9 Key Tips On Teaching Yoga To Those With Special Needs

special needs yoga class

Any class member with additional needs may require some alterations to your usual yoga class plan, which is why it could be a good idea to have classes dedicated to making yoga a more enjoyable experience for students that require some extra attention.

Below, we have some tips and suggestions on yoga for special needs students, so you can plan an effective session.

#1 – Consider Your Music Choices In A Special Needs Yoga Class

yoga for special needs

Depending on the disabilities that your class has, it might be helpful for you to avoid using music or at least lower the volume.

For example, some people who are on the autism spectrum (ASD) may be sensitive to sounds. Auditory sensitivities are extremely common among children and adults with autism, and so creating classes that are quiet and don’t have any sudden sounds could really benefit their overall experience.

If your students feel safe in the knowledge that they can have their yoga class without fear of any sudden noises or unexpected sounds, they could actually enjoy the class and not feel worried.

However, this isn’t the case for every person with a disability. In fact, in some cases it could be beneficial to include certain kinds of yoga music.

It would be incredibly important to get some knowledge of the disability from each member of your class to ensure that you aren’t alienating anybody. This would then mean you can divide the class into 2.

yoga special needs students

One could be for those who would prefer silence throughout the class, and some who enjoy calming music to accompany the practice.

In fact, there is such a thing as music therapy for individuals with ASD. You could ask each individual in the class (or their guardian if their disability permits them to make their decisions) if they enjoy certain music.

You could test it out on groups of clientele that have the same taste. For example, if you have 50% of people who prefer less stimulating atmospheres, then you can have a safe-space yoga class.

teaching yoga to special needs students

On the other hand, you may see some similarities between people who would enjoy a gentle tone in the background of their class.

You could then hold another class that permits this. Before you do this though, it would be a good idea to share the playlist that you intend to play before the class. This would give the students time to listen to it prior and know what to expect.

Sometimes sound can be alarming to those with particular disabilities due to the nature of the unexpectedness of the sound. However, if it is something they’re able to become familiar with prior to the class, it could reduce any element of surprise and increase their overall enjoyment.

#2 – Some Special Needs May Be Physical As Well As Mental

how to teach special needs yoga

When teaching yoga to special needs students, you need to keep in mind that ‘disability’ is a huge blanket term for many different disabilities, and while some may be mental, others may be physical.

This is why prior to onboarding students, you should get a full fitness consultation done, which will help you to understand their disability and what assistance they may need to enjoy their class to the full potential.

Some disabilities will need more assistance than others, for example, some students that have disabilities such as the following may need more physical and practical assistance:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Amputations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Arthritis

These can have various ranges of extremity, so finding out what kind of assistance they might need and also the consent to provide any hands on assistance is important.

This way, you can teach variations of yoga poses to suit those who may be in a wheelchair or who have limited range of motion.

special needs and yoga

This again reinforces the importance of not alienating your clients, it is vital that you make the classes for their abilities. On the other hand, there might be disabilities that make it difficult more so on the mental side of things.

This means that, while their body may be completely able, their mind could struggle to keep up with particular poses or they could be easily triggered by things in the studio. This could include disabilities such as:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger’s Syndrome)
  • ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • NVLD (Non-verbal learning disorder)

These can even sometimes be classified as invisible disabilities as, because the spectrum is so wide, there are hugely varied severities.

With that in mind, the bottom line is to ensure you are well equipped to deal with the disability of your students. If you don’t feel equipped or you are not able to cater for particular severities then you may have to refer the student to a more well equipped yoga teacher.

#3 – Consider Changing Your Class Size For Special Needs Students

yoga for students with special needs

Class sizes matter when it comes to teaching yoga for special needs students. Larger classes can become overwhelming for those with certain disabilities.

For example, people who struggle with social interaction may find larger classes intimidating. By making classes smaller but more frequent, you can avoid any losses and focus on making the class an enjoyable experience.

Up to 8 people could be a good sized class, depending on the severity and type of disability that they have. If you’re working with students that have more severe disabilities than it is important that you have the capacity to attend to them all individually.

This will help to ensure that you have what it takes to concentrate on making the class enjoyable and more importantly safe.

leading yoga for special needs

Some disabilities are more susceptible to struggling in social situations than others, for instance things like:

  • Asperger’s syndrome (Autism spectrum disorder)
  • ADHD
  • Deafness
  • Blindness

These are the kinds of disabilities that make general communication more difficult, so thinking about the class size if you have students with disabilities such as the aforementioned and alike you should consider limiting the numbers.

#4 – Make Your Classes Fun For Special Needs Students

lead special needs yoga

You really want to make sure that your classes are fun, they should be a place for students with or without disabilities to feel as though they’re taking a break from reality and enjoying themselves.

So what are some ways you can inject some fun into your yoga classes?

First, find out what your class actually enjoys. Do they enjoy certain types of music or themes? If they do, choosing yoga class themes based on what they collectively enjoy could make it a much more enjoyable experience.

For example, people with the following disorders / disabilities can often show tendencies of hyperfixation:

  • Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders

With that in mind, there are some particular themes that they may seem more passionate about. If you can reach a common ground among your class on changing themes week on week, based on the passions of each class member, you could create a comfortable and enjoyable environment.

Aside from that, you could incorporate social events for your classes and begin creating a team of like-minded yoga lovers that can become friends and gain some sociability from your yoga classes.

#5 – Consider Extra Safety Precautions For Your Special Needs Students

yoga with special needs students

Safety precautions are something that should be considered in yoga classes for every ability, but depending on the disability that your student has, some may need extra precautionary measures than others.

For example, if you have any students that struggle with their balance more than what would be typical of an able bodied student, it would be a good idea to invest into things like:

  • Thicker yoga mats
  • Wall fixtures to hold onto
  • Extra yoga equipment such as blocks and straps to assist with poses.

These are simple upgrades that can help to keep your students that bit safer in your care.

Aside from the equipment, the general tempo of your yoga class might need to be slowed down to ensure any movements aren’t going to impose any risk of injury.

yoga teaching for special needs students

The good thing is that yoga is typically performed slowly regardless, so think more about the type of yoga style that you’re going to teach.

Often, the go-to is Hatha yoga (simply because of its slower, more gentle nature) and there are plenty of variations to choose from when it comes to simplifying the poses.

You should also consider the students who are in wheelchairs. You could take some guidance from chair yoga classes to adapt your poses to fit people who only have movement capabilities within their upper body.

Consider the disability then decide on the safety precautions you need to implement since they can vary dramatically.

#6 – Do Your Research On The Disabilities Your Students Have

being a special needs yoga teacher

We briefly mentioned earlier the importance of researching the disability that your student has, this is crucial in ensuring that you can run a class that is as enjoyable and inclusive as possible.

While before offering the classes at all you should do some research into the most common disabilities, this doesn’t mean that you should consider your research done.

You should always keep learning about how yoga can benefit those with disabilities and how to make your practice as effective as possible.

Everytime you get an inquiry from a new class member, ask about their disability. The more detail that you can get from them or their guardian the better, try to find out things such as:

  • Triggers
  • Likes and dislikes
  • Disability severity
  • Age

These will help you to teach special needs yoga that will be enjoyable and inclusive without running the risk of alienating any students regardless of their disability.

#7 – Implement A Consistent Structure For Special Needs Yoga Classes

yoga poses for special needs children

Finally, one last thing that is important when it comes to certain disabilities is the structure of it all.

With some learning disabilities, structure and routine is incredibly important, particularly for those with ASD. People who have autism spectrum disorder can have the tendency to feel more comfortable with routines and structure.

This would mean keeping your classes at the same time each week. Using similar (at least) routines each week would be an ideal way of not shocking any participants.

For example, if you do want to introduce new poses or styles of yoga, it is a good idea to introduce it gradually so that you don’t alarm any students with unexpected changes.

Even if you decide on introducing one new pose every week, soon after you could have a whole new routine that has been implemented without triggering anybody.

3 Skills You Should Prioritise When Teaching Yoga To Special Needs Students

skills for teaching special needs yoga

There are some skills that matter more whether you’re teaching yoga to children with special needs, or adults. With that being said, here are three top skills to prioritise when teaching yoga to special needs students.

Exercise Patience When Leading Special Needs Yoga Classes

special needs yoga classes

Patience is something that is absolutely necessary in a special needs yoga class. Some things may take longer to do, like setting up your class or instructing students.

For some people, depending on the severity of their disability, it may be harder for them to understand particular instructions.

Things like using the right visual yoga cues could be more beneficial for your students and having the patience to understand that people learn at different speeds is vital.

Planning & Organisation Are Essential Skills For Teaching Yoga To Special Needs Children

become a special needs yoga teacher

We have reiterated the importance of routines when regarding specific disabilities, and while this isn’t all people, everyone will appreciate the smooth running of a class.

This is because it becomes much easier for them to know what to expect, there are no sudden changes which could trigger them and thus, makes for a better atmosphere overall.

Planning and organisation are also crucial for you as the instructor. You need to be thinking ahead of potential triggers, researching each class member’s disability and having a well-thought-out plan that will make for an enjoyable experience for all class members regardless of their disability.

Good Communication Is Key In Any Yoga Class For Special Needs Students

yoga for special needs teacher training

Communication skills are important in many different walks of life, but when you’re teaching a class that requires more care you may need to think about this some more.

For example, if you may typically raise your voice if you’re not heard at the back of the class this may not be appropriate for those who find shouting triggering. Instead, you could still communicate effectively by moving around the class and speaking in a regular tone.

The point is that you should be thinking before you speak and not to expect that students can adapt as easily as this may not always be the case.

How To Get Started Teaching Yoga To Those With Special Needs

leading yoga classes for special needs

So, is there special needs yoga teacher training or can you create a class for varied abilities with any yoga training?

First, you will need a Level 3 in Yoga Teaching to teach yoga to any ability. This is typically a minimum of 200 hrs, but the more the better, especially if you lack experience before training.

It is good to check prior to applying for roles if you need a specific qualification as this can be subjective job to job.

However, one thing you may need when dealing with children or disabled people of any age is a DBS clearance certificate.

yoga classes for special needs

You can apply for this on the UK government website here. It is simple and having this under your belt is likely to make you a much more preferable and prepared candidate compared to others who don’t.

We would recommend looking for yoga for special needs teacher training if the place of work you want to work requires it but, the standard 200 hrs or more is likely to be accepted.

The bottom line is that you should always check with the job you’re applying for, it can vary dramatically so ensuring you either gain further qualifications like a Level 4 in Advanced Yoga Instructing, or specific training for disabilities.

Whether you’re starting classes for children or adults with disabilities, hopefully you feel more confident in starting to build a class that is a safe space.

How to Price Personal Training Using a Package Structure

how much to charge as a personal trainer

One of the most effective ways to price your services is by creating personal trainer packages for your clients.

Compared to selling your personal training services as individual sessions, for example £30 per session, or in ‘blocks of sessions’, for example £200 for 8 sessions, the package pricing structure will not only help you to get clients on board, but retain them for the long haul too.

The main thing that makes rolling contract packages the best option is the fact that you’re not putting an end date on your relationship with the client. Once you have set up the direct debit, you have an on-going commitment and there is no official end date on the sessions or goals that you and your clients will set.

The selling process is the most difficult part of getting clients, so why make yourself do it more than once? If you sell ‘X’ amount of sessions in a block, you will have to start the re-selling process all over again when these run out.

how much should i charge as a personal trainer

This gives too much leverage for clients to leave and not re-buy sessions, if it is on a rolling contract, the chances of your client retention staying high is much more probable.

So how can you put one of these packages together? The good news is that even if you’re a complete newbie to running a personal training business, it is pretty simple.

Your package should be one set price that your client pays every month, and this should cover all of the services available to them. Think of it as simplifying lots of smaller charges and one-off fees, and combining them into one regular monthly payment.

This not only makes it easier for you as the PT and business owner but your clients too. It means that you can better forecast exactly how much you can make as a personal trainer, and for the client, there are no hidden extras, they know exactly how much they need to pay and when.

Packages are typically based on a rolling contract, meaning you will choose a price to be billed monthly and you can then set up a direct debit that is to be taken from clients on the same day of every month, like this PT company below does:

personal training average cost

As you can see, they have their price per month and list the factors that counter the £200+ price mark. This is important, you need to justify your price bracket to potential clients by telling them what will be included in the package.

This is going to be what sells the package, don’t assume that people are already aware of the extras that come along with a PT package, detail everything the more you offer the better so let the client know what they’ll be getting.

Now that you know how and why to use this package structure, the next step is determining the value of your services so that you can actually price the package, and decide how much to charge.

After becoming a personal trainer, you’ll need to learn about the main factors that affect how much to charge, including your experience, competitor analysis and location.

We’ll discuss these in the next section.

8 Key Factors That Can Affect How Much You Charge As A Personal Trainer

The personal training average cost is determined by a number of factors, here we have 8 things that will help you to decide how much you should charge your clients.

#1 What Are The Rates Of Your Competitors?

how much personal training cost

The same goes for starting a business within any industry, you should always begin with some competitor analysis to find out what kind of level you’re going to be competing against.

This isn’t just to assess what you’re up against, but also to set your prices properly and in line with what your clients will expect. So, where do you begin?

Start by looking at the competitors that are closest to you in terms of location, you can do this by utilising the likes of GoogleMyBusiness to find the most relevant competitors. For example, take a look at these results on GMB when you search for personal trainers near me:

personal training cost per hour

You can see where we have highlighted the area of red drop pins that indicate nearby personal training companies. These are going to be the competitors closest to you and thus, the most relevant ones to be looking at price wise.

You can then start to look through these competitors one by one, taking a look at their price brackets and what you get within their package.

You should then start to think about how you can make your services better, while still offering a competitive price mark. Don’t forget to be assessing how much experience you have in comparison to these competitors, just because they are charging a particular price in your area this doesn’t immediately make you valued at the same.

They may have a higher level of experience or advanced qualifications that you haven’t achieved just yet, particularly if you’re new to the industry so keep this in mind when weighing up your value compared to theirs.

For some more helpful articles on how to run your business as a personal trainer, head over to these articles below:

#2 Whereabouts In The Country Do You Work?

personal training cost

Personal training cost per hour changes dramatically from city to city within the UK, so location like we just briefly mentioned is a huge variable in determining how much you can charge.

If you work in the capital, you can of course expect to charge more per session since the clientele there will be prepared to pay higher than average prices. This all aligns with what the cost of living in London looks like.

The average wage is higher to align with the higher cost of living so you as an employee within the capital should have your prices reflect this too. For example, we looked at some statistics regarding the income for the UK’s major cities, with London being the highest earning city, you can see a visualisation of this below:

how much should personal training cost

It is important that you take this into consideration when thinking about how much to charge, check out what your clients are likely to be earning to ensure that you’re creating a fair price bracket.

When it comes to the higher earning cities like London, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your take home net profit will be more than others, it just means that you’re still getting a fair cut after you have accounted for your expenditures.

