What Should You Consider Before Becoming A Mobile Personal Trainer?

image of another woman surrounded by question marks

Before becoming a mobile personal trainer, there are several things to consider. First, you need to acknowledge that you’re essentially launching your own business and will therefore be self-employed.

Running your own business comes with many responsibilities, including:

  • Registering with the government
  • Filing taxes
  • Paying National Insurance contributions
  • Securing business insurance

Building up your own business is no easy feat, you need to be committed, driven and willing to work hard so you can earn a liveable income. This can only be achieved by having an effective personal training marketing strategy to help you develop strong sales skills to secure clients.

You’ll also need to consider the overhead costs for equipment, fuel, marketing, and insurance to help keep your business sustainable and profitable.

One way you could launch your mobile personal trainer business without creating financial uncertainty is by working part-time in a gym simultaneously. This will provide you with a regular income whilst you build up your client base.

As you gain more clients, you’ll be able to dedicate more time to your business and transition from your part-time position. OriGym’s guide to becoming a part-time personal trainer can help you learn more about this type of employment.

How To Become A Mobile Personal Trainer: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

image of a mobile personal trainer

There are six crucial steps you need to follow before becoming a mobile personal trainer. These will make sure you have the knowledge and experience to pursue a rewarding career!

Step 1: Get Qualified As A Personal Trainer

mobile personal trainer holding qualified certified

No matter what capacity you wish to work in as a personal trainer, you will first need to complete a Level 3 Personal Trainer Diploma. This qualification combines both:

A Level 3 Personal Trainer Diploma is essential for fulfilling this role, as it teaches you how to create and deliver bespoke workout programmes to meet a clients’ specific goals.

When choosing the best diploma to enrol on it’s essential to choose a qualification that is Ofqual-approved and CIMSPA endorsed. These credentials tell employers that you have been trained to the necessary industry standards and are legally recognised as a PT.

You can explore the range of OriGym’s personal trainer courses here – All of which meet the criteria discussed above!

Step 2: Work At A Gym To Get Experience As A Personal Trainer

image of a personal trainer with male client

Technically, nothing is stopping you from starting a mobile personal trainer business immediately after you’ve qualified. However, we would recommend gaining experience working at a gym/fitness centre first.

By gaining at least six to twelve months of experience working as a personal trainer in a gym, you will better understand how to run one-to-one sessions, create tailored programmes, and sell pricing packages to clients.

By working in a gym as a personal trainer, you’ll also benefit from working alongside established fitness professionals who can provide you with valuable professional advice and insight into the industry.

An example of a job advertisement for a personal trainer can be found below, which clearly shows how your roles and responsibilities when employed in this capacity:

So once you’re qualified as a personal trainer, don’t be afraid to find employment at a reputable gym or fitness centre, as this experience can help you launch your mobile personal trainer business!

Step 3: Create a Mobile Personal Trainer Business Plan

A busy work desk with laptop, coffee and paperwork

Having a good mobile personal trainer business plan can help increase your chances of success. Here you will clearly outline your goals, business strategy, who your target audience is and how you’re going to attract them to your business.

All great business plans should always include:

  • Executive Summary: A brief overview highlighting key details and goals
  • Business Description: Overview of the business and its mission, history, products/services
  • Market Analysis: Identifying market trends in the industry, competitors, and assessment of your business strengths and weaknesses
  • Organisation and Management: Description of organisational structure e.g. key management and team member roles.
  • List of products: Information about your products and services, and what they offer clients
  • Marketing and Sales: Outlines marketing and sales strategies, pricing, and sales projections
  • Financial Projections: Presents income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements

You can learn more about writing an effective business plan by reading our article, ‘7 Simple Steps for Writing a Personal Trainer Business Plan’.

Step 4: Understand Your Legal Commitments As A Personal Trainer

After writing your business plan, next, you’ll need to understand your legal obligations and commitments before launching your mobile personal training business.

This ensures the safety of your clients and protects you from any liability claims. It can also help you decide:

  • If you want to register as a sole trader or limited company
  • What insurance do you require
  • Whether you need to be first aid qualified

One piece of advice we stress to people looking to start their own PT business is to hire an accountant. They can save you time and money by making sure your tax returns are filled out correctly and on time!

You should also ensure that you only offer services that you are qualified to do. For example, if you wish to offer meal plans that are tailored to a client’s specific needs and goals, then you will need to hold a Level 4 Nutrition qualification to do so!

image of a contract

When it comes to training clients, you’ll also need to get them to sign a contract or ‘agreement’. This should include:

  • Your terms and conditions
  • A cancellation policy terms of payments
  • The notice period for rearranging sessions
  • The services clients can expect from you

Whilst working as a mobile personal trainer, you should also get your clients to complete a PAR-Q form before they start training with you. This will highlight any injuries and/or medical conditions that they already have, allowing you to make training adaptations to meet their needs.

Legally, you’ll also have to secure public liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance to financially protect you from any claims.

mobile personal trainer with client

These are essential for any personal trainer and since you’re looking to become a mobile personal trainer, you should also consider getting equipment and personal accident insurance.

Finally, if you plan to run outdoor sessions in a public space, you may need to ensure that you have the correct permissions and licences to do so.

There are circumstances where you’ll require permission from the council for outdoor sessions, mainly for bootcamps. That’s why it’s always good to check with your local council before setting up your business.

Step 5: Secure The Right Personal Training Equipment For Your Business

random items a mobile personal trainer needs

After addressing your legal obligations, you’ll then need to decide which equipment you require for your business.

Remember, you’re not running a business in a gym, so clients aren’t expecting you to bring a van loaded with state-of-the-art equipment. A few basic but multi-functional pieces and some imagination should be more than enough!

Throughout our time as a personal trainer provider, there are common pieces of equipment that we’d recommend you invest in because they’re versatile, these include:

  • Resistance Bands
  • Exercise mats
  • Dumbbells
  • Kettlebells
  • Medicine Balls

So make sure you consider the types of mobile services you want to offer as a PT to purchase the equipment you need!

What Is The Average Salary Of A Mobile Personal Trainer?

Woman holding a bundle of cash

On your journey to becoming a mobile personal trainer, you’ll naturally be curious as to how much you’ll earn in this role.

According to our research, the average salary of a personal trainer in the UK is £27,965 per year.

But if you’re looking for data on the exact earnings of a mobile personal trainer, you can look to those who are currently working in the role for greater insight.

For instance, Jan Gym Buddy, a mobile personal trainer, charges £30.00 for a one-hour mobile PT session:

snapshot of mobile personal trainer prices

If you followed a similar pricing structure and worked 20 hours per week charging the same rate, you could earn £31,200 per year.

But remember, this is only an estimate and as a self-employed individual your earning potential is completely uncapped. For example, you could work 40 hours a week and double this income, or you could use mobile personal training as a side hustle for additional revenue.

Other factors that could influence your potential income include your location as PTs in London typically earn more to offset their higher cost of living.

On top of this, the amount of experience you have will also be a deciding factor as newly qualified individuals won’t earn as much as someone who has worked in the industry for years.

If you’d like to increase this income, you could also offer additional services. For example, if you complete a Level 3 Sports Massage qualification, you can offer injury prevention and rehabilitation treatments as part of your mobile personal trainer services.

Some mobile personal trainers charge more for these additional services. Take a look at Berkshire Fitness & Wellbeing, which charges a premium rate of £50 per hour for their mobile personal trainer sessions.

This means they can earn up to £52,000 a year from 20 hours of work each week, which is £20,000 more than the pieces at Jan Gym:

snapshot of a personal training price list

On top of this, they can also earn even more as they also specialise in Sports Massage Therapy. Take a look at the price of these add-ons below:

image of sports massage therapist prices

This means you earn up to £47,200 a year if you work 20 hours a week as a Sports Massage Therapy if clients booked 90-minute appointments with you.

From both of the examples given in this section, you will be able to see just how varied the salary of a mobile personal trainer can be. With this information, you will be able to conduct competitor research within your local area and price your services accordingly.

How Much Should You Charge For Mobile Personal Training?

man sporting sunglasses holding a bundle of cash

One way to determine how much you should charge as a mobile personal trainer is by making sure you have a business plan as we discussed earlier.

This can help you determine a pricing structure for clients to help you generate enough revenue to be a successful business. You can calculate how much to charge by carrying out a sales forecast and calculating your outgoings.

Carrying out market research and competitor analysis can also help you as a self-employed personal trainer, understand how much to charge to make a profit.

For example, in the section above we did just that directly comparing the prices between Jan Gym Buddy and Berkshire Fitness and Wellbeing.

Don’t forget that compared to working as a regular PT, there are more outgoings to consider such as travelling from client to client and purchasing or renting your equipment.

This means that your prices should be slightly higher than average to help you generate a profit!

3 Things To Consider Before You Start Marketing Your Business

If you want to succeed in the fitness industry as a mobile personal trainer then you need to dedicate some time to your marketing strategy. To help you with this process, we’ve provided 3 useful tips that all mobile personal trainers should implement.

#1 Create Your Brand To Make Your Mobile PT Business Visible

image of a woman holding a laptop

Before you start promoting your business, you need a clear brand image and a strong business name. This will help your business stand out in the fitness market by creating a memorable identity.

Consistency is key to creating a good brand image. You should consider which brand colours and logos are best to use across all of your marketing communications & platforms!

No Limits Boxing Club in Liverpool does this effectively as evident from the screenshot below. Their colour scheme and logo are consistent across all of their social media pages and their website respectively:

image of social media page for no limits

Brand consistency helps potential clients see these visual signifiers and instantly recognise your business before even remembering your name.

Similar to No Limits, you should use the same colours and logos across all of your marketing communications, whether that’s:

  • A business card
  • Website
  • Branded piece of equipment – e.g. T-Shirt
  • Social media account
  • Post on social media

The name of your mobile personal training franchise could be as simple as your [Your Name] Mobile Personal Training but don’t be afraid to get creative and come up with something unique to capture people’s attention, just remember to keep it professional.

You should also check that your name is available to use on social media channels, as a website domain and isn’t trademarked.

The last thing you must consider is branding the equipment and clothing you’ll use to help promote familiarity with your clients between physical and digital spaces.

#2 Develop Your Unique Selling Point (USP)

image of a persoanl trainer with client

After creating and strengthening your unique brand, you’ll need to develop a Unique Selling Point (USP). So, think about what sets you apart from all the other personal trainers out there.

If there aren’t many competing mobile personal trainers in your area, your USP could simply be the fact you are a mobile personal trainer in an underrepresented area.

Evolution Fitness and Health’s Unique Selling Point, for instance, is that they offer Kickboxing fitness alongside their mobile personal training:

Snapshot of a mobile personal trainers services

Recognising their Unique Selling Point, Evolution Fitness makes their services accessible to people looking for mobile classes whilst also giving them the option to attend group boxing classes if they want to socialise with others. This is something you would need to identify with your USP to set yourself apart from your competitors.

You could, for example, specialise in a niche area of fitness and offer that as a USP. Becoming qualified as a Sports Massage Therapist or earning a Lower Back Pain Management qualification can help enhance your Unique Selling Point.

#3 Think About Your Target Audience

image of a bow hitting a bullseye

To establish who your target audience is to establish your USP, for this very reason it’s important to carry out market research to target your most desirable clients:

Here are some good ways you can carry out marketing research, including:

  • Research competitors to understand their pricing structure, target audience, and USP
  • Distribute surveys and questionnaires to your intended target audience
  • Carrying out mystery shops (attending other PT’s sessions)

For example, if you wanted to offer mobile running coaching as a USP, you would need to consider the people who would want to use this service and how best to attract them to your business.

You could ask yourself, whether it’s best to offer group sessions to make people accountable and more likely to attend.  When it comes to direct marketing, you could advertise your services on Facebook to people who are in specific running groups such as local fun runs, 5ks or park runs.

It’s also important to make sure you keep your target audience in mind when carrying out market research which includes how you brand your business, set prices and your operating hours.

image of a woman exercising

Good market research will also show the ideal training times for the target audience, and allow you to adjust your hours accordingly.

For example, you might want to offer mobile personal training sessions for elderly people to help them build their strength and increase their mobility.

Through running a survey, you also find most people in this age category would prefer to exercise in the morning, allowing you to use this information to advertise your services for this time of the day.

In the same way, if you approach your business with a high pricing strategy without doing any research into the affluence of your target audience, you could be charging too much more than your clients can afford or seriously underselling yourself.

Just remember, carrying out sufficient research and adjusting your marketing strategy accordingly will save you time and resources, and help you to get as many clients as possible.

How To Market Your Mobile Personal Training Business

woman holding phone with heart and thumb emojis

After completing your market research, creating your brand image, and deciding on your target audience, you should be ready to start marketing your mobile personal training services.

Below are the three best ways to get the word out there about your business, let’s dive right in!

#1 Get Involved With Social Media Marketing

man and a woman giving thumbs up

When you start thinking of the different ways you could market your mobile personal training business, social media is probably the first thing that comes to mind.

Marketing on social media is mostly free and allows you to reach a wide audience, so it would be a mistake not to set up business pages on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

As mentioned earlier, it’s important to ensure consistency in your brand name, logo, and colours across all your social media accounts. But you should also consider what and where you are posting!

On Rebalance Coach’s Instagram account, they’ve chosen to post instructive videos on how to perform exercises correctly, establishing themselves as an authoritative voice and providing a taster of the exercises future clients could be performing during their workout sessions with them:

snapshot of mobile personal trainer social media

We’d recommend you post similar content that offers value to your audience that doesn’t involve directly selling your services such as training advice or motivational tips.

It’s important to note the green colour scheme they’ve opted for and the profile picture of their trainer to make the page seem more personable. These branding choices feature on their website and other social media accounts, making them more recognisable to users.

You’ll also want to use your social media accounts to promote the services you provide. For example, one way to do this would be to post progression pictures and testimonials from your existing clients.

Tools such as Canva are a great way to create professional-looking graphics without having to pay for a graphic designer.

#2 Create A Google Business Profile

image of light bulb surrounded by people and speech bubbles

Creating a Google Business Profile is often overlooked by fitness professionals. Having one means when a user searches ‘mobile personal trainers near me’, all local mobile personal trainers with an account appear just below paid Google Ads but above the organic results.

These results will show users your business name, location, and contact number, and direct them to your Google reviews.

Here’s an example:

snapshot of personal trainers near me you in Liverpool

The great news is that creating a Google Business Profile is completely free and easy to set up and as you can see from the example above, there aren’t currently any mobile PTs advertising marketing utilising this tool in Liverpool – we can bet that many other cities are the same.

So make sure you set up one to set yourself apart from your competitors!

#3 Start Up A Referral Scheme!

man and a woman high fiving each other

Once you’ve established a good rapport with your existing client base, starting a referral scheme is a brilliant way to bring newcomers into your business.

A referral scheme is a great marketing tool that rewards your current clients when they refer new clients to your services.

You simply ask your clients if they have any friends or family that would be interested in training with you, offering them a reward if that friend or family member later becomes a client.

There are many things you can offer through a referral scheme, including:

  • Free personal trainer sessions
  • Discounted memberships
  • Cash rewards or gift cards
  • Free Merchandise

You could offer these as part of your referral scheme at 4 different stages of working as a mobile personal trainer, these include:

  • When You Launch Your Mobile Personal Training Business initial interest and excitement among clients
  • When Your Business Achieves Milestones-offering incentives on business anniversaries can help attract new clients from your current client base
  • Client Milestone Events-promoting a referral scheme when clients achieve their fitness goals can help incentivise them to refer your services to others
  • During different seasons-You could introduce seasonal referral schemes in January, helping clients bring in friends seeking fitness boosts for the new year

Remember, you’re more likely to get new clients from current clients who recommend you to friends and family.

This is because they already have trust through their relationships, making it more likely for them to follow up on these recommendations to hire you as a PT!

What Are The Benefits Of Mobile Personal Training?

image of a mobile personal trainer giving a thumbs up

Now you have an overall understanding of what you should consider before becoming a mobile personal trainer, your earning potential, and how to market yourself, let’s now explore some of the perks that come with the role.

#1 You Can Get To Manage Your Schedule

image of a calander

As we’ve stated multiple times throughout this article, as a self-employed mobile personal trainer you decide when you want to work.

You won’t have to wait for gyms to open or worry about when it’s going to close, you can create a schedule that’s entirely flexible to both you and your clients’ needs. This allows you to work as many or as few hours as you deem necessary!

For example, you could choose to work a full-time 40-hour week or operate on a more flexible schedule using the role as a side hustle requiring only 10-hour working weeks.

#2 Your Earning Potential is Unlimited!

image of a female mobile personal trainer

When you become a self-employed mobile personal trainer, you have the advantage of an unlimited salary! This relates to our previous point, as when running your own business you will have direct control over:

  • Your working hours
  • How much you charge
  • The number of clients you take on

In this role, you won’t be confined to working in one set location earning a fixed salary. Instead, you can expand your reach and earn a significantly higher income!

More information on this particular benefit can be found in an article discussing how to become a self-employed personal trainer.

#3 You Have Complete Creative Freedom

image of a mobille phone

Becoming a mobile personal trainer will open a whole new world of professional creative freedom!

When operating in this role your main responsibility will be to create bespoke workout programmes for your clients. This allows you to take their needs into account and create a unique plan!

On top of this, as this is your own business you will be able to decide:

  • What demographic of client you want to work with
  • What kind of training do you wish to specialise in
  • What equipment do you bring to the sessions

For example, as you’ll likely be training clients in their homes you could incorporate unconventional pieces of equipment such as chairs, tables, and chairs, to help clients achieve their fitness goals.

You could also decide that you want to train clients who don’t feel confident enough to go to the gym and brand this as your USP.

Essentially, as a mobile personal trainer, you have complete freedom to shape your business to your liking.

