les Mills affiliated gym chain.

As you’re aware, Les Mills is widely known within the fitness industry for providing high quality fitness courses that encourage people to workout.

This reputation means that many popular gym chains choose to have affiliate relationships with Les Mills. This allows them to offer branded classes to their customers as part of their paid membership.

By choosing to become a cardio Barre instructor with Les Mills, you have the opportunity to work with popular gym chains in the UK such as:

  • JD Gyms
  • David Lloyds
  • Total Fitness
  • Nuffield Health

One of the easiest ways to find gyms in your area that offer Les Mills classes is to check on the company’s website.

By pressing on the ‘Find a Class’ option you can see what fitness centres in your local area offer BARRE classes. These could be regarded as future employers.

For example, from the screenshot provided below you can see that there are 15 sites offering BARRE in the London area alone:

But this tool isn’t just limited to Barre, as it can be applied to any Les Mills class of your choosing.

Use Indeed and Other External Job Sites to Look for Roles as a Barre Instructor

Whilst on the hunt for a Barre instructor jobs, it’s always worth checking various external job sites available such as:

  • Indeed
  • TotalJobs
  • Glassdoor

External sites are an easy way to find vacancies that are immediately available within your local area. This won’t just be limited to the likes of Les Mills, and will highlight jobs suitable for every Barre instructor.

For example, when using Indeed to look for Barre instructor jobs, the following results were pulled up:

Indede How to become a BARRE Instructor UK

Applying for Barre instructor jobs on external websites will be a fairly straightforward process.

Typically, you will simply be asked to attach your CV and cover letter to the application, but keep in mind that every employer is different and may ask more questions to assess whether you’re a desirable candidate.

External sites will also filter all the relevant information to ensure that you know the vacancy is worth applying for. This includes:

  • The proposed salary
  • The contract type – e.g. part or full time
  • Rating information on the employer

If you’re looking to become a cardio Barre instructor, visiting these external sites regularly will help you find employment teaching the classes.

#3 – Before Settling On A Barre Instructor Job Research The Competition And Consider Your Options

Before Settling on a Barre Instructor Job Research the Competition and Consider Your Options

After learning how to become a Barre instructor you will likely be eager to delve into the world of work. But before rushing into this process we recommend checking out various employers to see how they compare with one another.

From performing this research you will be able to determine whether the position is suitable for your specific needs. For example, you could determine whether the vacancy is offering a suitable enough salary for your personal experience.

According to TotalJobs, the average fitness instructor salary is roughly between £17,000 – £26,000 per year. Whilst Payscale reports an average earning of £8.81 per hour.

How to become a BARRE instructor payscale

Therefore, jobs such as this example from The Yoga Bar in London, which pays £30 – £40 can be viewed as a valuable form of employment for your consideration:

Another thing to note is that this is only a freelance role, and that you should also consider the type of contract on offer before accepting a job.

With both part-time and full-time contracts you may be expected to lead different fitness classes too, in order to fulfil multiple roles at the gym/fitness centre. For example, take a look at this example from FRESH:

How to become a BARRE instructor FRESH

Here you can see that Barre is just one responsibility, and that applicants will also have to lead classes in Pilates and Flexitone Release too.

From this, it can be concluded that if you wish to become a Barre instructor in the UK you will need to consider various factors before rushing the application process. This will provide you with time to determine whether the position is suitable for you specifically.

Step Four: Progress Your Career After Becoming A BARRE Instructor

Progress Your Career After Becoming a BARRE Instructor

Of course, your career development doesn’t have to end once you’ve obtained a Barre instructor certification. Which is why this section will explore potential options you can explore to progress professionally.

#1 – Take On Clients In 1-to-1 Personal Training In Addition To Teaching Barre Classes

#1 - Take on Clients in 1-to-1 Personal Training in Addition to Teaching Barre Classes

If you want to take a break from group fitness instruction, why not choose to become a personal trainer and work with clients on a 1-to-1 basis?

The first step in this new career option is to earn a Level 3 personal training qualification. As stated in the introductory section, this will qualify you to create bespoke training programmes for individualistic clients.

This is a fantastic career advancement opportunity for Barre instructors, as you will already have a large client base to recruit from your classes. For example, if a student comes to you after their session looking to advance their practice, you can recommend enrolling them on a personal training programme .

Barre Instructor Courses

You will also be able to advertise these PT services at the start of every session, by simply reminding your students that it’s on offer to them should they require it.

According to research conducted by Indeed, the average salary of a personal trainer in the UK is £21.60 per hour, which is a considerable increase from the standard Fitness Instructor example we provided in the previous section.

This is only an example too, as you can realistically set your own wage as a personal trainer, charging rates that reflect your experience in the industry.

For example, you could realistically charge more as a personal trainer by developing a niche. This is achieved through completing specialist training, such as one of OriGym’s accredited nutrition courses (UK).

Through earning this qualification you could realistically charge more for your PT services, as you can add meal plans onto a client’s programmes that help to facilitate their goals.

#2 – Get Qualified To Teach Other Les Mills Classes As A Barre Instructor

Les Mills how to become a BARRE instructor UK Courses

One great way to advance your fitness career is to get qualified to teach other Les Mills courses. The company has a variety of different classes you can explore, allowing you to incorporate a wide range of skills and experience into your repertoire.

If you chose to study with Les Mills for your Barre qualification then your chances of passing this new course increases, as you will already know what attributes they look for in instructors.

But even if you didn’t earn your Barre instructor certification with Les Mills, this doesn’t have to stop you from making use of the company’s other qualifications.

As long as you meet their prerequisites, you can realistically enrol on any of their courses.

Adding Les Mills certifications to your CV you’re increasing your desirability as an employee, which can open more doors for you as your career progresses.

