One way you can enter the fitness industry is through a personal trainer internship. This is a great way to gain valuable skills and experience when starting your career.

We’ll explore why personal trainer internships may be right for you and how you can decide on the best way to start your new career.

Table Of Contents:

But first, if you’re passionate about kickstarting a career in fitness OriGym’s Personal Training Diploma should be your first choice. Gain vital experience and knowledge required to train clients 1-to-1 with bespoke workout programmes.

What Are Personal Trainer Internships?

Woman Thinking About Personal Trainer Internships

Personal trainer internships are programmes which allow those who want to pursue a career as a PT to gain valuable work experience in a gym or health club setting – you may also see these referred to as health and fitness internships.

These personal trainer internships teach aspiring or newly qualified PTs how to successfully conduct training sessions and the best way to help clients achieve their goals.

However, you should be aware the requirements of each programme can vary. For example, this Personal Trainer Internship below from Universal Fitness is a fully funded training opportunity:

Personal Trainer Internship

This means your Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications will be paid for by your employer while you work at the facility.

However, this won’t be the case for every PT internship. Certain establishments will require you to be fully qualified prior to the internship so you can shadow those with more experience. Keep in mind, some gyms may not advertise these opportunities publicly and you may have to contract them directly – think of it as more of a voluntary role.

With this in mind, be sure to check these requirements before as they will vary from each establishment.

Why Should You Pursue A Personal Trainer Internship?

Trainer With Elderly Woman During PT Internship

Personal trainer internships are a great way to gain hands-on experience and decide if this career is the right fit for you. Not only is this an ideal opportunity to improve or develop your knowledge but it allows you to build up your professional network.

For example, by interacting with mentors and colleagues who have prior industry experience, you can learn valuable business skills in areas such as gym maintenance, communication and client retention.

Working with experienced personal trainers can also give you a greater understanding of how the industry works. You may receive valuable tips such as how to succeed in interviews or how to kickstart a business of your own.

Pursuing these internships will also be incredibly beneficial if you’re considering a career change to personal training . You’ll get to see typical duties and responsibilities which will help you decide if this career move is the right one.

It can also help you determine which clients and demographics you most enjoy working with, allowing you to decide on a potential specialisation. Find out more about this with our article ‘Top Personal Trainer Specialties’.

How To Find Personal Training Internships

#1 – Check Job Listings Sites

Personal Trainer Internship Job Listings

One of the easiest ways to see if any gyms in your area are offering health and fitness internships is to check out online jobs boards such as:

Personal Trainer job opportunities will be posted by companies, detailing the role, any requirements, and pay if applicable, such as the example below:

Personal Trainer Internships Example

Most job listings will also provide details of roles and responsibilities. You can then easily send your CV to the company either manually or by uploading it to your profile.

#2 – Contact Gyms

Female Gym Manager

Another way to get a personal training internship is to simply reach out to gyms and contact them about any opportunities they may have. Research some local gyms in your area by checking out their websites and customer reviews.

If they don’t have any current personal trainer internships, you could alternatively ask to shadow their employees. You can do this by emailing or phoning the gym. However, some may require you to submit an application or personal statement before they accept you to shadow their PTs.

We’ll help you get started – check out our article ‘9 Best Gyms To Work For As A Personal Trainer’.

#3 – Contact Personal Trainers Directly

Female Personal Trainer Giving Thumbs Up

You can also contact personal trainers directly and ask them for internship opportunities. This is a great idea if you want to specialise in a particular area of fitness such as weight loss or training elderly clients.

Shadowing or watching a personal trainer who works in areas you want to pursue is a good way to learn tips and understand the best way to deal with training certain clients. You can find relevant personal trainers to you by checking out social media profiles or their websites.

To find out more about developing your skills as a PT further, check out our article: Continuing Education For Personal Trainers.

#4 – Check Out Government Websites

Woman Smiling Using Laptop to Look for Personal Trainer Roles

To find a personal training internship, you can also take a look at websites such as Gov.UK for opportunities. These listed roles will allow you to gain a qualification through different organisations that offer programmes to people who meet the specific criteria.

However, as these might be listed as ‘apprenticeships’, you may need to research these in more detail to ensure they apply to you.

Before we continue, these articles below may be of interest to you:

Personal Training Internships vs Vocational Training: Which Is Right For Me?

Smiling Personal Trainer During Internship

Right now, you may be unsure of whether you should pursue a personal trainer internship or vocational training. Vocational training focuses on courses which focus on practical skills and experience rather than exams with the aim of preparing you for a specific career.

Both offer valuable routes for getting into the fitness industry, but one may be a better fit for you over the other.

Here’s 6 points to consider when weighing up your options:

#1 – Availability

Searching Online for Personal Trainer Apprenticeships

Although PT internships are available, they’re difficult to come across. Whilst the job opportunities are there but they are often limited in terms of their frequency and how many spaces are available.

For example, an employer may only be hiring one potential candidate, which means you’d have to compete against others in order to qualify. Alternatively, employers may choose to prioritise creating apprenticeships instead, which is an entirely different process.

This is why Personal Trainer Courses are a great option for those looking to break into the health and fitness industry. These courses are readily available, with hundreds of students enrolling every day.

Courses such as our Personal Trainer Diploma allow you to gain qualifications needed to break into industry (both Level 2 and Level 3 respectively) whilst also gaining the necessary practical experience.

#2 – Entry Requirements

Handshake for Meeting Entry Requirements for Personal Trainer Internship

Many personal training internships will require you to interview for the position. This will be treated similar to a job interview, where you will need to compete with other candidates for the job vacancy.

In contrast, vocational training providers will have their own entry requirements in place, but these will be significantly more flexible and won’t require an interview.

For example, to enrol on OriGym’s Level 3 Personal Training Course, you will first need to obtain a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification and be aged 16+. This in part, is why our PT Diploma is so popular, as it combines both of these courses together.

#3 – Flexibility

Study for a Vocational Personal Trainer Course

If you prefer to work at your own pace, vocational courses will be more suited to you. For example, our Online Personal Trainer Courses are great for those who prefer to study independently.

Once enrolled, students will be able to learn at their own pace, completing virtual coursework and assessments with no fixed deadlines to meet.

Whereas most personal trainer internships will provide you with set hours they expect you to work. Again, this will be similar to a job, and you will be expected to work all your allotted shifts. This can be more difficult if you have other work or family commitments, especially if you’re shadowing PTs.

#4 – Practical Experience

Personal Trainer with Client

People often choose internships as they want hands-on experience, believing that vocational training is all theoretical learning. However, this is simply not the case – vocational training students can also get hands-on practical experience working in the gym too.