For example, let’s take a look at two personal trainers, one from within London and one outside of the capital. Below, you can see a personal trainer who operates in London, their membership plans and how much their most affordable package costs:

personal training session cost

personal training cost per session

For two sessions a week, £616.00 works out at £77 a session. This is a huge price tag, just about double of the standard price around the UK outside of London, but, this is why location is such a huge factor when it comes to personal training cost.

So you can see how drastic the difference is, you can see below an example of a personal trainer in Chester that offers three different packages too, at a much lower price.

how much are personal trainers

This second example goes to show that with both personal trainers having extensive experience and educational background, prices can vary dramatically depending on the location within the UK.

The reason behind this sharp increase in price is the fact that it simply costs more to rent spaces in London, the wage is higher should you want to hire other PT’s within your studio and of course, the cost of living is higher meaning you’ll need more net profit than PT’s outside the capital city to get by.

This is why the question of how much should personal training cost is so broad since something like location can have an impact with a difference of hundreds of pounds so keep this in mind when deciding where you want to operate from.

#3 What Facility Do You Work in?

how much is a pt

Besides the location of your gym, what kind of facility or gym you work in also has a huge impact.

For example, people who want to become a personal trainer in Virgin Active will have different rates from those who work for Puregym for instance.

This is simply because the reputations behind both of these brands are different. PureGym is marketed as a budget-friendly gym and while popular, clients aren’t expecting a luxury experience or a big price tag.

For example here is a comparison between some private gyms and commercial gyms and you can see the amount the cost can change depending on their status in the industry:

cost of a personal trainer uk

Even if the price starts low, there is more chance of you being able to raise your prices easily if you work for more prestigious commercial gyms like Virgin Active or David Lloyds –  you’re able to take advantage of these reputable brands and can increase your prices to reflect their reputation from the get-go.

This also goes for the likes of memberships. Using the same example of Puregym and Virgin Active, the membership options for both have a huge difference in price brackets, PureGym has a price mark starting at £13.99 up to £26.99 the difference being based on the location on the gym.

This is still incredibly affordable, compared to the likes of Virgin Active where a monthly membership fee can set you back £179.00.

personal trainer cost per hour

This is why what kind of facility you decide to work at is important because the structures for PT’s gym to gym can vary dramatically, as will the demographic of the clients you train, which directly impacts your pricing structure.

Not only that, but you may find that you don’t have the freedom to choose your own rates for certain gyms, so you must first decide if you want to be a hired PT or a freelance PT since this will truly give you the freedom to choose your own personal training cost per session.

The bottom line is that the facility that you work in could have the final say in what you’re able to charge, similarly, you should also come to terms with the fact that you may need to price your sessions more modestly based on your place of work.

#4 Are You Appropriately Covering Your Expenses?

how much are pt sessions

Another thing that can impact the cost of a personal trainer in the UK is the expenses that come along with running a business.

As a personal trainer, you need to ensure that you are making a profit and covering all of your expenses appropriately. Some of these outgoings would include the following:

  • Gym rental costs
  • Labour time
  • Personal training insurance
  • Softwares (e.g Trainersize, money management etc.)
  • Uniform
  • Equipment
  • Travel costs

These are the expenses that you should expect as a minimum, running a business isn’t easy, but the payback from it is well worth the effort that goes in.

These expenses are what determine how much personal trainers cost, the first priority should be at the very least breaking and then deciding how much a profit you want to make either on an hourly or monthly basis.

Remember that location contributes to these expenses too, the likes of travel costs, rental costs and labour time in particular will be heavily impacted by location so keep this in mind when deciding what you’re going to charge.

#5 What Additional Qualifications Do You Hold?

how much personal trainers cost

Something else that will contribute to the decision-making of how to price personal training sessions is the qualifications that you have behind you.

This is because it relates to your level of expertise and the services you can offer within your packages. For example, if you have a level 3 diploma in personal training, you are only allowed to offer personal training and some nutritional advice.

However, if you have more qualifications, perhaps an actual level 4 qualification in advanced sports nutrition, you would be able to offer nutrition coaching services as a premium option for clients.

This doesn’t have to be a separate service altogether though, any extra qualifications allow you to charge more for your PT sessions since they’re better informed and allow you to provide a more comprehensive service.

For example, below you can see a personal trainer who lists out their experience and qualifications:

how much should a beginner personal trainer charge

This is a good way to be transparent about what you have learned and ultimately justifies your price point, particularly if it is higher than the average in your area.

#6 What Package Has The Client Purchased?

how much should a personal trainer charge per hour

We mentioned earlier the importance of choosing a package strategy, but what are the things that can actually affect whether the price of the package goes up or down?

It is simply what is included in the Personal Trainer package, how many sessions and the guidance that comes along with it. The reason the amount of sessions is the determining factor for pricing your packages is because they should be a fraction cheaper than if they were to be bought alone.

For example, if you charge £35 a session as standard, the package that you’re trying to sell wouldn’t be one worth buying if the monthly price amounts to more than buying them individually, especially if there are no extras.

The point of the package is to ensure that you’re retaining clients for the long haul on a direct debit, not so you can make huge extras in terms of income so be sure to keep this in mind when pricing your sessions individually and on a package basis.

So this is clear, here is an example of how you would structure a package and how this will ultimately determine your pricing for personal training sessions.

1 session = £35

Package 1 = £250 billed monthly

– Includes 2 x sessions a week (8 per month)

– Nutritional Guidance

– 5 days a week support

Package 2 = £385 billed monthly

– Includes 3 x sessions a week (12 per month)

– Nutritional Guidance

– 5 days a week support

As you can see, there is a saving within both packages, with the biggest saving being on the more expensive package. You need to create a personal training pricing structure that is going to push an incentive on the packages that you want to sell the most of so remember this when designing them.

#7 What’s Your USP?

what is a good price for personal training

By finding your USP or PT niche, how much to charge for personal training sessions becomes a little clearer since you’re narrowing down the research sphere.

With generic personal trainers being easy to find, you need to make yourself stand out against the rest. Why should a client pay you extra for your specified services in comparison to a PT who says they have it all with a smaller personal training price per session?

First, finalise your unique selling point, are you interested in one particular area of fitness that could drive your business? Some popular USP’s include areas of fitness such as:

  • Pre / post-natal
  • Diabetes management
  • Obesity management
  • Personal training for seniors

These are all niches and areas of fitness that can separate you from any local competition so it is always a good idea to find what you really care about in terms of fitness, finalise your niche, and use this as a way to gauge a fair price point.

#8 How Much Personal Training Experience Do You Have?

how to price personal training

Finally, another factor that can affect how much to charge as a personal trainer is your experience. This is aside from your experience in terms of education, instead think about the hands-on work you have done as a personal trainer.

The longer you have been working as a PT, the higher you can justify your (UK) personal trainer cost. You may see that often, in any industry, the way professionals gain a level of trust is by disclosing their years of experience.

For example, take a look at this PT below who does this:

personal trainer pricing template

This immediately provides you with some authority within the industry, by sharing how much experience you have, you’re telling potential clients that you have had happy clients and have been able to maintain this career.

This says alot about your success and how well you have done as a personal trainer so if you have the experience, let it be known. If you don’t have the experience, don’t worry, we will talk about how much should a beginner personal trainer charge next.

How Much Should You Charge As A Personal Trainer?

gym personal trainer cost

As a personal trainer, you may be wondering where do you begin with your pricing strategies?

While all of the factors above may not concern you, some of them are going to heavily impact how much you can charge. Factors such as:

  • Location
  • Qualifications
  • (Lack of) Experience

These factors matter the most, particularly the fact that you have no experience. Nonetheless, with the correct education behind you, you are still able to price your PT sessions fairly, so don’t undersell your services.

So, how much to charge as a personal trainer is heavily influenced by your location. Most PTs will start around the £30 mark, if you’re in the capital city this could be a little more but as standard start at around this number.

You can run offers as you begin and even trial sessions to give people an idea of what they can expect from your sessions. This is a good way to show people that even if you’re yet to build the experience, you can still offer great sessions that are worth paying for.

Before You Go…

So, the answer to how much should I charge as a personal trainer? Is probably more complex than you initially thought, but we hope you have found clarity in how you can begin determining your price bracket through these aforementioned factors.

How Satisfied Are Personal Trainers With Their Job?

So, how happy are personal trainers within their jobs? The only way we could find out as close to the truth to this is by doing some extensive research into PT job satisfaction specifically which is exactly what we have done.

First, we looked at the statistical side of things and due to personal training being such a successful industry, and there was indeed research performed on real life subjects to determine how happy they are within their jobs.

For example, this research gives an indication as to why the job satisfaction is high within the personal training industry specifically, take a look at this excerpt below explaining this well:

pt job satisfaction

We have highlighted some of the key indicators within this section, specifically those that are directly related to those who become personal trainers are happy in their jobs. This includes things such as:

  • Salary: Due to the fact that training is somewhat of a luxury for clients, the personal trainer salaries are typically much higher than many working class job roles, particularly if you’re freelance. This is because in order to hire a personal trainer, you would have a higher disposable income and thus, would be able to afford hourly PT rates of approximately £30 – £60+ an hour for X amount of times a week.
  • Possibility of growth: Like we mentioned, being freelance can be hugely beneficial for your salary and thus similarly, for growth within your career. It allows for uncapped earning potential and uncapped growth.
  • Working conditions: Working conditions as a personal trainer can be determined by what you want, making it an attractive prospect within the career. You can choose if you want to be a part of a commercial gym with a brand behind you, a private gym local to you or a freelancer who can bounce between all options. The point is the working conditions promote work freedom which has a hugely positive impact on job satisfaction.
  • Personal life: If you’re your own boss, you can create your own work-life balance and this can be another factor in the industry that people find so satisfying.

You may notice that all of these things often boil down to the freedom that comes with a career as a personal trainer and the earning potential too. While there are of course some other contributing factors, these are the most prominent within research.

Measuring Job Satisfaction for Employed PT’s

Aside from the general research about how happy PT’s are, there are some sources that provide us with useful information too, like popular job boards such as Glassdoor. This can provide insight into real testimonials surrounding job satisfaction for personal trainers, you can find a number of things regarding the job experience like these that we have highlighted below:

job satisfaction for personal trainers

Among the things like salaries and interview questions, there are insightful ratings that can help you understand the general job satisfaction along the sector, as well as within particularly fitness companies.

For example take a look at the review section below:

job satisfaction rates for personal trainers

You’re able to refine particular searches, including the challenges that may arise and the favourite parts of the job too. We have highlighted two of the many reviews that are on Glassdoor and you may notice how they align with the aforementioned scholarly research on PT job satisfaction too.

Things like good work / life balance and career progression are both things that are highlighted often within reviews. There are clearly more than enough indications that the current industry of personal training are indeed happy with their jobs, but what makes it more reliable is the consistency of the same aligning factors that are mentioned.

With that in mind, you might want to understand some more on how this level of satisfaction and the things that make personal training different from other industries when it comes to job satisfaction.

How Does Job Satisfaction For Personal Trainers Compare To Other Jobs?

job satisfaction rates for a personal trainer

There are some statistics out there that will illustrate the level of job satisfaction you can expect as a PT compared to other industries and careers.

Following some research, we found one data set in particular that compared over 454 job roles in terms of their average pay, their meaningfulness and their job satisfaction.

In this data set, you can see these variables from left to right in that order below for what kind of response was received for the career of a personal trainer, alongside some other comparing careers:

how happy are personal trainers

As you can see where we have highlighted, fitness trainers have a job satisfaction rate of 71%, while this is pretty high within its own right, there are some comparisons that may surprise you.

For example, take a look at the similarities between job satisfaction between a personal trainer and the likes of physical therapists and even first line workers.

The reason you should take notice of these similarities is because while some of these jobs may require degrees and years of education, you can still get the same job satisfaction that you hope for or more with just a vocational PT course.

Data sets such as this are crowdsourced, meaning that this is based on people who are a part of all of these industries giving you an accurate representation of how happy PTs truly are.

Let’s find out what it is specifically that makes personal training an enjoyable career in case you have any doubt about what your future will look like as a PT.

Before we get straight into the things you can look forward to as a PT, here are some helpful resources on the exicting direction your career can take:

What Makes Personal Training A Satisfying Job? 7 Reasons to Join the Industry

#1 There is Uncapped Earning Potential as a Freelance PT

are personal trainers happy in their job

Aside from the job satisfaction in terms of the enjoyment that comes with being a personal trainer, there is of course the financial satisfaction.

As a freelance personal trainer in particular, the possibility to keep progressing and earning more has no limit. You’re able to set your own rates, work where you want to work, manage all expenses yourself and climb the ladder as time goes on.

Your personal trainer salary is managed solely by you if you’re freelance, and even if you decide to take a hired role, there is still a healthy amount of money to be made no matter the route you take.

This is due to the fact that there are so many different routes into the personal training industry and all of them, more often than not, pay above the national wage should you have the correct qualifications behind you.

You don’t have to simply take our word for it though, for example, take a look at this job advertisement from Virgin Active for a personal training role at one of their gyms:

are personal trainers happy in their jobs

This isn’t just Virgin Active either, it is most commercial gyms across the board in the UK. So whether you want to work in a private gym, open your own gym or utilise the reputation of a commercial gym to boost your business your earnings will be able to soar.

#2 You can Consistently Be Motivated by Clients’ Achievements

do personal trainers enjoy their job

As you now know, the sociable aspect of personal training can really help to boost the overall job satisfaction, but one aspect between you and the client that is unique to personal training is the consistent achievements your clients reach.

As a PT, it would be hard to fall short of motivation when you are seeing results in your own clients each and every day. You’re consistently gaining new clients, seeing them grow and setting new goals.

This is something that many people in other industries will never experience. You may often see testimonials from personal trainers who say they love their job because they’re able to help others.

For example, take a look below at this excerpt from a PT’s blog below sharing why she became a PT:

do personal trainers enjoy their jobs

As you can see, not only are they satisfied with their job, but something that crops up again and again is the desire to help others achieve.

This sense of accomplishment isn’t just for the client, it is for you as the instructor too. You get recognition for the hard work that you have put in to get to where you are in your career every time a client reaches a new milestone – this is what really increases the job satisfaction for personal trainers.

#3 Personal Training is A Sociable Activity

do personal trainers enjoy their job uk

One of the many reasons why people join the fitness industry is due to the nature of your day-to-day job responsibilities. It is a job in which no two days are the same since you’re consistently encountering new people and challenges.

It is an extremely sociable job, you are in a client facing role and as a PT, it is likely that you have the traits to make for a sociable trainer and would enjoy this kind of day to day life. You’re able to pick your clients and ensure that you’re not dealing with people who you don’t want to train.

You can get to know all of your clients, as you should, so their achievements are your achievements and meeting milestones becomes not just a win for you business, but for you personally as well. Aside from the B2C (business-to-consumer) relationship that you will naturally build, there are some other sociable aspects that make for a satisfying job prospect.