#3 – Advance Your Barre Instructor Job Prospects By Becoming A Gym Manager

Advance Your Barre Instructor Job Prospects by Becoming a Gym Manager

If you’re looking to progress your career and take on more responsibility you could learn to become a gym manager.

When researching the job description of a gym manager, you will see that you will be required to fulfil roles and responsibilities such as:

  • Managing Staff
  • Scheduling Shift Rotas
  • Controlling the Gym’s Budget
  • Maintaining Equipment

Being a gym manager is a huge responsibility because you’re in charge of bringing the company vision to life and providing an excellent experience for all gym goers – the role will challenge you, but can be incredibly rewarding.

As you can see in the example below, you’ll need your Level 3 qualification in personal training that we’ve previously mentioned for this role.

Level 3 Gym Manager Job become a Barre Instructor UK

This is a requirement as it means you’re qualified to fulfil any role should a member of staff be unable to complete their duties.

Plus, if you’re a gym manager who holds a BARRE instructor certification you will be able to schedule regular classes that you can personally lead. This will ensure that you’re still making use of your Les Mills qualification, whilst working in a higher position.

Before You Go!

Now that you know how to become a Barre instructor you will be able to pursue this career option with confidence. In achieving this qualification, you will be officially regarded as an expert within this field.

Remember, a personal training diploma can greatly help with this entire process. Once you’ve graduated OriGym’s team of expert tutors will be on hand to provide you with career advice to ensure you thrive as a Barre instructor.

With the rise in popularity of their famous fitness classes, we’re not surprised that you’re looking at how to become a Barry’s instructor.

That’s why we have put together a comprehensive step-by-step guide on how to do just that. Here are the steps we will go through:

Before we begin, if you want to advance in the fitness industry, enquire about our Personal Trainer Diploma here at OriGym! Find this and more in our downloadable course prospectus.

Step 1 – Earn The Right Qualifications To Begin Your Career As A Barry’s Instructor

how to become a barry's instructor

First off, you’re going to need to gain the correct qualifications in order to be able to apply for a role at Barry’s so, let’s see what the requirements are and how to get started.

Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing

First off, you need to qualify to teach fitness classes, this qualification is called a level 2 certificate in gym instructing or fitness instructing (the terms are used interchangeably).

This is the bare minimum level of qualification required to work in a gym. This doesn’t allow you to teach 1-2-1 like a personal trainer, and become a group fitness instructor to teach group classes!

Take a look below at the requirements on a Barry’s job advertisement and what qualifications you need to apply:

how to become a barry's instructor

As you can see, the first thing on the list is a certification as either instructor or personal trainer, with experience working in either of these roles.

As we’ll explain in the next section, there are clearly some benefits of going one step further and having a level 3 pt qualification that can really help to benefit your practice as a Barry’s instructor since it goes further than a level 2.

That being said, let’s see how you can do just that.

Get Qualified As A Personal Trainer

With a level 2 in gym instruction being the basic qualification, you can get both of these certifications completed in one diploma.

This is called a Diploma in Personal Training

Within this course, you’ll learn both how to instruct a class and how to conduct 1-2-1 PT lessons which can be hugely beneficial for the financial prospects of your career.

Though the Barry’s classes are hugely popular, in the UK, there are only 3 major cities that have Barry’s studios. These are:

  • London (7 locations)
  • Manchester
  • Liverpool

That being said, it’s not like becoming a Les Mills instructor and having places everywhere to drop in and teach classes because you can only be a Barry’s instructor in a Barry’s studio.

So if you’re in the UK, you are limited to these cities, however, you can teach internationally as Barry’s have studios all over the world. If you’re just looking to stay in the UK though, becoming a PT can be a good way to do both.

For example, we took a look at the timetable for Barry’s Liverpool. There are 9 classes per day and with different employees, the page looks like this below:

how to become a barry's instructor

Within this daily timetable, there are only a maximum of two classes being held by the same employee. So, if you’re a Barry’s instructor, you’re going to have some spare time to make some money in other ways, like personal training.

There are tons of benefits to gaining your level 3 in personal training before applying for a Barry’s bootcamp instructor role. Not only are you going to have the ability to actually put this to use for your own benefit, but chances are that you’re going to be a preferred candidate over any other applications that are lacking a PT qualification.

Step 2 – Secure The Right Barry’s Instructor Insurance

how to become a barry's instructor

We know that there are tons of different personal training insurance policies to sift through, which is why we’ve done all the work for you. Here are the ones that you need to look into if you want to know how to become a Barry’s instructor.

Public Liability Insurance

First and foremost, if you’re already working in the fitness industry you might already have or at least be aware of Public Liability insurance.

This insurance covers you if you are to blame for any injuries that occur in your classes or care. This is typically the bare minimum when it comes to sports insurance policies as it covers a wide range of possibilities in every level of cover.

Something else to be aware of is Barry’s X, an online alternative to Barry’s. You can still teach live classes if you get a job this way through Barry’s and often depending on your policy of choice, you will still be covered under Public Liability.

For example, take a look at what Insure4Sport says about their fitness instructor policy.

how to become a barry's fitness instructor

You should speak to any managers at Barry’s should you become employed on which is necessary for your specific role.

Personal Accident Insurance

Another policy that is popular among instructors is called Personal Accident Insurance.

If you’re leading a fitness class, it is you as well as your clients that are at risk of injury. That is what this policy is for.

If you suffer anything whether minor or major on the job, this policy can cover you for even extreme incidents.

how to become a barry's bootcamp instructor

Loss of Earnings Insurance

Loss of earnings policies are a great way to protect yourself if you’re working for a company that doesn’t provide any cover for sick leave or if you’re self-employed working in different gyms perhaps.