At OriGym, students can attend practical workshops from our training venues located around the UK. These weekend sessions provide great opportunities to work with likeminded individuals on their course and get beneficial face to face feedback from expert tutors.

Additionally, OriGym students will also be assessed practically too, in order to ensure that they can meet the physical demands of the position.

must complete practical assessments and attend workshops at one of our venues. This is so our students are provided with this practical experience to help them succeed in the fitness industry.

#5 – Cost

Cash and Coins

When it comes to vocational courses vs a personal trainer internship, you should be aware you do have to pay for courses to gain these qualifications and experience.

However, providers will often have payment plans or allow you to spread the cost of your course over a series of months. For example, our students have the option to set up a payment plan with 0% finance and no guarantor.

For further insight into this topic, check out our article exploring ‘How Much Does It Cost to Become a Personal Trainer’.

#6 – Career Outcomes

Men Shaking Hands

Most people view a personal training internship objective as securing a job afterwards. However, keep in mind that unless stated otherwise in the application, employers are under no obligation to hire, or even interview you for a full-time position at the end of your programme.

You should be aware course providers like OriGym offer career support following the completion of your qualification. This includes a guaranteed job interview with one of our corporate partners.

Even better, gaining your qualifications and experience from a provider rather than an employer gives you much more freedom to choose where you work. You could even decide to kickstart your own business, with expert resources provided to you upon completion, rather than being largely limited to the place you did your internship.

Are Personal Trainer Internships And Apprenticeships The Same Thing?

Apprenticeships are paid positions and typically last a longer period of time than an internship. Most apprenticeships will be listed on the Gov.UK website, as shown in this example below:

Personal Trainer Internship Apprenticeship Listing

Paid PT internships are harder to come by and most of these will be in the form of ‘shadowing’, meaning you’re less likely to be paid. Internships have more of a focus on providing students and recent graduates with practical experience and career options. These are usually seen as less of a job than apprenticeships and more of a way to enhance your skills & experience.

You should also be aware some companies may use the two words interchangeably. Make sure you read the listing carefully and understand what kind of role it is, such as whether you’ll be getting paid or are considered a personal trainer intern and simply shadowing.

To find out more about this, check out our article on Personal Trainer Apprenticeships Explained.

Any gym can become a HYROX affiliate gym and we’ll break down how you can turn yours into one!

Table of Contents:

But before we get started, if you’re looking to advance your career as a gym owner, check out our Level 4 Personal Trainer Courses to continue developing your skills and knowledge. Find out more by downloading our course prospectus here.

What is a HYROX Partner Gym?

Training at a HYROX Partner Gym

The HYROX Gym Affiliation Program is a partnership that gyms can apply for in order to become a part of the brand’s growing community.

Once approved, affiliated gyms are provided with the services, tools, and other benefits to successfully integrate HYROX into their programming. This can help to grow said business through lead generation, member retention and HROX partner promotions.

HYROX benefits your gym with the tools necessary to host their classes, training days, and programmes. Discounts and benefits from HYROX partner brands as well as marketing and communication support are all provided too.

Members also benefit from this affiliate programme by gaining entry discount codes, official HYROX classes, training, and advice as well as access to the HYROX partner gym area at their specific events.

What is The Difference Between a HYROX Affiliate TRAINING CLUB vs PERFORMANCE CENTRE?

Clients Training at a HYROX Partner Gym

If you want your venue to become a HYROX partner gym there are 2 different options you can apply for.

 • HYROX AFFILIATE TRAINING CLUBS
 • HYROX PERFORMANCE CENTRES

Both of these options are considered to be ‘partners’ but the requirements for each differ.

We should start by saying, all gyms can become a HYROX TRAINING CLUB. However, only premium venues will meet the necessary requirements in order to become PERFORMANCE CENTRES.

Let’s look at both of these affiliation options and their unique requirements, in order to understand whether you’re eligible.

How to Become a HYROX Affiliate Gym?

Become a HYROX TRAINING CLUB

Clients After Session at a HYROX Partner Gym

As a gym owner, you’ll be happy to know any gym is suitable to become a HYROX partner gym. HYROX themselves state on their website:

Any kind of gym is suitable to become a HYROX TRAINING CLUB. Your inspiration and our expertise will be the ultimate combination for success. Whether you are a small individual gym or a large chain, the HYROX TRAINING CLUB belongs in any gym.

However, there are three steps you need to follow first to become a HYROX TRAINING CLUB:

#1 – Ensure Your Gym Meets The Standards

Ensuring Gym Meets HYROX Partner Gym Standards

To become a HYROX TRAINING CLUB, the first thing you’ll need to check is if you have the right equipment so you can effectively run their programmes.

HYROX provides a detailed breakdown of what equipment you’ll need and this includes:

 • Treadmills or space to run 1k: Treadmills or running machines are ideal, but if you have an open space large enough for clients to train for their 1km run that will work too.
 • SkiErg Machine: This is for the first station which requires a 1000m pull.
 • Sled Push, Sled Track and Bumper Plates: This station requires a 50m sled push and the sled weight will vary between 102kg – 202kg. They also suggest a good quality sled and bumper plates or a 100m sled track.
 • Sled Pull: Similar to the Sled push , you will need the sled, sled track and bumpers but also a rope for this station.
 • Rowing Machine: HYROX recommends a Concept2 rower.
 • Kettlebells: For the competition you need weights of 2 x 16kg, 2x 24kg , 2 x 32 kg for the Farmer’s Carry.
 • Sandbags: You will need 10kg, 20kg, 20kg, 30kg.
 • Wall Balls: You will need 4kg, 6kg, 6kg, 9kg.

Although this may seem like a lot of equipment to have or purchase, these are needed to effectively run these sessions at your own gym.

Two of the main questions HYROX requires gym owners to consider is:

 1. Is your equipment and gym space suitable to facilitate HYROX classes?
 2. Is there enough space to host a smaller scaled down HYROX event?

If you answered yes to these questions, this may be an excellent opportunity to expand your business.

#2 – Apply Via HYROX365 Account

Apply to Become a HYROX Partner Gym

Next, you’ll have to create a HYROX365 account. You can do this by signing up to the HYROX365 Portal. Once done, you can activate your account by using the verification code – If you don’t receive it, check your spam folder!

Once you’ve logged into your HYROX365 account, you can click the button at the bottom labelled ‘BECOME A HYROX TRAINING CLUB TODAY’. You can then e-sign the online affiliation agreement to begin this process.

This is where you can choose whether you want to pay your affiliate fee on a monthly or yearly basis.

Following these steps, you’ll be prompted to sign an electronic affiliate agreement. A preview of what this contract looks like can be found here.