#4 Breaking Down Barriers

group of people motivating each other in a huddle

One of the best advantages of becoming a mobile personal trainer is that you can break down a lot of the barriers that people tend to have that prevent them from exercising.

The mobile aspect of your work enables you to reach individuals whom personal trainers confined to gyms cannot, thus expanding your potential client base. For example, individuals who cite lack of time, transportation, or disposable income as reasons for not training with a personal trainer in a gym setting.

As a mobile personal trainer, it is your job to reach such people with your marketing campaigns and branding and convince them to invest in you to improve their fitness.

You should maybe think about addressing the typical barriers to exercise within your marketing materials, for example, your social media posts, as they directly address the fears and apprehensions of many of your future clients.

Mobile personal trainer wearing OriGym branded gear

Examples of these barriers, and how you would help overcome them as a mobile PT, include:

  • Lack of time: Many clients use a lack of free time as a reason for not working out. Mobile personal training frees up some time by removing the need for the client to travel to and from the gym!
  • Low income: Traveling to the gym is not only a barrier in terms of time, but also cost. Rather than your client paying to travel to the gym, for a gym membership, and then a PT session, you can lessen the cost by just having them pay for your sessions.
  • No childcare: A common barrier for some clients, particularly new parents, is being unable to arrange childcare whilst they’re at the gym. With mobile personal training, clients don’t have to leave their homes, allowing them to keep an eye on their little ones.
  • Lack of motivation: We’ve all been there, not wanting to leave the comfort of our house to go to the gym – especially when it’s cold and dark outside Imagine how much easier it would be if the gym could come to you – that’s where the benefits of mobile personal training come in!
  • Confidence issues and intimidation: Many people feel intimidated in the gym environment or feel that everyone is watching them. By offering home personal training, you can remove these privacy concerns.

What The Experts Have to Say About Mobile Personal Training…

two men smiling in fitness career

Just before we go, we thought you might like to hear the advice of a seasoned mobile PT. We spoke to Birmingham-based Personal Trainer Simon King, and he shared his top 3 pieces of advice for anybody starting in the industry:

The most important quality of a mobile personal trainer

Clients tell me that timekeeping is so important. Word does spread and your reputation can become damaged.

When it comes to mobile training vs PT in the gym…

I think new trainers should be encouraged to work together. An option is to rent a room together in a commercial building and take it from there. It has the potential to be highly successful, and there are none of the disadvantages involved that come with commercial gyms.

Get Qualified

When looking to further expand their knowledge and expertise with Level 4 qualifications or CPD courses, I would advise trainers to be very careful when looking for a training provider. They may look amazing, but underneath they may not be what they seem. Do your research and ensure that the courses are fully accredited/certified by an awarding body, for example, Focus Awards.

As with any job role, becoming a mobile personal trainer is so much more than just qualifications and practical experience. You need to have certain qualities too, which include:

About the Zumba Instructor Job Role

Become a Zumba instructor

When you become a Zumba instructor your main responsibility will be to plan classes and guide attendees through aerobic style dance workouts, combining the brand’s signature choreography and music.

Using moves and routines approved by the Zumba® brand, instructors will choreograph both low and high intensity workouts to help students lose weight, build muscle, and improve their overall health.

Typically, when becoming a Zumba instructor you’ll work on a freelance or self-employed basis. An example of a job ad can be found below, in which Virgin Active clearly states they are looking for a candidate who can teach both branded Zumba® classes, as well as general dance workouts:

Become a zumba instructor with virgin active

There are many benefits to working freelance, the primary one being that your earning potential is completely uncapped in this capacity. Without the restrictions of set working hours, you could earn a significantly higher salary than those in fixed contracts!

Similarly, working freelance allows you to earn money around other commitments. For example, if you’re a full-time student you could still work as a Zumba instructor in your free time!

With all these benefits in mind, let’s now discuss the average Zumba instructor salary in the UK, to give you a better idea of what you could earn in this role!

How Much Do Zumba Instructors Earn?

Zumba instructor teaching classes

According to Glassdoor, the average salary of a Zumba instructor is listed as £27,519 based on nearly 300 examples provided by the site’s users.

Salary of a Zumba Instructor

When looking at these figures, be aware that many Zumba instructors increase their income by taking other fitness classes, especially when starting out and growing their classes.

Additionally, when using sites such as Glassdoor and Indeed you should consider that the statistics they provide are calculated from data collected from their users. Therefore, they are reflective of the site and not the industry.

In truth, the average salary of a Zumba instructor isn’t as easy to summarise as a person’s earnings could be affected by several factors, such as the amount of experience they have. For example, someone who is newly qualified won’t be earning as much as those who have worked in the industry for years.

Become a zumba instructor with experience

Likewise, location can also influence a Zumba instructor’s salary in the UK. For example, those who work in London will likely earn a higher wage than anyone else as they will often charge more for each class.

Therefore,  Zumba instructor salary per class will be higher in London than other parts of the UJ. This is exemplified below where you can see instructors in the capital charge anywhere between £10 – £20, where as those in Liverpool charge an average of £5:

Zumba instructor salary per class

This ‘increased’ salary typically happens to offset the higher cost of living in London, as outgoings such as rent and electricity are typically more expensive than anywhere else in the UK.

How Does a Zumba Instructor’s Salary Compare to Other Jobs in the Fitness Industry?

According to Glassdoor, the average salary for a Zumba Instructor role is estimated to be £27,519:

Salary of a Zumba Instructor

Keep in mind the stat given above is an average, but the chart clearly shows how a Zumba instructor salary in the UK can range between £21,000 and £36,000.

Let’s compare the salary of a Zumba instructor with some other fitness roles below:

Bar chart comparing zumba instructor salary to other fitness careers

Even if someone is employed as a fitness instructor and is on a salary of £28,560, this can be enhanced even further by working as a freelance Zumba instructor and taking on more hours outside of other fitness classes.

However, each of these roles is a highly lucrative career option, especially if you choose to work freelance. By doing this, you could be earning a significant income working in different capacities throughout the fitness industry.

For example, you could work predominantly as a fitness instructor and teach Zumba classes in your free time to enhance your income.

How to Become a Zumba Instructor: Step-by-Step Guide

#1 – Attend Zumba® Classes

Become a zumba instructor with your own classes

If you’re wondering how to become an instructor in Zumba, the best place to start is to actually attend classes yourself! Here you can build your own passion for the exercise class, as your own enjoyment will be reflected in your teaching style.

Your attendance will also allow you to understand the basic styles and exercises used during the sessions, helping to familiarise you with the different choreography.

Become a zumba instructor with routines

In short, if you have in-depth knowledge and first hand practical experience to draw from, planning and delivering Zumba® will come naturally to you. For example, you will be able to improve your own classes and teaching techniques as you’ll know what students struggle with and what they enjoy!

In addition to this, through attending classes you will also be able to regularly interact with your own instructors. These individuals can provide you with key insight into everything from the qualification process to finding jobs!

#2 – Get Qualified with a Trademarked Zumba Qualification

To become a Zumba instructor in the UK you need to complete the company’s trademarked qualifications. Without this, you will not be legally able to teach the practice and could be held liable should the company make a copyright claim against you.

At a minimum, aspiring instructors will need to complete a Zumba® Basic Level 1 Instructor Training

Those wondering ‘how long does it take to become a Zumba instructor?’ should note the course takes a day to complete.

Become a Zumba Instructor with an online course

Basic Level 1 Training prepares you with the necessary foundation to successfully teach a Zumba® class, as students learn:

  • Steps to four basic rhythms (Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggaeton).
  • How to put these steps together into a song.
  • How to create their first Zumba class.

Once you’ve completed the programme, you will earn your Zumba Basic 1 Certificate of Completion, along with your licence to instruct Zumba.

However, if you’re looking to become a Zumba instructor for older age groups, you will need to undergo additional qualifications such as the Zumba® Jump Start Gold course.

#3 – Get Zumba Instructor Insurance

Zumba instructor insurance

Once qualified it’s crucial you purchase Zumba instructor insurance as you’ll regularly be dealing with the public.

This will protect you against possible claims that may arise from class members who injure themselves after following incorrect advice and guidance or if your property is damaged.

Having Zumba insurance for instructors will essentially provide you with reassurance to provide advice and support to your class attendees, knowing that all parties are protected.

Zumba instructor class insurance

As provided by companies such as Insure4Sport, the main types of Zumba instructor insurance in the UK are:

  • Public Liability & Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • Sports Equipment Insurance

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance for Zumba instructors are similar. The former will cover your legal liability if you’re found to have given negligent advice.

Zumba instructor insurance to cover injury

For Zumba liability insurance, you will be covered if you injure someone while instructing a class.

After you qualify to become a Zumba instructor, we’d also recommend investing in equipment insurance too! This will protect the likes of your speaker and LED lights if they are broken, stolen or damaged!

#4 – How to Find Work as a Zumba Instructor

Become a Zumba dance instructor

If you’ve been questioning ‘how do I become a Zumba instructor’ we’d recommend gaining initial experience working with an employer at the likes of a gym or fitness/community centre –

Remember, these roles will likely be freelance opportunities!

In doing so, you can build your confidence in leading classes and hone your teaching style. Other aspects such as marketing and registering attendees will be left to the employer!

You can find roles such as these on sites such as Indeed or Glassdoor, such as the example from Virgin Active below:

Zumba instructor ad zero hours contract

Many employers will also be lenient when it comes to their ‘desirable’ qualifications, and will typically also consider applicants who have completed a general Level 2 Exercise to Music Course

This means job opportunities aren’t exclusive to just Zumba instructors who have completed the trademarked qualification as you can see below:

Become a Zumba instructor with a ETM qualification

In fact, most employers are looking to employ candidates who are adaptable and can teach many different classes rather than just one niche. For this reason, it will benefit your career to hold both a trademark Zumba and a more general Level 2 ETM qualification.

In doing so, you won’t be limiting yourself when it comes to applying for certain employment opportunities!

The Best Fitness Career to Consider if You Want to Become a Zumba Instructor

Zumba dance instructor class

After learning how to become a Zumba dance instructor you don’t have to solely operate in this job role. This will allow you to explore other employment opportunities in addition to teaching your regular classes.

If you have a passion for dance based exercise classes, you can even apply for similar positions. Typically, in order to teach these sessions employers will ask applicants to hold either a Level 2 Exercise to Music or a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification

This is evident from the following example below, from David Lloyd Clubs:

Become a Zumba instructor with a ETM qualification ad

Having a range of general fitness qualifications means you will be able to pursue these opportunities alongside your general Zumba duties.

As a result, you will be able to earn a significantly higher wage as your working hours won’t be restricted to Zumba classes specifically!

To get your career started in the best way, check out these articles to learn more about this area of the fitness industry:

How to Start Running Your Own Zumba Classes

As previously mentioned, we recommend gaining experience with contracted work after you become a Zumba instructor in the UK. However, following this you may decide to take your career to the next level and begin running your own classes.

But before we break this down, be sure to check out our article ‘How to Start a Fitness Class Business’ to find out more about how you can do this.

Step One: Organise the Legalities of Your Business

Zumba Instructor Class legalities

One of the first things you should do when you want to start running your own classes is to register your business through the gov.uk website.

You can register your business in two ways:

  • Sole trader – This means you’re self employed and can keep all your business’s profits after you’ve paid tax on them. However, you’re personally responsible for any losses your business makes.
  • Limited company – The finances of this business are separate from your personal finances. However, there are more reporting and management responsibilities. Business owners who register this way will often seek help from an accountant.

Next, you should look into a Disclose and Barring Service (DBS) Check. While this is often requested by employers, those who are self-employed can request a basic disclosure to get a copy of their criminal record – This costs £18 and is available to those in England and Wales.

Although a first aid qualification isn’t mandatory to become a Zumba instructor and run your own classes, it’s important to gain one. If an unfortunate situation arises during your class, attendees will look to you for guidance.

Zumba instructor with first aid qualification

This means not only will you provide yourself with the knowledge to help but will also put class attendees at ease if they know you can help them.

One last thing to keep in mind is that any pre-recorded classes should only use cleared music so as to not create music licensing issues. However, Zumba has a large list of original music and negotiated with music partners to create a library of other songs to use!

Step Two: Conduct Market Research

This is where you can identify competitors in your area and see what kind of services are being offered. This research can help determine your class prices and the creative direction of your business.

For example, if you’re based in Liverpool, you could check out other Zumba classes in your area like ZumbaByJennie:

ZumbabyJennie Zumba Instructor Classes

These classes are exclusively for women and are reasonably priced. Similarly, About This Girl, a campaign developed by Sports England for active women, also run Zumba classes for £5:

About This Girl Zumba Instructor Class

This is why market research is important when you become a Zumba instructor looking to start your own classes as you need to offer something that sets you apart from the competition.

You may find a gap in your area for what’s being offered, such as Zumba classes for the elderly. With your Jump Start Gold certification, you can hold classes for this specific demographic and adjust your choreography accordingly.

Step Three: Find a Location to Run You Classes

Zumba instructor class space

The next thing you need to do is find a location to host your classes. Most gyms or community centres will offer their space for a set fee, the cost of which will be influenced by a variety of factors such as how large or popular the space is.

For example, FireFit in Liverpool offers their fitness studio and sports hall for those who wish to hold classes:

FireFit Class space to rent for Zumba instructors

As you can see, it’s cheaper to rent their smaller studio – ideal for when you’re starting out. As your classes grow, you could then rent out half their sports hall as your number of attendees increases.

When you first become a Zumba instructor, you can even hold your classes outdoors. To do this, you will need to file for an outdoor business permit. This is for the local council to certify you’re conducting business safely.

You can do this by contacting the local council or private owner in charge of the park you want to use for a class. However, each park will have specific requirements. For small groups in certain areas, you may not even require a permit.

Step Four: Create and Set Your Prices Packages

When deciding on your own prices, you should consider what competitors in your area are charging and adjust your prices accordingly.

For example, here are a couple of Zumba classes currently being held in Liverpool. These are priced at £6 for a 45-minute class and £4 for a 60-minute class:

Zumba instructor class prices

The ideal pricing is one that reflects the quality of your service but is slightly cheaper than your competitors. Using this example above, you might decide to price your class between these two at £5.

Using this tool on the Zumba website, you can see that by charging just £5 and having 5 classes per week made up of 10 students, you can earn around £1000 a month!

Zumba instructor salary per class

While your Zumba salary per class may not be enough to cover your monthly expenses, you can still supplement this income by taking on other roles and fitness classes alongside your Zumba classes.

When setting your prices, keep in mind you’ll want to make sure you aren’t undercharging yourself when starting out, but you also don’t want to charge too much to put people off attending when there are cheaper classes in your area.

Step Five: Market Your Zumba® Classes Across Various Platforms

Zumba instructor planning classes

To run your own classes successfully, an effective marketing strategy is crucial! This will attract more people to your Zumba classes, allowing you to grow your business.

Ways you can market yourself both online and off include:

  • Social media – This allows you to interact with class attendees and advertise your services.
  • Creating your own website – It’s important you have a platform with all the necessary information about your business in one place.
  • Promote your services in the gym – Speak to people who regularly attend your gym, especially if they’re part of your target demographic.
  • Create a Referral Scheme – This is where you can ask clients to recommend your classes to people they know and reward them for doing so. For example, you may offer a discounted session for those who bring someone new to your class.

When you become a Zumba instructor, you can also register with the ZIN network. This allows you to create a profile on the official Zumba website where people can see the classes you offer, your credentials, and reviews left by other class attendees:

ZIN Network for Zumba Instructors

Creating your profile means people who are searching for local classes will find it a lot easier to locate you. Asking class attendees to leave reviews is also a great way to market yourself if people come across your profile.

However, you do have to pay for this membership. This costs around £35.93, but will be more if you choose a prepayment plan.

Step Six: Plan Your Zumba® Classes!

Zumba instructor planning classes

Now everything has been put in place, it’s time actually to plan your classes. As mentioned earlier, this is why it’s important you attend other Zumba classes to help improve your own.

When you become a Zumba instructor running your own classes, it’s your responsibility to ensure your choreography is planned, you have the right music, and any equipment such as speakers or lights are working properly.

You should also practise your routines on your own or ask friends and family to take part to see if the class flows smoothly and the choreography works well.

FAQ

How Much Does Zumba Training Cost?

Zumba instructor course cost

As of writing this article, the cost of both the Zumba Basic Level 1 and Jump Start Gold is £366.23 respectively.

However, you can ensure your licence is continually renewed when you become a Zumba instructor in the UK by purchasing Zumba Instructor Network Membership (ZIN).

The membership costs around £35.93 a month but will be even more expensive if you choose a prepayment option of either 6 or 12 months.

Can I Teach Zumba Without a Certification?

Teach zumba classes outdoors

The simple answer to ‘Can I teach Zumba without a certification?’ is no, you can’t. For legal reasons, you cannot teach under the Zumba trademark without an official licence from the company.

However, if you have completed the likes of a Level 2 Exercise to Music you will still be able to teach holistic dance workout classes.

Do I Need to Renew My Zumba Qualification?

Can you teach Zumba without a certification?

As soon as you complete your Zumba training, you’ll be licensed to start teaching these classes immediately. This licence is only valid for six months, from the date of your training. This is so Zumba instructors are equipped with the most recent practices, choreography, and teaching methods.

As mentioned earlier, Zumba Instructor Network Membership (ZIN) gives you an unlimited licence to teach Zumba classes as a member. This membership costs around £35.93 a month but without it, you will have to continue to renew your licence.

#1 – The Yoga Life

yoga podcasts for teachers

This yoga podcast is hosted by Kevin Boyle, a certified yoga teacher with over 500 hours of professional development under Yoga Alliance. He has been teaching yoga for the last ten years, and this has provided him with more than enough experience to run his own podcast!