The main one being the ‘team’ aspect of personal training. As a PT, you’re creating a community by gathering your clients and creating a group of people with one common ground – to feel better. This might mean getting stronger, losing weight, managing medical conditions, no matter what it is the end goal is improvement.

With this common motive, you can push the sociable aspect so much more. You can create group challenges, competitions and contact groups where everyone can share their achievements and you can celebrate them as well.

This sense of community is certainly a contributing factor to overall personal trainer job satisfaction, it is unlike most other roles and the unique structure of it all makes getting up and going to work in the morning easier than it ever was before!

#4 Personal Trainers Have Career Freedom

do personal trainers enjoy being a PT

Something else that makes personal training a fulfilling and satisfying job prospect is the freedom that comes along with it. Since you’re able to be your own boss, you can have complete freedom over your business.

Whether it is how much you want to earn, or your general schedule that you want to have more control over, you can take charge of any of these things as a personal trainer.

You even have the ability to become a travelling personal trainer should you want to take your services outside of the UK. This level of freedom allows for you to trial and error what works for you, you can test out new PT niches and come to terms with what you’re passionate about.

For example, if something doesn’t work out for you, you have the career freedom to make adjustments and changes so you can keep going forward and not have to go through the process of changing jobs or companies.

This kind of freedom can help combat any work stress, for example, take a look at these top 10 reasons for workplace stress based on research surrounding workplace health.

do personal trainers enjoy being a PT

As you can see, number two on the list is a lack of control. This is something that you wouldn’t have to worry about as a personal trainer, since you could be your own boss and take full control of everything you need to be successful.

#5 There is Plenty of Room for Progression as a PT

is personal training an enjoyable job

We have mentioned how personal training is a career that has unlimited potential, but in what ways can PT’s progress that makes it such an enjoyable career?

Once you have become a personal trainer, you could branch out into some other areas of fitness, such as:

  • Yoga teaching
  • Gym manager
  • Gym owner
  • Exercise referral PT
  • Fitness tutor
  • Online personal training

There are tons of different ways to keep progressing your career as a PT, these are simply the more common routes to climbing the ladder.

All of these routes to progression make for fulfilling careers and the prospect of these opportunities is what can contribute to the high level of job satisfaction for personal trainers.

#6 You can Network with Other Fitness Professionals

will I enjoy my job as a pt

As a personal trainer, you can begin to network with various fitness professionals to vary up your typical schedule and grow your PT target audience.

By partnering up with relevant other fitness professionals, you have the ability to offer more services and market your PT business more successfully.

This is a great opportunity to create some sort of reputation and partner up with others who will benefit from your partnership too. For example, partnering with a sports nutritionist could be a great way to target sport professionals.

Whatever it may be, networking and building relationships within the industry can be a great way to make your job more enjoyable and keep it exciting and new so the job satisfaction can stay high.

#7 You can Turn Your Hobby into a Career

will I enjoy my job as a personal trainer

Finally, one of the best things that makes personal trainers happy within their workplace is the fact that they have turned their passion and hobby into a career.

It is unlikely that you’re going to go through a PT course if you don’t already have a level of interest in fitness. Being able to turn your hobby into a career is the dream of most people, but being able to reap all of these benefits that we have mentioned and a fulfilling career is the ideal situation.

Not only that, but your passion for fitness would only grow. As your career goes on, you can gain more and more knowledge for you and our clients, your passion behind training would push you for a more successful career and before you know it you’re living your dream.

This is almost always an answer when you ask personal trainers why they love their job, you will often see the answer –

“to turn my hobby into a career”

This is because even just being in the gym is a hobby for many, the atmosphere and the sociability that comes with it turns it into a habit that millions of people enjoy. For example, take a look at what this personal trainer had to say about what they enjoy about working in the gym:

will I enjoy my job as a personal trainer

As you can see, this PT loves to be in the gym. It is a place that makes them happy and keeps them entertained, thus, boosting their personal trainer job satisfaction overall.

Think about your hobbies, then imagine being able to get paid to be there and learn more about what you love – this is what personal training can do and it is why the percentage of people happy within their jobs as a PT is likely to stay high.

Before we break down some ways to get personal training clients from Facebook, there’s one thing you need to do first. It may seem obvious, but before we go any further, you need to create a Facebook page.

If you already have a personal Facebook account, you can do this easily by heading over to the ‘Ad centre’ tab which will pull up a page like this:

personal training facebook ads

If you don’t already have a personal account, you’ll need to create one which you can then turn into a business page.

Setting up a business page allows you to utilise business features like advertisements and tracking important metrics. You’ll also be able to make use of the Meta Business Suite, you can see below what you can do within the business suite to manage your page:

how to get personal training clients from facebook

It is super easy to set up an account, we have an extensive guide on how to set up a Facebook business account here so you can follow this first if you’re yet to have an account.

Once you have actually set up your account, you can then find the metrics and utilities that will help you actually gain clients and market your PT business successfully.

The insights that you can track with this page include factors such as:

  • Actions on page
  • Page views
  • Page likes
  • Post reach
  • Story reach
  • Recommendations
  • Post engagement
  • Videos
  • Page followers
  • Tagged product clicks

These are all useful metrics that can help you to not only measure your current success, but alter anything that isn’t working so you’re able to predict and thus implement a more positive outcome.

Once you have engagement levels to measure, you can view it all on a visual dashboard, like this:

how can I get PT clients off Facebook

This can help you to visualise on a weekly basis what needs to change and what is working well in terms of Facebook engagement. Engagement is what you need to get clients on board so ensuring that you’re keeping track of all of these factors are important.

Now you know what you can track and how this can help you get more personal training clients, here are some ways to actually get this engagement up, get some metrics to measure, and most importantly – get clients!

How to Get PT Clients From Facebook

#1- Connect With Facebook Groups to Find New Clients

personal training advertising facebook

One of the best ways to network with your clientele and find new clients is to connect with and be an active member of fitness-related groups on Facebook.

Social media users are always using facebook groups to find like minded people who they can ask for recommendations, advice, and support.

This is beneficial if you have a particular PT niche since you can find your audience coming together for support in specific Facebook groups, and be the person to offer that advice or support, and even recommend your own PT services as a solution.

For example, if you have a particular niche that offers personal training services to people who suffer with endocrine disorders such as PCOS, then Facebook can be a great place to offer your support and show how you can help.

You should look for Facebook groups that have a mixture of people looking for more information, seeking support but also seeking actual help from a professional, like a PT. For example, take a look at this public Facebook group below that brings together women from all over who suffer from PCOS.

personal training facebook ads

As you can see, this is a public group with 4.8k members. This is a huge scale target audience all looking for support in one place.

There are two ways that you can use a group like this to get new PT clients from Facebook:

  1. Post about your business on the page
  2. Respond to posts from people looking for advice or recommendations

After looking in some different groups, it seems that this one is happy with allowing members to post services that can help others. For example, take a look at this post in the group below:

personal training facebook ads

As you can see, there is some conversation too that goes on in the comments and it is a great way to start a discussion on the benefits of exercise for whatever the problem may be, which will encourage members of the group to contact you about your services.

There is also no reason why you can’t reply to people reaching out for help and advice around their health or fitness goals.

Whether it is endocrine disorders, pregnancy or postnatal care to diabetes and obesity management, there are Facebook groups for just about everything. Nonetheless, there doesn’t always have to be a particular ‘problem’ in order to engage with potential clients on Facebook.

For in-person, rather than online, personal trainers, you can mirror this strategy for ‘local groups’, where people may be looking for general fitness advice or for PT recommendations in their area.

#2- Use Facebook Ads to Get Personal Training Clients

personal training facebook ads

Facebook advertising has made the world of online paid advertising easy, meaning you don’t have to be a big time business owner or have a huge investment fund to start using it right away.

We have an extensive guide on how to create fitness Facebook ads here, so we will just go over the basics of what you can expect them to look like and how they can really benefit your business.

When you build an advertisement, you’ll be asked a range of questions to specify your target audience, these will try to get to the core of what your business is and who will want to engage with your ads. Expect to define your audience, since you’ll be asked things such as:

  • Location
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Language
  • Interests
  • Behaviours

With that in mind, it is important to do some prior research into who your personal trainer target market is so you know the answers confidently to all of these questions.

This will help to narrow down who the advert gets shown too and it creates a more streamlined and budget friendly campaign. This is because the larger your target audience is, the more you have to pay, similarly the longer you want your campaign to run, the more you will have to pay.

Nonetheless, it is a hugely effective way of increasing engagement, building brand awareness, and of course getting new clients.

Personal training advertising on Facebook can be the direct line between you and somebody sending an enquiry. So that you can see what this may look like for a PT, take a look below at this example:

how can I get pt clients from Facebook posts

As you can see, this is a great Facebook ad since it is not overloaded with information, but still has clear call to actions. This is the kind of ad you should have in order to catch attention, but not drone on too much so that people scroll on past.

They are a surefire way to get people at the very least over to your website, but hopefully also actually onboarding as clients.

#3- Always Include a CTA in Your Posts to Convert More Clients

how do i get facebook clients as a PT

We briefly touched on calls to action in our above example on Facebook ads, but what are they and why are they so important?

Here’s a definition from Investopedia:

A call to action (CTA) is a marketing term that refers to the next step a marketer wants its audience or reader to take.

For personal trainers, a good CTA to use on Facebook could be anything that directs their audience to sign up for a PT session there and then. The ‘Apply Now’ button used in the Facebook Ad we discussed in the previous section is a perfect example of this.

That said, CTAs are not only important to include on Facebook ads. You should also include a CTA in your Facebook bio and in all of your posts, even if they’re not directly sales-related.

Including a CTA in your organic posts is what takes your Facebook content from just being informative and building brand awareness, to actually getting you new clients.

On these less sales-related posts, a good CTA to use is one that encourages the audience towards becoming a paying client without directly asking them to enquire or sign up there and then.

Basically, you want to take a softer approach to getting new clients to contact you.

A good way to do this is by including a CTA that encourages clients to book a free consultation. This is an effective way of getting clients as booking a consultation doesn’t require a great deal of commitment from the potential client, meaning more people are likely to do it.

You can then use the consultation to convert the potential client into a paying one!

Read our guide on how to do a personal training consultation to find out exactly how to do this, or watch our video tutorial below:

Alternatively, you could simply direct your audience to send you a message for more information, as this personal trainer has done below:

how do i get facebook clients as a PT

The premise of this was to share their opinion on christmas and handling the diet changes however, they have still included a CTA.

In this case, they are calling their audience to make the action of messaging their page. Once an interested individual contacts this PT, they can then begin to start selling to the prospective client and convert them into a new customer.

You can find our expert tips for selling your personal training services here.

#4- Produce High Quality Organic Facebook Posts to Attract Clients

how to find personal training clients on Facebook

Another way to get personal training clients on Facebook is to ensure that your content is always of high quality.

These posts will be separate from your paid ads, as instead you will be producing content that organically reaches the right people, without the need to pay for your post to appear on their Facebook feed.

The purpose of creating organic content is to boost engagement. Engagement is what is going to boost your post and ultimately make your page stronger whether it is in terms of visibility or follower count.

By building the visibility of your page and posts, and therefore your business. The logic is simple – the more people who see your posts, the more potential clients know about your business, and the more enquiries you can generate!

If you’re unsure of what kind to post to encourage engagement, we have a full article with tons of personal trainer social media ideas here.

Other than posting interesting, informative, and shareable content, there are some ways that you can increase engagement, the first one being the time at which you post.

You can do A/B testing on your own terms on what works best for your page specifically, but there are some general times that have been backed by reliable sources such as SproutSocial.

For example, below you can see a graph from SproutSocial on the best times to post on Facebook for engagement (worldwide):

Personal training clients on Facebook

As you can see, the most engaging times to post are in and around 6am to 3pm. If you do want to ensure that you’re making the most of these engagement times but struggle to stay on schedule, there are softwares that can help you manage.

For example, you can use softwares such as:

  • Sproutsocial
  • Asana
  • Hootsuite
  • Buffer

There are tons of others but these are a mixture of the most popular and free ones too, so be sure to do some research on what works best for you and your budget.

As well as the post itself being at the right time, think about the content of the post too, make it easily shareable, useful and informative. This will increase your chances of gaining attraction and getting your post across multiple like minded Facebook feeds.

Thus, the more exposure you have, the higher your chances are in gaining clients.

#5 – Use the Correct Image Resolution

Personal training clients on Facebook

Imagery is huge when it comes to making your Facebook business page stand out from the rest. You want to keep your page looking as professional as possible so by having some high quality imagery makes all the difference.

The Facebook timeline photo and post sizes are best at the recommended size of 1200 x 630 pixels, the minimum size however is 600 x 315 pixels.

Whilst the image quality of your Facebooks posts might not get clients alone, poor quality imagery could be the reason a potential client chooses a competitor instead of your business!

Think about it, if you were to see these two images below in separate PT Facebook feeds, which page would you trust more?

Personal training clients on Facebook

The image on the right has the wrong resolution and looks careless. It doesn’t connotate any trust worthiness and makes all the difference in the post itself.

Ensure you’re always keeping your images to a high standard on regular posts and on advertisements since this is going to be a key communicator between you and the end user. Images in personal training social media posts are a huge aspect to gaining some trust from anybody interested.

This is because progress pictures should always be consistently updated in order to show off your potential as a PT and what you can do for anybody who may be considering your services.

That being said, you want to show these images in the best possible light, so ensure you have a consistent and professional looking feed of transformation posts.

This goes for graphics too. We will talk more about how to create graphics in the next tip, but ensure you’re doing all you can to make your images look professional and legit or you may run the risk of looking unreliable.

#6 – Utilise and Design Your Own Graphics to Create A Strong Brand Identity

Personal training clients on Facebook

Having branded posts can boost how people view your business. You should have consistent branding across all your channels, include your business logo and keep the basis of your branding colours the same.

So how can this actually help you to get more clients?

Here’s what mailchimp have to say:

“Brand consistency is important because it leads to brand recognition. When customers recognize your brand (and have positive associations with it), they’re more likely to make purchases and commit to your company for the long term.”

Essentially, designing your own graphics can help you get personal training clients from Facebook by giving your business a strong brand identity.

If you have consistent and recognisable branding, you’re then allowing potential clients to easily spot you among the masses.

This kind of consistency and repeated messaging makes your content more memorable and thus, much more effective in building a B2C relationship. Think about branding that is dissimilar to what is already out there, particularly in your area.

Use colours and relevant graphics that are going to be memorable but easily digestible to find the sweet spot within your branding plan. You can do this relatively easily with the help of Canva. This is an easy to use and free graphic design tool.

You can save things like branding colour packs so when you create a new design all of the correct colours are waiting for you to use. You can even design your own branding board, which is great if you ever need to share your branding with another professional or refer back to it too.

You can put this in your business plan and it is a way of keeping your image consistent and professional, this is what a branding board can look like if you make it on Canva:

gain Personal training clients on Facebook

You can either create a blank brand board from scratch or use another template as inspiration and adjust where necessary.