If you sustain an injury that puts you out of work, you can claim on this insurance so you’re still getting paid whilst you recover. Some covers even pay up to £750 per week like Insure4Sport which is worth looking at if you work in the fitness industry in any capacity.

Step 3 – Find Your Job As A Barry’s Instructor

become a barry’s instructor

Once you have your qualifications and insurance out of the way, it’s time to find a job at Barry’s.

Whether it is internationally or nationally, it is actually extremely easy to find a role since you can only work at licensed Barry’s studios.

That being said, you can simply go on their website to see any job openings, this is the page you need to go on here:

Barrys careers

This is the careers page in which you can navigate easily.

Once you scroll down, you will see there is a section called “opportunities at Barry’s” where you can see two drop down menus like this:

become a barry’s instructor

All you have to do is choose the options that are relative to you and there will be a list of any available positions. You can then click into these and see the job descriptions just like our examples earlier.

If you don’t go to the website, you can use the likes of Google Jobs to see if there are any other postings nearer to you, like this below:

become a barry’s instructor uk

This way, you can head over to the likes of Glassdoor and look for any reviews on salary or treatment within the company from past employees.

Glassdoor is hugely popular for this kind of thing, it is easy to find at least approximate salaries if you’re interested in the company. Their page will look like this below:

become a barry’s instructor

As you can see, it can be helpful to find approximate numbers for particular roles, but we do recommend going straight to the Barry’s official site.

This is because it is going to be the most legitimate route as well as it being well explained on the requirements, location and responsibilities.

Step 4 – Career Progression Options After Becoming A Barry’s Instructor

how to become a barry’s instructor internationally

Finally, if you’re wondering what comes next for you as a Barry’s instructor, there is a ladder to climb and other routes to go down if you want a higher income all together.

Here are some of those options to consider:

#1 – Manage An Official Barry’s Studio

how to become a barry’s instructor in the UK

Becoming a manager with Barry’s can be a hugely successful way of making a higher income while doing what you love.

It can often be daunting going into the fitness industry self-employed since it can take time to build a client base but similarly to becoming a gym manager, this kind of role is a step up from the journey to become a Barry’s instructor to climbing the ladder and becoming a manager.

The good news about this role in Barry’s is that you’ll be required to work a minimum of 40 hours a week, meaning that you won’t go without hours and thus, have a healthy income that is secure.

This is of course attractive for a fitness professional looking for a salaried position as they know what is going to come in every month.

Take a look below at a snippet of the job description for managing a Barry’s studio:

how to become a barry’s instructor in the UK

As you can see, this is just regarding the client experience, not the other sections including:

  • Operations
  • Leadership
  • Culture
  • Requirements

The job description is lengthy and there is a lot expected from you to apply, including at least 2- years of experience in a similar role. Thus, it is something that you would need to climb the ladder to reach.

However, learning how to become a Barry’s bootcamp instructor is certainly the first step in the right direction!

#2 – Train Clients In 1-on-1 Personal Training Sessions

how to become a pt for Barrys

Something that can secure a fulfilling career in fitness is by combining your future as a Barry’s bootcamp instructor with a career in personal training too.

As we mentioned in step 1, it is desirable for you to have a level 3 in personal training and a level 2 in gym instruction to apply for Barry’s roles, so it would only make sense to utilise this qualification for your own benefit too.

You can use your qualifications by becoming a successful personal trainer, and can even go on to do things like take a level 4 in personal training to climb the ladder by unlocking more opportunities and getting more clients on board.

For example, if you decide to take a step up and become a qualified as a Level 4 Personal Trainer, you could start training specialist populations like obesity and weight management clients.

Thus, if you’re looking to climb the ladder at Barry’s, having a level 4 experience in any capacity of training prior to application is going to be hugely beneficial in your favour.

It shows that you know how to instruct and that you are dedicated to a long and lucrative career in this sector thus, making the perfect candidate!

#3 – Teach your Own Fitness Classes as a Freelancer

how to become a pt for Barrys bootcamp

If you’re interested in how to become a Barry’s instructor, you undoubtedly have an interest in being a fitness professional. That being said, you might be interested in progressing your career into a freelance class instructor.

This can be done alongside your role at Barry’s since you have the ability to choose your hours and where you work as a freelancer.

These are almost always in demand, things like Les Mills classes or just generic weekly fitness classes are hugely popular for freelancers to teach in various gyms. Take a look at this job vacancy for example:

how to become a pt for Barrys bootcamp

As you can see, you’re getting more than double the national hourly minimum wage in the UK for a 45 minute class! This is typically uniform across gyms, the pay out is healthy so if you gain contracts with multiple different gyms, it can be great for business.

You could assign yourself ‘X’ amount of hours outside of the Barry’s timetable to make some extra money, make new connections in the industry and even get 1-2-1 training clients by meeting new class members week on week.

It is a route perfect for anyone who loves to teach classes and have a secure income.

Before You Go…

Hopefully you know what tools you need to become a successful Barry’s instructor, ensure you keep an eye on their careers site for any updates.

Becoming a Les Mills BODYATTACK instructor is an exciting career move with opportunities across the UK. We’ve curated the perfect guide to help you on this journey, covering:

If you want to know how to become a BODYATTACK instructor, make sure you’re qualified with a Personal Training Diploma! You can learn more about this and the range of other fitness courses we offer by downloading our course prospectus.

Step 1: Getting Qualified as a BODYATTACK Instructor

les mills bodyattack training 1

The process of becoming a BODYATTACK begins with you gaining a level 2 gym instructor qualification. This is for two reasons.

First, most job vacancies at gyms and leisure centres require you to have this qualification to demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to run group fitness classes. Secondly, a level 2 qualification is required for you to be covered by the facilities insurance policy.