One thing that makes The Yoga Life incredibly relatable and accessible to beginners is the fact that Boyle was once the least athletic person amongst his peers, and was more interested in partying when it came to choosing between that and exercise.

His love of yoga developed after one of his friends persuaded him to take part in a triathlon. His passion for health and fitness spiralled from there, and he ended up enjoying yoga so much so that he trained to become a teacher himself.

The Yoga Life has 100+ episodes available for listening, and it can be found on most major podcast streaming services including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and more.

The subject matter is pretty holistic and covers a wide range of areas, but thanks to Boyle’s experience the topic of teaching yoga crops up a lot. If you’re thinking of becoming a yoga instructor or you’ve recently qualified, you should definitely add this yoga podcast to your list!

Episode Pick: #103: Taylor Hunt, Growth Through Discomfort

#2 – Yoga Girl Daily: Conversations From The Heart

free yoga podcasts to download

We could hardly put together a list of the best yoga podcasts without mentioning Yoga Girl Daily. It’s certainly one of the most popular podcasts on yoga out there, and for good reason; it is hosted by Rachel Brathen.

If you’re someone who likes to keep up to date with the yoga community, you’ll know that Brathen is the most Internet-famous yoga teacher in existence. She is also the bestselling author of ‘Yoga Girl’, a book covering the adventure that yoga has taken her on so far, and founder of the online brand and community of the same name.

Brathen has also accumulated 2.1m Instagram followers on the platform as of January 2023, and her account is arguably the most influential within the yoga niche.

After all, she did make it onto the Forbes ‘Top Influencers of 2017’ list within the fitness category, which is impressive to say the least!

The Yoga Girl Daily podcast covers everything from mindfulness, astrology, and current world issues, all the way to the physical practice of yoga.

This is likely due to the fact that the podcasts are released on a daily basis, which is also great to know if you want something relevant and fresh to tune into during your morning yoga routine!

It’s easy to find something that you’re personally passionate about within the Yoga Girl Daily archives, especially since the podcast has been running since August 2019. If you follow other popular yogis online, you’ll also be glad to know that many of them are featured on the podcasts, including Jessamyn Stanley on the episode Radical Honesty with Jessamyn Stanely (July 3rd, 2020).

Episode Pick: (June 12th, 2020) – How to Fuel Your Fire

#3 – Jivamukti Yoga with Jessica Stickler

yoga teacher podcast image

Jessica Stickler has been teaching Jivamukti Yoga for over ten years, after qualifying in 2008 under Sharon Gannon and David Life (the co-founders of Jivamukti Yoga). She has taught this method internationally in locations such as Trinidad, Australia, and the Czech Republic.

This method of yoga focuses heavily on spirituality alongside the physical practice of the exercise, and is described as ‘a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings’ on the official Jivamukti Yoga website.

The Jivamukti Yoga podcast hosted by Stickler is largely made up of live classes that are streamed from the head office in Union Square, New York. The classes themselves include music, meditation, and spiritual scripture alongside the physical practice of this yoga method.

If you’re looking for a podcast that leans towards the spiritual side of yoga whilst remaining uplifting and inspiring, this is certainly one that you should try out for yourself. Plus, if you’re interested in learning more about the Jivamukti Yoga technique, then there’s truly no better way of introducing yourself to it.

With Stickler being an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher and the fact that she still works as a mentor in the apprentice teaching program, you can trust that her podcast content is wholly reliable and as inspiring as it could be!

Episode Pick: #117 – The Flow of Time

#4 – Triyoga Talks

yoga podcasts for beginners

The host of Triyoga’s podcast is their very own Yoga Director, Genny Wilkinson-Priest. She began practicing Ashtanga Yoga herself back in 2000 whilst working as a journalist in New York City, and eventually began teaching this style after relocating to the UK.

She is currently studying towards a Master’s degree in the Traditions of Yoga and Meditation at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, so it’s safe to say that she’s an expert in yoga philosophy!

The podcast itself is bi-weekly, and is made up of interviews with some of the most experienced yoga teachers in the world. This naturally means that the topics covered are pretty holistic, but it’s certainly one of the best yoga podcasts for teachers, especially if they’re looking for guidance and inspiration.

Recent interviewees include: Dianne Bondy, Faith Hunter, Gahl Sasson, Mia Togo, and Paul Grilley. If you’re already familiar with some of the big names in the yoga industry, you’ll know that this is a pretty well-rounded list of guests.

Episode Pick: #30 – Mia Togo on doing the inner work

#5 – Yoga is Dead

yoga spiritual podcasts

If the name of this podcast isn’t enough to hook your attention, we’re not sure what will!

This is one of the most popular yoga podcasts out there, and for all of the right reasons. If you’re looking for an eye-opening insight into the overlooked issues that exist within the yoga community today, and for something that will contribute to your own personal growth, then Yoga is Dead is certainly for you.

Not only will you be able to educate yourself on issues such as the cultural appropriation and racism that surrounds the practice of yoga in countries outside of India (if you weren’t already aware of this), but you will also be able to learn more about how to actively change the way that you and others around you view the practice of yoga.

It is 2023 after all, and a yoga podcast such as this making it into the more mainstream yoga media is well overdue! The hosts of Yoga is Dead are Tejal Patel and Jesal Parikh, and you can read more about their yoga journey here.

Tejal is trained in many different yoga practises, and runs tejalyoga.com where she shares her yoga journey as well as her passion for social justice. In 2019, she was also featured in the Yogawalla list of ‘19 Women of Colour to Watch in the Yoga World’, which is impressive to say the least!

Jesal has extensive experience teaching yoga in NYC, and is Co-Director of Yoga Teachers of Colour, a movement that actively promotes diversity in the world of yoga. You can check out their Instagram here to learn more about what they’re about, and we’re certain that you’ll love the Yoga is Dead podcast if you enjoy their content.

Episode Pick: #3 – Gurus Killed Yoga

#6 – The Lucas Rockwood Show

best yoga business podcasts

Lucas Rockwood is the CEO and founder of YOGABODY, an international yoga company that includes studios, props, and products as part of its business.

He has been practising yoga since 2002 (YOGABODY was founded in 2007), and has studied under some of the biggest names within the yoga industry including Sri K. Pattabhi, Alex Medin, and S.N. Goenka.

On the podcast, Rockwood focuses on all things health and wellness, meaning that it’s a great one to add to the mix if you have others that are completely yoga-oriented. It certainly appeals to the masses, and who knows; it could act as your gateway into yoga if you haven’t already tried it yet!

There are over 400 episodes, so you needn’t worry about running out of content. If you’re a serial listener and you’re looking for a yoga podcast to binge on, The Lucas Rockwood Show should definitely be one of your first choices.

The show regularly features best-selling authors of relevant books, as well as experts in topics like nutrition, personal growth, mental health, and more. There is also a section of user-generated content in each episode through the form of a listener Q&A, so if you’re a fan of audience interaction then you’ll be glad to know that you can easily get involved!

Episode Pick: #415 – Detox Your Thoughts

#7 – Yoga by Nature Podcast

best yoga podcasts

Looking for a yoga class podcast to follow during your daily sessions? We don’t blame you, especially if you’re a newbie to the world of yoga. The truth is, you would struggle to find a podcast that is as successful as this one in bringing guided sessions to all audiences.

Morven Hamilton is certainly one of the most qualified hosts to guide listeners through their yoga sessions, with 15000+ hours of worldwide teaching under her belt. She began practising it herself in 1995, and qualified as a YAP accredited yoga instructor by 2008, eventually becoming a Senior Yoga Teacher.

She specializes in multiple yoga forms, including:

  • Yoga mindfulness
  • Restorative and therapeutic yoga
  • Ayurvedic yoga
  • Philosophy

The fact that she has a strong background in holistic Hatha yoga alongside her many specialisms means that her classes appeal to everyone.

You can choose to follow either a seated meditation, a guided relaxation, or a Hatha yoga class, and they also come in varied lengths to suit any schedule. Haven’t always got time for a full 90-minute session? If so, you can easily try a 10-minute episode instead.

While we would recommend the Yoga By Nature podcast to anyone who wanted to jump into a guided yoga session, we would definitely recommend it to those that want something to listen to during their daily commute to and from work. The Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) episodes are incredibly relaxing, and perfect for giving your mind a rest from the stresses of everyday life!

Episode Pick: #84 – Five Pranas (Vayus) Meditation

#8 – Yoga, Meditation & Relaxation

power yoga podcast free image

The Yoga, Meditation & Relaxation podcast comes from a @lotusfloweryoga, a.k.a Katya Greer, who is a yoga teacher with over 10 years of experience. Not only does she teach classes in-person in her local area, but she has also gained significant experience by running online classes through Lotus Flower Yoga, her online platform.

The podcast sprung from this platform, and developed into one of the most-listened to yoga podcasts in the UK. There are 100+ episodes and each one is unique enough to keep you listening; topics range from restorative yoga to meditation and guided relaxation, meaning that they’re holistic enough to appeal to almost any yoga beginner.

Yoga nidra (yogic sleep) is one of the areas that Katya focuses on regularly, however, and it has many benefits.

Not only can it be as healing and relaxing as sleep despite the fact that you’re still in a state of full consciousness, but it can also help to improve your overall mental health as you learn to connect with your mind on a deeper level. We’ve tried it ourselves, and feel that it’s beneficial for anyone to try, especially if sleep is something that you struggle with!

Episode Pick: (June 14th, 2020) – Breath, Meditation and Yoga Nidra

#9 – Yogaland Podcast

yoga video podcast

One of the most exciting and inspiring yoga podcasts out there is Yogaland by Jason Crandell.

To give you some background information, Crandell has over 20 years of experience with yoga, so it’s safe to say that he has an undying passion for this form of exercise. He was initially trained by Rodney Yee, a world renowned yoga teacher, who has since said that ‘Jason is taking the art of teaching yoga to its next level’.

He travels the world teaching yoga and is a sought after guest at many high-profile yoga conferences across the globe. You can check out his schedule here in case you want to attend one of these events, or you can also check out the online sessions and courses that Jason and his wife and business partner Andrea run through their website.

Getting back to the podcast, there are over 200 episodes, and many of them are aimed at helping those who wish to teach online yoga themselves. It truly is one of the best yoga business podcasts for teachers out there, with episodes titled ‘getting paid for teaching yoga online’ and ‘how to be an exceptional online yoga teacher’, but that’s not to say that the rest of the available content isn’t suitable for those who simply want to find out more about yoga.

One thing that stands out about Yogaland episodes is that each one comes with a detailed description of what it contains. We find this incredibly helpful, as it means that we can give it a quick skim-read to determine whether that particular episode is something that we want to listen to (more often that not, it certainly is).

You’d be surprised at the lack of information that most podcast episodes give to their prospective listeners. If you’re going to commit up to an hour of your time listening to a podcast in 2020, you’re going to want to know exactly what that episode contains, so this really is an added bonus in terms of user experience!

Episode Pick: #185 – How to Sequence Online Yoga Classes

If you’re enjoying this article, you’ll enjoy these even more!

#10 – Redefining Yoga

power yoga podcast vinyasa

This podcast is hosted by Lara Heimann, the creator of the LYT Method. She has over 25 years of experience within the yoga industry, and is one of the most influential yoga leaders of our time.

The LYT (Lara’s Yoga Teaching) method is a yoga style that is centred around the ‘modern teachings of physical therapy and neurodevelopmental treatment’ (as described on her website), and was designed to help a modern-day generation of yoga practitioners to avoid the repercussions of leading a sedentary lifestyle.

The podcast itself is incredibly well-rounded, and is conveniently split into different categories so that you’ll never struggle to find exactly what you’re in the mood to listen to. These include: ‘Motivation’, ‘Interviews’, and ‘Ask Lara’, and they’re evidently separated due to being structured as different types of content.

This is great for the end user, as there’s nothing worse than being faced with a never-ending list of podcast episodes and having to play roulette when selecting one. With these categories and a handy and concise description of each episode put into place, you can make an informed choice when deciding which episode to give your time to.

We love that Lara lists the questions that she will be answering for every ‘Ask Lara’ episode, so that you’re not being faced with clickbait and you know exactly what kind of content to expect!

Episode Pick: #259 – Finding the Out Breath (Motivation)

#11 – Yoga Teacher Resource Podcast

yoga class podcast image

Are you an aspiring yoga teacher, or someone who is looking for fresh ideas to boost their yoga business?

If so, it’s a good thing that you stumbled upon our list as this is one of the best free yoga podcasts for teachers available online. The clue is in the name, and you’ll be glad to know that it does exactly what it says on the tin; it’s a fantastic source of inspiration.

If you haven’t already heard of it, The Yoga Teacher Resource is a website created by Mado Hesselink, a yoga teacher with a mission of helping other teachers become the best version of themselves.

At the time when The Yoga Teacher Resource was created, there wasn’t much information available online for yoga teachers when it came to things like structuring and marketing classes.

Hesselink decided to collate information from books, classes that she attended, and her own experiences, and publish this online so that others could benefit from it. It now exists as an extremely helpful and accessible resource for teachers, and the podcast acts as a great extension.

Episodes are published on a weekly basis (each Thursday to be exact), and are hosted by Mado Hesselink herself. They often feature guests with extensive experience, as well as coaching calls with Hesselink’s clients, so you’re essentially getting a free glimpse into her services and how she runs her business!

Episode Pick: (Jan 16th, 2020) – How Miranda Tripled her Yoga Business in One Year

#12 – Quietmind Yoga with Jeremy Devens

daily yoga podcast

Jeremy Devens turned to yoga after years of feeling as though he was walking around without truly expressing who he really was, as well as what he had to contribute to the world. The 9 to 5 life of working didn’t appeal to him, and neither did the nightlife surrounding the bands that he was a part of.

After giving yoga a try, he saw that this was something that he had a passion for; it made him feel alive, and brought out his creative side. He decided that he wanted to share what yoga had to offer with others, especially since it played a huge role in turning his own life around.

He founded Quietmind Yoga as a way to help others to learn how to find and express themselves, and in his own words; ‘I created the podcast that I wish existed’.

There are over 100 episodes in the Quietmind Yoga podcast playlist, and it pulls in 100,000+ listeners. This is well-deserved, as it provides a unique insight into the things that regular yoga classes struggle to touch upon.

It’ll leave you with the knowledge that there is much more to yoga than meets the eye, and the desire to unveil exactly what these things are. Luckily, there are countless episodes within this podcast series that do exactly that!

It delves into interesting topics that other yoga podcasts overlook, such as Vedic astrology, and also provides listeners with actionable advice on health, career, finances, and more.

If you’re looking for some serious inspiration when it comes to utilizing yoga as a tool for change in your life you really, really don’t want to miss this one. As we mentioned earlier, Devens himself allowed yoga to define the purpose of his life, so he’s definitely the perfect mentor for people who feels as though yoga could be the next big avenue for them.

Episode Pick: #125 – Yoga When You’re Feeling Low Energy

#13 – J. Brown Yoga Talks

free yoga podcasts to download online image

The yoga industry is saturated with those claiming to be able to teach you how to practice yoga in the deepest and most fulfilling way possible. However, we can certainly say that J. Brown stands apart from the crowd when it comes to his techniques, especially since he has over 15 years of experience under his belt.

Looking for yoga podcasts that focus on self-practise, yet provide an inspiring and refreshing space that keeps you connected to the world of yoga?

If so, you’ll be over the moon to find out that J. Brown Talks is described as a ‘quiet yoga revolution’, and focuses on healing and yoga philosophy as well as the business side of things, in case this is something that you wanted to learn more about.

In recent weeks, the podcast has provided some excellent conversations surrounding how yoga can aid peace and self-care in trying times.

Guests have delved into topics such as COVID-19 and the BLM movement, so there’s no shying away from current affairs here. It’s great to see a yoga podcast remaining so open about important issues, and providing listeners with the relevant tools to tackle their anxiety through their yoga practice.

Listening to J. Brown Talks gives you a real sense of community, and we’d definitely recommend it to those who practise alone!

Episode Pick: (March 30th, 2020) – Rob Walker, “The New Yoga”

#14 – Yoga Inspiration with Kino MacGregor

best yoga podcasts

Kino MacGregor has gained international fame within the yoga world in recent years, and her 1.1 million followers on Instagram certainly speak volumes when it comes to how well-known and effective her teaching techniques are.

She has practised Ashtanga yoga for 6 days per week over the past 20 years, and is the co-founder of the Miami Life Center in South Beach, Miami.

#1 – What are resistance bands?

While the different types of resistance bands can leave you confused, they all fall under the same category. They do have slightly different uses, but we can describe them holistically to make things a little easier!

So, what are resistance bands?

Resistance bands are literally ‘bands’ that are either flat or tubular in shape. Originally, their sole use was as a rehabilitation method for patients wanting to get back to exercise post-injury.

FACT: They were first made from surgical tubing!

benefits of resistance bands: surgical tubing

They were first used in physiotherapy sessions during the 1990s but only took off as a piece of mainstream exercise equipment in recent years. We’d be surprised if you haven’t already seen them being used at your local gym or on Instagram!

The benefits of resistance bands are what caused this spike in popularity, but we’ll get to that later on in this article.

They are mainly used either in place of or to complement resistance training involving heavy weights. Their portability helps their case, and the fact that they come in different pre-set tensions/resistance levels (which is something to look out for when buying).

Typically, the lighter the colour the lighter the resistance, and vice versa.

benefits of resistance bands: resistance levels

Many people don’t know this, but most of the exercises that are executed using free weights can also be done with resistance bands. In theory, this makes them competitors!

#2 – Different types of resistance bands: Explained

Now that we’ve established a broad answer to ‘what are resistance bands?’, it’s time to dig deeper and find out more about the different types of resistance bands that exist in the fitness world.

This will give you a better idea about the benefits of resistance bands in general.