You can even design your logo on canva too and have a go-to place for everything branding. Creating it and storing it all in the one place is a handy way to keep it consistent and easily accessible.

Bonus Tip: Utilise Video Content Where Possible

How to get clients from facebook posts PT

Any kind of video content is good for your social media account, with video content on the rise in popularity using this to your advantage is going to help with engagement and thus, is a way how to find personal training clients on Facebook.

Facebook is hugely popular when it comes to live streams. You could potentially offer a free live streamed personal training session where people can come try out and work out at home with you live.

This would not only increase engagement but it gives potential clients the opportunity to see who you are and how you train your clients.

Similarly, if you already have a fitness Instagram you may be already creating Reels. These are becoming increasingly popular and there is no reason why you cannot share them to Facebook too since Instagram and Facebook are both under the umbrella of Meta.

You can of course use video marketing, but you should focus on creating valuable content that people are going to keep returning to since this is going to go further than an advertisement. Save the video marketing for your paid adverts or every once in a while.

Whereas general informative and fun videos should take charge over this as a priority.

Before You Go…

So, you want to know how to open a yoga studio with no money? You’ve come across the exact guide you need to get started. Within this extensive guide, you’ll find the following steps, feel free to skip to any personally relevant ones:

Before we get straight into the details, if you want to find out more about our accredited Level 4 Yoga Teacher Training qualification. You can also find this and many other vocational fitness courses in our downloadable course prospectus here.

Step 1 – You Need The Right Qualifications

How to open a yoga studio with no money

First things first, you should definitely get the right qualifications behind you to get started in the yoga industry, and this is even more important when you want to own your own studio and make money as a yoga teacher this way. It is also super important to ensure that you’re reputable, giving any students in your care confidence in you.

This is because the legality of owning a studio requires a little more responsibility compared to if you’re employed by a company. So with that being said, what is the most cost effective option when it comes to getting the right qualification?

Level 3 Diploma in Yoga Teaching

Our recommendation is to go for the blended learning approach with a level 3 diploma in yoga teaching. This is essentially a mixture of the two crucial aspects to a yoga teaching course: the practical and the all important theoretical material too.

This is because you are responsible for your independent study, utilising provided content including:

  • E-Books
  • PDFs
  • Online lectures
  • Asana library

You can find out what you’ll actually learn and how here. But the point is that with you being the driving force behind your learning time the course is thus more affordable for you, so to ensure that you can trust a yoga course, look out for the recognition of CIMSPA and regulation by Ofqual.

You should always be looking out for these two names when looking for the right course for you. Ofqual is the sister company of Ofsted and is what regulates the quality of vocational training just like this yoga teaching course.

You should also look out for CIMSPA recognition, this is the body that establishes the standards of the course content that you take, it is worth looking into these bodies prior to choosing a provider.

Nonetheless, we still know the value of hands-on experience, especially when it comes to yoga.

You need to be able to build your confidence and ensure that you’re delivering yoga classes effectively and safely. The only way to do that is to get some practical experience from experienced professionals.

That being said, don’t compromise on missing out on practical workshops by going for a unaccredited fast track course that doesn’t cover this area. That’s why we recommend the blended approach, it ensures that you gain all the knowledge and experience you need without cutting corners.

This course is the minimum requirement to get yoga teacher insurance which is non-negotiable when it comes to owning your studio. We will talk some more about the legalities later but this is how you can get qualified from a recognised provider in the most cost effective way.

Step 2 – Low-Cost Yoga Ideas and Services

how much does it cost to open a yoga studio

Once you have your qualification, the most important step is complete.

You now have the authority behind you and can start to form your brand. Opening a yoga studio with no money isn’t easy so we have some low-cost yoga ideas and services that you could begin with to kick start your studio.

Offer 1-2-1 Mobile Yoga Sessions

One way to keep outgoings low but incoming high is to offer exclusive 1-2-1 at home yoga sessions.

Since basic yoga equipment is affordable, you wouldn’t need to invest too much money into some reusable gear.

You will only need two sets of equipment, one set for you and one for your client. This includes things like:

  • Yoga mat
  • Yoga block
  • Yoga straps
  • Bolster
  • Eye pillow
  • Yoga mat cleaners

These little extras like eye pillows and bolsters (though aren’t integral parts of a yoga kit) are small investments that can make all the difference when it comes to going the extra mile for your clients.

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost

Though you’re going to visit clients in their homes for your own benefit, you could switch the narrative of what this is and actually market this service based upon exclusivity.

For example, if a client for whatever reason doesn’t want to go to a yoga class, you could be the perfect person for them. By going to their home you’re able to keep costs down and offer a 1-2-1 exclusive service that will seem even more prestigious than going to a class.

This means that you could charge more than you would if you were to set up a class. This would net you more money alongside your main classes should you decide to combine the two so it is a great way to start branching out to other opportunities.

Utilise the Outdoors for your Yoga Sessions

It is nothing new to practise yoga in nature. In fact there are huge benefits of doing yoga in the park, or other picturesque places like beaches so there is no reason why you can’t use this to your advantage.

In the UK in particular, the weather can go from one extreme to another in terms of temperature, rain, snow – it can be hard to sustain all year round. That being said, this is how to open a yoga studio for a low cost at the right time of year.

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

For example, if you want to take a budget friendly route for a short period of time while you build the financial means to open a yoga studio indoors, then holding your classes outdoors in the summer time can be a good way to do this.

Again, your outgoings will be pretty minimal, though you can choose to provide equipment if you wish, often class goers will bring their own mats, blocks etc. With that in mind, it is up to you to find the correct place outdoors, ensure that you have any necessary permits and insurance and hold the classes at the right time of year.

Though this is a budget friendly way to start the ball rolling when opening a yoga studio with no money, It wouldn’t be a class worth heading to if there wasn’t a competitive price mark so depending on location, you should be making it affordable compared to your in-studio competitors in your area.

This means that ultimately, clients will be expecting a lower price point since your outgoings would be less, you would still make profit regardless.

Begin Your Yoga Teaching Journey With Online Yoga Classes

Our third and final recommendation for those who want to know how to open a yoga studio with no money is to use the world of online yoga classes.

With the boom of online personal training, it became apparent that just about anything can be held online through the use of the likes of Zoom; so, your yoga teaching can be the same.

While online yoga classes are often cheaper than they are in a traditional studio setting, you can rake in numbers arguably easier since you’re not tied down to one single area. You can base your prices on your expertise and your accessibility rather than how close you are to potential clients’ homes and the beauty of it is that there are no startup costs.

Take a look at how successful this can be, below you can see a London based yoga studio that offers online classes:

How to open a yoga studio with no budget

This yoga studio takes a different approach from what you may expect, they offer a membership price with a huge amount of yoga class resources within the membership as well as live classes.

This can be a super affordable way to begin building your brand. So long as you have a stable internet connection and the right insurance coverage, you can start to offer remote classes for anybody around the country or even internationally who wants to join.

With the help of technology the popularity of the convenience that comes with remote yoga classes is only going to grow in our opinion so why not make this your starting point and start earning?

Step 3 – Branding Your Yoga Studio on a Budget

How to open a yoga studio with no budget

If you’re trying to research how much does it cost to open a yoga studio, there are probably more expenses than you initially think of. So while you’re now aware of the qualifications and how you can actually begin teaching without huge investment, how are you going to build the said brand?

Branding takes skill, while some may find it easy, it isn’t some people’s forte so we’re here to make it easier for you with these two top tips, even if you’re a beginner.

Don’t forget to stick around to find out more about affordable marketing tactics, this is your initial branding that we will talk about here!

Utilise Free Softwares for a Graphic Design Branding

One of the things that makes branding so accessible now is the accessibility of graphic design platforms like Canva.

Canva has made it easy and affordable for anyone to create branding materials, even if you’re a complete newbie. So the first thing you should start off with is a logo design, since no legitimate business operates without some sort of recognisable logo!

Luckily, this can be super easy. Simply log into Canva or create an account and choose the logo maker from the drop down ‘design spotlight’.

How to open a yoga studio with no budget

It is super easy to navigate and you can see that there is a huge array of creative tools on there as well. Take your time exploring the Canva site and get to grips with how it works, do a few practice runs and play about with the features before you get started with your drafting.

Once you click through to create your logo, you can expect a dashboard like this:

How to open a yoga studio with no budget

As you can see, you’re able to choose free templates that you can manipulate change around and create your own or, you can start from scratch. The templates and component features that don’t include the ‘pro’ signalling are all free.

There are tons of free options and they’re super professional looking, so don’t worry you’re not compromising on quality. If you do want the pick from the best though, you can pay for a Pro membership which could be worthwhile should you want to continue utilising the same branding tools.

As well as creating the logo, you can then get to work on other components like:

  • Flyers
  • Business cards
  • Social media content
  • Email templates

Once you’ve mastered the logo design, you’re all set to use it for free in your marketing efforts!

Use Reciprocal Offers to Collaborate With Other Professionals

how can I open a yoga studio with no money

One often overlooked way of affordably opening a yoga studio and still branding it professionally is by using potential connections within the creative industry.

Other independent professionals could have a reciprocal benefiting business relationship should you put your best foot forward. So what does this mean for you? Essentially, you could do some outreach work in your area to find graphic designers or freelance professionals that would help you with branding.

In return, you could offer them your services, free yoga classes. This helps if you’re both small businesses and instead of using financial means, use means of expertise to help you get where you want to be professionally.

You can find freelancers pretty easily online. You can utilise things like Upwork or even social media, Linkedin in particular to search for professionals that you think may be happy with what you have to offer.

This is a good way to get networking and find useful contacts within different pockets of the industry.

Step 4 –  Sourcing Affordable Yoga Equipment

how to get affordable yoga equipment

Step 4 is all about getting the most for your money.

Starting any kind of business can have considerable costs, so it is important to work smarter. However, don’t just reach for the cheapest on the market, think about investment.

Luckily, like we mentioned earlier there is only so much yoga equipment that you need (unless you’re in a particular niche like aerial yoga!) so it shouldn’t set you back too much.

The cost depends on if you want to equip your studio with everything that your class may need or, will you ask clients to bring along their own equipment? Luckily, there are some options that make the providing of equipment more affordable.

First off, you could buy in bulk and this could be a good investment into your studio. So long as you take good care of the equipment, there is no reason why it can’t last. For example, if you want to buy mats and blocks and any other props for your studio, there are wholesalers that provide a more affordable price.

For example, take a look at Ekotex yoga, who offer a discount for bulk buys especially for teachers and studios.

how to get affordable yoga equipment

As you can see, they offer convenient options for studios and teachers and by investing in a larger bulk order, you’ll be saving in the near future if you decide to buy in dribs and drabs.

As well as that, another benefit of searching for affordable wholesale options is that it can contribute to the overall uniform nature of your studio.

A studio with a particular colour scheme and equipment all the same can really help to professionalise the feel and it doesn’t look ‘jumbled’.

If however this is going to set you back a little too much, you could create a renting system. This is not anything out of the ordinary, it is quite common to be able to rent yoga studio mats or towels in many different places. This just means that they can borrow the equipment for a small price which many people prefer.

It saves them carrying around their own equipment and due to the payment the equipment should always be kept at a high standard. This could at least be an option until you have made back the money you have spent on the equipment to ensure you’re not making too much of a dip in the investment fund.

Step 5 – Legalities of Opening a Yoga Studio with No Money

how can I start a yoga studio with no money

Now for the important stuff that you can’t cut corners with, the legalities that come along with opening a yoga studio.

This might seem initially intimidating, but the good news is that much of what you need to do won’t actually set you back all that much.

First we will talk about what actually will take some level of investment.

Get the Correct Insurance to Run a Yoga Studio

If you’re completely new to the fitness industry, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to insurance, so allow us to point you in the right direction.

A good place to start is Insure4Sport. Their yoga instructor policy covers all that you need as a minimum, and you can then add on any extras that you feel necessary depending on each individual.

For example, if you’re a yoga instructor and want coverage for your equipment or for your own safety as a self-employed person, you may want to add policies to build up your plan.

Below, you can see what you can combine for the coverage you need:

how to open a yoga studio with small budget

Public liability coverage is the most important one to pay attention too. This is the policy that is going to protect you if you become liable for any incidents that happen as a result of your instruction and or in your care.

The other policies are certainly still worth adding though, policies such as personal accident and loss of earnings coverage is important if you’re self employed and are ever concerned about losing income when the cause is out of your control.

As well as that, you can protect your equipment which is a good idea if you’re planning on providing it for your class to use. Things may get taken or damaged by accident so it can be a good addition to your policy.

Finally, this example of specialist yoga insurance includes worldwide coverage. This can be useful should you want to take your services worldwide but if you’re looking for ways how to open a yoga studio with no money it is unlikely that this is on your plan just yet.

Nonetheless, there is no reason why this may not be a goal for the future so you may find it beneficial regardless.

Check what Licences You may Need for your Yoga Studio

how to open a yoga studio with small budget

You may not always need licences when opening a yoga studio, but if you do they can often be avoided until you have the necessary funds to implement them.

The two main licences that you may come across are either:

  • Music licence
  • Data privacy licence

However, both of these are only necessary in certain circumstances.

If you choose to utilise licensed music within your class, you will need a music licence. However, this isn’t always necessary since you can instead use royalty free music and you won’t be breaking any rules.

Similarly, you may come across a licence that requires you to register should you want to operate CCTV on your premises. You can find more information about this on the UK Government Licence Finder if you’re having any doubts.

Step 6 – Management Tools To Run Your Yoga Studio

Without a team of people behind you, managing a yoga studio can seem intimidating – but it doesn’t have to be.

There are tons of resources available that can help you manage your business with little to no cost.

Here are some management tools that could help you professionalise and manage your business so you can keep everything running smoothly.

Use Softwares to Manage Your Payments

Managing payments is one of the more important things that you need to successfully run and open a yoga studio with no money.

Once you start to build a bigger client base, you may find that keeping track of finances becomes a little more overwhelming, so there is no reason why you can’t turn to softwares to help you manage it all.

For example, you will likely want to separate your personal account to your business account, but there are softwares that can help you keep these organised in one place, like Mint.

Mint can help you store all of your finances in one place and manage what is coming in, going out, while also predicting useful figures, you can see below how it looks in a nutshell:

How to open a yoga studio with no money

As you can see, it is super simple and if you’re new to managing finances, you could find this incredibly useful.

The biggest selling point is that it is free, you’re able to visually see your finances in one place like this:

How to open a yoga studio with no money

This can really help you to gain control over your business and ensure that you don’t waste any time or energy on money worries due to disorganisation.

Manage your Clients with Software

Secondly, another way you can handle any growing demand from your clients is with software.

You may think that CRM software isn’t necessary until you have scaled up your business, but the key to being able to actually scale up your business is by starting while you’re small and utilising softwares to help your yoga studio grow.