David Lloyd in London, for example, recently advertised for a BODYPUMP instructor. Like BODYATTACK, BODYPUMP is a class created by Les Mills, so it’s safe to say the role requirements are the same for the two.

becoming a bodyattack instructor 1

The text we have highlighted indicates they are searching for a member of staff with a level 2 qualification, along with the relevant Les Mills qualification.

Aside from being a job requirement, completing a level 2 qualification also informs you how to correctly teach fitness classes and create successful sessions for groups. These skills translate to the BODYATTACK class when you’ve to manage larger numbers of people.

If you already have a gym instructor qualification, then you can skip straight to achieving the relevant Les Mills qualification – in this case, a BODYATTACK course.

However, if you don’t hold this qualification, this should be the first certificate you should obtain.

Take a Les Mills BODYATTACK Course

les mills bodyattack courses 5

After achieving your gym instructing qualification, you will then need to carry out Les Mills BODYATTACK instructor training.

This course is trademarked, so you must enrol through the Les Mills website. The reason for this is that their classes can, BODYATTACK included, only be carried out at licensed-approved venues and by Les Mills certified instructors.

This point is supported by the job advert by David Lloyds, a Les Mills-approved venue, that we referred to above. As their job advertisement shows, they’re exclusively searching for a candidate with the relevant Les Mills qualification.

It is important to understand that without the relevant qualification, being able to teach a Les Mills course like BODYATTACK becomes impossible.

Enrolling on the BODYATTACK Course

les mills bodyattack courses 6

Enrolling on a Les Mills BODYATTACK course can be completed through Les Mills’ official website.

The course has the following sections that need to be completed:

  • 2 days to complete the initial training
  • 2 days to complete your advanced training within 12 months
  • Submission of video assessment

The training can be completed online, so there is no concern about travelling to complete the course in person.

how to become a bodyattack instructor 2

When you click on the company’s official website, you will see dates for you to complete the online training. Depending on the date, prices will vary. If you look at the dates for October and November, these classes range between £380 and £470.

If you click on the ‘More Info’ tab on the BODYATTACK enrolment page, you will get a breakdown of what the course will teach you across the two days of initial training.

les mills bodyattack certification 4

The course will teach you programming to understand how Les Mills sequences a class to successfully combine cardio and strength exercises in a BODYATTACK class.

The course is split into 5 elements to train you to the industry standard expected by Les Mills. These elements include choreography, coaching and performing to name a few.

Choreography, for example, is crucial to your success, as Les Mills is heavily sequenced. Understanding the steps of a BODYATTACK workout will help you optimise the fitness of members.

During your initial training, you will be required to complete the following segments across two days:

les mills bodyattack certification 3

Following the initial training, you will need to submit an assessment video to finish the course. This will contain evidence of you performing a track you’ve memorised that also demonstrates your knowledge of the course.

Tips to Prepare for the BODYATTACK Course

If you want to increase your chances of passing the course there are several things you can do:

  • Attend BODYATTACK classes in your area-this will give you an idea of what they entail and allow you to speak to the instructor for advice.
  • Visit the Les Mills website-they have plenty of clips of BODYATTACK exercises. It will help you understand what exercises are performed during the session.
  • Learn tracks for assessment video submission-a great tip to help you build confidence as you learn basic sequences and the steps it involves to successfully perform each step.

Go the Extra Mile With a Personal Training Qualification

les mills bodyattack certification 6

Earlier, you saw the David Lloyd job required a fitness professional with a level 2 and Les Mills qualification.

However, it is important to remember the industry has changed since the start of the 21st century. Where a level 2 qualification once increased your job prospects, holding a level 3 personal trainer qualification gives you a competitive edge over a gym instructor, today.

Depending on the gym you end up working at, they might need someone who can deliver more than BODYATTACK classes.

Many gyms look for employees with diverse skills that can help the gym function in different areas. For example, a new employer might want you to work as a personal trainer at their gym to deliver one-to-one training sessions and generate revenue for their business. This is something a level 2 gym instructor can’t provide.

As you can see below, employers often specify the desire for level 3 qualifications even when advertising for a fitness instructor:

become a bodyattack instructor job ad

With a level 3 PT qualification, job opportunities increase dramatically. You will have advanced anatomy, nutrition and leadership skills compared to a gym instructor.

Fortunately, you can save both time and money by completing your level 2 and 3 qualifications as part of a personal training diploma.

Step 2: Getting Insured as a BODYATTACK Instructor

les mills bodyattack courses 4

After you’ve completed your Les Mills BODYATTACK instructor training, you will want to secure insurance. This is to protect yourself from any claims or damages that occur whilst you’re working.

There are various kinds of insurance you can purchase to help you perform your duties with the right protection. The essential insurance policies you will need in this role are:

  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Professional Indemnity Insurance

Public Liability Insurance Explained

les mills body instructor training 2

Public liability insurance covers claims whilst you’re running a class; it covers injuries the public suffers or any damage to their property. Whilst you’re training a member, they could potentially fall and hurt their ankle. This insurance covers such a claim being made against you.

Alternatively, if a member of your group has their phone damaged due to your equipment falling on it, public liability will cover damages.

Professional Indemnity Insurance Explained

Professional indemnity insurance provides cover against any claims made regarding losses or damages that come as a result of negligence.

For example, if a client claimed that they got injured or became ill as a result of bad advice provided by yourself, they could claim damages.

A client could even claim for losses associated with the cost of your training if they feel your advice or guidance has not led to their desired results.

You might not think that this could happen to you, but even the most experienced fitness professionals are at risk of clients making such claims, so it’s always best to be covered.

Les Mills Instructor Policies

how to become a bodyattack instructor 3

Fortunately, Les Mills offers insurance with coverage for both public liability and professional indemnity. These policies are available from their website for fitness professionals carrying out Les Mills classes and cover a range of trademarked classes, along with non-Les Mills classes.

