However, this figure is based on the salaries of jobs advertised on Glassdoor and does not consider self-employed personal trainers, who typically earn more than those in employment. Because of this, it isn’t the most accurate representation of what personal trainers actually earn.

It also doesn’t account for the following factors that can influence salary:

Experience – As with all jobs, newly qualified personal trainers usually earn less than those who have been working in the industry for several years and have plenty of personal training work experience. The job ads are more likely to represent starting salaries rather than what a PT earns after a promotion or a few years experience within their role.

Qualifications – As well as making you more employable and putting you in a position to apply for better paying jobs, additional qualifications can also boost your income as a self-employed or freelance PT. How? Gaining additional qualifications, such as an advanced qualification in nutrition, allows you to market yourself as a specialist, enabling you to charge a premium for your expert services.

Overall, jobs like this are great because they offer a stable income. They’re also the perfect option for those who don’t have many (if any) clients when they’re first starting out. If you’re newly qualified or looking to make a career change to personal training, an employed position will allow you to earn a healthy personal trainer wage while you gain industry experience.

#2  – How Does Working as a Freelance Personal Trainer Affect Salary?

In this type of role, you’ll be based at a gym or studio but not as an employee. Instead, you’ll work for yourself, and pay rent to the gym or studio owner in exchange for being able to train your clients in their venue.

Pros of Working as a Freelance Personal Trainer

  • More Flexible Role – As a freelance PT, you’ll be free to set your own prices, train your own clients, and work as many hours as you like. You can also work at multiple gyms, allowing you to expand your client base.
  • Higher Earning Potential – Not being contracted to a gym means you’ll have more control over your personal trainer salary. You won’t have set hours so can train for as long and have as many clients as time allows.

However, there are also cons to working as a freelance personal trainer.

  • Often Additional Responsibilities and Considerations – As a freelance personal trainer, you will have additional responsibilities to consider. You will need to market your service yourself, especially if the role involves building your own client base. You will also have to develop your own brand and may need personal trainer insurance if it’s not provided.
  • Rent Fees – As a freelancer, you’ll pay rent in exchange for being able to train your clients at the venue. #3 – What is a Typical Self-Employed Personal Trainer Salary?

People often view self-employed and freelance personal training as entirely different entities.

They see ‘freelance personal trainers’ as those working in a gym on the typical rent model, and ‘self-employed personal trainers’ as those with independent businesses – for example those who go one to become an online personal trainer.

The truth is, a freelance personal trainer is self-employed. For this reason, the benefits of the freelance model referenced above apply to ‘self-employed PTs’ – including the higher salary!

Once again, the earning potential for this kind of role is completely uncapped. As an online PT, for example, you’re free to take on as many clients as you can handle and charge as much as you like (within reason of course!).

The same goes for other independent PTs, such as those who work as a mobile personal trainer or run their own bootcamp business.

That said, these are only averages and there is no guarantee that every trainer in London will earn more than PTs in Liverpool (for example).

Equally, there are plenty of personal trainers working in rural areas that earn just as much as those in the city using strategies such as targeting affluent clients or becoming a master personal trainer.

Before we outline the various personal training levels in the UK, let’s first address why they are so important.

In England, all personal trainer qualification levels are set by Ofqual.

Ofqual is the Government body responsible for setting the frameworks for vocational courses — including personal training. They are also tasked with ensuring that all awarding bodies adhere to those frameworks, providing consistency across the industry.

If a course is Ofqual-regulated, it will be labelled according to its level, such as ‘Level 3’ or ‘Level 4’.

A course which is labelled by a ‘level’ therefore acts like a ‘stamp of approval’ that your course meets the highest standards of training in the industry. This means that all Ofqual-regulated courses will provide you with the same level of training, ensuring consistency across the industry.

Some ways you can demonstrate open body language are:

  • Not crossing your arms

Ok, you probably should buy an exercise mat but that’s just about it!

We’d say that the best thing about this channel is her apartment-friendly workouts, such as this 10-minute Apartment Friendly HIIT routine.

Her apartment friendly workouts are purposely low impact and involve no jumping so that you can exercise at home without annoying your neighbours (or feeling like you’re going to fall through somebody’s ceiling!).

As an added bonus, the aesthetic of her channel is lovely to look at. It’s well thought out, with all of her content organised into easy to navigate sections.

#17 NateBowerFitness

Want to switch up your regular exercise routine? Boxing is a brilliant way to add some variety to your workout. It’s fun, and it’s really hard work – what’s not to love?

Nate Bower is a boxing instructor, certified personal trainer, and a competitive athlete who shares a variety of different boxing workouts.

Whether you’re a complete beginner looking to get your technique down or a seasoned boxer looking for a new way to train, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at NateBowerFitness.

This fitness YouTube channel is really well integrated with their website, however, if you want to see a full-length workout or try out a full nutrition plan, then you’ll have to pay a little extra.

We’ve gotta give it to them, the content that you can access for free is really good but we can see why people would be reluctant to pay for the added extras when you can get them for free elsewhere.

#20 POPSUGAR Fitness

Regardless of your exercise goals, whether you’re a runner looking for ideas for a recovery session, or you’re really into strength-training, we can pretty much guarantee that POPSUGAR will have exactly what you’re looking for.

These are some of the best free YouTube fitness videos we’ve come across, especially if you’re a fan of bodyweight exercises or workouts that require minimal equipment so that you can exercise at home.

They put a new video up every week so it’s guaranteed that you’ll never get tired of doing the same thing over and over again.

If you do choose to follow the programme exactly, you’ll do three 30 minute bursts of exercise each week, this covers walking, running, and resting. As the weeks go on, the programme builds up so that you do more and more exercise and the amount of rest time decreases.

The app also includes plenty of support and motivation to get you through, with audio updates for instructions and words of encouragement, as well as a timer to show you how far into your workout you are.

As well as having an 8 week programme similar to that of Couch to 5k, this app has a unique story line based on running from zombies and collecting survival supplies.

All you have to do is put your headphones on and then the app will give you audio instructions on when to walk, jog, run, and do your stretches.

But honestly, the instructions aren’t entirely necessary because once you hear the zombies getting closer to you instinct kicks in and you’ll be beating your PB pace without even realising it.

For us, this one had to make our list purely because it’s so creative and completely different to any of the others that we tried out.

A lot of people find cardio very monotonous, especially if you’re restricted to boring routes or running in the gym. If this is you, then Zombies, run! is a game changer.

It’s definitely one of the best running apps for beginners for treadmill workouts as we know from experience that these can get really repetitive.

Not only is this a good programme to get you started, it’s really entertaining, too. Plus, in the event that a zombie apocalypse does actually happen you’ll be well prepared.

If you run alone or on potentially dangerous routes, having access to Beacon can provide reassurance that if anything were to happen, your closest friends or family would be able to find you.