If you’re clued up on how different types of resistance bands can focus on multiple parts of the body during exercise as well as providing different levels of resistance, you’ll be able to choose the right bands for your workout.

Flat bands

benefits of resistance bands: resistance band levels

If you’re a regular at the gym, then you probably associate the term ‘resistance bands’ heavily with flat bands. They are one of the most widely used and inexpensive models and get their name from their typical rubber band appearance.

Flat bands have no handles or grips, but they do come in varying levels of resistance.

They are usually colour-coded for this reason, but you can tell which will give more or less resistance from the width of each band.

Due to them being the smallest of the different types of resistance bands, they are usually used for rehabilitation purposes.

Athletes also use them to stretch out before or after exercise, especially long-duration races, so keep this in mind if this sounds like you! They’re especially great for aiding mobility and flexibility.

Average price (Amazon): £7.99-13.99 for a set. Check out OriGym’s list of the top resistance bands to see exactly where to buy them!

Pull-up bands

benefits of resistance bands: right order bands

In a similar league to flat bands, pull-up bands are also quite a common sight in most health and fitness settings. In fact, they’re probably the most frequently used by fitness enthusiasts.

When it comes to the benefits of resistance bands, pull-up bands have an advantage over flat bands.

They have more potential when it comes to building muscle and pulling off a greater variety of moves, as they add more resistance to exercises due to their thickness.

They are a great option for those who are used to flat resistance bands as well as those new to fitness, as they are relatively easy to grasp!

Like their thinner counterparts, they are usually colour coded in the same manner. If not then the thicker the band, the greater the resistance.

Staying true to their name, they’re also used to either assist users in pull-ups or add resistance to pull-ups, making them extremely versatile!

Average price (Amazon): £22.99-33.99 for a set.

Resistance tubes

benefits of resistance bands: resistance tubes

Resistance tubes have a different appearance to the bands, and also bring new options to the table when it comes to the different types of resistance bands and their uses.

Firstly, their design comes from the earliest version of the resistance band, which was surgical tube in case you missed this earlier! This is where the idea for their hard, tubular exterior came from.

When it comes to workouts, the handles on resistance tubes give them the advantage of being able to be anchored just about anywhere, making it easier to get a gym-like workout on the go.

For example, you can anchor them beneath your feet rather than on a lampost or door handle, making them extremely practical and user-friendly. The grip of the handles is usually easier on your palms too, which is always a plus when wanting to train more often.

Average price (Amazon): £14.99-22.99 for a set.

Figure 8 band

benefits of resistance bands: figure 8 band

Different again, we have the figure 8 band (named conveniently after its shape)!

The figure 8 band is one of the different types of resistance bands that is easily used without any accompanying pieces of equipment.

It’s also easy-to-use in general and is an excellent choice for those wanting to transition smoothly into training with resistance bands. Their short length allows for greater control so beginners usually see results faster with the figure 8.

That being said, they are still a challenging piece of equipment.

You should always feel challenged in some way during workouts, so be sure to choose a resistance level that is challenging yet sustainable in terms of reaching 12-15 reps.

Average price (Amazon): £7.99-10.99 for a set.

Lateral resistance band

benefits of resistance bands: lateral band

This one has a unique appearance and looks a little tougher at a first glance. Don’t worry, the fancy texture is just a protective sleeve for the tube inside, not some evil contraption!

The main difference between lateral resistance bands and pull-up or flat bands is that they have straps/cuffs, and are designed to target the lower body.

The straps/cuffs on the lateral band are designed to fit the ankles, and the lower body workouts that can be done using them are great for improving stabilisation in the lower body laterals.

The cuffs can, of course, be anchored to door handles etc. as resistance tubes can be.

However, they make up for what resistance tubes miss, which is the ability to comfortably anchor them to the ankles to work the lats.

Just like the different types of resistance bands that we have previously mentioned, they come in different levels of resistance which is very hand for those planning long-term fitness plans. It can be a great investment to purchase them in a set for this reason.

You should definitely add them to your collection for a more well-rounded workout!

Average price (Amazon): £22.99 for a set.

#3 – The Benefits of Resistance Bands

1) Inexpensive

benefits of resistance bands: price of resistance bands

We thought we’d start off our section on the benefits of resistance bands with something practical. Let’s face it, the practical side of things can be almost as important as the physical benefits when it comes to fitness!

To put it short, resistance bands are cheap. When compared to the likes of treadmills, exercise bikes, or power towers, they are clearly one of the most economical ways of getting fit.

The exact price will depend on which of the different types of resistance bands that you wish to buy.

Still, our research showed us the cheapest sets of resistance bands were being sold from £7.99, and the most expensive from around £22.99.

You can’t argue with that!

2) Portable

benefits of resistance bands: pull up resistance bands

Leading swiftly on, another of the practical benefits of resistance bands is that they are easy to carry around with you.

Rather than buying equipment that restricts you to working out at home, why not try something you can fit in your bag?

With resistance bands, there’s no excuse not to fit in at least 4-5 good workouts each week.

While your neighbour’s treadmill is rusting in their garage, you could be working out in the park, at work, or even on holiday! Yes, you heard us right – you won’t even need to leave the hotel room.

Considering how effective resistance bands are for getting in shape, their portable nature makes them a win-win. Not only do resistance bands work, but you can use them anywhere.

Halle Berry in this interview on resistance bands with Popsugar said: ‘these bands are so easy to carry that they allow me to exercise wherever I go’.

If that endorsement isn’t enough for you when looking up the benefits of resistance bands, then we don’t know what is!

3) Adaptable

benefits of resistance bands: resistance tubes in different colours

The adaptability of resistance bands is one of their main strengths, and certainly compliments the fact that they can be taken anywhere.

As we’ve already mentioned, most of the different types of resistance bands come in various resistance strengths, similarly to how dumbells come in different weights!

This is handy as it means that there is room for progression and that the exercise isn’t solely for beginners. You shouldn’t underestimate the strength of resistance bands as they can actually be pretty tough to master, especially if you start at a resistance level that is too heavy for you.

In general, the lighter the colour the lighter the resistance… but you should definitely read the packaging first!

4) Rehabilitation and Stretching

benefits of resistance bands: stretching with resistance band

Resistance bands in their simplest forms (also known as flat bands or tubes) are commonly used for rehabilitative exercises. If you’ve suffered from an injury in the past, chances are you’ve reaped the benefits of resistance bands on your road to recovery!

Even if you haven’t, it’s great to make yourself aware of this should you ever land in this situation.

They were actually first invented in a medical setting for the purpose of rehabilitation, which proves that they have been effective in such situations.

Since resistance bands are adaptable and come in light resistance levels, they’re also used for stretching.

They can be used before or after a workout, or at any time to generally improve flexibility in the joints and muscles.

More good news; there are no special stretches that come along with the benefits of resistance bands. Just those that you will already be familiar with, such as hamstring or quad stretches!

Getting into the habit of stretching with resistance bands is great for beginners, as they usually have a lot of mobility and flexibility to build in comparison to more advanced fitness enthusiasts.

If you want to increase your range of motion in general or post-injury, resistance bands are for you.

5) Easy-to-learn

benefits of resistance bands: thumbs up

A useful piece of info for beginners to exercise or those who have never used resistance bands is that you can pick up their techniques in a matter of minutes.

One of the main reasons for this is that they can be used to modify many familiar exercises. Even if you’re a complete beginner and have never actually tried any of these exercises before you will at least have a vague idea of how they work.

For example, the benefits of resistance bands can be seen when they’re used with common dynamic exercises such as squats, glute bridges, lateral leg raises, glute kick-backs, squat thrusters, and more.

They do exactly what they say on the tin by adding resistance and therefore toning your body at a faster rate. As long as you’ve nailed your form for these exercises (which really doesn’t take long), you’re good to go!

6) Full-body workout

benefits of resistance bands: resistance band exercise

The ability to gain a full-body workout from using them is certainly one of the greatest benefits of resistance bands. For anyone who has ever started a new fitness routine, gaining a full-body workout is essential.

After all, you want to ensure that you’re not leaving any areas of your body to fend for themselves.

With a single resistance band, it is more than possible to work every part of your body. It will likely be more effective with pull-up style resistance bands or resistance tubes rather than flat bands, but that’s not to say that you can’t use them to start with!

As they have many more possibilities in terms of exercise variety than weights do, the world is your oyster. In case you’re stuck for ideas, check out this full-body resistance band workout from Paleohacks.

Instead of just using a single band, you can always incorporate different types of resistance bands into your workouts to mix things up. For example, a lateral resistance band might be good for getting a more well-rounded workout.

7) Progression

benefits of resistance bands: using a tube band to stretch out

It’s screamingly obvious that progression is one of the most important aspects of exercise, especially if it’s with the common goal of increasing fitness level. The question is how do resistance bands work to progress our strength and overall fitness?

There are two main ways.

As we’ve already mentioned, resistance bands come in a variety of resistance levels. This is crucial for progression, as if they were all made with the same resistance then they would be more or less useless as a tool for improving strength.

To master your workouts and see physical results, you need to be constantly beating your personal best. By continuously pushing to use a higher level of resistance you will be ticking this box.

Not only do resistance bands work for progression by adding resistance… they can also add assistance to your workouts. In order to aid those who cannot execute pull-ups yet, pull-up bands are tied to the overhead bar and used as a makeshift step.

The tension allows the user to pull their body weight up much easier than they would otherwise be able to, making for a smoother progression into a difficult exercise!

This use of pull-up bands is one of the most common methods for pull-up progression, and their fame is mostly owed to the technique.

8) Muscle Tone and Endurance

benefits of resistance bands: flexing muscles

We’ve touched upon the fact that resistance bands are good for your body, as they wouldn’t be such a popular piece of exercise equipment if they weren’t. However, you still may not be convinced that they are any good for bulking or toning up your physique.

We get it; their appearance doesn’t scream ‘bodybuilder’ like barbells or dumbbells do!

But hear us out. To put it bluntly; being good for strength training is one of the benefits of resistance bands that you don’t want to overlook.

When you select resistance band workouts that challenge the muscles that you want to focus on and do them with the correct resistance for your current ability level, you’ll see great results.

You may not be able to bulk up to bodybuilder standard, but that certainly doesn’t mean that you can’t get lean with resistance bands.

Your muscles don’t have some hyper-awareness of where the resistance you’re training them with is coming from. If you’re giving them a great workout that fatigues them just as much using dumbells do, then chances are that you’ll get similar results!

Once you’ve gotten to a good level and built on your muscle mass, you may wish to train with free weights more often to take this further. But the truth is, anyone at any fitness level at all can train with resistance bands and see a great outcome.

If you’re already shredded, then resistance bands can help you to maintain your mass, especially if you’re out and about without access to a gym. They can also help you to gain the muscular endurance that you may be missing out on.

benefits of resistance bands: low impact

If you’re a runner or any kind of endurance athlete, then you’ll definitely want to know this.

As resistance bands are a low-impact alternative to weight training, this also makes them a great option for building endurance for those who don’t want to focus solely on free weights.

One of the main benefits of resistance bands over weight training is that they provide more exercise variety. They also prevent you from using momentum to cheat and therefore challenge your endurance progression further.

You can increase your reps at a faster pace with reduced risk of injury!

The improved mobility that you can gain from resistance band workouts is also extensive, and you’ll quickly gain a surprisingly good range of motion in your joints by doing them regularly.

This will make time spent lifting weights and on other exercises more productive too!

#4 – Do resistance bands work?

Now that you’re clued up on the benefits of resistance bands and you’ve heard what we have to say about them, you’re probably still asking; ‘do resistance bands work though? Really?’

We get that on the surface they don’t look as though they could do much damage.

If you see a kettlebell, barbell, or tire being thrown around the gym you almost feel a little frightened to try them out… but the curiosity and excitement win you over.

With resistance bands, things are different. When the question do resistance bands work? comes up, it looks almost laughable compared to questioning whether these monster pieces of equipment are up to scratch.

If you were to pick from all four pieces of equipment, you’d probably overlook them before reading about the benefits of resistance bands.

We’re not saying that you should pick them, but we’re certainly here to tell you why they would make a good option! After all, you deserve to find the best piece of kit for your goals, and an accurate and direct answer to do resistance bands work?

benefits of resistance bands: questioning expression

The truth is, it all boils down to your goals.

The question do resistance bands work? could mean a multitude of things, so we’re going to go with the four most common questions that we could find on the web.

Do resistance bands work for strength training?

If your goal is to train and gain strength over a steady period of time, then you’ll find the benefits of resistance bands more than enough!

Yes, they do work for strength training over a steady period of time, but as the same as any other exercise only if you put in the maximal effort. You need to be consistently beating your personal best when it comes to reps or resistance levels.

Push for higher reps if you want to work on endurance and gain strength as quickly and effectively as possible.

Resistance bands are particularly useful for endurance as they are low-intensity in comparison to weights, so you can hit higher reps faster.

However, weights would get you to a higher level of strength in the long-run. This is because they have a greater variety of weights/difficulty levels to choose from, so it takes far more time to max out your level in weight training than it does with bands (and there is more potential for improvement).

benefits of resistance bands: dumbells

Do resistance bands work to gain muscle mass and tone?

In short, YES. Gaining muscle mass and tone is one of the main benefits of resistance bands. However, that’s not to say that they are the most useful piece of equipment in this area if you’re not a beginner.

Weights will help you to bulk up much faster than resistance bands will, as they are more high-impact and put your muscles under more strain.

If this is your goal, by all means, start out with resistance bands, progress to weights once you’ve mastered them, and continue to use them to maintain endurance!

OR use them to add resistance to your free weights workouts. It’s your shout!

Do resistance bands work to lose weight?

This is one of the most common questions we’ve seen online regarding this topic, and we can certainly answer it for those wondering.

Any physical activity that helps you to build muscle and shed excess calories will help you lose weight.

This is true as long as you have good nutrition (including eating the right amount of food), stay hydrated, and exercise 3-4 times per week, giving it your all when you do.

Combine working out with bands with some high-intensity cardio, and you’ll feel all the benefits of resistance bands whilst losing weight at the same time! It’s a win-win.

Before You Go!

That’s it for our article on the benefits of resistance bands! We hope we’ve left you feeling inspired to give them a try.

How to Become a Personal Trainer for Kids

In this article, we cover everything that you need to know about how to become a personal trainer for kids, including:

Before we jump in, completing a CIMSPA endorsed Personal Training Diploma is the best way to get qualfiied as a personal trainer for kids! Download a free course prospectus here to learn more.

Step 1 – Get Qualified as a Kids Personal Trainer

get qualified as a kids personal trainer

To be a personal trainer in any capacity, you need the following qualifications:

Holding both of these qualifications is essential regardless of whether you want to work as a kids personal trainer for a company or on a self-employed basis.

Many credible course providers offer the level 2 fitness instructor and level 3 personal trainer courses together as part of a package – known as a Personal Training Diploma. This is the quickest and most cost-effective way to get qualified.

To be valid, your qualifications must be regulated by an Ofqual-approved awarding body, such as Focus Awards or ActiveIQ, and endorsed by CIMSPA.

How to Become a Personal Trainer for Kids UK

Without this regulation and accreditation, your qualification will not be recognised by employers, insurance providers, or any clients who do their research (which definitely includes parents!)

Getting the qualifications needed to become a kids personal trainer can take as little or as long as you need, depending on your individual situation.

If you’re eager to start your new career, you can get qualified in just 4 weeks by opting to study full-time. Alternatively, completing an online personal trainer course means you can study at your own pace, allowing you to work around existing employment or family commitments.

You can learn more about how long it takes to become a personal trainer here.

Step 2 – Get a DBS to Become a Personal Trainer for Kids

How to Become a Kids Personal Trainer

As well as personal training qualifications, working with children also requires you to have an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

A DBS is a statutory criminal record check that looks at the record of a person’s past.

The check looks for things such as convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings, and is required to ensure safeguarding when it comes to working with children and vulnerable adults.

The good news is that applying for a DBS is really straightforward. In England or Wales, the check costs £23 and requires you to have the following pieces of information:

  • A list of your addresses for the last 5 years
  • Your National Insurance Number
  • Your passport
  • Your driving licence (if you have one)

Other than that, all you need to do is apply via the ‘Request a basic DBS check’ page on the Government’s website. Once your application is complete, you can expect to receive your certificate within 14 days.

You can apply here to work in Scotland or here for Northern Ireland.

After you’re qualified as a PT and have your DBS check, you’ll have all of the qualifications and certifications necessary to pursue this career.

Step 3 – Get Insured to Work as a Kids Personal Trainer

How to Become a Personal Trainer for Children

Whilst being insured isn’t a legal requirement, the consequences of not having insurance could cause significant financial loss or even legal issues – so working without insurance really isn’t worth the risk.

The good news is that personal trainer insurance is reasonably priced.

The most important policy to have as a kids personal trainer is Public Liability insurance.

This insurance will protect you in the instance that a client injures themselves during your session or if you or your client damage any property that belongs to a third party.

You will also need Professional Indemnity insurance, which will cover you in the event that a client claims to have become injured or ill as a result of you providing bad or ‘inaccurate’ advice.

This could include anything from serious claims, such as a client getting injured by following your wrong advice on how to perform an exercise, to claims that your advice didn’t lead the client to achieve their goals.

kids personal trainer insurance

You may think that the chances of a client getting injured or an expensive piece of equipment getting damaged are slim, but these things can happen to anybody. When they do happen, not being insured could cost you a lot of money.

Aside from protecting your own interests, being insured shows clients (or in the case of a kids personal trainer, the parents of your clients) that you are professional and trustworthy.