If you’d like to find out more information about becoming a HYROX TRAINING CLUB, you can do so by emailing them at affiliate.dach@hyrox.com

#3 – Activate Account & Pay The Affiliate Fee

Paying HYROX Partner Gym Affiliate Fee

Once you’ve created your profile and signed the agreement, you’ll then need to activate your account – This process is important and cannot be skipped!

You’ll need to fill out the check out process by providing your billing address and payment details, in order to finalise your registration and secure your position as a HYROX TRAINING CLUB

The cost of this affiliation is not promoted on the UK site, however, the HYROX’s EU site states that this comes in at €90 per month.

The Best Sports Massage Courses in the UK Compared

Sports Massage Course Reviews

The first thing you should do when deciding on the best sports massage courses in the UK is to conduct wider research on a range of training providers. This means you shouldn’t just settle on the cheapest option or one with high reviews.

It’s important to have a well rounded overview of different courses so you can truly find the right qualification for you. Examples of things you should ask when looking at sports massage courses include:

 • How much is it?
 • Is the course regulated?
 • Do you get practical experience?
 • Are there packages offered?
 • Is there post course support?
 • What are the reviews like?

To help with your decision, we’ve conducted research into 6 of the best sports massage courses and their providers. In this article, we’ll examine the factors listed in the table below in greater detail, highlighting why they are important for the overall quality of a sports massage course.

SMT Course Compared Table

What Factors Legitimise The Best Sports Massage Courses?

When researching the best sports massage courses in the UK, there are various factors which help confirm whether these courses meet industry standards. Let’s break these down!

#1 – Awarded by Focus Awards

In the UK, there are 4 major awarding bodies or governing bodies for the health and fitness industry:

 • Focus Awards
 • YMCA Awards
 • Active IQ
 • NCFE

The majority of the fitness industry are certified by these awarding bodies. When your course is completed, the awarding body will appear on your certificate.

The best sports massage course will always be awarded by legitimate governing bodies. While employers don’t prioritise one awarding body over another, they will certainly check the legitimacy of your qualification when hiring you.

#2 – Ofqual Regulation

Ofqual (the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) is similar to the organisation Ofsted. It is responsible for regulating all vocational training qualifications in the UK.

Although individual training providers deliver the qualification, Ofqual sets out:

 • The content of the course
 • How the course is taught
 • How students are assessed
 • How the curriculum is set out

The reason for this is to ensure consistency across the fitness industry. This is so whichever provider a student chooses, they can be assured the education standard of their course meets the national standard. For example, a Level 3 Sports Massage Course will always be ‘Level 3’.

As all awarding bodies must report to Ofqual, these are then catalogued in their official registry as you can see below:

Focus Awards Sports Massage Therapy

This registry is crucial for checking whether your chosen qualification is considered among the best sports massage courses in the UK.

#3 – Why Are These Factors Important?

If your qualification isn’t regulated by Ofqual, it’s unlikely employers will consider it legitimate. This is because employers will specifically ask for a Level 3 qualification such as this job advertisement from Willow Chiropractic below:

Willow Chiropractic Sports Massage Therapy

The qualification being labelled ‘Level 3’ shows it’s a legitimate course and adheres to the highest standards of the health and fitness industry.

Get Value For Your Money When Choosing an SMT Course

Best Sports Massage Course Cost

When researching the best sports massage courses in the UK, it’s important to take your own financial situation into consideration when settling on a provider such as the ones shown below:

As you can see, OriGym is on the lower end of pricing. However, while FitAsylum has the lowest price, they have the lowest number of reviews.

You should keep in mind, cheaper doesn’t always mean better. If something is too good to be true, it usually is! The factors mentioned in the table earlier are reasons why some courses are more expensive than others.

Quality of the learning materials, study options, and post course support are all factors which influence the price of a sports massage course.

However, more expensive courses don’t always reflect the quality of the course either. More expensive providers will often accept government ‘Advanced Learner Loans’ as funding. While some students feel this makes the price justified, this will come at an additional cost.

Check The SMT Course Providers Payment Plan Options

You should be aware, the best sports massage will offer payment plans to make their courses more affordable. This allows you to spread the cost of the course and repay in manageable chunks rather than pay for it upfront in one go.

As we at OriGym want health and fitness education to be accessible for all, we have the option of payment plans. However, not all providers offer this so you should be aware of having to pay a lump sum.

Quality Sports Massage Courses Will Never Hide Fees

Even some of the best sports massage course providers will have hidden fees. These can be extra costs depending on the provider, but may include:

 • Exams
 • Resits
 • Certification Fees
 • Administration Fees

At OriGym, we offer free unlimited resits for our students and no hidden fees, meaning the price of the course is exactly what you’ll pay!

The Best Sports Massage Courses in the UK Provide Practical Experience

During your research of the best sports massage course providers, you should consider ones with practical experience which is very important with a practice like sports massage therapy.

The best course providers will offer workshops to develop these skills as gaining practical experience is necessary to develop your knowledge.

For example, OriGym offers unlimited workshops, to ensure our students are more than equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical experience needed to succeed in this industry.

The Best Sports Massage Courses Will Have Quality Virtual Learning Resources

Best Sports Massage Online Learning

You should also examine the quality of learning materials for the course providers you’re interested in. When studying, you’ll want a course which keeps you engaged and this is often done by having a range of materials.

Engaging materials such as videos, online lectures, and interactive eLearning highlight the quality of a course. At OriGym, students learn through our award nominated eLearning platform ‘Student Zone’.

By providing different materials, we aim to keep our students engaged, making it much more likely they will build and consolidate their knowledge.

Tutors Play an Integral Role in the Best Sports Massage Courses

Best Sports Massage Course Tutors

The best sports massage courses will be taught by fully qualified and experienced professionals who have worked in the industry. Having qualified professionals who have also been through the same journey as their students is crucial.

Tutors will be able to provide more support and understand exactly what students need to succeed as they can draw from their own experiences. For example, all tutors at OriGym have qualifications in the subjects they teach as well as previous industry work experience.

You will also want to have plenty of support from your tutors and be able to reach out to them regarding your studies.

At OriGym, our students can contact tutors 7 days a week through:

 • Email
 • Phone
 • Chatbox

This is why it’s important to check with the level of support even the best sports massage courses provide as this can make a difference between passing and failing your course!

The Best Sports Massage Course Providers Will Offer Career Support

Not only should you research the quality of the course itself but it’s also important to see what support you receive post qualifying. The best sports massage courses will not only provide quality education but also career services to help graduates succeed in the future.