Hubspot is a popular option that can start you off for free and has a good reputation for helping small businesses start off on the right foot.

With this software, you’re able to do things like:

  • Get by the minute views of your sales funnel on a visual dashboard
  • Track customer interactions automatically
  • Store leads such as calls, emails, meetings and notes

There are plenty of other useful things that you can do with HubSpot and other similar softwares too so ensure that you take advantage of any free tools available from the get go.

Step 7 – Marketing Your Yoga Studio on a Budget

how to start marketing a yoga studio with no money

Once you have decided where your marketing efforts will go, you can start to actually put it into practice.

The good news is that there are free marketing tools that you can begin using as soon as you begin the set up of your yoga studio.

Utilise Budget Friendly Marketing Research Tools

how to start marketing a yoga studio with no money

If you want to do some digital marketing for your yoga studio, utilising free marketing management tools can help you direct your attention in the right places when it comes to attracting students and growing your business.

One free tool that you can use is ThinkwithGoogle. This is a ‘digital marketing tool box’ that includes relevant things like:

  • Find my audience
  • Google Trends
  • Market finder

You can use all of these to help pinpoint who you should market your yoga studio too without spending a penny.

Once you have built up the funds, you could then utilise paid marketing research tools but this is the best place to start since you can get such valuable information with no price tag!

Use Free Email Marketing Softwares

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

Email marketing is something that will continue to grow. It has a huge success rate with HubSpot’s research telling us that for every $1 spent, the ROI is $36.

The good news is that email marketing can be free, especially when you’re just starting out as a small business. You can use the likes of MailChimp since they offer a free plan for up to 500 contacts.

You can see below a comparison between some of the plans that MailChimp offer:

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

As you can see, while you don’t get as many benefits that you do with the paid memberships, it is certainly a promising start and provides you with the kick start into marketing your yoga studio that you need.

You can gather emails from current clients or on social media and begin to create campaigns and even referral programmes to get more and more clients to your yoga classes and retain the ones you already have.

Utilise Social Media Marketing as a Free Tool

Aside from using more direct approaches like email marketing, you can also use social media to get the word out about your yoga studio.

You can set up a business social media account that can show you all kinds of useful insights, from who your most interacted demographic is to your best performing posts. This kind of insight is incredibly valuable to a small business especially when you’re looking to market yourself on a budget.

Instagram is able to show off your studio/ classes, you can communicate with potential clients and share successes of your current classes to get more people on board. This is also a great place to put some images of your studio and show people what they can expect.

For example, take a look at his yoga studio Instagram that shows their studio and the personality behind it below:

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

This is a great way to put your studio out there and you as the instructor. It can help make potential class goers at ease knowing what your studio looks like and you can entice them further by interacting with your followers.

You can then go on to utilise promotions and boost your favourite posts into advertisements; however, if you’re sticking to the free route, the best thing you can do is to be consistent.

Utilise yoga hashtags, engage and keep your page looking professional and enticing to keep followers around. It is one of the best ways to get people on board with your classes and will cost you nothing but some time and effort.

Set up a Google my Business Page

Our third and final recommendation for marketing your yoga studio with no money is to set up a Google my Business account. This is a free and easy way to make your studio available to those who are searching for studios that fit your description.

You probably use GMB more than you think, it is a great tool that makes your business information accessible. Below, you can see the results when we search for “Yoga studios in Liverpool”:

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

You can see that there is vital information that the yoga studio owners have inputted to bring up these results (the more optimised the listing is, the higher it will climb).

You can optimise the listing by ensuring that when you sign up, you input every piece of information. Besides the information that you can put in, you then need to help your listing by gaining some reviews and answering any questions you may get.

For example, take a look at the top listing who has done these things:

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

As you can see not only have all of the fields been filled by the studio themselves, but they have also answered the questions which is a great way to optimise your listing.

Similarly, reviews are a great way to improve your chances of climbing to the top few listing on GMB, this same studio has great review rate too as you can see:

How to open a yoga studio for a low cost budget

You can politely ask your class if they could leave reviews and it can help boost your chances of getting noticed.

The great thing about all of these techniques is that they will not dip into your investment fund. They are all free and are great tools when opening a yoga studio with no money.

Before You Go…

So, is it expensive to open a yoga studio? Hopefully you feel confident in knowing that you don’t need all the money in the world to get the ball rolling.

Can I Become A Yoga Instructor Online?

how to become a yoga instructor online

So before we get into the mechanics of how to become a certified yoga instructor to teach classes online, you may be wondering if it is even possible in the first place.

The answer is yes, you can absolutely get qualified as a yoga instructor online. With the technology that is readily available now, you’re able to take advantage of in depth courses online, but there are some things to consider.

First, not every course is detailed enough to be taught online, so don’t jump at the first one that you find. We will take you through factors to consider and what to look for in a provider later; but for now, you just need to be aware of the fact that accredited course providers will be able to still offer a course online without compromising on quality.

With all of that in mind, allow us to explain what you need to do before you go ahead and book your course to become a yoga instructor online.

What You’ll Need Before You Become A Yoga Teacher Online

how to become certified yoga instructor online

Before you take a yoga teaching course, it would be helpful for your own benefit to have some level of experience behind you.

No matter the type of yoga style-for example, attending Kundalini classes, if you want to become a Kundalini yoga teacher-you should try to attend some varied classes to get to grips with not only the practical aspects, but how classes are delivered by the instructors.

Chances are, if you’re looking for ways how to become a certified yoga instructor online, you already have some level of experience and this has led you to pursue a career in the industry. However, if you’re only accustomed to one style, it would be a good idea to try out new classes.

This not only expands your practical experience in general, but you get to find out which kind of discipline you gel with the most. This will help you to, in the future, potentially choose a discipline to teach when you go on to do advancement courses like a level 4 in yoga teaching.

become certified yoga instructor online

Nonetheless, though this level or at least some level of experience behind you is desirable, it isn’t obligatory. You actually don’t need any experience to enrol onto an online yoga teaching course (this may vary between providers, but our online yoga course here at OriGym has no prerequisites).

This is because during the course, you will gain all the experience that you need. You will learn how to actually deliver a class effectively, while also gaining knowledge about the mechanics of the body in relation to yoga movement.

This means that you will gain experience in planning the sessions and thus, getting to grips with the many asanas (yoga poses) that are included in the session plan. The difference between having some experience behind you and having none is how quickly you will pick up the asanas and gain confidence in not just the execution, but explaining and instructing them effectively.

So, now that you know what to do before you become a yoga instructor online, let’s talk about the important factors to consider for your yoga teacher training.

6 Key Factors To Consider When Becoming A Yoga Teacher Online

#1 Number Of Hours Of Learning

become a certified yoga instructor online

One of the first things you need to think about when you’re looking for ways how to become a yoga teacher online is how many hours you will learn for. You might already be aware of this, but the amount of hours that you spend learning on the yoga course is what employers will be interested in.

Often there is a minimum requirement of 200 hrs for yoga instructor jobs, thus, the more hours you have behind you the better as more prestigious employers may ask for up to or surpassing 400 hours.

The good news is that you can still achieve this with an online course, for example, you can see below in our online yoga course description how many hours you can expect of study:

become a certified yoga instructor online uk

As you can see, you will learn over 400 hours of content. This aligns well with what is expected of you within the industry, we did some digging and found some relevant job openings for yoga instructors within various yoga studios and the amount of hours required are just about always included in the job description.

become a certified yoga instructor online in the UK

how do I become a certified yoga instructor online

As you can see, this is an advert for Virgin Active gyms, one of the more high end commercial gyms in the UK and internationally. This requires a minimum of an accredited qualification with 200 hours, so anything more than this would be highly beneficial, improving your overall chances of getting hired.

So, when looking for a course provider, ensure that they mention the amount of hours of training that is included in the course, since it is highly likely that you will need to prove this should you apply for a job role.

For some more helpful resources on becoming a certified yoga instructor, head over to these articles below:

#2 Ensure that you Find a Trusted Course Provider

become a yoga instructor online

Leading on from what we just mentioned about the amount of hours in your course, this is a good way to find a trusted provider.

You simply won’t get the quality, quantity or accreditation from a free yoga course, so you can begin by taking those providers out of the equation. A good first step is to look for courses that mentions not only the amount of study hours like in the aforementioned example, but also factors such as:

  • Accreditation
  • Awarding body
  • Module breakdown
  • Progression routes
  • Professional connections

The list can go on, but as a minimum, ensure that you’re looking out for these things when choosing a provider. The most prominent way of deciphering a trusted provider from one that isn’t is accreditation and awarding bodies.

Look out for things like “accredited by CIMSPA”. This means that the course information has met the standards set by them as a regulatory body in the professional fitness industry. Aside from CIMSPA endorsement, you should also become familiar with the best awarding bodies, like Focus Awards.

how to become a certified yoga instructor online

If you check the awarding body, you can verify if it is regulated by Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation). Ofqual is the sister of what you may know as Ofsted, and they regulate and ensure the efficacy of particular health and fitness courses.

Aside from the professional names, you should always look for trustworthy reviews to find out if you’re choosing a well received course provider. Sites like TrustPilot are a great start to find out what people have to say about not just the provider, but the course content itself.

For example, using OriGym’s TrustPilot as an example, you can see below the volume of people who have reviewed, and the average star review:

how to become a certified yoga instructor online in the UK

This is a great way for those who need transparency to trust a provider, so always ensure you’re checking peoples reviews to ensure you’re getting what you need from your online yoga course.

Looking out for these kinds of things will allow you to rest assured that you have chosen the right provider.

#3 Course Resources

become yoga instructor online

The actual content of the course is what makes it worthy of recognition and regulation. There should be modules that guide you through every step, from learning the poses yourself, to trying to deliver them effectively.

So, you should always research what the content of the course actually covers. You can find the course contents on the website of your provider, like this:

can i become a yoga instructor online

This is a small section taken from our course description. This goes on to include all of the course contents, all the way up to Unit 8. As well as that you’re able to see the aim of each module and why it relates to yoga practice.

As you can see from just two units, there is a huge amount of learning material. This is particularly important since you’ll be learning online, thus, there is no compromise on quantity or quality.

This is why we are able to stress that while it is desirable for your own benefit to have some experience, it isn’t a necessity due to the volume of material that should be included within the course.

#4 Available Support & Contact Time

become a yoga teacher online

Something that may often go overlooked when looking for ways how to become a yoga instructor online is the support you have along the way and after you have completed the course.

Getting thrown into the deep end into an industry that you are new to can be incredibly intimidating. That’s why you should always find out if the online course of your choice offers support during and post course completion.

Support from real human beings is important, especially when the course is online. In a classroom setting, you can simply raise your hand to ask a question so you should find an online yoga course that replicates this contactability so you’re not waiting for emails weeks later.

So what kind of things should you be looking for?

First is of course a contact number, a reliable phone line with opening hours so you know when you will get an answer. However an even better way to get an answer to any questions you might have is to look for a live chat.

A live chat is going to be the best way to know if your course provider is readily contactable. You should be able to find out this information on the course page, like this:

become a yoga teacher fully online

It is important to look out for these features within online courses, the last thing you want or need is to be left in the dark if you need support with anything.

#5 Staff Knowledge

how to become a yoga teacher online

One other factor to look out for is the knowledge behind those who are teaching you.

Even if the course content is regulated and endorsed by relevant bodies, the delivery of the content is just as important. However, since you’re looking for how to become a yoga instructor online, you should consider the staff knowledge when it comes to practical knowledge.

You won’t be able to deliver a session confidently without some level of practical knowledge behind you, so while you can learn all you need to know theoretically online, there are some things that require hands-on experience taught from an experienced member of staff.

This can vary from provider to provider, but at OriGym you will take part in a number of workshops that will help you to implement the essentials as a yoga teacher. Take a look at how you learn on the online yoga teaching course with OriGym for example:

how to become a yoga teacher online remotely

You can enquire about who is teaching you for any course, you are paying for quality after all and should care about the tutors who are going to help you to successfully complete your course.

Ensure that you’re taking care of your future and choosing the right online course based on the quality of the content and the deliverability.

#6 Payment Plans & Financing

how do i learn to be a yoga teacher online

Finally, think about how you’re going to pay for your course. Are you going to pay for it all upfront? Finance it? Or look for a free course?

Let’s break these options down first so that you know what is available to you.

First, paying upfront is a good option for those who have the financial means but this isn’t always the case for everybody. That being said, a good course provider would allow you to spread the cost so that you’re not waiting for the right time and can start learning right away.

However, there are some things that you need to be looking out for if you’re considering financing options, the main thing is that it states “0% financing”. This means that you won’t be charged extra interest should you want to spread the cost of the course over 12 months for instance.

how do i learn to be a yoga teacher online uk

When it comes to the likes of free courses, this is typically a no-go, they are more often than not un-accredited and pretty useless. Instead, invest your time into a course that will help you to pursue a career in yoga instruction.

Above all, paying outright is always a popular option, since the course is online you would get access to it right away.

The bottom line is that you should have options, this is a feature that only the more reliable course providers offer, it allows you to pursue your career while taking into consideration varied financial positions.

9 Marketing Ideas For A Nutritionist

#1 – Use Paid Social Media Advertisements as Means of Nutritionist Marketing

how to market a nutrition business

Paid social media advertisements are a hugely popular way to get your name out there, they are a budget-friendly way to maximise your chances of attracting the attention of your target market.

So how do you set this up? First, you will need a nutritionist business account. Start by setting up a personal account on Instagram or Facebook, in this instance we will take you through the process of setting up Meta ads on Instagram.

You can see below, from left to right an example of how to set up an advert through a business account on Instagram.

marketing your nutrition business

As you can see, you’re able to set a goal for your advert, whether it be to increase traffic to your website or Instagram page or for more direct messages.

One of the best things about social media advertising is that you can be super specific about your audience. You can see that you can define your audience automatically, which means that Instagram will use your current followers to make an educated assumption on the demographics of who should view your advertisement.

how to market yourself as a nutritionist

You’re able to choose what kind of things that you want to specify in terms of audience, including factors such as:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Location

You can decide the exact metrics of these things with what is probably the most important and relevant tool – the ‘create your own audience’ feature. It is recommended that you use this since you can specifically target the market that you want.

If you choose this option you’ll see a screen like this below which allows you to specify the location of the people whom you want to see the ad:

nutritionist marketing

As you can see, all you need to do is slide the bar from your current location to adjust and it will show you the radius in which your ad can be seen across.

This is a great way to ensure that you’re getting local people if you’re in a nutritionist office setting. However, you can still have this radius much larger if you decide to take your services online too since you won’t be tied down to one location.

Within this advert, you should ensure you have a call to action. This is something that takes users to another page, like to click on your advert and enquire about your nutrition coaching services.

So that you can see what this looks like in action, below you can see an example of a Meta advertisement for a nutritionist:

marketing ideas for nutritionist

The CTA for this is the ‘Learn more’ button which is a link to their website, where users can find out more and enquire about their weight loss course.