If you own your own children’s personal training business, there are additional policies you should consider. Those are:

  • Business Equipment insurance, which will cover the costs of replacing any of your equipment should it become damaged or stolen.
  • Personal Accident insurance, which will pay out for the cost of your injury treatment or rehabilitation if you get injured on the job.
  • Loss of earnings / income protection insurance. This will pay out to cover the costs of your expenses should be unable to work due to illness or injury.

NOTE: Always check out insurance providers reviews on a neutral site like TrustPilot and double-check the terms and conditions to see what you will be covered for and eradicate any loopholes.

Step 4 – Decide Where You Want to Work as a Children’s Personal Trainer

How to Become a Personal Trainer for Kids

Once you have the appropriate qualifications, certifications, and insurance, the next step is deciding where you want to work as a kids personal trainer and what capacity you want to work in.

Personal trainers have many career options, including:

  • Working as an employee for a gym or fitness company
  • Working on a freelance basis, paying rent fees to a gym to train clients in their facility
  • Starting a business offering personal training services

Of course, PTs typically work at gyms, health clubs, and leisure centres. As a children’s personal trainer specifically, likely places of work also include:

  • Schools
  • Educational facilities
  • Children’s sports clubs

As a business owner, where you work is completely up to you. Some good ideas include renting out local venues, for example a community centre, to hold fitness classes. Or, you could run 1-1 PT sessions in outdoor spaces or as a mobile personal trainer.

becoming a childrens personal trainer

The ‘right’ career option for you really does depend on your individual circumstances.

Working as a freelancer or starting your own business can see you earn a higher personal trainer salary, however, you will need to have enough paying clients to cover any outgoings such as:

  • Renting a space to train clients
  • Marketing your business
  • Insurance
  • Equipment

For that reason, seeking an employed position is a great place to start if you’re newly qualified. Employed positions offer a stable income, and give you the chance to acquire a client base and build a good reputation.

You can find our expert advice on finding a personal training job here.

How Much Does A Kids Personal Trainer Earn?

kids personal trainer salary

Because there are various capacities in which you can work as a children’s personal trainer, it is difficult to suggest an ‘average’ salary.

Here are some factors that can affect how much you earn:

  • Your experience (the more experience you have, the more you can earn)
  • Your target market (clients from more affluent areas will pay more)
  • Your area (expect to earn more in big cities, especially London, compared to rural areas)

Here’s an example of what to expect in terms of hourly pay:

becoming a personal trainer for children

For reference, this is a pretty standard salary for a part-time job as a kids PT:

kids personal trainer job description

This might not look like much of a salary, but keep in mind that this is a part-time, entry-level role.

If you were to take on this role and become a part-time personal trainer on the side, you would earn a healthy income of around £28000 (figures from indeed).

In the perfect scenario, you would work as a children’s personal trainer in a full-time position, however, part-time positions are much more common in this line of work.

Fortunately, there are plenty of general personal training jobs available, which you will be qualified to do with the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training that we discussed in Step 1.

Simultaneously working these two jobs on a part-time basis would ensure you receive a stable income whilst still being able to fulfil the role you are truly passionate about.

Over time, your part-time kids personal training role could develop into a full-time position. Or, you could use the position to acquire some loyal clients and a good reputation in the community, ready to pursue a career as a freelance kids personal trainer in the near future.

Step 5 – Expand Your Skill Set to Progress in Your Career As A Children’s Personal Trainer

becoming a kids personal trainer

The final step towards being successful in this career is expanding your skillset to increase the services that you can offer, and as a result, bump up your potential earnings.

By seeking additional health and fitness qualifications, such as a Level 4 Personal Trainer Course, you can diversify your skill set and expand your business.

For example, by completing your nutrition training with OriGym, you could acquire the skills needed to offer meal planning services or general advice on eating better to your clients.

Whilst you will have clients who simply enjoy sport or are interested in pursuing athletic or sporting careers, a recent Health Survey showed that 21% of year 6 children in the UK are obese, and 14% overweight.

Therefore, it’s likely that the parents of clients would be interested in nutrition coaching alongside a training programme.

Other additional qualifications that you could pursue to diversify your business include a Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga Diploma, which would of course qualify you to become a kids yoga teacher.

#1 – Nutrium

Nutrium nutrition software logo

This is one of the most popular pieces of nutrition software in the UK, mainly due to how effective its features are and how easy it is to navigate.

One of the first things you’ll notice about it is that it has that satisfying ‘everything in one place’ feel to it, which you would expect when purchasing software to enhance your business processes.

Not only is it fantastic for setting goals, but it’s also great for nutritionists wanting to take an active stance on their client’s eating habits rather than just setting them a meal plan and leaving them to it.

They can send their clients notifications around the time that they’re due to eat so that they’re reminded not to stray back into unhealthy habits!

It’s also incredibly interactive for the clients to use for themselves, as they can record the meals that they have had and therefore keep their nutritionist informed about how well they’ve managed to stick to their plan in case any adjustments need to be made in the next session.

In terms of pricing, there are a variety of packages listed on the Nutrium website. These include a meal plan package aimed at independent fitness professionals who ‘want to be more organised and offer an innovative service to clients.’

Or, the other option is a follow-up package aimed at those ‘who want to grow their business and focus on clients’ follow-up and retention.’ The difference between the two options listed is currently £16 per month or £192 annually.

Features:

  • Easy-to-navigate homepage
  • Nutritional assessment
  • Goal setting
  • Recommendations for exercise & foods to avoid
  • Anthropometry feature (to help identify body composition)
  • Diet assessment (energy requirement calculation)
  • Meal planning
  • Additional users (add your secretary to the nutrition assessment software!)
  • Follow-up capabilities

#2 – DietMaster Pro

dietmaster pro nutrition software logo

Another popular piece of nutrition software amongst dieticians is DietMaster Pro. It has over 1.2 million users around the world, which gives you an idea of how well-known it is in the world of nutrition!

It works as an effective nutrition analysis software due to its ability to print nutritional facts labels from custom recipes, and the fact that it provides pre-loaded templates for meal plans and individual meals (to save you from doing the hard work yourself).

One thing that comes up regularly in customer reviews for DietMaster Pro is that it’s great for copying and pasting meal plans across accounts, which makes it extremely easy for dieticians to share meal plans with their clients.

The hardware integration is a feature that stands DietMaster Pro apart from the crowd as not every piece of software for nutrition can do this. It is stated on their website:

‘DietMaster Pro easily integrates with bioelectrical impedance body composition analysers and metabolic measurement systems from leading industry manufacturers.’

It’s great for those wanting to closely monitor body composition targets and any shortfalls/deficiencies in their client’s eating habits, which is arguably one of the most important aspects of nutrition. Could this be one of the best nutrition tracking software products?

Features:

  • Option to print nutritional facts labels from custom recipes
  • Meal planning/grocery lists
  • Individual meal templates
  • Body measurement input & body composition control targets
  • Fitness assessment capabilities
  • Copy/paste feature for meal plans across accounts
  • Hardware integration
  • The DietMaster Web platform allows professionals to upload meal plans to clients’ smartphones

#3 – Nutritionist Pro

nutrition software

Designed and managed by registered dieticians, for nutrition professionals, Nutritionist Pro is a piece of comprehensive nutrition software for all of your analysis needs.

Some of their most well-known clients include Weightwatchers, Google and Whole Foods.

Nutritionist Pro is amongst the best nutrition software for professionals as it consists of three separate modules, which are:

  • Food Labelling
  • Diet Analysis
  • Menu Creation

The Diet Analysis programme uses built-in formulas to allow you to calculate the individual calorie needs of each client.

You can then set a client’s nutrition goal, and monitor their nutrient intake using the Dietary Reference Goals feature. With a large database of food from around the world, the software makes it easy to track a patient’s intake.

To gain feedback on how clients are eating over time, use the Food Frequency Questionnaire, which will allow you to see whether you need to alter your approach to their nutrition tracking.

The creators of Nutritionist Pro recognise that exercise is just as important as diet, so the software also allows you to set exercise goals.

Simply pick from a list of exercises to see calorie expenditure, and factor this into the nutrition goals that you set for your clients.

With the built-in menus feature, you can quickly create personalised menus for your clients using templates for categories such as high protein, heart-healthy, eating out, and more.

Although these are pre-set templates, you can edit them to suit individual client needs. Nutritionist Pro offers a free trial for all modules, with the Diet Analysis programme costing $599 for 1 computer, or $885 to be set up on a larger server.

Developed back in 1982, over 1 million have relied on the Nutritionist Pro family of products since its creation, making it some of the best nutrition coaching software on the market.

Features:

  • Food Frequency Questionnaire for analysis
  • Create and analyse unlimited recipes for clients
  • Calculate caloric expenditure
  • Set nutrition goals and track client progress
  • Built-in menus and templates that can be customised

#5 – Healthie

Healthie nutrition analysis software logo

Healthie is a more holistic fitness and nutrition software in the UK that can be used by many different professionals in the industry, such as ‘health coaches’ or nutritionists, personal trainers, massage therapists, occupational therapists, etc.

It’s perfect for dieticians or nutritionists looking for something centred around the organisational side of things and communication with clients rather than structuring meal plans. If you already have a software or process for structuring meal plans and keeping track of your client’s progress, you cannot go wrong with Healthie.

The ability to process billing is great, as it enables you to securely store your client’s credit card information in one place, to keep track of which payments have been received and which ones are outstanding, to create custom payment packages for your clients (which is incredibly important from a sales perspective) and more!

As well as this, you can also connect with your clients securely through a messenger and share images, documents and video links, etc. to add a personal touch outside of sessions. This also allows you to upload customised meal plans that you may have constructed in other software.

You can conduct video consultations or webinars too, which is fantastic if you run an online nutrition business or you’re thinking about doing so in the future! It’s also good for gaining enquiries from people in your area who stumble across your website or social media platforms.

In a nutshell, there are a whole host of features on this platform that make it so that essentially all you need to do for this side of your business other than using this software is build meal plans… not too bad!

Features:

  • Billing/payments feature
  • Messaging feature with clients
  • Video consultations & webinars
  • Appointment managing
  • Email & text appointment reminders for clients
  • E-paperwork

#6 – Nutritics

Nutritics nutrition analysis software image

One of the best nutrition analysis software products on our list is this software from Nutritics. They have a list of high-profile professional clients including the NHS, Public Health Guard, Nestle Health Science and GSK.

When it comes to meal planning with this software, there are over 800,000 foods to choose from, which also include foods and supplements from popular brands. There is also the ability to analyse recipes that are either created by the user or pre-uploaded to the system, and then create healthier versions of them for clients before adding them to meal plans.

Each program created with the software is customisable, as nutrition professionals can schedule events with their clients, as well as share videos, recipes, articles, meal plans, etc. via LIBRO, which is their mobile app.

LIBRO (described as a ‘health & lifestyle AI assistant’) is useful for both clients and professionals as it is an effective method for clients to log their own sleep and eating habits, etc. and for their nutritionist/dietician to then access and analyse that information to aid them in their journey.

Perhaps one of the main reasons that Nutritics stands out from many of its competitors is the unique feature that allows users to track their profit, cost and waste. Armed with this, professionals can boost their profitability by seeing where unnecessary outgoings are being made!

Features:

  • Nutrition analysis
  • Meal planning for clients
  • Schedule events, articles, videos, etc. for clients to view
  • Ability to analyse recipes
  • Opportunity to add your brand to the software
  • Ability to customise dietary requirements
  • Cost, Profit & Waste Calculation

#7 – Nutrition Maker

nutrition maker software logo

Providing nutritious meal plans for clients has never been easier than it is with Nutrition Maker. Each meal plan pre-uploaded to the software is designed by registered dieticians, so you can rest assured that some of the work is already done for you!

The online portal access for both professionals and their clients is a fantastic way of keeping clients motivated, as they can monitor their progress and keep on track with their goals. Could this be one of the best nutrition analysis products due to this feature?

The ability to monitor weight loss, body measurements, body fat percentage, etc. in clients with a biometrics test is invaluable, as it makes progress much easier to track and flags up any pitfalls that should be rectified in the next session.

Following on from this, the health risk questionnaire is a good method of keeping clients in the know about where they stand with their current health and gives them inspiration to stick to their goals set by the professional.

Looking for a self-explanatory nutrition software? We don’t blame you, as it’s sometimes difficult to know where to begin when working with something you haven’t tried before. The great thing about Nutrition Maker in general is that it comes with free training and video tutorial access, so you don’t need to worry about figuring things out for yourself!

Features:

  • Nutrition/diet analysis
  • Over 1400 unique meal plans
  • Healthy recipes (accompanied by shopping lists)
  • Online portal
  • Health risk questionnaire for clients
  • Free training and video tutorials

#8 – TiqDiet

tiqdiet nutrition software logo

One glance at the TiqDiet interface will show you that this piece of nutrition software is incredibly professional and easy-to-use on both desktop and mobile. The nutrition plans and recommendations can be easily accessed from any compatible platform, making it easy for you and your clients to use TiqDiet on the go.

The software comes with ‘intelligent reminders’, that are both inspiring for clients and time-efficient for professionals.

Reminders take the pressure of constantly motivating clients from the nutritionist’s shoulders, reminding them to stick to their scheduled activities and meal plans on the software without the need for professional intervention (until the next session!).

If there’s something that you need to let your clients know outside of your sessions or vice versa, you can always use the built-in chat feature to make communication easier to track. This can be much more efficient than texting separately, as we all know how easily messages can get lost when running a business.

One feature that absolutely blows us away is the ability to use TiqDiet on Apple Watch. We haven’t noticed many other nutrition software products that offer this feature, and it certainly helps TiqDiet to stand out from its competitors.

Features:

  • Nutrition plans available across all compatible platforms
  • Built-in chat feature
  • Intelligent reminders
  • Shopping lists alongside meal plans
  • Real-time
  • Apple Watch compatibility (view nutrition plans on your favourite smartwatch!)

#9 – NutriAdmin

NutriAdmin nutrition software brand image

NutriAdmin is a nutrition software for nutritionists who want to keep all their business processes in one place.

It’s relatively rare to see pieces of software that incorporate billing into their platforms, and we’ve only mentioned one other with this capability on our list. NutriAdmin allows you to manage client payments easily without the need for any other platforms, making it a good choice for those who don’t want to overcomplicate their business!

The ability to create customizable client profiles is another plus in this area, as not only does it keep your files both secure and ‘tidy’ in one place, but it’s also easy to update the information as you go along.

Tired of all the admin work that your business brings in? You’ll be glad to know that with NutriAdmin, you can automate a lot of your admin work, by sending out client questionnaires, recipe suggestions, progress reports, etc. in a matter of minutes (and without all the printing). You can also schedule appointments with clients via the platform, which saves a good amount of unnecessary phone calls!

The meal planning side of things is well-equipped for professionals, with over 70,000 different food items listed in the platform’s database. The software also generates shopping lists automatically alongside this, making it easy for you and your clients to put together a weekly/monthly plan.

Features:

  • Billing/payment features
  • Meal planning
  • Professional client questionnaires
  • EHR (electronic health records)
  • Appointment scheduling

#10 – Waterlogged

waterlogged nutrition software image

We wanted to include every area of professional nutrition software on our list, so we’ve gone for something a little different with this choice.

Are your clients struggling to drink enough water? Perhaps they’ve relied on fizzy drinks or gallons of coffee in the past, and now you’re trying to get them to change their hydration habits.

Waterlogged is a great software for nutritionists who want to boost their client’s water consumption, as the name may suggest. It could also be a good nutrition software for personal trainers to recommend to clients who are struggling to drink enough water.

It sends your clients personalized reminders of how much water they have left to drink for the day, tracks their consumption week on week, and even allows them to add a custom glass/water bottle using their smartphone camera!

In terms of pricing, it is pretty inexpensive for clients to go premium if they wish to and only amounts to $3.99 (£3.07) per month.

Features:

  • Inexpensive
  • Tracks water consumption
  • Customized reminders
  • Fitbit integration

#11 – LifeSum

LifeSum software logo

The slogan of LifeSum is simply ‘Lose Weight, Get Stronger, Eat Better,’ and it really will help your clients to do all three of those things whilst they’re working with you.

Following on from the previously mentioned nutrition facts software, this is a great product to suggest to your clients if they want to feel as though they’re acting autonomously in their journey as well as following your advice.

It provides meal plans that are centred around specific diets, whether that’s clean eating or keto, that clients can view and use in sessions with you when you’re aiding them in constructing a plan that includes foods that they enjoy.

There is a ‘Macro & Net Carb Tracking’ feature that helps clients gain a better insight into what they’re eating and how it will affect their end goal and encourages them to closely monitor their progress.

Recipes are always a plus when it comes to getting clients excited about healthy food. Thankfully, this nutrition planning software has hundreds of recipes for them to choose from, which they can try out or ask you about during your sessions together (regarding how they could fit it in with their current meal plan!).

Features:

  • Meal planning
  • Healthy recipe database
  • Macro & carb tracking
  • Meal plans based on specific diets (clean eating, keto, etc)
  • Can sync with other health apps

#12 – MyPlate

MyPlate nutrition software logo

Since your entire business revolves around your clients, it’s handy to have a few nutrition software suggestions to make that will aid them in sticking to their goals.

If we think about the psychological side of things, clients are more likely to stick to their goals if they truly believe that they are making these changes for themselves, not just for you and your sessions together (even though they will have booked these themselves, it’s just the way the human mind works!). If they have one separate app that they can use for themselves, it could boost their progress.

MyPlate is a perfect example of an app that does this for clients, hence the name ‘MyPlate’. It was created by Livestrong and is effectively a calorie-counting app but with many added features, that make it more holistic in comparison to competing apps on the market.

For starters, it gives you a great insight into the nutrition side of things (rather than just calories). You can view nutrition charts and graphics both on your smartphone and smartwatch and view exactly how much of each nutrient you have consumed in that day.