It’s important to prepare students for their career which is why OriGym offers:

 • Mock interviews
 • Free marketing & business course
 • CV analysis and distribution
 • Alumni discounts on industry-leading products
 • Guaranteed job interviews with corporate partners

Check out our table below to see what career services you’ll receive from each provider and who will prepare you for success:

As you can see, there’s reasons as to how we’ve helped 92% of OriGym students find employment after graduating.

Location Can Determine What SMT Course Is Best For You

Best Sports Massage Courses Location

Where a course is located is important to consider when researching the best sports massage courses in the UK. As practical experience is crucial for developing your skills and knowledge, you’ll want a provider with multiple accessible locations.

Some providers may only have one fixed location, making it more difficult for students to attend sessions. For example, if you’re looking for the best sports massage course in London, you’ll want locations which are easy to reach, especially if you’re attending multiple workshops or assessments.

For example, OriGym has multiple UK locations, reducing the distance our students need to travel for their practical sessions.

The Best Sports Massage Courses Will Have Good Reviews

Best Sports Massage Course 5 Star

A great way to gain an overall understanding of the quality of a sports massage course provider is to check out company reviews. This allows you to receive first hand accounts of a student’s experience and how they found the course.

To find accurate reviews, you should check impartial sites such as:

To leave reviews on these sites, you have to be a verified customer, meaning the amount of false information is limited. Comparing the best sports massage courses in the UK through reviews means you can see how popular a provider is.

For example, take a look at our comparison table below:

Best Sports Massage Courses Compared Reviews

In fact, it’s an ideal point in your life to make a change as you’ll have a better sense of self, including what professional goals you want to achieve and what sectors interest you. This will make the jump less intimidating, as you’ll be pursuing a position that genuinely interests you.

From your previous career you’ll also have plenty of transferable skills, including:

 • Problem Solving

 • Communication
 • Project Management

Prior interview experience will also greatly benefit you, as you’ll have a better understanding of what employers are looking for and how to remain calm during the process.

Are There Any Benefits to a Career Change Later in Life?

Research has shown people making later-life career shifts had less stress, increased emotional well-being, and were likely to say they ‘felt like a new person’. While we understand a career change at 40 may seem overwhelming, there are plenty of benefits to starting a new job later in life and we’ll break some of these down:

#1 You Can Find a Role That Aligns with Your Lifestyle and Goals

Change careers at 40 to find a role that aligns with your goals

Many people change careers as a stepping stone towards a larger professional goal, for example, they may have an interest or hobby that they wish to pursue.

A great example of this is the health and fitness industry, as enthusiasts often become interested enough to make a career out of their passion. This is often because of how much it aligns with their lifestyle and becomes a large part of it.

If you’re spending most of your time engaging in an interest, why not turn it into your career?

#2 A Career Change Can Renew Your Passion

Careers change at 40 can renew your passion

Changing your career can reignite your enthusiasm in a particular past interest that has been lost with your current job role. Changing your career allows you to pursue work that aligns much more with your current lifestyle, values, and goals, allowing for a fresh start with new challenges and learning opportunities.

FAQs

1 – Are There Any Challenges When Changing Careers In Your 40s?

Challenges with career change at 40

Changing careers in your 40s can present challenges such as adapting to a new work environment, competing with younger candidates, and potentially starting at a lower level or salary.

However, as mentioned above, many people successfully transition by leveraging their existing skills, gaining new qualifications, and networking strategically. You will work out your own way of overcoming these obstacles.

2 – Will I Experience Age Bias?

Age bias if I change my career at 40

You may encounter some age bias when switching to a career. However, you should be aware that under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal to discriminate against a person because of their age.

Many employers will actually prefer a seasoned candidate with plenty of transferable skills and experience, highlighting how your maturity is an asset.

For example, in the health and fitness sector there is a growing demand for fitness professionals who cater to older demographics. In this situation, you can emphasise your age when marketing your service.

3 – What If I Have Young Children?

What if I have young children and change my career at 40

You can also look at freelance work as this offers plenty of flexibility and allows you to be your own boss. For some inspiration, check out our article on the ‘How to Become a Freelance Personal Trainer’.

It’s also important to build a support network for childcare and also evaluate finances to ensure stability during the transition. Many find that this change can ultimately lead to greater fulfilment, which benefits both you and your family in the long term.

Level 2 Gym Instructor vs Level 2 ETM Course: What’s the Best Choice for Your Career? https://www.origym.co.uk/blog/gym-instructor-vs-etm/ Tue, 08 Oct 2024 09:09:56 +0000 https://www.origym.co.uk/?p=37919 If you want to start working in the fitness industry, you may be wondering whether you should enrol on a Level 2 Gym Instructor course for free, since they seem like a cost-effective option.

The post Level 2 Gym Instructor vs Level 2 ETM Course: What’s the Best Choice for Your Career? appeared first on OriGym Centre of Excellence.

]]>

There are differences between the courses to qualify as a Level 2 Gym Instructor and an Exercise to Music Instructor. If you’re undecided about what direction to take, we’ll break down the differences between these courses and how you can choose the best one for you.

Contents:

To get started in the health and fitness industry, you can do this with our Level 2 Fitness Instructor. This qualifies you to work in gyms and lead group fitness classes. Download our course prospectus to find out more about how you can begin your career today!

What Will I Learn On The ETM vs Gym Instructor Course?

Our Level 2 Gym Instructor Course provides you with the skills and knowledge required to build a foundation in the fitness industry. During this course, you’ll be taught to support gym members by studying a variety of topics such as anatomy, physiology, and training.

Our Level 2 Gym Instructor Course is made up of 6 modules to help you develop this knowledge, giving you a well rounded overview to become a fitness instructor successfully.

Although the Level 2 Exercise to Music Course also provides students with similar foundational knowledge, the Level 2 Gym Instructor has extra modules including ‘Learning the Business’. This helps you understand how to market yourself as an instructor, should you decide to work freelance.

This means you’ll not only be learning the fundamentals of gym instruction but how to develop your career beyond after graduating!

Fitness Course Graduate

When studied full time, our Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification can be completed in as little as 2 weeks. Whereas our Exercise to Music Course is only studied via blended learning, with most students taking at least 6 weeks to complete the course (on average).

This means on the Level 2 Gym Instructor Course, you can get qualified and start earning quickly while also developing more knowledge and skills, compared to the Level 2 Exercise to Music Course.

The Level 2 Gym Instructor Course can also be studied entirely online, allowing you to work this course flexibly around your current job or family commitments.

Even better, the Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 2 Exercise to Music Qualifications are both the same price. This means you can get even more out of your studies without paying extra for the more valuable qualification, that will provide you with greater professional opportunities.

Check out our table below for a quick overview of how these courses compare to one another:

Level 2 Gym Instructor vs ETM Course Overview

Can You Teach Group Classes with a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification?