You should always have a relevant call to action, whether it is to your website landing page, social profile or an enquiry page – use the most actionable link.

Remember, all of these things are under Meta, which means that you need to also build a Facebook business page and connect the two. You can then run Facebook ads as well as Instagram adverts and assess which ones work best for you by tracking the insights of both.

Ensure you run both for the same amount of time and make the testing fair on both ad campaigns. This will help you understand what kind of market you should focus more on, either Instagram or Facebook.

The setup for Facebook works very similarly, you can find an extensive guide that we have on setting up Facebook ads here if you want to take this step first instead of Instagram advertisements.

#2  Google Ads are Among the Most Prominent Marketing Ideas for a Nutritionist

marketing ideas for nutritionists

Google Ads are used in every kind of industry, they are a proven way to pay to get relevant traffic (your target audience) on your website where they can then enquire or sign up for your services.

Most importantly, Google Ads have a great ROI (return on investment). So, where to start?

First, start by choosing the keyword or ‘search term’ that you want your website to rank for. Your chosen keyword or search term should reflect the kind of phrase your potential clients are searching for when looking for a business like yours.

Some examples might include:

  • Nutritionist in *insert location*
  • Nutrition coach for *specific audience*
  • Nutritionist near me

Once you’ve decided on a keyword, say you want your website to come up on the first page of Google when somebody searches the term, ‘sports nutritionist near me’, the next step is to check out the costs.

Tools like AHrefs or Google Ads themself can help you determine an approximate cost per click (CPC) for every keyword. This CPC is the amount that you will pay every time a potential client clicks on your Google Ad to navigate to your website.

This example search term has the following ‘top of the page bid’ according to Google Ads planner:

how to grow nutrition practice with marketing

As you can see, the average price that advertisers pay ranges from £0.33 – £1.20 per click. This is roughly how much you will need to pay if somebody clicks your Google Ad.

One of the most appealing things about Google Ads and their CPC model is that you only pay when somebody clicks your link. If a user scrolls past your link, it doesn’t cost you a penny.

Google advertising has clear positive impacts on businesses. Below, you can see the efficacy of Google Ads by the figures of what the approximate conversion rate is for those who utilise it:

tips for marketing nutrition private practices

The same research shows that the average conversion rate for Google Ads is up to 6% across all devices! This tells us that when people are clicking on Google Ads for specific terms like ‘nutritionist near me’, they have high intent, and are likely to become a customer or client.

This conversion rate is much higher than those of non-paid results and Google, mainly because paid Ads get the best spots – they’re situated at the top of the page. Here’s an example:

nutrition marketing strategies

As you can see, they are sitting at the top of the page and are thus much more likely to be clicked on first.

Reliable statistics show that the higher up in Google’s results a website is (or the better they ‘rank’), the more clicks, conversions and traffic it receives.

As shown in the graph below, the higher a webpage ranks, the higher its click-through rate (CTR):

nutrition marketing plan

The CTR is determined by the number of times your advert is clicked, divided by the amount of times that it is seen.

As you can see, there is a huge difference from the first-ranking result to the webpage sitting at the number 10 spot, as well as a significant drop from the first to the second-ranking website, showing that the higher up you can pay to be in the results, the more website clicks you can get.

This is why Google Ads are so effective, users are generally impatient and want an answer to their questions fast. Business owners know this which is why they pay and compete for the top spot.

Aside from how high up your website is on Google’s search results page, you should consider other ways to get people to click your link. For example, by offering some sort of incentive.

A good example is to offer something of value to the user within the meta description. As you can see below, nutritionist J Clarke has done exactly this:

how to market a nutrition company

As you can see, there is a clear incentive for the end user – a code offering 20% off.

Including this in the meta description text means that it is visible on the results page, and can therefore attract users to click on this specific link compared to the others that don’t have this kind of leverage.

So now that you know why it is a reliable marketing tool and brings real results, where do you start? Head over to the Google Ads home page first off and browse the site, to find out more information.

There are tons of resources on their site where you can find everything you need, you can even speak to an expert to see how you can get started especially if you have concerns about affordability. Google may have some helpful offers too so it is worth checking consistently, for example as of December ‘22 Google was offering the following deal:

how can I market a nutrition business

This means you’re getting double the amount of credit for your investment, this will help you feel the benefits of Google Ads more – the bigger the investment the better since you’re able to run your campaign longer and increase your chances to outbid any potential competitors.

It is a serious investment, particularly if you’re creating a pricey campaign so ensure you do plenty of research beforehand. Nonetheless, it is a surefire way to professionalise your business and start seeing some serious ROI.

#3 – Utilise Google Business for A Free Marketing Strategy

how do I market a nutrition business

If you want to know how to market a nutrition business for free, GoogleMyBusiness is a great tool to utilise.

GooglemyBusiness is a tool that you will have likely used before. It allows you to create a listing for your business. This listing consists of vital information about your business.

This information is then easily accessible to users searching for a business like yours in your specific location.

Here’s a screenshot of what these listings include and what they look like for users searching ‘nutritionists in London’:

marketing a nutrition business

As you can see, GMB allows you to upload and list your nutrition business with all the relevant information there. This helps any interested users get in touch and find out more without having to put any effort into it at all.

There are some things however that are out of your control when it comes to GMB, like reviews. Reviews are the most important thing about marketing your business on GMB since they can be a great way to legitimise your business and draw in potential clients, they also help you build up a star value on GMB.

You can see in the aforementioned example, we have highlighted the average star rating. This star rating is pulled from reviews so it is a good idea to try to encourage your clients to leave honest reviews.

This allows your clients to do the marketing for you, it is transparency which is what people want to see when hiring a nutritionist’s capabilities.

Aside from that, you have the basics like:

  • Opening hours
  • Contact number
  • Your address.

Your address section is directly linked to the local intent, this is the map that you can see on the example, the red pinpoints are all businesses so you can see their exact location.

This works alongside the local 3 pack, which is a term used for the top 3 results that are localised for the most relevant results to the end user. This is why it is so important to have a listing so that you can optimise it and reach more local end-users thus, the higher the chance you have of actually making conversions.

Always keep in mind your end goal, you want to make sure that your marketing business is easy to find, and accessible and that people don’t have to work hard to find answers. GMB is how to market yourself as a nutritionist smarter, rather than harder!

#4 – Optimise Your Website for SEO

how do i start marketing my nutrition business

Having a nutritionist website is vital, you need to have a hub for potential clients to find the services that you offer and find out who you are.

Ultimately, your website is a place where you can show your worthiness as a professional and encourage visitors to enquire about your services. That said, it is no use having all of this information on a website that nobody can find.

This is where SEO (search engine optimization) comes in. The key attraction of using SEO compared to the aforementioned PPC Google Ads (discussed in Step 2) is that SEO-enriched traffic is organic.

This means that you’re not paying for your place among the top ten results on the SERP (search engine results page).

Instead, you’re gaining your spot there because you have met the requirements of Google’s ranking factors and your site has been deemed relevant for the target keyword search. Organic results appear like this, just below any paid ad spots:

market nutrition businesses

With that in mind, where do you start to optimise your site?

First, pick your keyword, if you don’t have too much of an investment fund, avoid using an overly competitive keyword. To find out if it is competitive or not, use tools like AHrefs.

AHrefs will give you insights into how difficult it is to reach the top-ranking websites on the Google search results page. It will look like this:

market nutrition business

You can see that the generic term of nutritionist in London has a ‘hard’ difficulty when it comes to ranking in the top 10 websites.

You should typically go for keywords that are less difficult but still include your target keyword or phrase. You could do this by including a reference to a more specific location or particular niche. For example, you could try ‘Nutritionist in Hackney’.

Narrowing down the search with more specific search terms will allow you to find less competitive keywords which will be easier to rank for, making it easier for potential clients to find you.

For example, take a look at this keyword below:

where to start with marketing a nutrition business

As you can see, the keyword difficulty has dropped dramatically. This means that it is easier to rank for this keyword and therefore is a good place to start should you only just be starting with SEO.

So that you can see what it takes to rank organically, here is a short analysis of a nutritionist who has managed to rank 4th organically through SEO best practices for the aforementioned keyword.

market nutrition business

As you can see, this nutritionist has ranked on Google organically.

Including their target keyword within their link title and meta description, as highlighted below, is one of the main factors helping this nutritionist rank well:

marketing for nutritionists

Ensure that you’re including your target keywords within the first sentence of your meta description and the title itself, at a minimum.

Keywords also need to be included within the pages themselves. Good SEO is all about finding the balance between including plenty of keywords while being cautious to not jam the keywords and overuse them, as this can be a detriment to the success of your SEO.

Aside from keywords, you need to ensure you are uploading not just valuable text, but also valuable imagery. Visitors to your site are likely to be deterred from difficult-to-digest chunks of text. So, you must break up your content with relevant images and video content where possible.

For example, the site we have referenced does this well, as you can see:

marketing for nutritionists online

The reason you should aim for page breaks like this is to increase dwell time while reducing bounce rate. Here is a brief breakdown of what these ranking factors mean:

  • Dwell time: The amount of time spent on the page the user has clicked on.
  • Bounce rate: The amount of people who leave your page right away without continuing throughout the site.

If you work on these factors, among others, it is going to help you to increase your chances of crawling to the top of the SERP. You should do some extensive research into SEO, because there are huge amounts of information to take in but, here are some ranking factors to be aware of:

  • Relevance of content: How relevant your sales pages and over content of your site are to the user’s keyword.
  • Quality of content: If you have high-quality content, other sites will link to your site (backlinks), this tells Google that your content is of high quality.
  • Useability: This relates to how your site is navigated, including factors such as if your site is mobile-friendly.

Keep up to date with how Google decides which ranking factor accounts for the most value, as time goes on it would not be surprising if this changes with the development of technology and the way people utilise websites for finding services, like nutritionists.

#5 – Use a Referral Scheme within your Nutrition Marketing Plan

how can i market my nutritionist business

To run a referral program you should focus on what your incentive is going to be.

Though you may have some clients that will naturally refer you by word of mouth, you can push for these referrals more by incentivising them. By doing this, you can ensure that you’re only distributing offers when it is going to benefit your business.

Just take a quick look at what this research showed regarding conversion and the general success of referrals:

how can i market my nutritionist business uk

It is a safety net beneath any investments or discounts, so how can you ensure this is among your nutrition marketing strategies? Begin by deciding on what you’re going to use as your incentive – some examples may include the following for both the referral and the referer:

  • A free first session
  • Free consultation
  • Percentage off a monthly package
  • Cash back offer

The point is, that the incentive has to be worthy enough of people pursuing the referral in the first place. Not only that, but you should aim to benefit both parties, whether they both get the same reward or different ones is up to you as the business owner.

This is done in all industries since it is often a fool-proof way of gaining more clients and making current customers/clients happier all the while. You can see below an example of a nutrition company that runs a ‘refer a friend’ program:

marketing my nutritionists business

As you can see, this company uses two different offers for both parties, so they don’t always have to be the same to be effective. It wouldn’t be unusual to see the referrer getting the ‘better’ incentive since you’re practically thanking them for being a loyal client too.

The whole process is pretty simple, do some self-assessment and find out what your most popular services are as these may be the more valuable incentives to offer.

This can help you to get more clients on board since you’ll be putting your best foot forward and showing what you do best.

#6 – How to Grow Your Nutrition Practice with Marketing Printed Materials

Marketing tactics for nutritionists

Even in an era dominated by digital marketing, you can still take advantage of printed materials and the benefits that come along with them. Printed marketing materials include the likes of:

  • Business cards
  • Leaflets
  • Billboards (should you have the budget)
  • Brochures
  • Stickers
  • Posters
  • Window displays

As a nutritionist, there are tons of relevant places where you can put these types of printed materials, so before we tell you about how you can create these materials, here are some of the relevant places where you can distribute them.

  • Private/commercial gyms
  • GP offices
  • Community centres
  • Relevant clubs – e.g: local Slimming World clubs
  • Local sports clubs – eg: Football clubs

If you’re working specifically as a sports nutritionist, you might want to focus on places like gyms and sports clubs since this is the audience that you’ll be hoping to attract. That being said, either make your printed material advertising your holistic services as a nutritionist or create separate materials that are tailored for each place of distribution.

For example, lean more towards your nutritionist skills about particular sports in the likes of gyms or sporting clubs; you can also tailor some other printed material to focus on heart health on the printed materials that you want to distribute to GPs or community centres where the general population of these places are at an older age bracket.

So, once you know what you want to create and distribute, how do you do this with no experience in marketing your nutrition business?

One of the most popular print marketing materials is business cards, we have an extensive guide on creating nutritionist business cards here for you to follow if you’re ready for a small investment to start using print materials.

Aside from business cards, some things would also act as a small investment but still pull in results. Things like posters and stickers with your logo on them can be made for free on the likes of Canva, so you would only be paying a small price for the actual print and delivery service.

Canva is incredibly easy to use since it was made for people who have no experience in graphic design. With that in mind, you can see below the huge array of templates that are available for print marking materials:

Marketing tactics for nutrition companies

It has never been easier to make professional-looking materials when marketing your nutrition business and what is so useful with the likes of Canva is that it is free to use so have a play around with features and templates and start building your branding and marketing materials.

#7 – Organic Content & UGC On Social Media is How to Market a Nutrition Business on a Budget

marketing stratedgy for nutritionists

Social media marketing is only getting stronger, with fitness Instagram accounts earning huge amounts of money for a single post.

So, while it might not be your goal to earn a living from posting on social media, this demonstrates what kind of scale you can market on social media. We mentioned earlier how organic traffic is so valuable when it comes to SEO, but the same goes for social media too.

Aside from paid advertising, you can gain huge attraction from organic traffic that you have built from posting informative and enticing posts. Engagement is huge, you need to be utilising the free tools that you have and social media is one of them, with hard work you can make money and generate clients with a good social media presence behind you.

You can build up a healthy running page by starting with a regular posting schedule by using software like Sproutsocial, while also taking care in how you present your page.

Keep in mind that your goal is marketing your nutrition business so you should be trying to strike a balance between keeping your social media personal to an extent so people can see the face behind the business, while still promoting your nutrition business.

You can do this with the 80/20 approach that is popular among businesses on social media. This essentially means that you should keep only 20% of your content promotional, while the rest should focus on creating value so your followers stick around.

This will help you to build a reliable brand and in turn, boost your legitimacy as a business and bring more opportunities for interaction. Once you start to gain this interaction level, you can use this to your advantage by utilising user-generated content (UGC) to promote your services and brand.

UGC really pushes your authenticity and sets you apart from the rest, it includes general posts such as photos, videos etc but about nutritionists, one of the most valuable types of UGC is testimonials.

For example, take a look at this nutritionist that does this well:

how to market a nutrition business

As you can see, this isn’t overly promotional, yet it does still celebrate the success of its services through praising this client.

The bottom line is, that you should limit your promotional efforts and let the quality of your work promote you. You can ask client permission to share testimonials and celebrate their accomplishments, this again legitimises your businesses and boasts authenticity.