There is the ability to scan barcodes on food items, making it easier to find or log them into the app database. You can view serving sizes, food suggestions (based on your dietary preferences) and even free meal plans and 30-minute workouts! While they are limited on what advice they can give, this could be a good nutrition software for personal trainers to recommend to their clients.

Finally, the online community in-app is great for those looking to connect to others who are on a similar journey, and who want to give and receive support to boost their motivation.

We couldn’t recommend this app enough for professionals who want their clients to feel fully engaged with a healthy lifestyle and also feel as though they are acting autonomously as well as being under the watch of their nutritionist/dietician.

Features:

  • Personalised meal planning
  • Nutrition goal tracking
  • Nutrition charts
  • Barcode scanner
  • Motivation tips (daily)
  • 30-minute workouts
  • Online community
  • Apple Watch compatible

#13 – SimplePractice

simplepractice software logo

We’re finishing our list of the best software for nutrition professionals out there with a pretty holistic platform, as our aim in this article is to provide you with every option out there!

Already using nutrition analysis software for your client’s meal plans that you’re happy with? Not to worry. SimplePractice brings everything else that you need to the table, without you having to pay more for the nutrition features that you’re already using.

It’s software that comes with secure billing/payments so that you can take payments from your clients without having to handle credit cards.

Your clients can also schedule themselves in for appointments by viewing your available slots within the software, so this significantly reduces the amount of admin that you would usually complete day in, day out!

Working as a nutrition professional can be tough when clients are no-shows, therefore the ability to send out email, text, or voice reminders with SimplePractice is invaluable. Save your time and boost your earning potential with this feature and get notified about cancellations before it’s too late to fill the slot with another client.

Unlimited document storage is another fantastic element of this software, especially considering the number of documents that you are likely to store working in the health and fitness sector! Documents can be viewed on the go in the SimplePractice app, as well as any notes or other client information, and are always securely stored.

Features:

  • Appointment scheduling
  • Billing/payments feature with online reports
  • Ability to upload and store documentation
  • Support

#14 – Foodzilla

nutrition software for food tracking

When your day is spent searching for recipes and updating spreadsheets, it means you have less time to spend working directly with clients, not to mention being extremely exhausting!

As some of the best nutrition software for dietitians, that’s where Foodzilla comes in, allowing you to create highly personalised nutrition plans ten times faster than if you were to do this manually.

You can either import a meal plan from the template database or auto-generate a new plan based on the client’s individual nutrition and dietary needs.

For instance, you can generate a meal plan based upon their macronutrient ratio, and choose a list of foods to avoid.

Foodzilla will then find recipes that match their needs in seconds, which you can edit to ensure that it perfectly meets the requirements of your plan.

The software also automatically generates shopping lists for clients and groups items into categories, to make their supermarket trip easier and more efficient.

What’s great about Foodzilla is that it offers a free branded and customisable mobile app for clients, which you can publish their meal plan directly to.

Alternatively, you can export the meal plan as a PDF and send it to them as a web link.

You can then stay in touch with your clients, offering them tips and motivation to follow their plan through the app’s live messaging feature.

Another unique feature of Foodzilla is that it can be personalised, to help build up brand recognition and loyalty for your clients.

For example, the mobile app and PDFs can be edited to showcase your brand name, logo, and colours.

Features:

  • Recipe database

  • Meal planner
  • Recipe builder, allowing you to share your own recipes

#15 – Coach Catalyst

best nutrition softwares

Coach Catalyst is amongst the best nutrition software for personal trainers, coaches, and nutritionists, to help them hold clients accountable when they’re not with them.

The idea of the software is to make the coaching side of your nutritionist role quicker and more efficient, by reducing the administrative load.

This leaves more time for you to scale your business, whilst also allowing you to focus on helping your clients.

For instance, their intuitive and easy-to-use programme builder allows you to create programmes containing any combination of lessons, habits, or scheduled messages.

From transformation challenges, to habit coaching courses such as how to create a meal plan, simply select these programmes and your client can work through them on their very own Coach Catalyst mobile app.

You can edit this content to fit the individual needs of each client or use elements in your nutrition programmes.

Another great feature of Coach Catalyst is that it allows you to easily track your client’s progress. Through their app, clients can update their measurements, add photos, and share what they’ve been eating.

They can also see their programme progress, overall progress, and compliance. Coach Catalyst integrates with other nutrition tracking and health tools so that you have all of the information you need in one place, such as:

  • Garmin
  • Apple Health
  • Google Fit

Keep all of your client communication and group posts in one place with the real-time messaging feature.

This allows you to send text, voice notes, and attachments, whilst also allowing you to schedule messages in advance.

The Communities feature gives you space to share news and updates, as well as provides clients with an area to interact, ask questions, and swap tips.

Features:

  • Programme builder and library
  • Nutrition tracking and progress
  • Integration with other health tracking tools
  • Real-time messaging
  • Community feature

Features:

  • Client mobile app
  • Web browser functionality
  • Meal planning wizard
  • In-app live chat
  • Progress tracker

#17 – Cronometer

best software for nutritionists

Last, but certainly not least, on our list is Cronometer, which is the number one dietary adherence software for hospitals, research teams, and health professionals.

Designed to eliminate paper food diaries, which can be inconvenient and easy to lose, the Cronometer app has a built-in food diary.

This allows clients to log their meals, metrics, and exercise, to provide them with accountability for their dietary choices.

If you’re looking for ways to reduce time spent on administrative tasks, then Cronometer is ideal as some of the best nutrition software for professionals.

This is because it allows you to organise clients into groups, where you can then easily view and edit their nutrition targets, settings, and data.

Want to start building a home gym for yourself? You’re in the right place.

  5. Sticking to your Home Gym Routine

The Essentials

When building a home gym, it’s best to have a rough idea of the type of equipment that you will need to get an effective workout.

You want to aim to have the right equipment that will allow you to make as much progress as you would at the gym, otherwise there would be no point in bringing the gym to your home!

building a home gym: dumbbells

Bare minimum essentials

Whether you’re a beginner or someone who has plenty of experience with exercise, if you’re just looking to gain strength, muscle, lose weight, and see some noticeable changes in your appearance then here’s what you’ll need.

The good news is that this equipment takes up minimal space, which is only fair if you’re not looking to start busting out Olympic deadlifts! There’s really no need to use up the extra room if getting fit and toned is your only goal.

#1 – Dumbells

It may not come as a shock, but dumbbells are probably the first thing you should get when building a home gym.

Not only can they be used for endless upper body, lower body, and core exercises, but they’re also one of the best methods of building strength and muscle definition.

Used to bodyweight exercises at home? Step things up with dumbbells!

They’re not always cheap if you buy them brand new, but we’ve seen some great deals online on websites such as Gumtree, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace. However, we’ll talk more about cost in our pricing section.

For a rough idea, here are two dumbbell sets we found on Amazon UK:

DKN Rubber Hex Dumbbell

building a home gym: dkn dumbbell

This is probably one of the most popular and reasonably priced dumbbell sets we’ve come across on Amazon.

It also has 93% 5 star reviews, so that certainly speaks volumes!

Hex Dumbbells are also really nice to look at if that matters to you…

Price: £12.98-124.99

EXTREME FITNESS Hex Dumbell Rubber Weight Sets

building a home gym: extreme fitness dumbbells

Another great set of hex dumbbells that have 86% positive reviews.

One customer writes: ‘Good products at a good price. Why are the other brands so much more expensive?’

We couldn’t agree more; there seems to be no reason for the overly priced dumbbells out there. Keep your eyes open for great deals such as this, and you’ll have a cheap home gym with good quality equipment.

Price: £10.89-94.99

If you’re thinking ‘but I don’t have space for a rack of dumbells, worry not. You can purchase adjustable dumbbells that have 5-in-1 weight settings, yet take up the space of one set. Not too bad!

Mirafit 6 Pair Hex Dumbbells + Storage Tree Kit

home gym equipment

Next on our list of home gym equipment is Mirafit’s Hex Dumbbells.

The set includes the following 6 dumbbells:

  • 2 x 1kg
  • 2 x 3kg
  • 2 x 5kg
  • 2 x 10kg
  • 2 x 15kg
  • 2 x 20kg

Each is a solid cast dumbbell with a rubber coating for enhanced traction and durability.

The set comes with a storage tree to keep your space tidy and professional. The dimensions of the frame are:

  • Height: 95.5cm
  • Width: 61cm
  • Depth: 54cm

This is perfect for tucking away into a corner to maximise your gym space.

Price: £369.95

Opti Dumbbell Tree Set

weights for home gym

Alternatively, if you’re after cheap home gym dumbbells and perhaps don’t need as heavy weights, this next option could be a better fit.

Opti’s range of dumbbells offers the following weights:

  • 2 x 1.1kg
  • 2 x 2.3kg
  • 2 x 4.5kg

The dumbbells come with a compact stand to help keep your workout space tidy.

These are made from vinyl which makes them relatively soft and easy to use, perfect for those starting out their fitness journey.

Price: £30.00

#2 – Adjustable Bench

If you really want to make a go of a home gym, it’ll only feel real with a bench to use your dumbells with. We can’t think of a space that couldn’t fit a bench in, as it’s not something that has to be huge!

A quick browse on Amazon will show you products such as the ones below:

JX Fitness Adjustable Weight Bench

building a home gym: adjustable bench

The first thing that you’ll notice about this bench is that it’s a #1 Best Seller, which speaks volumes. You don’t see that often with cheap home gym equipment!

It holds 85% positive customer reviews and can be adjusted to fit five different positions. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Price: £74.99

Ultrasport All-in-One Weight Bench

building a home gym: ultrasport adjustable bench

On this bench, the backrest has 8 different adjustable settings as well as the seat having 3. Not too bad!

It has been reviewed positively by 86% of customers, and one writes: ‘the bench is brilliant, even better than the ones I used to use in the gym.’

Price: £73.40

If you want to save a bit of cash though, we’d definitely advise checking out some second-hand benches! The more money you save on this, the more dumbbells you can buy…

#3 – Pull-Up Bar

Don’t be scared off by this if you haven’t managed a pull-up yet. It’s just an inexpensive piece of equipment that you should have on standby as you’ll be building up your upper body strength with dumbbells after all!

Everyone has a doorway so there’s no excuse. It takes up next to no space and is an invaluable piece of equipment, as no dumbbell exercise can mimic the movement of pull-ups.

We’ll talk about some alternative types of pull-up bar later (depending which type of home gym you’re building), but for now, here are some suggestions with a reasonable price:

Umi Essentials Door Pull Up and Chin Up Bar

#5 – Exercise Mat

Gym flooring isn’t that necessary for a home gym unless you’re lifting weights that are significantly heavy. That’s where exercise mats come in!

They are essential to have, particularly if you don’t want to damage your floor or injure yourself when doing HIIT or circuit training. They’re also great for comfort purposes.

You can actually find them in pound stores across the UK, but here are some popular online choices to take a look at for the time being:

REEHUT Exercise Mat

building a home gym: exercise mat

As an Amazon’s Choice product with 90% positive reviews, the REEHUT exercise mat already speaks for itself.

It’s 1 ½ inches thick which is certainly thicker than most that you would find in cheap stores around the UK when building a home gym, and is 180 x 61cm.

Price: £15.99

BeMaxx Fitness Interlocking Soft Foam Floor Mats

building a home gym: gym flooring

This 18 piece set of foam flooring is a little different to your average exercise mat, but certainly a great idea if you want to go all out when building a home gym.

The price isn’t bad at all for what you’re getting, especially for an Amazon’s Choice product!

Price: £23.99

Advanced Essentials

So, you’re already a frequent gym goer and you’re looking to do a little more than tone up and lose weight.

You may even want to compete in bodybuilding competitions, but you don’t want to spend a fortune on a gym membership (or you just don’t have time for the gym anymore).

#6 – Barbell

First things first, there is no reason why you can’t do squats or deadlifts at home to get bigger arms fast.

Barbells can be pricey, but you can snap up some good deals online (especially on second hand websites).

Amazon has a fair share of deals for beginners, which you can check out below:

Bodymax 100kg Olympia Iron Barbell

building a home gym: bodymax barbell

It may seem expensive if you’re not used to barbell prices, but 100kg for this price is an absolute steal.

We’d usually raise our eyebrows, but considering the fact that the product has 89% positive reviews it seems as though it is as good of a deal as it appears.

Price: £219

Bodypower 32kg Tri-Grip Vinyl Weight Set

building a home gym: bodypower plates

Is 100kg a little too much for your personal goals? Not to worry, you can save a great deal of money by grabbing a set with lighter plates.

The Bodypower vinyl weight set has 32kg, a much lighter weight for those who want to feel the benefits of barbell rows, squats, and deadlifts but isn’t set on bodybuilding.

Price: £49.99

If you want to get serious about bodybuilding though, you’ll have to invest a good deal more (unless you browse secondhand websites for fitness enthusiasts and gyms selling off old equipment!).

Often barbells are referred to as being one of the foundations of a home gym, especially if you want to start bodybuilding.

#7 – Plates

You can’t have a barbell without plates!

Plates can be expensive depending on the weight that you need as the heavier the weight, the greater the price. It’s also important for you to keep pushing past your personal best and upping the weights that you use if you want to build a lot of muscle, so do keep this in mind.

Here’s a great set that we found from Northern:

CAMO Olympic Bumper Plates

equipment for home gym

If you’re a keen weightlifter, then these camo plates from Northern would make a great addition to your home gym.

Not only do they look great with their unique camo design, but this bundle set features a selection of weights ranging from 5kg upto 25kg, making them a really versatile piece of kit.

Altogether, this set allows you to lift 150kg, meaning you can get to work on big compound movements and squats at home.

If that wasn’t enough, this product has been designed with durability in mind, made of hard-wearing rubber to ensure that they’re of the highest quality.

Price: £449.99 (for set of 10 plates)

If you’re going to make the purchase, remember to order barbell locks alongside them! These will secure the plates to the barbell and prevent them from slipping off. We’d recommend the FYGJ Barbell Clamps from Amazon to get you started!

#8 – Squat Rack

If you’re going to be weight training on a daily basis then you’ll definitely want to pick up a squat rack.

A squat rack is used for squats (surprise), bench exercises, overhead presses, deadlifts, barbell rows, and barbell lunges. It makes working out with a barbell much more diverse, as well as safer in many cases.

You can pick squat racks up for pretty cheap on local secondhand websites or eBay, or you can also find some great deals on Amazon if you’re not keen on shopping second hand.

Here’s a couple of bargains we found on Amazon:

Yaheetech Adjustable Heavy Duty Squat Rack

building a home gym: yaheetech

Considering this squat rack is under £50 it’s already off to a great start. The 77% positive reviews also fight in its favour, and the fact that it has 14 height adjustable pins.

Its height is from 114-179cm, so no matter how tall you are you’ll be safe within this range.

Price: £49.96

METIS Adjustable Squat Rack

home gym set up

Their adjustable squat rack is made from highly durable and strong steel with a black powder coating to create a super professional aesthetic for your gym.

Priced at just under £90, this is a cost-effective way to enhance your home gym.

Price: £89.99

#9 – Kettlebells

These little pieces of equipment are one of our personal favourites. Not only are they a great variation of free weights (as they are technically designed to be used in a different way), they’re also pretty cheap to pick up with the right deal.

One way that they’re different to free weights is that they can be used to incorporate cardio into weight training.

As kettlebells were designed for more dynamic movements, they’re a great way to get your heart pumping without having to run for 20 minutes!

Here’s some great deals on kettlebells when building a home gym:

UK Fitness Store’s Vinyl Kettlebells

#10 – Medicine Balls

If you want to throw some ballistic training onto the table, then medicine balls will be the perfect choice when building a home gym.

They usually come in 2-25kg and they’re great for conditioning and building explosive power.

They’re quite a different exercise to that of dumbells, as you throw and catch them rather than pull against their weight! Check out the benefits of using medicine balls with our article: 9 Benefits of Medicine Ball Training.

Like the sound of them? Try them out here:

BodyRip Medicine Slam Ball

building a home gym: bodyrip medicine ball

An Amazon #1 Best Seller with 92% positive reviews, it’s easy to see why the BodyRip medicine balls made it onto our building a home gym product list.

JLL Slam Ball

building a home gym: JLL power ball

The JLL slam ball is another great choice from the platform, especially with 78% 5-star reviews.

It has a weight range of 5kg-15kg, which is even heavier than the previous product!

One customer writes; ‘the slam ball is sturdy I have used it outside training where it was subjected to a lot of impacts. It held up well with no tearing or ripping, and the sand doesn’t move too much so it is quite stable when using.’

Price: £18.49-33.99

Cardio Equipment

Are you building a home gym but worried that you won’t be getting enough cardio without a state of the art treadmill or exercise bike?

We have the answers to your prayers, especially when it comes to saving an enormous amount of cash.

The truth is that there’s no real need to fork out your life savings on expensive equipment when you can gain just as much cardiovascular exercise from either your own bodyweight or some simple pieces of kit.

#11 – Skipping Rope

Remember using a skipping rope in P.E. lessons or the exhausting games of Double Dutch on the playground?

If your memory is clear enough, you should remember that these exercises can be just as sweat-inducing as running for 20 minutes on the treadmill. They’re also less monotonous, which is always a good thing!

There are a few variations of skipping that you can use, as well as incorporating skipping into HIIT workouts with bodyweight exercises. Click here for powerful jump rope HIIT workouts and get an idea of what your programme could look like!

Skipping ropes don’t have to cost much, and you can grab one for as little as £2.99 on Amazon:

Farabi Skipping Rope Jumping Fitness Boxercise

building a home gym: farabi skipping rope

This product has 71% of positive reviews from 346 customers (which means it’s quite a heavily reviewed product!). It comes in 6 different colours too, which is pretty good considering the price. You might even want one of each for your cheap home gym!