The snapshot below shows how much the insurance would cost based on the following factors:

  • You’re based in the UK
  • You’re a Les Mills Instructor
  • Policy starts on the 1st of February 2023
  • Delivering classes in the UK
  • Overseas extension in Europe

how to become a bodyattack instructor UK

This type of insurance will cost you £51.88 a year or just £4.15 per month and will get you up to £10 million coverage for both public liability and professional indemnity each.

Both of these jobs vary in the wages they offer, with factors such as company type and location influencing earning potential. The Fitness Directory position is a zero-hour contract with a minimum of £12.50 to £27.50 per being offered based on experience.

By contrast, the Northampton job is offering £9.90 per hour for gym instructors and £19.74 for a Group Exercise Instructor. However, this is based on demand from the gym itself.

  • Complete advanced training in your respective classes
  • Run more than two programs
  • Establish yourself as a tribe representative
  • Attend quarterly workshops

The criteria for each of these varies between countries, some, for example, require you to run several programs.

It is important to remember that you won’t see this job advertised publicly, this is because the recruitment is done through the Les Mills community. So, it is important to establish a strong reputation at Les Mills licensed venues if you’re hoping to become a presenter.

This will give you the chance to take on more responsibility which will positively impact your earning potential.

You could also consider becoming a Les Mills Ambassador. Similar to the presenter role, you will need to establish yourself as a positive figure within the Les Mills community.

It is a great opportunity if you want to help with educational content that the company supplies to its instructors. You will also be able to help with the company’s marketing strategies and visit Les Mills gyms globally.

If this position interests you, it will be beneficial for you to understand what each Les Mills class involves, so you can help the company create premium content.

Teach Other Group Fitness Classes

les mills body attack courses 2

In the industry, there are plenty of high-paying fitness jobs and gyms are always looking for instructors with specialised skills. That is why having CPD qualifications are useful.

For example, if you decide to study a Body Weight Training CPD course, you will learn how to plan and deliver different training sessions centred around the client’s abilities. This will be useful should you ever wish to create a HIIT class plans.

Unlike Les Mills courses, general fitness CPDs allow you to choreograph your fitness classes, giving you much more creative freedom over your role and allowing you to broaden the type of classes you can run.

Paired with your experience instructing BODYATTACK classes, which means you will already know how to manage groups of fitness enthusiasts, you can start to offer your own, independent classes that offer something new to attendees.

Our earlier example job description from North Northamptonshire Council is a prime example of how fitness professionals with more qualifications increase their earning potential. A group exercise instructor there earns £19.74 per hour compared to gym instructors who only earn £9.90 per hour.

So, if you want to build up your levels of expertise in a specific area of fitness, then a CPD course will be ideal for you.

Take On 1-to-1 Clients for Personal Training

body attack instructor training 2

Deciding to become a personal trainer is a wise investment for your career. Not only does it expand your knowledge, enabling you to write tailored programs for new clients but it also allows you to conduct health screenings and work with higher-risk clients.

One way to earn a healthy personal trainer salary is to offer your services to your existing class members.

Building on your reputation for BODYATTACK instructor training, you could use these classes for a recruitment drive.

Becoming a level 3 PT can help increase your salary as you will have a new market of clients to serve. For example, the average salary of a London gym instructor is £20,457.89, whereas the salary of a London personal trainer is £32,542.27

To start a level 3 personal trainer course, you will need to have achieved your gym instructor qualification as a prerequisite.  Thankfully, if you’re teaching BODYATTACK classes, you will already have this.

Being qualified in personal training provides you with the perfect opportunity to pursue a level 4 advanced personal trainer certification. This will help you develop your knowledge in focused areas such as Obesity, Diabetes and Lower Back Pain Management.

If you decide to improve your knowledge in one of these areas, you will be able to provide tailored services to support clients suffering from one of these conditions.

This will give you a competitive edge in the market and allow you to set prices for the specialised services you offer.

Pursue A Career As A Gym Manager

how to become instructor UK 2

After teaching BODYATTACK classes, you may wonder what options are available outside the Les Mills family. One option is you become a gym manager.

Suppose you’re passionate about teaching recruits to company standards and want to use your knowledge of group classes to create profitable timetables. In that case, this could be the next step to take in your career development.

Whilst you have a direct influence on people’s fitness through training and organisation, there will be a fair amount of administration work for you to complete such as maintaining financial records and health and safety compliance.

The first step you could take to become a gym manager is to become an assistant manager. This will be a great way for you to put the skills and expertise you’ve accumulated into practice.

Gyms hiring for this position will typically try to hire people who can guarantee the gym is adhering to health and safety policies, have strong knowledge of industry practices and possess adaptability and motivation to support the acting manager.

Establishing yourself as a successful assistant manager will also be a great role to include on your CV! You can find gym manager positions to apply for through online job websites such as Reed and Indeed and internal vacancies posted by your current employers.

Before You Go!

We hope these tips will provide you with the support you need to become a BODYATTACK instructor with Les Mills.

As part of the Les Mills brand, BODYPUMP is one of the most popular fitness classes in the UK. So it’s no wonder that so many fitness enthusiasts are wondering, ‘how do I become a BODYPUMP instructor?’

Below is the ultimate step-by-step guide to becoming a BODYPUMP instructor, including:

Before we jump in, kickstart your career as a BODYPUMP instructor today with OriGym’s Personal Trainer Diploma!

Enquire today, or download our free course prospectus for more information about the range of courses we offer.

Step 1- Get Qualified As A BodyPump Instructor

The first step to becoming a BODYPUMP instructor is to get qualified! There are 3 main qualifications you need, which we will outline below:

Get A Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification To Become A BODYPUMP Instructor

When wondering how to become a BODYPUMP instructor, you may be tempted to go straight into specific BODYPUMP instructor training.