All of these positive contributions to your social media feed into your nutritionist marketing plan and help to turn interested users into paying clientele.

#8 – How to Market Yourself as a Nutritionist for the Masses With Email Marketing

how to market a nutrition business in the uk

Email marketing is a great way to keep the relationship between you and your mailing list consistent. It is a reminder that you’re always there and can take a specific route to either retaining clients, generating new ones or pushing for referrals.

However, before you begin constructing your strategy, you need to first gather your contacts. You can do this through general lead magnets and prompts on your website like this nutritionist does:

how to market a nutrition business in the uk

This kind of prompt in this example is known as an exit intent pop-up. It appears when the user heads toward the exit button. This can be super helpful, but you may find it more useful if you incentivise it.

For example, if you exchange a nutrition plan example or recipes for their email address or a percentage off code. It is unlikely that people will want to sign up for no reason, so give them a reason!

You should then start by deciding on a goal for your email marketing plan. The useful thing about email marketing campaigns is that you don’t need just one goal, and the goals that you do have can even change track along the journey that an email campaign takes.

For example, if your goal is to make a sale, you would create a campaign that has this end goal. This doesn’t mean that you dive right into a promotional email and then be done with it, it is a journey.

This ‘journey’ is often compressed into 5 steps, you may find other variations of these steps but these are a good starting point to make it clear:

  1. Acquisition: You have gained the email address from some sort of lead magnet that has enticed the end user, so you should send a series of short but useful welcome emails to introduce your nutrition business.
  2. Consideration: This is when a user turns into a possible client, they could be following a link from a previous email browsing your nutrition packages but abandoning the page soon after. This helps you to know which users to nurture and attempt to convert into clients.
  3. Purchase: If a client decides to invest in your nutrition services, you should then send your thank you emails and keep them up to date on what is going to come next. Keep them in the loop and don’t abandon them after they have purchased.
  4. Retention: Keep your paying clientele around by using retention strategies. This might include things like special offers or personalised emails like birthday wishes, keeping the relationship active and ready to re-engage and make further sales or referrals.
  5. Re-engagement: Re-engagement is incredibly important, particularly if you’re noticing inactive users. This might be people who don’t open your emails anymore or those who haven’t taken any action for a long time.

You may be wondering how you can notice this sort of thing, but this is what email marketing automation is for.

Popular software includes the likes of MailChimp and Campaign Monitor, these provide an affordable route to start email campaigns, even for small businesses.

For example take a look at the pricing brackets for MailChimp subscriptions and the affordability prospects depending on what you want from the software and how many contacts that you want/need:

email marketing for nutrition business

As you can see, there is even the opportunity to utilise email marketing for free, perfect if you’re just getting used to it or are new to marketing together. We have an extensive guide on creating your email campaign strategy, so ensure you take yourself through that for some in-depth help in starting up a campaign.

Whatever your journey consists of, practise it. Do some test runs on family and friends’ email addresses and check everything is running smoothly, this will help ensure that your emails aren’t falling into your contacts’ spam folders or that any graphics/images aren’t loading correctly.

You don’t want badly constructed email campaigns going out without you even being aware so, test and then send out and begin your campaigns.

#9 – Content Marketing is a Popular way How to Market Yourself as a Nutritionist

marketing ideas for nutrition business

Finally, one more way to get your nutrition business out there is to create a nutrition blog within your webpage. This can draw in traffic to your website, direct readers to your sales pages and has the potential to convert readers into paying clients.

This links directly to SEO which we already went into detail about so we will keep this final tip brief, but it is still important to know how blogs in particular can benefit you aside from sales pages.

When it comes to content, you can base your articles around the keywords that you have researched and answer any questions that people have about nutrition.

This establishes your authority in the industry and can help to build a strong brand that has legitimacy behind it.

If you have a strong website that is consistently updated with new, fresh SEO-enriched content, the strength of your website grows thus, helping you to rank higher.

If you’re offering nutrition services, of course, you should be writing about nutrition; it should be useful, and informative and always create value so that you become a trusted source. For example, look how this nutritionist has a blog on their website and writes about relative subjects:

marketing ideas for nutrition business

You can see how it is a part of their site and once you click on it, you can find a navigation bar so you can browse relevant subjects and take a look at their writing:

marketing ideas for nutrition businesses

Blogs like this can start to gain huge amounts of attraction and you can go on to guest post and generate backlinks, improving the stability and quality of your website.

Content marketing doesn’t just allow you to communicate with your target audience, but it allows you to network within the industry as well.

Things like a guest on your blog can help you to establish some authority in the industry. For example, if you can interview popular fitness professionals you can drive more traffic to your site and gain some recognition from new audiences.

The USP of content marketing though is that it is pretty much free. Yes, it will certainly take some time investment and lots of research to ensure you’re only putting out factually correct and informative pieces, but financials-wise – it’s a win.

This is why it is one of the best places to start when marketing your nutrition business, it can take some practice to gain a steady stream of content that is valuable, but there is the potential for your blog to grow into a business of its own where in you can generate money and attraction for writing about what you’re passionate about – nutrition.

If you’re wanting to teach your own yoga classes, you’re probably asking do you need a license to teach yoga? We’re here to answer your questions and tell you what you need to know when setting up your new class, including:

Before we answer your questions, if you’re yet to get qualified as a yoga teacher, you may want to take a look at our L3 yoga teaching course here at OriGym. Find this and many others in our downloadable course prospectus here.

What Licenses do You Need to Teach Yoga?

do you need a license to teach yoga

When it comes to a yoga teaching license, it is somewhat of a grey area. Nonetheless, what is preferred and what is legally required are two different things so we will try to make the line a little less blurry.

In terms of licenses, it is dependent on the circumstances. If you’re self-employed in the UK and run your own yoga studio, you may need to use the UK Government website to determine what applies to your business since licenses can vary.

However, if you’re a freelance yoga teacher who instructs underemployment then this isn’t your responsibility – only your qualifications are but we will talk more about this later.

Nonetheless, if you do find yourself in the first position and are opening your own studio, you can find the UK Government license finder here, it looks like this:

yoga license to teach

You’re then able to scroll until you find either the relevant license, or the link “License Finder”, like this below:

do I need a licence to teach yoga classes

This is when you can search for your specific license to ensure that you’re covered and the whole process is pretty straightforward and super easy to navigate. You can see below, we searched for a fitness centre.

yoga license to teach

(Since the term yoga studio is not a stand alone option, it will fall under this category.)

You can add all that apply to you should you have any other activity or business propositions that are unique to your business.

After you go onto the next step, you can actually see the licenses, this is where you can choose the activities that you want to do when writing your yoga business plan.

This can vary if when asked where you will be located you choose either Scotland or Northern Ireland so make sure you check the right box on that question.

As you can see, the whole process is really simple. That being said, let’s take a closer look at the most relevant licenses for you as a yoga teacher.

You Might Need a Music License if You own a Studio

yoga license to teach

If you hold yoga classes within a studio and you wish to play music in the background, you could need a music license.

You can see below what it says on the UK government website about the importance of music licenses:

yoga license to teach

This is a license that protects you should you utilise music on the likes of Spotify, radio channels or any streaming services alike.

You can contact PPL PRS to check and get a quote on the license if you need one. However, you don’t always need one.

You can still play music without a license as long as it is royalty free. Since you’re teaching a yoga class, it is unlikely that you will want the top 40 charts on in the background, so you can avoid the license altogether if you use specific ambient sounds that are royalty free.

You can find it really easily, all you need to do is Google “royalty free music”, take a look at the popular results that are available:

do I need a licence for my yoga class

It is super easy to get a hold of as you can see. So, it is completely up to you whether you want the yoga license to teach your classes with licensed music or royalty free music!

You Could Need a License if you want to Operate CCTV

do i need a business license to teach yoga

If you’re wondering do I need a business license to teach yoga in your own studio, the answer can be yes if you want to operate CCTV on your premises.

While if you’re an employee this won’t be your responsibility, it will be your responsibility if you’ve started your own yoga studio, are the owner and wish to install and utilise CCTV.

This is because you will be essentially handling data, which comes with a level of responsibility and requires a license for businesses.

You can see below a snippet from what the UK government says about this license where we have highlighted the most important sections, you can find the full guide on what you need to know here.

yoga teaching license

As you can see, you can actually be exempt from notification, but you should always double check on the website.

As well as that, it isn’t an absolute requirement to have CCTV in the first place, think about what area you’re in and if there are already businesses who have cameras nearby that would cover your studio parameter.

It is always best to check, so ensure that you have read our article that discusses the licenses you need to work as a yoga teacher.

Why You Should Get Qualified as a Yoga Teacher

yoga teaching license do i need one

In the UK, you don’t legally need a qualification to teach yoga. However, there are some things that you cannot do without the qualification. Without a yoga qualification, you cannot get yoga teacher insurance.

Without yoga teacher insurance, you could become liable for any accidents. So, as you can see there is a knock-on effect from not having the initial qualification.

Besides that, you would struggle to find any authority within the industry with no training behind you, and it’s highly unlikely that you would get employed for any jobs.

With all that in mind, it is highly unlikely that you’ll have a successful studio of your own with no credentials behind you and then no licenses would be necessary!

That being said, licenses and qualifications work hand in hand, so it is important that you make getting qualified your first step before moving on to thinking about licenses.

For some more helpful resources on the administrative side of opening a yoga studio, head over to these articles below:

What Qualifications Do You Need to Get a Yoga License?

what qualifications do i need for a yoga licence

How long it takes to become a yoga teacher depends on the type of qualification you complete. In order to open up your studio and go through all of the steps we have mentioned to get a legitimate studio up and running, you need qualifications. These are the two most prominent ones that can get you industry ready.

Level 3 Diploma in Yoga Teaching

A level 3 diploma in yoga teaching (at OriGym) teaches over 400 hours worth of content combining practical and theoretical vital subjects.

This is often a minimum for any yoga teaching job, plus, you will need this to be eligible for insurance purposes too. As well as that, you’ll struggle to get hired with no qualifications so, you need to be able to prove that you have a certification.

For example take a look at this job opening for Virgin Active below:

do I need a licence to teach yoga

They require you to have an accredited 200 hour teaching qualification. We will talk some more about accreditation later on, but what you need to know for sure is that you will need a recognised certification to teach yoga legitimately.

Not only that, but like we mentioned before, you won’t be able to have any sort of authority if you go solely freelance with no brand to help you build some kind of reputation. It is non-negotiable because without it, you will be putting your clients and your own self at risk.

Level 4 Diploma in Yoga Teaching

As well as the minimum requirement of a level 3 in yoga teaching, you can also benefit from a level 4 diploma in yoga teaching that can see you choose a discipline in a particular type of yoga style.

Though this isn’t obligatory to find work to become a yoga teacher, it can be highly beneficial when going up against other candidates for employment opportunities.

As well as that, some jobs may be asking for a specific discipline. For example, below you can see a job opening for David Lloyd gyms and they do specify particular areas of discipline:

what licences do I need to teach yoga

This is an attractive addition to your CV and it is something preferable to have under your belt for more prestigious employers, like David Lloyd Leisure.

Besides the qualification label you can have from this, you can also begin to feel even more confident in your practice and offer a more informative and specific kind of yoga teaching. It is definitely worth investing into and boosting your credibility.

What Should You Look for From a Yoga Course

what kind of licence do i need to teach yoga

So you know that you need to get qualified, but what exactly are you looking for within a yoga course?

Initially, you need to look for a yoga course that has over 200 hours of training. This is the minimum requirement for any job role so ensure that this is your first step in what to look for.

In addition to this, you want to make sure that you’re looking for courses that cover everything that you need not just the basics, but delving into practical work too.

These are all important aspects that can help you find the correct course for you, there is a reason diplomas are so popular in this case as it gets you where you need to be in the most direct and succinct way possible.

Before You Go…

Hopefully you feel confident in going forward with your career in the yoga teaching industry and know what licenses you may need.

The good news is, we have a simple guide right here.

If you love an intense workout and want to inject this into your career, you may be interested in how to become a HIIT instructor. If so, we have all you need to know, including:

Before we begin, if you’re looking to become a HIIT instructor, read about our Personal Trainer Diploma or learn about our other fitness courses by downloading our free course prospectus here.

What Does the Role Involve?

how to become a HIIT instructor

So when you become a HIIT instructor, what will your day-to-day look like?

In order to be instructing any kind of fitness class, including HIIT, you can expect to be fulfilling the general duties of a fitness instructor. This could include of course teaching classes, but also some general responsibilities.

Some of these responsibilities could include:

  • Cleaning the gym / studio you work at
  • Conducting inductions for new gym members
  • Help members to stay safe in the gym
  • Hold the responsibility of first aid if necessary
  • Basic administrative tasks if necessary

Whether you’re teaching classes or completing these tasks in between teaching, this is the general overview of what kind of jobs you could expect to take on, particularly if you work in a commercial gym.

This would be a face-to-face role, meaning that you should be confident and have the personality traits that you need to succeed and make members feel comfortable. Before you become a HIIT instructor you may find it useful to gain some experience as a fitness instructor since this could help you to build confidence and meet potential clients before holding classes.

This is generally the route that you would take regardless, but ensuring that you have this experience prior to planning your classes and starting is a good way to do some self-development and build up the right attitude and confidence.

How Much do HIIT Instructors Earn?

become a HIIT instructor

You are probably wondering how much you could earn before we go through how to become a certified HIIT instructor. So, we’ve done the hard work for you, here are the salary expectations based on our research.

There are a couple of different routes to becoming a HIIT instructor, so with that in mind, you can expect to earn different levels of income depending on the route you end up choosing.

First, let’s take a look at the employed route.

Getting Employed as a HIIT/ Fitness Instructor at a Commercial Gym

Dedicated HIIT instructor roles are more rare to come by, since HIIT classes are usually one among a variety of fitness classes provided at commercial gyms. This means that it is typical for HIIT instructors to also teach other classes or personal train clients within the other working hours of the week.

For example, commercial gyms like PureGym or even the higher end commercial gyms like Virgin Active have positions for ‘fitness instructors’ this could see you teaching HIIT among other classes too.

The salary for these commercial fitness instructor roles are typically at an hourly rate, you can see below what Indeed’s data on salaries say about gyms like DW and Virgin Active:

HIIT instructor courses

As you can see, there is an average hourly wage of approximately £25.00 per hour across the large gym chains. This is a healthy hourly wage, it is more than double the national average and so while you may not be working as many hours you wouldn’t be losing out.

Getting Employed as a Freelance HIIT Instructor

On the other hand, a more popular approach when becoming a HIIT instructor is to take the steps to become a freelance personal trainer with a business of your own.

Of course, you’ll need to be appropriately qualified in Level 3 Personal Training, which we’ll touch on in the next section.

This could lead you to hold your own classes in your own studio space rather than being under the orders of a commercial gym with a capped salary of £25.00 an hour.