Price: £2.99

Gritin Skipping Rope

building a home gym: exercise rope

If you’re not sure about the previous product, then you can normally rely on an Amazon’s Choice one…

It has been very heavily reviewed (890 customer reviews), and 85% of them are either 5 or 4 star which certainly isn’t bad. The fact that it is adjustable is also really handy, as you can find your optimum length for double unders!

Price: £6.99

#12 – Punch Bag and Boxing Gloves

Another extremely fun and yet forgotten way of getting your cardio workouts in is buying your own punch bag and set of boxing gloves!

Let’s face it, when building a home gym you want to make it something you’re actually going to use. How many treadmills are used as washing hangers? We dread to think…

Whereas if you had a punching bag, it’s almost easy to imagine yourself taking a swing at it every time you walk past!

We can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t have fun with a punching bag, and it seems like the perfect way of doing cardio without realising that you’re even doing it.

#13 – Bodyweight Cardio

This is something that is vastly underrated when it comes to cardio exercises. Why invest in a treadmill when you can get a better workout using your own body weight?

There are countless exercises that you can do this way, as you can probably imagine. Most of them fall under the categories of HIIT or circuit training, and we can vouch that they are much more exciting than long duration cardio.

building a home gym: plank

You could get your cardio done in 10-15 minutes before you hit the weights!

Examples of bodyweight cardio exercises include:

  • Burpees
  • Mountain climbers
  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • High Knees
  • Star jumps
  • Push-ups
  • Planks
  • Moving planks + many more!

You can do them as HIIT training or circuits and then go about your day.

Building a Home Gym: Where to Build It

When you’ve decided which of the essentials you want to use when building a home gym, it’s time to make a start on the gym itself!

The truth is you can almost always make room for a home gym. Even if you have limited space, it’s still very much possible to create a space where you can exercise just as effectively as you could in the gym.

building a home gym: spare room, garage, outdoors

So, where exactly is a good place for building a home gym?

  • Spare room
  • Garage
  • Outdoors (garden or yard)

Have a spare room that you use for storing all of your old rubbish? Got a garage filled with junk? Does your garden or yard have a little extra space?

These are the questions you should start asking yourself if you’re serious about building a home gym. After all, you’re going to need somewhere to put it!

The ideal equipment for a very small space would be:

  • Dumbbells (especially adjustable, take up less room)
  • Resistance bands
  • Exercise Mat
  • Kettlebells
  • Medicine balls
  • Skipping rope
  • Doorway pull-up bar
  • Bench (it sounds big but you should be able to fit one almost anywhere!)

Put all this equipment together (as well as your bodyweight exercise plan for cardio), and you have a really effective home gym that can get you exactly the same results as you would have from going to the gym (unless you’re into full-blown bodybuilding).

building a home gym: bicycle crunches

You may even fit in a few more pieces of kit, but this is a great list to start with if you’re working with an exceptionally small space.

Got a quarter of your garage to claim when building a home gym? Or half of your spare room? This list should be fine. You can even ditch the bench if you need to, and use the exercise mat for weights.

The ideal equipment for a medium-large space would be all of the above plus:

  • Barbell
  • Plates
  • Squat rack
  • Punch bag and boxing gloves
  • Power tower/larger pull-up bar

If you’ve got a medium-large spare room, garage, shed, outdoor space, etc. that you want to use for building your home gym, you should definitely try out the equipment above.

If you wish, you could also include equipment such as a treadmill or exercise/spin bike (we’d recommend being careful about the quality of things like this, however).

You’ll be glad to know that with the above pieces of kit, you’ll definitely be able to make the gains you’d make at the gym without even having to leave your door.

Also, it’s good to note that you can still make a cheap home gym with ‘more expensive’ types of equipment, but we’ll talk more about that later.

Building a Home Gym That You’ll Actually Use

It would be a real shame to put a lot of effort into building a home gym and spending your hard-earned money on it only to give up using it shortly afterwards…

We don’t blame you. There’s not one of us that hasn’t given up on the gym at some time or other, and we are human after all!

building a home gym: thumbs up

However, we’re about to give you some tips to avoid this common pitfall and make sure that you’re building a home gym that you’ll always want to be in.

Creating the right space

Creating the right space for your exercise is probably one of the most important elements to ensuring you’ll stay motivated.

There’s no shame in getting creative when building a home gym that encourages you to exercise. If you think about it, most gyms don’t really have a personalised feel and actually create a repetitive and boring kind of atmosphere. Some people see it as similar to going to work!

No one wants to feel like they’re in a P.E. lesson, or like exercise is something they have to do and have no choice with.

People give up on gym memberships way too easy and the reason is that it either becomes an inconvenience (getting in the way of your everyday life) or starts to feel boring and monotonous.

building a home gym: bicep curl

The simple answer to this when building a home gym is to make sure that neither of these things happens.

Here’s OriGym’s top tips for creating the right space when building a home gym.

#1 – Make it feel like a home gym

If you’re building a home gym then it should feel like one when you’re done. Make it look the part!

This certainly isn’t difficult, and it doesn’t have to cost a lot either. Think about what kind of equipment you’ll have, and what would compliment it nicely. Can you think of anything that the gym has or doesn’t have that you could include in your own?

The idea is to make it feel like somewhere you should be working out in terms of practicality as well as visually.

Some things you could pick up include:

  • Mirrors
  • Ventilation (a good old-fashioned window would do)
  • Lighting
  • Gym flooring

It’s a great idea to have mirrors in your home gym, and even better if you can get hold of some that cover the majority (if not all) of the walls depending on your preference.

Not only will they make the gym look bigger, but they’ll also be important for perfecting your form and monitoring which muscles you’re working.

Ventilation is a must, even if you just workout with a window or door open. Your home gym will need ventilation to stay hygienic and cool enough for you to work out in!

building a home gym: open window

You can play around with lighting depending on your preference, but it will be necessary if you’re working out. Think about it; you’ll be working with heavy weights and various exercise equipment so you’ll need to see what you’re doing!

Gym flooring isn’t compulsory but it would probably make things a lot comfier for you (as well as looking the part). It doesn’t have to be expensive if you’ve got a cheap home gym in mind, and you can pick up 18 pieces from £23.99 on Amazon (as we mentioned earlier).

There’s other little bits and bobs that you can pick up along the way as you begin to work out and get a feel for what you need.

For example, a chalk bucket may be useful if you’re lifting weights, or a whiteboard to keep track of your progress.

#2 – Personalise your space

On the whole, gyms frequently get this part wrong.

Personalisation is key when building a home gym, and is possibly one of the most important factors when it comes to sticking out your new exercise routine. This is the opportunity to have some fun and get inventive!

A few things you might want to think about are:

  • Posters
  • Inspirational quotes
  • Theme/colour scheme
  • Lighting (customised)
  • Sound system
  • TV
  • Other luxuries

Posters make sense, especially if you’re into any particular sports or fitness personalities. Who doesn’t like a poster of Arnie?

Any decorative lettering (this can easily be done D.I.Y.) can also look impressive on your home gym wall and give it some personalisation to balance out the emphasis on work.

The theme may or may not matter to you but for some, it can make a real difference to their workouts and be a great opportunity to put their creativity to work.

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and a cheap home gym can be personalised with a lick of paint and some minor details. Custom lighting can come in to help to create a certain ambience or theme and is also something that can be done economically.

Ever fancied a gym that’s serene, industrial, urban, or rustic, but there’s no such thing in your local area? Make it yourself!

Luxuries are a must for most people and can be accumulated as time goes on.

building a home gym: pool table

Do you ever hit the gym and want an ice cold water or shake to hand? Get yourself a mini fridge.

Do you crave a good playlist when lifting weights without the hassle of headphones? Get a new sound system!

Want to work hard and play hard? A new pool table may be in order…

Once you’re finished with OriGym’s tips for building a home gym, your neighbours will certainly be jealous.

Cheap Home Gym: How much does a home gym cost?

If you’re wondering ‘how much does a home gym cost?’, you’re probably hoping that it won’t be extortionate.

Luckily for you, that’s an area that we can certainly help you with!

If building a cheap home gym is your goal, stick with us to see just how economical a home gym can be.

building a home gym: working out cost

In short, you can easily create a cheap home gym for well under £1000 if that’s your budget.

Alternatively, if you’re willing to spend more on building a home gym and want to kit it out with everything you possibly can, we can also help you there.

Here’s OriGym’s 3 home gym pricing pathways, so you can really get to the bottom of ‘how much does a home gym cost?’.

#1 – The Ultimate Cheap Home Gym: Essentials (Budget: under £1000)

As an estimate of how low-cost a cheap home gym can really be, we’re going to show you how much you can expect to spend when you’re only buying the essentials.

If we take from our section on the essential equipment for building a home gym, we can get a good idea of the price range of each item and how much they would cost together.

This pathway includes:

  • Dumbbells
  • Adjustable bench
  • Pull-up bar
  • Resistance bands
  • Exercise mat

Taken from the specific models of equipment that we included and some other variations online, here’s what you can expect to spend on a cheap home gym that has everything you need.

building a home gym: pathway 1

Lower price: £370 (not with power tower)

Higher price: £560 (with power tower)

As you can see, this is a pretty impressive price and not too much to spend when you think about how much a gym membership can cost you over a year-long period.

If the average gym membership is around £25-30 per month for the top UK gyms, then that’s around £300-360 for the year.

If you create a cheap home gym then you’re going to be saving that amount per year after your one-off payment to kit out your gym… that’s enough for a holiday abroad!

Also, do keep in mind that you can pick up some of this cheap home gym equipment second hand online, and this could even halve the price.

#2 – A Cheap Home Gym with Added Extras (Budget: under £2000)

If you’re wondering ‘how much does a home gym cost?’ when you add in some of those more advanced pieces of equipment, worry no more. We couldn’t write about building a home gym without giving you all the essential pricing info!

OriGym’s second pathway when building a home gym includes the following:

  • Barbell
  • Plates
  • Squat rack
  • Kettlebells
  • Medicine balls
  • Skipping rope
  • Punch bag and boxing gloves

So, how much does it cost when you throw it all together?

building a home gym: pathway 2

Lower price: £953 (with previous pathway’s higher price)

Higher price: £1,663 (with previous pathway’s higher price)

To work out an estimated price for our second cheap home gym pathway, we’ve taken the higher amount from the previous pathway (including a power tower), as we assumed that you would want to add this equipment on top of the minimum essentials.

Hopefully, we’ve given you a good estimate according to what you’ll wish to include in your own cheap home gym, but if you want to adjust anything then, of course, feel free!

NOTE: kettlebells and medicine balls are difficult to price up as the price depends on the brand, the material they’re made out of, which weight you want to purchase, etc. but we’ve provided the best possible estimate for those building a home gym.

#3 – Mega Home Gym (Budget: under £3000)

We’ve still classed this pathway as a cheap home gym as you’ll make some great savings over a few years, but it’s certainly not for those looking to spend under £2000…

The mega home gym pathway is for those who want to mimic the gym as much as possible in their own home, but still in accordance with a reasonable budget. In short, it involves some professional equipment and some added luxuries for your own comfort and enjoyment.

All equipment from the above pathway, including:

  • Treadmill
  • Spin Bike
  • Gym flooring
  • Mirrors
  • Mini fridge

Let’s see how much it all costs when rounded up:

building a home gym: pathway 3

Lower price (with previous pathway’s higher price): £2,228

Higher price (with previous pathway’s higher price): £2,528

Hopefully, now you have a good idea of how to save money when building a home gym! Not every home gym needs a pool and a pulley machine…

You can create a cheap home gym that has everything you need for an effective workout at home, and even add in some luxuries for under £3000. Not too bad if you ask us!

Here’s some Amazon suggestions for the equipment we’ve mentioned in the Mega Home Gym pathway:

PrestigeSports XM-PROIII Treadmill

building a home gym: prestige sport treadmill

As you can see, the reviews for this product reflect it’s popularity as well as quality. Who said you need an industry standard treadmill?

That being said, you should still keep your eyes peeled for deals on non-folding treadmills in your local area and online. Gyms sometimes sell them off when they get a refurb!

JLL S300 Digital Folding Treadmill

building a home gym: treadmill

Here’s a slightly more expensive model, but it also has a significant amount of positive reviews.

One customer writes: ‘I purchased this treadmill in April of 2016 and have used it constantly. Build quality is superb, you really are getting a lot for your money.’ We can’t argue with that!

Ultrasport F-Bike

building a home gym: exercise bike

Being an Amazon #1 Best Seller and an impressive 2,050 customer reviews, this is another cheap home gym product that we can’t seem to fault! We’d highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for a quality exercise bike for home use, or if you’re worried about getting in some cardio alongside all the weight training.

Building a Home Gym: Sticking to Your Routine

Now let’s get to the less desired conversation. Before spending anywhere from £100-£3000 on building a home gym, you want to make sure that you’re going to be able to maintain a regular exercise routine.

After all, what’s the point in building a home gym if it isn’t sustainable for you and your lifestyle?

If you want some in-depth tips on actually creating a programme for yourself, check out OriGym’s article on Nailing Your Home Workout Routine.

If you’ve already got your programme set up and ready to go, then we’re about to walk you through exactly how to stick to it (and prevent giving up after the initial novelty of your home gym wears off).

#1 – Switch up your exercises

building a home gym: cardio machines

So many people fall at the first hurdle, and that is that they become bored with the programme that they’re on. It seems all fresh and motivating at first, but after a few weeks it becomes tedious.

Don’t give up just yet! Remember the reason that you enjoyed it in the first place; it seemed new.

Try a different set of exercises each week that work similar muscle groups (there are an endless amount), and you’ll never get bored.

#2 – Keep things gradual

building a home gym: plates for barbell

You’re not going to be lifting 50kg in your first session (unless you’re already a bodybuilder). Allow yourself room for improvement and don’t push yourself too hard in the early days!

It’s fine to have days where you don’t do as much as others, in fact most exercise programmes follow this rhythm. It’s certainly better to do something rather than nothing, so even if you just do a quick punching bag session before your shower that’s absolutely fine.

In real life, you’re going to have times where you are unable to exercise often, so accept this and work around it rather than feeling disheartened and giving up.

#3 – Exercise with a friend

building a home gym: high five

Depending on your personality this may seem intimidating or strange if you’ve never done it before but trust us, it’s worth a try!

Not only will you motivate and encourage one another, but you’ll also feel a sense of competition (which will actually make you push yourself harder).

You can even enlist their help when you’re building a home gym too!

#4 – Work within your limits

building a home gym: exercise

This is a nice piece of info that most of us neglect. Working within your limits during an exercise programme is crucial when you’re wanting to stay motivated and avoid surrendering before you reach your goals.

Next time you start to set goals for yourself that are unreasonable and too challenging for your current fitness level, stop yourself.

At the end of the day it will only leave you feeling disappointed and you’ll risk abandoning your whole routine. It’s good that you’re excited to push yourself, but use this excitement in a productive way and keep to your current limits!

#5 – Make sure it’s all for yourself

building a home gym: torso

If you’re trying to lose weight or bulk up from building a home gym, be sure that you’re doing so for yourself. If you begin an exercise programme to try and please someone else you’ll be waving the white flag in no time…

Make sure you’re loving what you’re doing and find something that clicks with you. Do you WANT to get up and exercise? Can you see yourself exercising regularly for the rest of your life?

If so, this means that you’re internally motivated (and that’s a great sign). If not, you might want to think first before spending money on building a home gym.

Before you go!

We’ve reached the end of our Ultimate Guide to Building a Home Gym…

Hopefully now you’ve got a solid understanding on what building a home gym involves, as well as how to build a cheap home gym that doesn’t require spending your life savings.

lift gyms edinburgh

EnergyGym is a gym with a twist. It’s run as an entirely not-for-profit organisation, and all money earned is reinvested into the gym and local community. The approach is admirable, and the gym has a commendable history of helping at-risk young people across Edinburgh.

Their stated aim is to create an environment so friendly that the gym seems like a second home. This likely explains its high 4.5/5 rating, and why it has made such a name for itself across the city.

It’s one of the few powerlifting gyms Edinburgh can offer with a specialised Olympic Weight Lifting Club. The club runs three sessions a week with accredited trainers and is a fantastic way to get into lifting. If you’re still not convinced, it offers a free taster session, so you can get a feel for things before taking the plunge with full membership. Other classes include Circuits, Kettlebells and Spin.

The gym even offers a sports massage service, tailored to the individual and using a combination of treatments including massage, mobilisations, spinal manipulations and dry needle – perfect for taking care of yourself after a long workout!

Fitness Soul prides itself on taking a different approach to fitness, and even makes the bold statement that regular gyms are boring. Fortunately, they back up what they say with a gym and fitness programme radically different from anything you’re likely to have experienced before. It’s safe to say that this is one of the most unique gyms in Edinburgh.

The gym places just as much importance on mental and spiritual wellbeing as it does physical fitness, and in doing so creates a gym like no other. The aim is to get fit, improve your mental health and become the best version of yourself.

To accomplish this aim the gym offers several different types of training, including dance and cardio, strength and mobility, and personal training. There’s also a heap of free materials available, including healthy eating guides, a kettlebell guide and the intriguingly titled ‘Guide for Humans.

Any new mums will be pleased to hear that there’s a ‘Fitmamas’ class too, designed specifically to help mothers who want to improve their lifestyle and wellness.

This approach to health extends well beyond the gym itself. Fitness Soul has fostered a strong community vibe and offers retreats, experiences and workshops. This gym really can help with every aspect of your life, and no other Edinburgh gyms offer this range of support.

As you might expect from a gym that places pastoral care at the heart of its agenda, there’s no pressure or hard sell at any point. #16-22 – Best Boxing Gloves for Sparring

#23-29 – Best Professional Boxing Gloves

What are the best boxing gloves?

This is something we’d love to answer off the bat, but it truly depends on what you’ll be using the gloves for.