However, if you want to become a BODYPUMP instructor, you need to first take a Level 2 gym instructor course.

This is because Level 2 is the minimum qualification required to teach fitness classes in the UK, and mandatory to be able to sign up to a BODYPUMP course.

For example, the job advert below for a BODYPUMP instructor in a Virgin Active gym states that at least a Level 2 qualification is required:

bodypump instructor training 7

As well as being necessary for a job as a BODYPUMP instructor, taking a Level 2 fitness instructing course will also help you feel more confident and prepared for your BODYPUMP instructor training course and for the role itself.

This is because as an entry-level course, a Level 2 gym instructor course will provide you with a solid foundation of knowledge to get started in the fitness industry.

However, this is only the case if you choose an Ofqual-regulated course such as OriGym’s, as this regulation acts as a ‘stamp of approval’ that the course has met the industry standards of education, teaching and assessment.

In other words, it guarantees that you will qualify with all the skills, knowledge and practical experience needed for a successful career as a fitness instructor.

An Ofqual-regulated Level 2 fitness instructor course will cover many topics that are also covered in a BODYPUMP course- which we will discuss in more detail next. These topics include:

  • Fitness class teaching techniques
  • How to motivate groups
  • How to design and deliver a fitness class
  • Health and safety
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • The business side of the fitness industry

Take A Les Mills BODYPUMP Instructor Course

Once you have your Level 2 qualification, you will then need to take a specific Les Mills BODYPUMP instructor course.

Since Les Mills is a trademarked brand, you will need this qualification to be able to teach under the ‘BODYPUMP’ name and to get a job as a BODYPUMP instructor.

It is therefore listed as a requirement for any BODYPUMP instructor role- such as the one above.

Even if a BODYPUMP qualification is not specified in a job advert, many general fitness or group exercise instructor roles will state that you will need the relevant qualification for the type of class you want to teach.

For example, the job advert for a group exercise instructor below states that a ‘relevant qualification’ is required ‘depending on class being delivered’.

So, if you want to teach BODYPUMP classes, you will therefore need a BODYPUMP qualification to be eligible for this job!

What Does A BODYPUMP Course Involve?

how to become a bodypump instructor 4

A BODYPUMP instructor training course is a 2-day course, typically run over a Saturday and Sunday, and you can take the course either in-person in a range of locations across the UK, or you can take the course completely online.

A BODYPUMP instructor course costs £425 and each course typically has 8-24 students.

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, group discussions, practical sessions and teaching practice.

As you will know, a BODYPUMP class consists of performing a range of fast-paced exercises to music using a barbell.

During the course, you will learn how to deliver an effective BODYPUMP class. According to the training section of the Les Mills website, you will cover the following topics:

  • Class structure and benefits
  • How to interpret, understand and learn choreography
  • How to perform and evaluate correct exercise technique
  • Why exercises are executed in a particular way
  • How to coach the class so that it is both safe and inspirational
  • How to create a memorable, fun and effective workout experience

As part of the course, you will also give 3 presentations and complete an assessment where you teach a practice class. You will need to receive a ‘pass’ from your trainers for all of these things, which are assessed on your performance in 3 main areas:

  • Choreography
  • Technique
  • Coaching

Plus, within 60 days of completing the course, you will then have to submit a video evaluation to Les Mills via email.

This is simply a video of you teaching a class, to show that you are teaching safely and effectively. It can be filmed using your phone camera, but it must be done in a licensed Les Mills facility.

How To Find And Enrol On A BODYPUMP Course

Now you know everything about what the course itself involves, you may now be wondering how to find one and get started!

You can enrol for BODYPUMP instructor training via the ‘Instructor’ page of the Les Mills website.

Then, select ‘BODYPUMP’ from the list of training programs.

becoming a bodypump instructor 5

This will then bring up the list of upcoming BODYPUMP courses in the UK and online, listing the dates, location and price.

Training sessions are typically held twice a month, in locations across the country.

So, if you are wondering how to become a BODYPUMP instructor in Loughborough, for example, you would then click on ‘More Info’ for more details about the course, such as the exact location and the schedule for each day.

You can then simply click ‘Buy Now’ and be guided through payment and enrollment!

What Happens After You Complete Your BODYPUMP Instructor Training?

how to become a bodypump instructor 2

Once you have completed your BODYPUMP course- including passing your video evaluation, you will then need to sign up for Les Mills ‘autoship’.

This is how you will get notified of new ‘releases’, which is the latest music and choreography you have to learn and teach as a BODYPUMP instructor.

These are released 4 times a year via the Les Mills App and Les Mills Instructor Portal online.

The release also includes education materials, teaching tips and marketing materials to promote your classes.

As well as giving you access to new releases, having autoship is also important as it is how you stay registered as an official Les Mills BODYPUMP instructor.

Les Mills autoship is paid for in quarterly instalments of around £30 each (so approximately £120 a year). This is therefore an additional cost you should factor in when becoming a BODYPUMP instructor.

However, some gyms and fitness centres may pay this for you, so make sure to check your contract to see if your employer covers the cost of your autoship.

Tips For Passing Les Mills BODYPUMP Instructor Training

becoming a bodypump instructor 2

The assessments may sound daunting, especially since a but don’t worry! Here are some top tips for passing your BODYPUMP course.

  • Go to lots of BODYPUMP classes yourself. Before you even think about becoming a BODYPUMP instructor, you should make sure that you are regularly attending classes yourself.

The more familiar you are with BODYPUMP classes, the easier you will find the training, and the better an instructor you will be!

Plus, by taking classes yourself and observing other teachers, you will learn what you like and dislike about certain teaching methods- which will then help you develop your own teaching style in the future. The best way to learn how to be a teacher is to be a student yourself!