For example, if you build a loyal client base, you could rent a studio space on the likes of UKTherapyRooms once, twice or three times a week depending on the demand.

HIIT instructor courses uk

Similarly, you could also choose to operate out of a commercial gym as a freelancer and pay your rent from the income that you earn from your clientele. Or, you can work hours in the gym to ‘pay your rent’ while you can then keep your total profits from your HIIT sessions.

During this time, you could charge clients to maximise your net profit overall.

HIIT classes, (subjective to where you’re located) can range upwards of £10 a class, in some more quiet areas you may find prices for around £6 / £8 a class. In order to earn more than you would hourly in a commercial gym you would only need around three clients through the door!

With an average class size being around 15 or more people, you could be earning upwards of £90 – £150 an hour for your HIIT classes.

That in mind, holding HIIT classes can be a hugely rewarding career prospect, particularly when paired with other roles within the fitness industry. If this sounds like something for you, let’s find out how to become a HIIT instructor in 3 simple steps.

For some more helpful resources on getting into the fitness instructing industry, head over to these articles below:

How to Become a HIIT Instructor: The Two Essential Steps

HIIT instructor course uk

So, once you have established if the role is for you, you need to gain your HIIT instructor certification (UK) which is what step 1 is all about.

Step 1: Make Sure You’re Qualified

You first need to get the correct qualification before you can apply. In order to teach any kind of fitness class you will need a minimum of a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification.

This grants you the ability to teach any fitness classes and this includes HIIT. This is the minimum to work in gyms and teach classes, for example, take a look at this job advertisement below for a fitness instructor:

HIIT instructor course uk based

As you can see, as a gym instructor it is your job to instruct classes as well as other responsibilities and to do this you need a minimum of a level 2 to be qualified for the job.

It is within this job role you can teach a range of different classes, you can see from gym to gym what classes they offer on their websites to see if HIIT is on the list.

Something to consider however is that many are indeed HIIT classes with different names, like this scheduled class at PureGym:

HIIT instructor course uk

As you can see, this class called “burn it” is simply a HIIT class. As a fitness instructor, you would be qualified to teach this and would be expected to as an employee.

You don’t need a specific HIIT instructor qualification to teach these classes, like we said, you only actually need a level 2 in fitness instructing qualification!

Some employers may ask you to hold a Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training but isn’t a requirement that’s set in stone across the industry. Instead, you’ll typically see this advertised on job applications as a ‘desirable’ quality for candidates to have.

The Level 3 PT Diploma will also allow you to work with clients on a one-to-one basis, meaning you can offer personalised HIIT sessions tailored specifically for them.

Essentially, if you become a personal trainer, you have much more opportunity to build your class base and make more money all the while. So while it isn’t a requirement, it is certainly desirable.

Step 2: Finding a Job as a Qualified HIIT Instructor

HIIT instructor certification

After that, you should begin searching for a job as a qualified HIIT instructor. The best job openings to look for are general holistic fitness instructor jobs.

These are going to grant you more opportunity to teach a range of classes and often, in commercial gyms, you can work as a fitness instructor and a personal trainer.

So, this is why specific HIIT instructor courses are relatively unnecessary, since the jobs that allow you to earn a good income are the fitness instructors and personal training vacancies.

One of the most popular business structures within commercial gyms is to work 12 or more hours a week depending on the gym, within this time you can teach HIIT classes among other classes and responsibilities too.

Outside of this, you can use the pay that you earn from these hours to pay for your rent in the gym to train personal training clients. This gives you the best of both worlds and is what we would strongly recommend for a successful future.

Below, you can see the kind of job opening to look for:

how to get a HIIT instructor certification

As you can see, they do state that you need to be working towards your level 3 personal trainer qualification to be eligible for the role. So while for private gyms it is desirable to have a personal trainer certification and not a necessity, double check for each job role that it isn’t a requirement.

This isn’t the case for every job, so don’t worry if you only have the level 2!

Once you know what type of role you’re looking for, where do you look for it?

You should use job boards like:

  • Indeed
  • Glassdoor
  • Google Jobs

As well as that, however, you should look directly at the source. For example, think about what gyms you want to work for. We have linked some of the careers pages for the most popular gyms in the UK to help you get started finding relevant job openings:

These can always be a great first point of contact, you can see relevant openings and often you will avoid the task of applying for job vacancies that have already expired.

Be sure to check these regularly or where possible, set up alerts for your emails.

Is There a Guaranteed Way to Become a Celebrity PT?

how to become a celebrity personal trainer

In short, no, there are no complete guarantees, given the niche client base, there are fewer opportunities to amass clients than if you operate with the general public. However, there are ways that you can certainly increase the likelihood of this being your career path.

Below, we have 6 methods to increase your chances of getting celebrity clients on board, or at the very least getting your business up to the level of prestige in which celebrity clients will endorse your personal training services.

Methods of Enlisting Celebrity Clients

#1 Get Qualified as a Level 4 PT

how to be a celebrity personal trainer

In order to become a personal trainer that has more and does more than your average PT, you’re going to need higher qualifications and background.

One way to do this is by separating yourself from the ‘norm’ of a level 3 in personal training and taking it up a notch to a level 4. A level 4 in personal training can help you develop your niche which is what can make the difference between you and another PT.

For instance, you could choose from the likes of these level 4 courses to demonstrate the areas in which you specialise and excel:

As you can see, each of these courses have a level of specificity to them that can help set you apart from the masses. Something that you need to remember, is that to move up the ladder as a personal trainer you must first have completed your level 3 diploma in personal training

become a celebrity personal trainer

You should ensure that it is internationally recognised by looking out for relevant endorsing bodies such as CIMSPA. This can help to make sure that if you’re looking to move to places where some of the most successful celeb PT’s reside like L.A for example, your qualifications will always be recognised.

Showing that you have a higher level of qualification and knowledge behind you simply makes you more fit for the job. Plus, since you’re going to be charging higher prices for celebrity clients, you need to justify this price point by having the relevant qualifications and extensive background.

#2 Seek Employment at High End Gyms

how much does a celebrity personal trainer make

Another way to build your way up to the bigger clients is to get some experience in prestigious fitness centres and gyms. Nobody will be able to walk into a celebrity fitness role without any relevant experience.

With that in mind, you should do more than just seek any experience. Aim high, look for job openings in more prestigious gyms, in the UK some of these include:

  • David Lloyd Leisure club
  • Virgin Active
  • Lanserhof at Mayfair
  • Barry’s

You should gain experience in a mixture of clubs, some that boast exclusivity and luxury like wellness centres such as Lanserhof and alike. While also gaining some experience in international gyms and classes like Virgin Active and Barry’s.

This can help to show potential employers that not only have you worked in private companies that obtain a high-end luxury feel, but also the international gyms that while still boast a high-end climate, they also may be more familiar with.

celebrity fitness personal trainer salary

You can do your research to find out where celebrities often train in your area. Check out fitness influencers and celebrities of the calibre that you wish to train and see the style of gyms that they train in – this is where you want to gain your experience.

Not only does this provide you with valuable experience, but it is also a good place to network and to start to establish professional relationships that could get you the clients you want.

Networking is incredibly important, you need to get your name out there and show the right people why you have what it takes to train the big names.

#3 Contact Celebrity Agencies and Managers to Offer Your Services

how do i become a celeb pt

One of the key ways to bridge the gap between you and potential celebrity clientele is to utilise celebrity agencies.

These agencies can help you to offer your services to the right people and can be the best chance at gaining this level of client base particularly if you’re somewhat new to the industry.

So where do you begin?

First off, if you have a particular celebrity in mind that you want to train, a good idea is trying to reach them through their agency or manager depending on the size of the celeb. You could look out on the likes of their social media and ask yourself things such as:

  • Are they clearly into fitness?
  • Have they expressed that they want to hire a trainer?
  • Have they started to post their workouts and gym trips more?

Try to get a lot from a little and act at the right time. For example, if they’ve asked in their stories any questions about getting started with fitness or training, it might be a good time to contact their agent.

For example, celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson who trains the likes of Khloe Kardashian says this below about how he gained his clients:

how to become a trusted celebrity PT

As you can see, the connection is typically made through trusted sources, like their agent or management. So, rather than directing your credentials and portfolio to the celebrity themself, keep it professional and address it to their management team.

The last thing you want to do is have your application come across like a fan letter, instead you should present yourself throughout a professional portfolio and personal trainer CV. This should include the following factors:

  • Your credentials: Level 3, 4 PT courses and any other relevant certifications.
  • Direct your cover letter and CV to the celebrity agency directly
  • Tell the management what you can do for that celebrity and why you chose to contact them.

You should be including your social media handles and any relevant content like your personal trainer website and professional LinkedIn so they can have a dig around your professional background.

#4 Make Sure You’re in as Best Shape Possible

how do I become a PT for celebrities

There is always conversation surrounding the topic of whether you need to be fit to be a personal trainer or not, and this discussion will continue since there are various factors that can affect the answer.

However, if you want to become a celebrity personal trainer, there are certain factors that may mean more than they would when compared to a regular level personal trainer.

Celebrities want to get in good shape, the best way to do that is to show them the motivation by being the motivation. This is a common theme among celebrity personal trainers, often there is a particular level of aesthetic that comes along with it.

We put together just some of the most famous celebrities including Kim and Kourtney Kardashian and Mark Wallberg’s trainers so you can see what their physique looks like:

celebrity PTs

You may notice that there is a common feature among these trainers, they’re all in incredible shape.

Trainers who have shown their transformations can also have a much bigger impact on gaining attraction. For example, the female trainer that you can see within the aforementioned image showing her story is what bagged her the role as Kim Kardashian’s trainer – you can see below the story of how this unfolded:

how to become an a list celebrity PT

By showing your own fitness journey and how you got to or are working toward your dream physique and shape, you could inspire the right celebrity and get the job that you want!

#5 Market Yourself as a ‘Celebrity Exclusive PT’

how do I become a personal trainer for celebrities

The celebrity fitness personal trainer salary is so high because there is a level of exclusivity.

Once you become a celebrity trainer and are working with another calibre of trainers, you’re setting the bar extremely high for yourself. This is how you can then market yourself to be above the rest and market yourself among the “Celebrity Exclusive Personal Trainer”.

You should be using phrases such as ‘celebrity PT ‘or ‘celeb exclusive PT ‘in places like your Instagram bio to establish your professional identity as part of your branding plan, like this PT does:

how do I become a personal trainer for a celebrity

This exclusivity ultimately makes you more attractive to agents looking for a PT for their client.

You should also be thinking about where you want to market yourself.

Think about who you want to work for, what kind of celebrity it is and where they are located.

Many of the big stars are in the likes of the capital cities around the world, as well as key hot spots like L.A for instance. So with that in mind, it would make sense to network within these places by using digital tools like LinkedIn and other social media platforms to do your research on the most relevant agencies in those areas.

This can help you get in touch with the right line of people and start the ball rolling on networking. After you have established where you want to market yourself, how do you go about it?

Utilising business cards and distributing them to potential connections can be a good way to do this subtly. You don’t want to overwhelm them with content so starting small can make a big difference.

You should also have a portfolio that markets your expertise, this is where you can mention things such as:

  • Your qualifications: for example, you could introduce your services as “Level 4 qualified personal trainer, specialising in lower back pain management”
  • Past celebrities you have worked with: E.g “Kris Jenner’s former personal trainer”
  • Where you have worked: If you have worked in any prestigious places or organisations you can include this to show your level of expertise.
  • Testimonials and your own personal fitness journey: Show how you can do the same for them.

Ensure you’re using relevant marketing strategies, avoid mixing up marketing with a serious CV but don’t make the advertising so ‘desperate’ that it doesn’t scream exclusivity. You must find the correct balance between the two.

#6 Use Word of Mouth Marketing to Gain More Celebrity Clients

how do I become a personal trainer for a celebrity

We’ve reiterated the importance of networking throughout, and this is because it is among the most effective ways to gain clients since it is how you build trust and get reliable clientele.

Getting your first initial celebrity client is the more difficult part, but once you get beyond this point word of mouth starts to do the hard work for you, and so long as you’re providing a 10/10 service, there is no reason why they wouldn’t recommend you to their other celebrity connections.

You may notice that it is rare that celebrity PT’s would only have one client, they often have some celebrities within the same realm of popularity too; for example, take Aaron Williamson.

how do I become a personal trainer for a celebrity UK

He has worked as the personal trainer of huge names including Sylvester Stallone, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Jamie Foxx. These celebrities are huge internationally and of course have masses of contacts so gaining one can be the key to unlocking the rest.

Similarly, you could come across the right people that could get you in long-term roles. For example, training for film studios or actor agencies for when actors need to get in shape within a time frame. This is common in the industry and with the right motivation you could be that person for the job.

This may take a while and it’s by no means easy, you need to build your reputation, market yourself correctly and simply give potential clients a reason to trust you. But, when you do, this is going to act as one of the main driving forces that will give you the title of a “celebrity personal trainer”.

Benefits of Becoming a Celebrity PT

become a celebrity personal trainer

While some of the main benefits of being a personal trainer in general always apply, there are some things that we must mention as they make the journey of how to be a celebrity personal trainer that bit more worthwhile.

Celebrity PT Salaries Can Be High

become a celebrity personal trainer

First and foremost, your main question when doing your research might be – how much does a celebrity personal trainer make?

Simply put, more is expected of you and thus, the more you are paid.

That being said, take a look below at some celebrity personal trainers, who they train and how much it is said that they earn annually.

  • Jono Castano: Trains celebrities such as Rebel Wilson and is said to have a net worth of around $3 million.
  • Jeanette Jenkins: Trained celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Serena Williams and has an estimated net worth of up to $9 million!
  • Danielle Peazer: Trained Celebrities such as LittleMix girl band and has an estimated net worth of approximately $1.5 million.

Keep in mind that if you reach a particular level of celebrity endorsement yourself, you will start to gain attraction from people on social media. If this happens and you gain a big following, you could soon be getting paid for just posting on the likes of Instagram alone.

There is more than just one stream of income when you get to the higher levels which is why climbing the ladder can come with a hugely satisfactory salary.

Becoming a Celebrity PT Can Be Glamorous Lifestyle

where do I start to become a celebrity personal trainer

Following on from what we just mentioned about gaining your own level of attraction, there are some things that come along with the life of a celebrity personal trainer.

You could find yourself flying and travelling with your clients and you could potentially find yourself injected into a new world that is much more exclusive than the public life you may have been used to.

For example, we mentioned earlier the celebrity personal trainer Melissa Alcantara. She had a huge transformation and now lives life lavishly with her new friend and client Kim Kardashian. She’s even been seen on episodes of Keeping up with the Kardashians and seems to be training Kim and sometimes her sisters in their huge Hollywood homes.

This isn’t to say that it’s easy, she worked hard to get there but there is no reason why other celebrities can’t also spot a special streak within you and take a chance on you as their trainer.

This could have the potential to catapult you into a new world where you can make bigger career moves and ultimately, bigger money.