So, if you’re looking for the answer to ‘what are the best boxing gloves?’, you should have a think about why you’re looking for them in the first place!

Are you new to boxing, or looking for some cheap boxing gloves to try it out? Or are you slightly more experienced and looking out for the best gloves for sparring?

Whatever your story or preference, we’ve got you covered with our list of the best boxing gloves in the UK this year.

Best Cheap Boxing Gloves

#1 –  Mytra Fusion Boxing Gloves

mytra gloves for boxing image

We can’t argue with 98% positive reviews, which is exactly what the Mytra Fusion Boxing Gloves have on Amazon (where they are sold other than the primary website).

One of their most frequently praised features is the heavy-duty synthetic leather which seems to last well. Many customers also state that they would recommend them as one of the best boxing gloves for beginners, so do keep this in mind!

If you want to pick up a pair of gloves for under £20 that are great for rookies, look expensive, can be used for sparring, and last a long time then you should definitely consider them.

Price: £19.99

#2 – Lions Boxing Gloves

best boxing gloves image

For their price, these gloves certainly pack a punch according to their 126 customer reviews (83% of which are positive). They are frequently praised for their ample wrist support and padding, as well as for their synthetic leather exterior which appears to take a good beating.

Looking for a great bargain? The Lions Boxing Gloves will be your saving grace, especially if you’re a beginner and don’t want to spend a fortune. They’re actually the cheapest pair on our list, perhaps making them one of the best pairs for beginners!

They claim to be good for sparring also, so why not give them a shot and let us know what you think?

Price: £11.99

#3 – Farabi Boxing Gloves

farabi boxing product image

Having 89% of 136 reviews being positive on Amazon is an achievement, as well as creating a pair of gloves that are suitable for most types of training and sparring for under £20.

Farabi Sports claim that the gloves are great for use with heavy bags, especially because of their tri-layered shock absorption padding. Going from their reviews, we have no right to dispute this!

When the phrase ‘best cheap boxing gloves’ is mentioned, it can make buyers a little sceptical… but worry not.

Farabi Sports are an established fitness brand that specialises in boxing and martial arts gear, making your purchase a smart one (and giving them an advantage over competitors).

Price: £17.99

#4 – Blok-iT Boxing Gloves

blok it boxing gloves

Applauded in reviews for their quality and fitting, the Blok-iT gloves are perfect for beginners or those simply looking for a bargain. They’re even recommended by trainers on Amazon’s platform, which is a reassurance!

The wrist strap looks pretty supportive and the gloves seem to be well padded, so they would definitely be suitable for bag work and sparring.

They come in a variety of colours, including:

  • White
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Yellow
  • Red
  • Pink

Which means that you can customise your purchase as you see fit (and you can rest assured that you’ll be the most stylish competitor at your next training session!).

They come with free delivery in the UK, making them one of the best boxing gloves in the UK in terms of quality and value.

Price: £23.82

#5 – Lions Focus Pads and Gloves Set

focus pads and boxing gloves image

If you’re into sparring or MMA training or looking to start, this is a great bargain for the price!

Not only does it include a pair of the best cheap boxing gloves but it also comes with the Lions Focus Pads, which are ideal for training. Both the gloves and the pads come in 6 different style options, so you can also customise your purchase.

Usually, if you buy a pair of branded boxing gloves and focus pads on top, the price is over double of what this set costs. No wonder it made it onto our list of the best gloves in the UK!

Take a look at its 91% positive reviews on Amazon for more reassurance if you need to, but we can safely say that this is a great deal.

Price: £17.99-19.99

#6 – POWERSTAR Focus Pads Boxing Gloves

max strength best boxing gloves set image

This set is marginally different in price to the product from Lions, but it does have more reviews to skim through on Amazon’s platform before buying (which may or may not affect your decision!).

The one downside is that they only come in one weight, whereas the Lions Focus Pads give you the option to select different sizes.

However, if you’re a beginner or looking for a bargain then this is still a great buy according to reviews, and we’d certainly recommend it!

Price: £17.45

Best Boxing Gloves for Training

If you weren’t sold on our best cheap boxing gloves section (maybe you’re a pro looking for something a little tougher?), then you won’t be disappointed with the rest of our list!

We’re about to kick things off with the best gloves for training, as this is important to know if you’re feeling a little more serious about boxing or MMA.

#7 – RDX Training Boxing Gloves

rdx boxing gloves

One of the first things you’ll notice about the RDX Training gloves is that they are made from cow-hide leather. This makes them stronger than any that are made from synthetic leather and effectively last longer too.

A quick scroll of their 94% positive reviews on Amazon will show you that they are ideal for training due to their design, namely the fit and wrist support. Many customers seem to think that they are great value for money too which is always a bonus!

Price: £31.99

#8 – Venum Elite Boxing Gloves

venum best boxing gloves set

While made from synthetic leather, the Venum Elite gloves are one of the most popular products when it comes to the best boxing gloves in the UK.

They’re available in either:

  • 10oz
  • 12oz
  • 14oz
  • 160z

This is quite a range in comparison to some of the other products on the market. Not only this, but the Challenger 3.0  model in particular claims to be ‘50% better’ than the Challenger 2.0, which we can say seems pretty true after a brief test. They are good for training as the shock absorption is decent and the improved fit over the previous version helps with protecting your hands!

They have a lot of reviews on Amazon, of which 97% are positive, so it’s hard to argue with their success. Are they the best pair for training? Try them out for yourself and let us know…

Price: £48.98

#9 – Everlast Pro Style Training Gloves

everlast boxing gloves image

The Everlast Pro Style gloves are one of the most reviewed items on our list, and it’s no surprise why. Not only are they a bargain, but they’re great for training according to many Amazon customers.

One obvious advantage to making this purchase would be that you have the reassurance of the manufacturer being a popular fitness brand. Whether this matters to you or not is personal preference, but some people prefer to stick to what they know (and that’s fine!).

Their 75% positive reviews on Amazon show how popular they are with customers, as many have branded them a ‘game-changer’, or more specifically ‘great gloves for training’. We can’t argue with that!

Price: £19.99-37.00

#10 – Valour Strike Red Paw Boxing Gloves

valour strike product image

Valour Strike themselves recommend the 120z as a ‘good choice for someone looking for an all-around training glove that’s a little lighter than the 14oz’, which they also stock in case you want the added weight.

5-star reviews on Amazon brand the product ‘amazing’ and ‘perfect for gym work’, which indicates that it deserves its spot on our list. More reviews state that they are suitable for sparring too!

Price: £26.95

#11 – RDX Boxing Gloves Maya Hide Leather

rdx boxing gloves image

The RDX gloves with maya hide leather are made with ‘Quadro-Dome technology’, which claims to assist the natural alignment of the hand during strikes.

According to the Amazon customer reviews (which are 94% positive), the gloves do exactly that!

The shell-shock gel padding also seems to be a winner, as many customers praise RDX for creating such durable and good-quality gloves that can take a lot of wear and tear.

Many customers have bought multiple pairs from RDX, which is also a reassuring sign that they were built to last.

Price: £30.99

#12 – Adidas Hybrid 100 Boxing Gloves

adidas best boxing gloves image

The name of these gloves will have undoubtedly turned some heads, as we all know a popular brand is usually the go-to for a lot of customers.

However, can they live up to their name?

Their 83% positive review record out of 95 reviews on Amazon would certainly say so, as well as one customer who says: ‘for those more about speed or general fitness these are ideal.’

Their reputation alongside their reasonable price (considering their brand) has earned them their spot on our list of the best boxing gloves for training, and we can’t see them disappearing anytime soon.

Price: £30.07-42.95

#13 – RDX Boxing Gloves for Training  * Amazon’s Choice

rdx boxing gloves image

Being an Amazon’s choice product as well as having 95% positive reviews is pretty impressive, and it’s no wonder why this pair of RDX training gloves have made it onto our list.

One customer wrote: ‘absolutely brilliant product. Have shown no sign of fading despite the punishment they take against a heavy bag, and they do exactly what they were bought for,’ and only faulted them for being quite tight (but this depends on preference!).

From what we can see, they are a great option for those looking for the best boxing gloves for training and we’d recommend trying them out for yourself.

Price: £25.99-28.99

#14 – Everlast Protex 2 Training Gloves

On the lookout for gloves with lightweight foam padding and incredible ventilation? You’re in the right place.

One customer on the Amazon platform praised them by saying: ‘this is an EXCELLENT pair of gloves for training, even at 16oz they feel light, flexible, nimble, and agile. They are very, very durable.’

If you want a branded purchase that is also full leather, the Everlast Fighter gloves are for you.

Price: £49.99

#15 – Adidas Hybrid 300 Boxing Gloves

adidas hybrid gloves

So you like the look of the Adidas Hybrid 100 gloves, and now we’re here to confuse you even more…

Seriously, you should still consider these gloves before you make your final decision. They actually have 88% 5-star reviews on Amazon, as well as some glowing reviews from as recently as this month.

At the end of the day, the gloves are by Adidas and there’s not a fitness enthusiast alive that doesn’t know of the brand.

If you want to go with a trusted and well-known brand in your search for the top gloves for training, then this pair of Adidas Hybrid gloves should certainly make it onto your shortlist.

Price: £90.97-129.95

#16 – Hayabusa T3 Boxing Gloves

hayabusa sparring boxing gloves

We’ll jump straight into our section on the top gloves for sparring with this review from last month; ‘I would buy these again, no hesitation – after one year they still look and feel great.’

Perhaps one of the main things that boxers look for are gloves that are durable and last well during sparring (especially considering how expensive they can be). The Hayabusa Gloves are evidently a great choice for long-lasting pair!

They’re also made with 4 interlocking splints for wrist support, and this is actually praised in the reviews with one customer stating ‘the wrist support is unrivalled and the gloves look and feel great.’

Need we say more?

Price: £105

#17 – Valour Strike Sparring Boxing Gloves  * Amazon’s Choice

VALOUR STRIKE BOXING GLOVES

90% 5-star reviews is impressive on Amazon, but so is a pair of 16oz gloves for under £30! (they’re currently on sale).

It’s a good job that the Valour Strike Sparring Gloves have both of these things. They also have the ability to customize the fitting of the glove with the help of an extra velcro attachment, and this is great for those wanting to improve their durability for sparring.

All in all a great deal for a pair of quality gloves, and it’s clear to see why they’ve made it onto our list of the best boxing gloves for sparring.

Price: £22.95-34.95

#18 – Leone 1947 Shock Gloves

leone best boxing gloves

Perhaps one of the most retro-looking designs, why may or may not make them one of the best pairs for sparring based on visuals! (Seriously, these would make any sparring partner jealous).

It’s a good job their reviews match their appearance with one customer adding: ‘I’ve tried several different gloves but for me, this glove is near perfect, and for the price even better!’.

Price: £51.59

#19 – Cleto Reyes Lace Up Gloves

cleto reyes lace up professional boxing gloves

Another gorgeous retro design but in a higher price range.

That being said, Cleto Reyes have been manufacturing and selling boxing equipment since 1945 and certainly haven’t skimped on this model. If you’re looking for gloves that have been used by generations of professional boxers then they may be the perfect match for you.

Furthermore, if you’re searching for a quality pair of sparring gloves and have a large budget (perhaps you’ve been boxing for a while), then we’d at least recommend taking a look.

Price: £188.79

#20 – Venum Challenger 3.0 Boxing Gloves

venum training gloves

Apart from their impressive appearance and colour range, these gloves seem to be loaded up on padding yet nice and light. If you’re looking for the best boxing gloves for sparring that aren’t too heavy, check them out!

They also have a fully attached thumb (rather than one that has been sewn on separately), so you can rest assured that twisting is a lot less likely to happen.

Price: £47.32

#21 – Fairtex Super Sparring MMA gloves

best boxing gloves for sparring

The Fairtex Super Sparring Gloves are in a mid-way price range

Compared to the Cleto Reyes gloves and Valour Strike, they provide a nice middle-ground for those wanting to spend less than £100, yet not wanting to risk a significantly cheaper purchase.

While there’s nothing to say that cheaper gloves can’t be great, we completely hear you and that’s why we’ve included gloves from all price ranges.

With 96% positive customer reviews,  the Fairtex gloves fit the bill quite nicely. Check them out for yourself!

Price: £79.99

#22 – Beast Gear Boxing Gloves

best gear boxing gloves image

Last but not least on our sparring section is this snazzy-looking pair of Beast Gear Boxing Gloves.

Not only are they stunning to look at, but they are also made of genuine cowhide leather (which is arguably the strongest material).

With 100% 5 star reviews, these gloves certainly have a lot going for them. They’re praised for their durability as well as their wrist support, and for their price despite being made from genuine leather.

Price: £49.97

Best Professional Boxing Gloves

Still not found your perfect pair of boxing gloves? There’s still hope yet.

If you’ve come this far then it’s likely nothing to do with the price or manufacturing of our previously mentioned models. But what else could we have missed out?

Professional boxing gloves. They have one distinguishing feature in particular that stands them apart from the rest, and that is that they are laced up rather than strapped together with velcro.

Also, they’re used in professional boxing matches.

You may have to spend an absolute fortune to obtain gloves that match up with the ones used in televised fights, but here are the closest to professional boxing gloves that we could find on Amazon!

#23 – Everlast Fight Gloves

everlast best professional boxing gloves image

We’re starting out with a well-known brand that has a lot going for them.

Apart from the fact that they are possibly the most prevalent brand in televised matches and clearly made of good stuff, they also have the professional boxing gloves look…

They come in red/grey, white/black, and grey/black, so you can even collect them all if you have the spare cash (and you’re heading into professional matches anytime soon).

You may just want to buy them for their alternative method of wrist support (or to show off to your sparring partners), and we can’t judge you there.

Price: £99.99

#24 – Fairtex Fight Gloves

fairtex boxing gloves

Having 96% positive reviews and being vastly popular, the Fairtex Fight Gloves clearly have the Amazon customer’s stamp of approval.

One customer even writes: ‘I have been using these gloves for my boxing sessions and they are easily the best purchase I have ever made.’

Can you argue with that? We can’t!

They also come in a good range of colours and designs if that’s what you’re looking for in a pair of professional boxing gloves. It’s always good to stand out!

Price: £89.99

#25 – Cleto Reyes Official Fight Boxing Gloves

cleto reyes lace up professional boxing gloves

We’ve praised Cleto Reyes previously in this article for having one of the most retro designs when it comes to the best boxing gloves, but this time they’ve really outdone themselves.

Each colour design is truly stunning, especially when paired with the lace-up wrist support. There’s just something about these gloves that screams authentic!

Maybe it’s the fact that they’re padded with horsehair as well as foam or their classic appearance, but regardless we can guarantee that you’ll look like a true champ in this pair of professional boxing gloves.

Like what you see from Cleto Reyes? Click here for more designs on the Geezers Boxing website.

Price: £244.99

#26 – Ampro Hybrid Powertech Hook and Loop Sparring Glove

ampro lace up professional boxing gloves

Another stunning pair of professional boxing gloves made by a trusted brand that has been manufacturing products in the industry since 1955.

They have a hybrid design that is perfect for a balanced mix of speed, comfort, power, and protection, and although they come at a high price point, this is reflected in the incredible quality of their construction.

These boxing gloves have a Powertech layered foam for natural fist position, reducing hand fatigue while increasing support.

Price: £99.99

#27 – Lonsdale Men’s L60 Lace Up Glove

lonsdale boxing gloves

Are you looking for something with a unique yet classic appearance?

These gloves provide exactly that, as well as being a well-known and trusted brand that is prevalent in the industry. They’re made of 100% genuine cowhide too, making them stronger than other gloves that are made of PU leather.

Their price isn’t too bad considering that they’re both professional boxing gloves and made from real leather. Is the gold finish worth it? We think so!

Price: £125.50

#28 – Hayabusa Classic Black Lace Up Leather Boxing Gloves

hayabusa boxing gloves

If you want a visually impressive pair of lace-up professional boxing gloves, then these could be exactly that. Not only are they unique in their simple yet hardcore appearance but they’re also constructed from genuine cowhide!

They’ve only been released on Amazon recently hence the lack of reviews, but the two 5 star reviews that have been submitted so far are from this month alone.

One reads: ‘easily the best pair of laces I’ve owned. Didn’t even need to be broken in.’ This is a good sign if you ask us!

Price: £60-95

#29 – Valour Strike Pro Red Leather Boxing Gloves

valour strike best boxing gloves

Last but certainly not least on our list of the best boxing gloves are the Valour Strike Pro Gloves.

If you’re a fan of Valour Strike (which you may well be considering their popularity as one of the best brands that you can buy online), you won’t be disappointed with their take on professional boxing gloves.

First things first, they have a full-red finish which likens them to the gloves seen in every boxing video game. They’re pretty much what your mind pictures when the phrase ‘boxing gloves’ is mentioned!

One interesting thing to note is that they come with both laces and velcro to allow for maximum support. Had issues with gloves slipping off in the past? The Valour Strike gloves won’t be going anywhere.

Considering that they’re made from genuine leather, they do have a highly competitive price.

Want to get a taste for professional boxing gloves without spending an absolute fortune? You’re in the right place!

Price: £44.95-69.95

FAQs

Check out our section on the best cheap boxing gloves, or even the cheaper models of sparring gloves if this is something you’re serious about.

#2 What boxing gloves do professionals use?

In organised boxing matches, participants use professional boxing gloves.

Professional boxing gloves are usually made from cowhide leather, stuffed with horsehair (or a mix of horse hair and foam), and are tied together with laces rather than velcro.

#4 What oz boxing gloves should I get?

If you’re asking ‘what oz boxing gloves should I get?’, then you’re definitely taking your time with your purchase rather than buying on impulse. This is the best way to find the best boxing gloves for you!