  • Practice, practice, practice! Part of the assessment for your BODYPUMP instructor course involves memorising and teaching a very specific set routine. You will therefore need to be ready to put the time and commitment into learning and practising the choreography.

The better you know the routine, the more confident you will feel in your assessment. This confidence will help you deliver a better class and ultimately be more likely to impress your trainers!

A great tip for preparing for the assessment is to practice in front of a mirror, or film yourself. This will help you to spot and fix anything you are doing wrong!

  • Shadow an existing trainer. As we have mentioned, after you’ve completed your BODYPUMP course, you will then have to submit a video assessment.

To prepare for this, it is a good idea to shadow an existing teacher, so that you can learn from their teaching methods that will help you in your own teaching.

This is where attending classes before your training will be useful, as you could approach BODYPUMP teachers you already know, and ask if you can shadow them.

Step 2- Get Insured As A BODYPUMP Instructor

how to become a bodypump instructor 6

Once you are qualified, the next step to becoming a BODYPUMP instructor is to get insured.

Being insured is important as it gives you financial security if things go wrong by covering the legal costs in the event of a claim being made against you.

The main types of insurance you will need as a BODYPUMP instructor are:

  • Public liability insurance. This covers you in the event of a student making a claim against you for reasons such as injury or illness during your class.
  • Personal accident insurance. This covers you in the event of you becoming ill or injured whilst teaching a class.
  • Loss of earnings insurance. This covers you if you are ill or injured and cannot work for a long period of time.
  • Equipment insurance. This covers you in the case of your BODYPUMP equipment being stolen or damaged.

There are two main ways you can get BODYPUMP instructor insurance: either through Les Mills themselves, or through an external provider.

Les Mills insurance is specifically designed for self-employed Les Mills instructors, so this is a good option if you want to guarantee that you are getting the right cover you need.

Their policy provides £10,000,000 in public liability, product liability and professional indemnity. It also covers libel and slander, and legal defence costs.

The cost starts at £51.88 a month, but you can request a quote by filling out a form on their website.

bodypump instructor training 2

Alternatively, you can get insurance from another external insurance provider. For example, Insure4Sport offers a specific BODYPUMP instructor insurance policy, covering you for all the types of insurance we listed above.

Again, the exact cost will vary, depending on the level of coverage you want, so you should request a quote before you commit.

If you are employed as a BODYPUMP instructor by a gym on a contracted basis, your employer may provide some or all of your insurance for you. It is therefore worth checking this before you pay for insurance yourself!

Step 3- Find A Job As A BODYPUMP Instructor

how to become a bodypump instructor

Once you are qualified and insured, you can then start applying for BODYPUMP instructor jobs!

The most popular way to work as a BODYPUMP instructor is in a gym or fitness centre.

This is typically on a freelance/self-employed basis, meaning that you can work as an instructor for multiple different gyms.

However, you can also find a job on a contracted basis, where you are employed by one single gym or fitness centre.

As we have mentioned, since Les Mills is a trademarked brand, a licensing fee is required to teach classes under the BODYPUMP name. This is why working for a large-scale commercial gym is a popular option, as they will cover the cost of that licensing fee.

Some of the main commercial gyms in the UK that run BODYPUMP classes are:

  • JD Gyms
  • David Lloyd
  • 24/7 Fitness
  • Village Hotels & Leisure
  • Total Fitness

However, some independent or council-run gyms may also offer BODYPUMP classes. There is therefore a wide range of places you can choose from to work as a BODYPUMP instructor.

In fact, you can use the Les Mills ‘Find A Class’ tool to see just how many locations across the UK run BODYPUMP classes.

For example, you can see that there are 48 venues that run BODYPUMP classes in the Liverpool area alone!

bodypump instructor training 3

So, how do you find a job as a BODYPUMP instructor? The best way is to use job sites such as Indeed or Glassdoor, or more specific fitness job sites such as Leisure Jobs.

You may find a job specifically as a BODYPUMP instructor, such as the one below. In other words, you will be hired only to teach BODYPUMP classes.

bodypump instructor training 4

However, it is important to note that many gyms will not hire specially for just a ‘BODYPUMP instructor’. Instead, they will be looking for a general fitness class instructor who can teach multiple types of group exercise classes- including BODYPUMP.

To find these jobs, simpy search ‘Bodypump’ into the search engine of a jobs site such as Indeed.

For example, the job advert below is for a general group exercise instructor in a gym, but states that they are looking for an instructor who is able to teach Les Mills classes, including BODYPUMP.

As you can see, they have also specified that a Level 2 gym instructor qualification is required.

bodypump instructor training 5

This is why getting a Level 2 fitness instructor qualification as well as doing BODYPUMP instructor training is a necessity, as without it you wouldn’t be qualified for this job!

When wondering how to become a BODYPUMP instructor, you may also be wondering what the average salary is for the role in the UK.

We have a whole article here outlining Les Mills instructor salary here. But in short, the average BODYPUMP instructor salary is around £17-19 an hour.

Considering that the minimum wage in the UK is £9.50 an hour, this is a very lucrative career path!

However, the exact amount you earn as a BODYPUMP instructor depends on factors such as:

  • Location, i.e. you can expect to earn more as a BODYPUMP instructor in London compared to smaller towns.
  • The type of employment, i.e. whether you are self-employed or contracted by a gym.
  • Full or part-time.
  • Experience level
  • The type of gym you work for, i.e. high-end, commercial, independent.

Next, we’ll discuss some ways you can progress your career as a BODYPUMP instructor and increase your salary further!

Step 4- Progress Your Career After Becoming A BodyPump Instructor

becoming a bodypump instructor 3

Now that you know how to become a BODYPUMP instructor in the UK, you may be wondering what opportunities there are for progression.