With a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification, one of your main roles will be to lead group workout classes. For example, here’s a job ad posted on Indeed for a gym instructor with Beckwith Health Club:

Level 2 Gym Instructor Beckwith

Most employers will list this as a necessary part of the job, regardless of whether you work full-time or freelance. This is supported by the follow job ad for a part-time Fitness Instructor position at Million Dollar Fitness:

Million Dollar Fitness Instructor

Should you decide to become self-employed and start your own business, you’ll also be fully qualified to plan and lead your own sessions.

An example of someone who did this comes from this LinkedIn profile below from Sally Williams, a self-employed fitness instructor based in Wales:

Sally Williams Fitness Instructor

In short, yes once you’ve completed a Level 2 Gym Instructor course you’ll be fully qualified to teach group fitness classes – regardless of how you decide to work.

What are the Job Prospects of an ETM vs Gym Instructor Course?

Teaching Group Classes

With a Level 2 Exercise to Music Qualification, you can teach group fitness classes as either an employee with a gym, on a freelance basis, or even with your own business. However, a Level 2 Gym Instructor will qualify you to do the exact same role.

Although many hiring managers will accept applicants with either of these qualifications, having the latter opens up many more opportunities for employment. Most employed jobs would have more roles than just teaching classes as you’d also be expected to work on the gym floor.

Group Fitness Instructing Career

Think of it this way, it’s more beneficial for a gym or fitness centre to have an employee who can not only teach Exercise to Music, but also a range of other gym classes too. The gym will have more of an advantage hiring someone who is not just limited to only teaching Exercise to Music classes but a range of fitness sessions if necessary.

For example, having a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification will not just increase your chance of being employed by a gym, but also increase employment opportunities in other areas, such as the ones highlighted below:

Fitness Instructor

By qualifying with a Level 2 Gym Instructor, you can apply for jobs like the one posted below from Indeed:

Fitness Instructor Job Whittlebury Park

As you can see, the ideal candidate for this position is someone who holds a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification. This highlights how having this entry level qualification is ideal for pursuing a career in the fitness industry as it opens many more doors to apply for jobs such as this.

In this role (as previously mentioned) you’ll be able to lead classes, as well as hosting gym inductions, working on the floor and liaising with members.

If you have qualified with only a Level 2 Exercise to Music, you would likely be passed over when applying for this position as opposed to someone with a broader qualification.

Sport & Leisure Fitness Assistant

Having a Level 2 Gym Instructor does not just limit you to working as a fitness instructor. For example, here’s a job advertisement for a Sport & Leisure Fitness Assistant at the University of Bradford:

University of Bradford Fitness Job

University of Bradford Fitness Job

As the Level 2 Gym Instructor provides a broader foundation to build on in the industry, there are more job prospects with this type of qualification such as the one above, as you aren’t as limited to just one area of fitness or one specific job.

Sales & Fitness Advisor

With a Level 2 Gym Instructor, you can even apply for roles you may not have considered, such as this one:

Sales & Fitness Advisor

Although this may not be the specific area of fitness you’d like to pursue, it highlights how much employment opportunities a Level 2 Gym Instructor can provide you with as opposed to limiting yourself to just the Level 2 Exercise to Music Qualification.

Progression Opportunities for ETM vs Gym Instructor Courses

Completing a Level 2 Fitness Instructor Qualification provides a much broader foundation which opens up more opportunities for future progression compared to only qualifying from a Level 2 Exercise to Music Course.

Check out our list of careers below to see how you can progress with these two qualifications and what ones are required for each role:

Personal Training

Personal Training Course Career

To become a personal trainer, you’ll need a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification as this is an entry requirement to enrol on the Level 3 Personal Trainer Course. Having an ETM qualification is not enough to advance to the Level 3 Personal Trainer Course – meaning you’d have to take the fitness instructor course regardless!

A personal trainer is a certified individual who works on a 1-to-1 basis with a client by creating and delivering tailored training programmes to help them achieve their fitness goals. According to Indeed, the average salary of a personal trainer in the UK is £30,931.

As personal trainers can choose their type of employment, this makes it a popular career choice for those in the fitness industry. The different types of employment include:

 • Contracted Employment
 • Freelance
 • Self-Employed

Having the opportunity to work freelance or be self employed means you can eventually choose your working hours and how many clients you train. This makes it a lucrative career as there is no limit to how many people you help!

Bootcamp Instructor

Bootcamp Instructor Career Course Table

As most bootcamp instructors are self employed and run their own businesses, you can pursue this career with either a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification or Level 2 Exercise to Music Qualification.

However, the Level 2 ETM Qualification does not include a ‘Learning the Business’ module like the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification. This is a great advantage when looking to become self employed, especially if your goal is to start a fitness boot camp business.

Bootcamp Instructors work by running individual boot camp classes on a fixed day and time while others may run set programmes that run over a number of weeks.

These are group exercise programs that combine elements of cardiovascular training, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Bootcamps are usually intense and designed to provide a full-body workout in a short period of time.

Most bootcamp instructors will work freelance or be self employed, making it a lucrative career to pursue. However, to be successful, you will need to know how to effectively market your service and bring in attendees.

Specialist Fitness Classes

Specialist Fitness Classes Career Table

Another popular choice for career progression is to develop a niche by specialising in certain fitness classes.

Although you can undertake specialist fitness classes with both of these qualifications, our Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification comes with plenty of free Continuing Professional Development Courses (CPD). These include kettlebells, bodyweight training, and medicine ball training.

By completing these additional courses, you’ll gain a plethora of knowledge which you can use to help gym goers. You can also specialise in these kinds of classes and offer them if you develop your own service.

Exercise Referral

Exercise Referral Career Table

An exercise referral specialist is somebody who is qualified to create tailored fitness programmes for people that suffer with a chronic physical condition or illness.

This could mean that a patient has one or various conditions that could be improved with physical activity. Exercise referral specialists will take referrals from GPs, the NHS and private medical practitioners respectively.

To advance onto a Level 3 Exercise Referral Course with OriGym, you need to complete a Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification first. The Level 2 Exercise to Music Qualification doesn’t count towards this.

Level 4 Fitness Trainer

Level 4 Fitness Trainer Career Table

Becoming a Level 4 Fitness Trainer is an ideal way to become an expert in the health and fitness industry. With these qualifications, you’ll be able to focus on a specific group and target these clients specifically.

Here at OriGym, we offer Level 4 qualifications such as:

Developing a niche by completing any of the qualifications above is a great way to advance your career and progress in the fitness industry.

However, to enrol on these courses, you will need to have completed a Level 3 Personal Trainer Qualification. Remember, this can only be achieved if you’ve qualified as a Level 2 Gym Instructor.