Here are some of the best career progression routes you can take as a qualified BODYPUMP instructor:

Progress To Other Roles Within Les Mills

One of the easiest progression routes from being a BODYPUMP instructor is to move into a different role within the Les Mills brand.

Some possible Les Mills career progression routes are:

  • Get qualified to teach other Les Mills classes. Once you are a qualified BODYPUMP instructor, why not get qualified to teach other Les Mills classes too?

There are over 21 different Les Mills classes, ranging from BODYCOMBAT and BODYBALANCE to Les Mills Barre and even youth classes.

Qualifying to teach these classes works in the same way as becoming a BODYPUMP instructor- you will need both a Level 2 gym instructor and specific Les Mills qualification.

Again, you then enrol on all Les Mills training courses via the Les Mills instructor training section of their website.

  • Become a Les Mills presenter or assessor. A Les Mills presenter is someone who delivers the training and classes that provide instructors with the new material in the quarterly releases.

A Les Mills assessor on the other hand, is responsible for evaluating and marking the assessments of instructors on a training course.

This is a great career option if you want to pass on your knowledge and experience to the next generation of instructors!

Les Mills only hires internally for these roles, so you won’t see a job advert online for a Les Mills presenter or assessor. This is because you need to already be an experienced and skilled instructor to be selected for a promotion by Les Mills training management teams.

If you like the sound of this career path and want to increase your chances of being promoted, why not take a Fitness Teaching and Assessing course with OriGym?

Whilst this will qualify you to teach and assess fitness courses such as personal training, it will provide you with a strong foundation of skills and knowledge to become a Les Mills assessor too!

  • Become a Les Mills brand representative. A Les Mills brand rep is someone who acts as a representative for the brand, including promotion, marketing and recruiting.

Again, this role is only hired internally and you will be selected by Les Mills management once you have proved yourself as a skilled and experienced instructor.

Due to the fact that Les Mills hires for these positions internally, we cannot give a salary estimate for these roles. However, since you would be moving up the brand and progressing to a more advanced role, you can certainly expect a higher salary!

Teach Other Group Fitness Classes

how to become a bodypump instructor 5

If you enjoy teaching group fitness classes but want to expand your repertoire beyond Les Mills, then you could start to teach other types of fitness classes.

This could be either on a freelance basis, or in the gym that you already work at as a BODYPUMP instructor.

You could therefore start teaching other fitness classes at the same time as teaching BODYPUMP, allowing you to really maximise your earning potential.

You could teach other routine or dance-based classes, such as Zumba and aerobics, or you could expand your skill set to other types of classes such as HIIT or even boxercise- the possibilities are endless!

To teach fitness classes, you will need a Level 2 gym instructor qualification– which you should already have if you are working as a BODYPUMP instructor in a gym.

If you want to specialise in a particular type of group fitness class, here at OriGym, we offer a wide range of CPD courses that can help you do this, such as:

All of these courses take place over just one day, so they are a quick and easy way to expand your skill set!

The average salary of a fitness instructor in the UK is £13.87 an hour. Although this is technically less than the average BODYPUMP instructor salary, if you were to teach other fitness classes as well as BODYPUMP, then you can certainly expect to earn more than this!

Take On 1-to-1 Clients For Personal Training

how to become a bodypump instructor 7

If you want to progress from teaching groups, many BODYPUMP instructors progress to become a personal trainer and work with clients on an individual, 1-to-1 basis.

To do this, you will need to take a Level 3 personal training course.

In order to take this course, you will simply need a Level 2 gym instructor course- which you will already have if you are working as a BODYPUMP instructor!

Being a personal trainer involves creating bespoke training programmes to help clients meet their individual fitness goals.

This is a great career progression from being a BODYPUMP instructor, as you will already have a large potential clientbase. If you are already working in a gym,it would make it a lot easier for you to get clients as a personal trainer, as you could offer your services to regular students of your class, or simply existing members of the gym.

For example, once you have gained some experience working as a BODYPUMP instructor in a gym, you could start to take on individual clients at the same time.

Plus, teaching a regular BODYPUMP class is also a great marketing opportunity, as you could talk about your personal training services at the start and end of your class!

You could then eventually do personal training full time, or even start your own personal training business!

The average salary of a personal trainer in the UK is £21.60 an hour, which is a considerable increase from the average Les Mills instructor salary.

This is mainly because as a personal trainer, you can set your own rates for charging individual clients, rather than being limited to a set hourly wage from a gym.

Compared to being a BODYPUMP instructor, there is also a lot more scope to increase your earnings even more by specialising in a personal training niche.

For example, you could specialise in training a particular demographic or clients with certain health considerations, such as training pregnant clients.

By specialising in a particular area of fitness, you can increase your rates, since you are offering a more specialised service.

Another good way to increase your salary as a personal trainer is to take further qualifications. For example, you could take a Level 4 sports nutrition course so that you are qualified to give nutrition advice to your clients.

Again, this means that you can increase your rates, since you now offer a more comprehensive service to your clients. Plus, it will open up a wider range of potential clients, since you can now take on people wanting nutritional advice as well as an exercise program!

Work Your Way Up To Become A Gym Manager

becoming a bodypump instructor

If you have been working as a BODYPUMP instructor in a gym for a while, another great career progression option is to become a gym manager.

But in summary, a gym manager is essentially responsible for the overall running and managing of a gym or fitness centre.

There are no set qualifications required to become a gym manager, but the more qualified and experienced you are, the better!

Whilst they can be hired externally, most gym manager roles are hired internally. So, once you have gained experience as a BODYPUMP instructor or even a personal trainer in a gym, you would therefore be at an advantage if a management position opened up within that gym.

Before You Go!

So, if you were wondering, ‘how do I become a BODYPUMP instructor?’, we hope that you now have all you need to know to get started!