You cannot enrol with just a Level 2 Exercise to Music Qualification. This means if you wanted to progress to Level 4, you’d have to complete additional courses first.

Nutrition Coach

Nutrition Coach Career Table

Although you could pursue this career with either of the qualifications above, the Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification is ideal for expanding your service to a wider group of people. This is especially true if you work in a gym and spend a lot of time on the gym floor talking to those who regularly attend.

By doing this, you can increase the number of people you market your services to as opposed to limiting yourself to one specific role.

Nutrition coaches are exercise and nutrition professionals who are qualified to provide bespoke meal plans, advice and support to clients to make healthier choices in their food and drink consumption. The guidance is aimed at helping combine diet and exercise to help clients successfully achieve their goals.

Those who become a nutrition coach will often do this alongside their other jobs in the fitness industry, such as gym instructing, personal training, etc.

Before You Go!

Now you have a clear understanding of the differences between these courses and where they can lead you, it’s time to decide on the best one for you.

Our Level 2 Gym Instructor will give you the best way to get started in the industry and embark on a rewarding career. Download our course prospectus to read more about our courses and find the right one for you.

Learning about the roles and responsibilities associated with this position will help you develop a better understanding of how to become a group fitness instructor.

Whilst employed in this role, your main responsibility will be to lead class members through group workout sessions.

The actual content of these classes can vary depending on your chosen specialisation/what style you’ve been hired to teach, with popular variations including:

 • Circuit training
 • Indoor cycling
 • Dance fit

Hold dance classes as a group fitness instructor

Other responsibilities associated with the role of a group fitness instructor include preparing equipment for classes, liaising with management and adhering to safety policies to ensure the well-being of those in attendance.

An example of a job advertisement outlining a Group Fitness Instructor’s responsibilities can be found below:

Role of a group fitness instructor

Keep in mind, the duties you’re hired to fulfil and the amount of hours you work will vary depending on how you’re employed!

Different Employment Opportunities When Becoming a Group Fitness Instructor

Those who are interested in becoming a group fitness can do so on both a contracted and self-employed basis. Let’s take a look at both routes, to understand how the way you work affects aspects such as salary and daily responsibilities:

Contracted Group Fitness Instructor Role

Contracted group fitness instructor

When working as a group fitness instructor in a contracted position at a gym or fitness centre, you will work a set number of hours (part/full-time) determined by your employer and receive a fixed wage!

An example of this job role can be seen below:

Become contracted group instructor

When working in this capacity you will be expected to fulfil other duties assigned by your employer.

This form of employment is commonly held by those who have recently qualified and are working in the fitness industry for the first time! There are several reasons for this, for starters you won’t have to recruit any class attendees yourself, as they’ll already be members of the gym or fitness centre.

Become group fitness instructor at a gym

Additionally, there will be senior and more experienced members of staff for you to network with. This will provide you with a great opportunity to learn more about the role and develop skills used by industry professionals.

Finally, as previously mentioned you won’t have to worry about working a certain number of hours or earning a specific amount of money, as all of these things will be predetermined by your employer before signing your contract.

Self-Employed Group Fitness Instructor

Self employed group fitness instructor

Once you’ve gained enough industry experience, you can decide to become your own boss, as a self-employed group fitness instructor.

In this capacity, your earning potential is unlimited, as you’re in direct control over how frequently you work!

There are multiple different ways you can earn income when working in this capacity. For example, you may decide to apply for freelance positions at gyms/fitness centres, such as the example below:

Become freelance group fitness instructor

In this instance, you will earn an hourly wage and will only be required to teach the fitness classes you’ve been hired to cover. This allows you to work at multiple different locations, rather than being confined to one site for X amount of hours every week.

As a self-employed instructor, you may also decide to run your own fitness classes business. In doing so, you will be able to control:

 • What classes you will teach
 • The prices you set
 • The demographics of clients you will work with

Kerry’s Fitness is a great example of a self-employed group instructor who hosts her own classes. As you can see from the example below, she capitalises on the needs of different demographics by offering varied classes at different prices.

Kerry's Fitness - Group exercise instructor

You could even combine multiple different employment opportunities, working at gyms on a freelance basis alongside hosting your own classes to generate maximum income.

If you’re interested in becoming a self-employed fitness instructor who runs their own classes, check out our in-depth guide on how to set up a fitness class business. Here you’ll find valuable information ranging from organising the legalities to advertising strategies.

How Much Can a Group Fitness Instructor Earn?

Group fitness instructor salaries

If you’re interested in pursuing this position, you will naturally question ‘How much does a group fitness instructor make?’. The answer to this is dependent on a variety of factors such as:

 • Your location
 • Whether you’re contracted or freelance
 • The amount of experience you have
 • The number of hours you work

As to be expected, experienced group fitness instructors will earn more than those who have just qualified. This is because they will have more skills and knowledge to pull from and will be regarded as ‘experts’ in the industry.

But to understand the influence your location can have on your salary, check out these stats: According to Glassdoor, the average salary of a group fitness instructor in Manchester is £30,825, whilst in London it is £31,236.

Group fitness instructor UK

As you can see, group fitness instructors in London will typically earn a more lucrative salary, but this is in line with their much higher expenses – e.g. rent, utility bills, travel costs etc.

Likewise, when it comes to how you work, those who are self-employed will likely earn more than those who are contracted.

This is because they’re able to set their prices and work as often as they like. For example, take JD Aerial Fitness who charges £10 per person for a class:

how to become a group fitness instructor 2

If you followed a similar pricing structure, you could earn £100 from teaching just 10 clients for one hour! So be prepared for your earning potential to vary between each group fitness instructor position you have an interest in pursuing.

What Qualifications are Needed to Become a Group Fitness Instructor?

Become a group fitness instructor with qualifications

Becoming a group fitness instructor isn’t a complicated journey! All you need is a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification. The great news is there are no prerequisites to enrol on this course, you simply need to be over 16 years of age!

Getting this Level 2 qualification is absolutely essential as it is the minimum requirement the majority of employers will ask for when advertising group fitness instructor positions, such as this one from David Lloyd Clubs below:

Keep in mind, these qualifications are still necessary even if you’re looking to be a self employed group fitness instructor. Having these certifications is crucial to show class members you’re a credible instructor and understand exactly how you can train them effectively.

Whilst enrolled on this course, you will develop the vital knowledge and skills required to become a successful group fitness instructor. For example, you will learn how to keep your class attendees engaged with your training, providing motivation that pushes them to reach new heights.

Motivated group fitness instructor

Likewise, you’ll gain experience in tailoring group workout sessions to meet the demands of different groups. This is vital for ensuring your classes are accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of attendees.

How Do You Find The Best Course to Become a Group Fitness Instructor?

Study to become a group fitness instructor

Those looking to answer the question ‘how do I become a group fitness instructor?’, should always look for a course that meets their needs. But how do you find the right training provider?

First and foremost, you’ll want to look for a Level 2 Fitness Instructor course that has been endorsed by The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

This organisation regulates the UK’s sports and fitness industry, ensuring vocational training providers meet the same industry standards!

Likewise, you should look for a qualification that has been regulated by Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation). This is a governing body which provides vocational training courses with regulated examinations, qualifications and assessments.

Qualify as a group fitness instructor

At OriGym, we want to provide our students with the highest possible standard of training, which is why our Level 2 Gym Instructor Course is both Ofqual-regulated and accredited by CIMSPA.

Before settling on a training provider, you should ask yourself the following questions, regarding the validity of the training provider:

Do Group Fitness Instructors Need Insurance?

Insurance for group fitness instructors

As your understanding of the group fitness instructor role grows, you’ll naturally question – ‘What does a group fitness instructor do about insurance?’.

For immediate clarity, purchasing insurance is absolutely vital. Accidents can always happen, regardless of what kinds of classes you teach, insurance provides you with legal protection in the event that a claim is made against you.

When purchasing this be sure to opt for a reputable provider that offers both public liability and indemnity coverage – such as Insure4sport:

How Do I Become a Group Fitness Instructor Teaching Branded Classes?

Les Mills group fitness instructor

With popular brands like Les Mills, Zumba and Spin dominating the fitness industry, it’s easy to see why so many people want to become group fitness instructors with these companies.

If you fall into this category you’re going to need more than just a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification. You will be required to pay for specific training that has been created and approved by the brand itself.

This is because these types of classes and choreography will be trademarked by the brand, meaning you won’t be able to lead these sessions without that specific qualification.

For example, the screenshot below shows how Les Mills requires applicants to pay £425 for a registration process alone!

Les mills group fitness instructor

Additional fees may follow, for example, the price advertised above is just for one Les Mills qualification. If you wanted to teach other classes for the name brand you’d have to pay the fee again and earn an entirely new qualification.

E.g. if you paid £425 for BODYATTACK training but also wish to teach BODYPUMP, then you’ll need to pay another £425 to do so.

Another factor to consider if you want to teach branded classes is where you’ll work. For example, as a Les Mills instructor, you will only be able to teach at locations that have paid for the rights to host Les Mills classes!

For example, you couldn’t go into a regular indoor cycling class and begin teaching Les Mills’ branded RPM choreography.

Hold spin classes as a group fitness instructor

We recommend conducting thorough research into the brand’s popularity within your local area prior to undergoing training. This will determine whether the branded qualification is a worthy investment for your career.

In some instances, it will make you a more valuable employee and will allow you to pursue job roles that were previously inaccessible to you!

Become a Group Fitness Instructor with a Specialism

Kettlebell group fitness instructor

One of the most rewarding things about being a group fitness instructor is that the role allows you to develop a specialism, teaching a key area of fitness that interests you.

The job advertisement below posted by The Oakwood Club is a prime example of how employers want instructors who are adaptable and can teach multiple different classes:

Group fitness instructor specialisms

To become a group fitness instructor with a specialism, you may complete further training. Using the job advertisement mentioned above as an example, we can say that candidates who hold a Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Yoga are more likely to be hired than someone who has not undergone training.

That’s not to say that every ‘speciality’ requires you to earn additional qualifications. Some instructors may gain industry experience in specific areas and develop an interest whilst working – e.g. leading indoor cycling classes.

Opportunities for Progression as a Group Fitness Instructor

In short, becoming a sports nutritionist will set you apart from other competitors, as you will be able to provide services they don’t offer. If this sounds appealing to you, then you will first need to complete a nutritionist course.

In doing so, you will receive the highest possible standards of training in the industry, as our courses are regulated and approved by Ofqual.

Run Your Own Bootcamp

You could also consider starting a fitness bootcamp as a way of progressing your existing career.

Bootcamps provide full-body workouts, not just physically but also mentally. These are intense group sessions that combine a range of training styles such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and military-style drills.

You could even learn how to integrate specific pieces of workout equipment into these sessions. This also allows you to continue expanding your knowledge and skills with courses such as a Kettlebell Course or Medicine Ball CPD to keep things engaging for those in attendance.

Similar to the point above, running your own bootcamps means you will have control over the prices of your sessions and how many people you train, providing you with more income.

Step 1 – Get Qualified To Become An Online Fitness Coach

how to become an online fitness coach

If you’re wondering how to become an online fitness coach in the UK, the first step is to get qualified. You will need to complete the following two qualifications:

You can either take these courses separately or combined through OriGym’s cost-effective Personal Training Diploma, qualifying in as little as 4 weeks! This will lay the foundation of your career as a fitness instructor and means you can eventually become a personal trainer.

The good news is, you don’t need any specific or additional qualifications to coach clients online! However, if you’re looking to specialise in a particular area of fitness, you should take relevant additional training, such as:

Step 2 – Gain Practical Experience To Become A Fitness Coach Online

how to become an online fitness coach 3

Even if you’re specifically wanting to know how to become an ‘online’ fitness coach, it will benefit your career to initially gain in-person practical experience.

In doing so, you can develop transferable skills for your online coaching career.

The best way to do this is by working in a gym or fitness centre as a personal trainer, and gaining experience training clients on a one-to-one basis.

Working in this capacity will also help you build up a pool of loyal clients who will then follow you when you move your services online.

how to become an online fitness coach 4

These individuals will be more likely to invest in your new business, as they will be aware that your training methods get the results they desire.

Building rapport with in-person clients is therefore so important. Should they follow you to your online services, you can gain immediate financial stability, which is often a worry for any new business venture.

Step 3 – Choose Your Specialism As An Online Fitness Coach

how to become an online health and fitness coach 7

When exploring how to become an online health and fitness coach, you will need to decide what area you wish to specialise in.

When making this decision, consider these two questions:

 • What area of fitness and training do I personally excel in?
 • Who do I want my clients (or ‘target audience’) to be?

For example, you could decide that you excel in creating weight loss programmes, and therefore wish to target clients looking to lose weight.

By targeting those who are looking specifically for an online fitness coach who specialises in weight loss, you’re immediately more appealing to clients who want specific results or specialised programmes, since you offer the exact service they are looking for.

In other words, you will be regarded as an expert in that particular type of training, helping you stand out from other coaches who offer more general and holistic services.

Deciding your niche will also help you determine what qualifications are needed to pursue this specific career.

Step 4 – Decide How You Will Deliver Your Online Fitness Coaching

When learning how to become an online fitness coach in the UK, there are three main ways that you can operate:

#1- Sell Self-Guided Online Fitness Plans

how to become an online fitness coach 8

A self-guided plan is when clients independently work through a fitness programme that you give them. For example, you could create general plans for goals such as ‘weight loss’ or ‘gaining muscle’.

Alternatively, if you already have a Level 3 personal trainer qualification, you would be qualified to create tailored virtual programmes for individuals with more specific needs and goals.

In each case, the client would conduct the workouts themselves in their own home or at the gym in their own time.

You could also add further value to your services by offering things such as weekly/monthly video check-ins, or communicating with clients via Whatsapp to support them alongside their plan.

This is a great option if you want to have lots of different clients enrolled on the same programme. You can therefore maximise your earnings since you can take on more clients with the same amount of time and effort.

We have a whole article on selling fitness programmes online for more information about how to get started with this area of online coaching.

#2- Coach Clients 1-to-1 Online in Real-Time

how to become an online health and fitness coach 6

Instead of creating a plan that clients complete in their own time, this option involves coaching clients live on a 1-to-1 basis via video chat. This essentially means giving them everything you would get from an in-person session, just virtually!

This can be done effectively through video calls using your laptop and microphone and can be held on platforms such as Zoom.

#3- Record Workout Videos To Sell To Clients

how to become an online fitness coach 9

This is essentially when you pre-record videos that you can then sell to multiple clients.

This means that instead of working with each of your clients individually on separate video calls, you can make one video and send that same video to an unlimited number of different clients!

In other words, you can earn more money from more clients by working the same amount of time!

Should you decide to pursue this career, you will therefore need to invest in some filming equipment, such as a high-quality camera and microphone.

Step 5 – Get The Right Legal Coverage For Your Fitness Coaching Business

If you are looking into how to become an online health and fitness coach, there are a two key legalities you should put in place:

#1- Online Fitness Coach Insurance

how to become an online health and fitness coach 2

When considering how to become an online fitness coach, the main type of insurance you will need is personal liability insurance.

This kind of insurance can provide protection if a client makes a claim against you for an injury or damage to property. A lack of insurance can lead to severe legal fines and in severe cases prison sentences.

Within the last few years, most insurance providers have extended their policies to cover online sessions and classes. When choosing a provider you will need to read their policies in great detail to ensure you’re receiving accurate coverage.

You will also need equipment insurance to cover things like your laptop, camera and microphone.

#2- Register Your Online Fitness Coach Business

how to become an online fitness coach 4

If you’re wanting to become an online health and fitness fitness coach, you’ll need to register your business with the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for tax purposes.

This means letting the government know your business exists and is paying relevant tax. However, you’ll only need to inform the HMRC and file a tax return if you earn more than £1000 in a year.

You can register through the UK government website as a sole trader or limited company.

The best option is to register as a sole trader. This means that you can keep all your business profits after paying tax, but are responsible for your own finances.

It is therefore a good idea to hire an accountant to help you with the financial side of your business and to ensure that you calculate your taxes correctly.

Step 6 – Decide Your Rates For Your Online Fitness Coaching Business

how to become an online health and fitness coach

The next step in how to become an online health and fitness coach is to decide on how much you want to charge for your services.

You should consider your outgoing expenses when deciding your prices and ensure that they cover costs such as:

 • Buying and maintaining equipment such as a laptop, camera, microphone etc.
 • Paying for an accountant
 • Paying for software such as a website builder

It is also a good idea to conduct some market research to see how much your competitors are charging. This will allow you to price yourself appropriately, finding a balance between your prices being competitive and making a profit.

To do this, you should try to:

 • Offer sessions for slightly less than your competitors
 • Provide customers with more than what competitors are offering

You could offer online sessions on a pay-as-you-go basis. But the best way to price your online fitness business is using packages.

Step 7 – Market Yourself As An Online Fitness Coach

how to become an online health and fitness coach 4

The next step in how to become an online fitness coach is to market your business to attract your first clients!

Here are some techniques that are particularly beneficial for becoming an online fitness coach:

#1- Develop a Social Media Strategy For Your Online Fitness Coach Business

how to become an online fitness coach 5

Social media is one of the best ways to promote your business, build brand awareness and interact with your clients.

For example, you could start a fitness instagram to build your brand this way and interact with followers directly, leading to more interest in your service.

You could also use social media advertising to target a specific demographic- which we will explain more below when we discuss paid advertising.

#2- Use Family and Friend Referrals To Promote Your Online Fitness Coach Business

how to become an online health and fitness coach 8

Another online business idea is to use a referral scheme. This is when you give current clients an incentive to refer their family and friends to your business.

People are more likely to use a service when it’s recommended by someone they know and trust, making it one of the best ways to grow your online fitness coaching business!

Examples of popular incentives include:

 • Discounted classes
 • Free sessions
 • Gift cards
 • Cash incentives

This marketing tool benefits everyone – your clients will receive a benefit, and you will gain a new client!

#3- Create A Landing Page And Website For Your Online Fitness Coaching Business

how to become an online health and fitness coach 3

When you’re thinking about how to become an online fitness coach, it’s important to have a professional landing page and/or website to attract clients and promote your business.

A personal training landing page is a stand-alone page customers land on when they click through from something like social media, an email or an ad.

These pages are less about exploration, and more focused on guiding customers to complete a specific action, turning visitors into leads or sales.

For example, a landing page could feature an enquiry box where potential clients enter their details for you to contact them.

You will also need a high-quality and professional website that is easy to use and navigate. This gives your business credibility and makes users trust you, making them more likely to enquire and become paying clients!

A strong website is particularly important if you are wanting to create a library of videos that you then sell to clients, as this is where they will access them.

#4- Utilise Paid Advertising As An Online Fitness Coach

how to become an online fitness coach 7

One of the best ways to market your online fitness coaching business is by using paid advertising.

This method is great for businesses who are just starting out because:

 • They are cost-effective – you only pay if someone actually clicks on your ad.
 • You can target a specific audience, i.e. people who are already searching for online fitness coaching.
 • You can reach a large number of people at the same time
 • They are quick and easy to set up

The two main platforms to use paid advertising are Google and across social media. This allows you to reach a greater audience and eventually be a successful online personal trainer.

#5 – Use Email Marketing To Promote Your Online Fitness Coaching Business

how to become an online fitness coach 6

Email marketing involves capturing people’s contact details on your website or through social media, and sending targeted marketing emails to those individuals.

These emails are a great way for you to advertise your services, increase general brand awareness and promote any offers you are currently running.
